Why do people flock to see preserved human corpses—and how do they actually feel about it?

Plastination exhibits like Body Worlds attract millions of visitors worldwide, promising insight into the human body in a way that textbooks and screens can't deliver. But behind the fascination lies a more complex emotional response. Curiosity brings people in— but what they leave with isn't always what they expected.

What the Data Tells Us

A 2006 study by Leiberich et al. surveyed Body Worlds attendees and revealed a mix of learning, awe, and discomfort:

86.4% felt the exhibit helped them understand their own anatomy

74.5% said they came out of curiosity

49.8% reported feeling disturbed by what they saw

40.6% reflected on their own mortality

42.6% said the exhibit motivated them to pursue a healthier lifestyle

These numbers show a tension: people are drawn in by the taboo, but not everyone leaves feeling comfortable with what they've seen.

"Most exhibition-goers are drawn to reality... not just because real bodies can teach us... but because observing them in this manner brings us closer to the forbidden." —King, Whitaker, & Jones (2013)

A more recent study in Tel Aviv (2012) adds depth to the emotional response. Conducting a before-and-after survey with 398 participants, researchers measured changes in posttraumatic symptoms, depressive symptoms, death anxiety, and death-related fears.

Posttraumatic symptoms decreased (F = 7.29; P = .008; Cohen d = 0.42)

Depressive symptoms significantly decreased (F = 15.24; P < .001; Cohen d = 0.48)

Death anxiety dropped (F = 6.62; P = .011; Cohen d = 0.31)

Fear of terminal illness, terror attack, and motor vehicle accidents also reduced significantly

This suggests that for some, experiencing the exhibit may reduce death anxiety and create a kind of emotional release. Perhaps encountering death directly in a controlled, non-traumatic setting enables visitors to come to terms with their own mortality.

Curiosity vs. Discomfort

People are naturally curious about death and the body—it’s something we all share, but rarely confront so directly. These exhibits open the door to that confrontation in a controlled, almost clinical way.

But discomfort lingers. Many visitors describe a strange disconnect: the bodies don’t feel quite human, but aren’t fake. They occupy an uncanny space between science and spectacle.

Some describe awe. Others, guilt. A few feel both at once.

Mortality Mirrors

One of these exhibits' most powerful (and unsettling) effects is how it reflects us back to ourselves. Seeing a plastinated body—maybe posed like it’s running, dancing, or holding its own organs—forces visitors to consider: What happens to me when I die? Would I want this?

That moment of mortality awareness is part of what makes plastination so controversial. It’s not just about learning anatomy—it’s about how we emotionally process being human.

Public Education or Emotional Voyeurism?

There’s real value in making science accessible, visual, and tangible. But it’s worth asking whether the emotional weight of these exhibits gets enough attention. Are visitors prepared to reflect on death, or are they just looking for something cool to post?
