nope still not over it wdym langdon takes care of mel?? the man oblivious to his wife's needs. doesn't really think about her day to day life. gets a dog without consulting the woman running their household and raising their kids. brings up his own stressful career when somebody mentions his wife's struggles. tries to put a grilled salmon dinner shaped bandaid on his shortcomings. a birkin (?!) shaped bandage on his flaws as a husband. isn't even willing to take care of a new puppy he got his kids since they said they'll do it. and we're supposed to believe HE'S the adult taking care of mel king ??
like he picks her out from the herd of newbies (she's the oldest so the attendings assume she's fine on her own) but he takes her under his wing and takes care of her. langdon looks out for her. he works cases that dont require two residents so he can keep an eye on her. he constantly praises her. asks her if she's okay. tells her to take her time. says she's his least problematic trainee knowing she needs to hear it. reaffirms her faith in herself by tying her insecurities to his own (been there, we all been there. you and me both). hears her out and immediately soothes her aching heart. validates her emotions. explicitly shows off her skills and praises her in front of patients after she was on the floor doubting her place here. says she's the person he'd call in that situation. makes her feel needed.
langdon catches her in moments of crisis and rushes to her side. he guides her. teaches her. lets her latch onto him. calls her his favourite with so many words because he knows she's excited to be his favourite. his girl.

insane chemistry aside, i think mel and langdon would make an incredible couple because it would be nice to see the awkward autistic girl paired up with the man literally nicknamed "ER ken."
like... to most of the others, she's odd and quirky and a lot of people don't understand her or get her humor... except for the 6 foot something dark-haired, blue eyed senior doctor who looks at her like the sun shines out of her ass and goes out of his way to check in on her 4 times in 12 hours and compliments her easily.
maybe years of seeing the awkward, weird girl be the sidekick to supermodel protagonists has irrevocably rewired my brain, but it would be nice to see the weird girl be with the hot guy for once!

omg. if you have the time. we decide to play a game of chicken together which leads to one thing or another AU
“I think Dr. Langdon is flirting with me.”
Samira turns from her charting, scanning Mel’s face before shaking her head and starting to type again.
“He’s not,” Samira says, “He’s married, Mel. He talks about his wife all the time.”
“Not to me,” Mel mutters. “I’m pretty sure he is.”
“You’re probably misreading the signals.”
“I…” Mel stutters. She has been known to do that. That’s why she wanted to bring it up to Samira. “…Guess you’re right.”
Married men don’t flirt with women who aren’t their wives. Mel knows this the same way she knows everyone waits until they’re twenty one to start drinking.
Langdon swings by their desks then, she can sense him coming. A weight hits her shoulders and it’s his hands gripping onto her, solid. Mel tilts her head up into his body, resting against his chest.
“Hey, babe, you wanna take a look at the guy in North 5 with me?”
“What happened to him?”
“Mandolin accident. Guess how many fingers he lost.”
“Most people just lose one.”
“Most people,” he agrees ruefully, “But guess how many this guy lost.”
“Three?”
“Cut the fingertips off of all five, sweetheart.”
Mel winces.
He pulls her up out of the chair. “Over under three that we can reattach?”
Samira pipes up, “Under.”
“Someone’s a pessimist. What do you think, baby?” He’s standing so close his chest is touching her back.
Mel tries to catch Samira’s eye, but she’s disinterested, focused on the computer. “Um, over? I guess.”
“That’s the spirit,” he pushes her towards the hall.
“I know where North 5 is.”
His hand stays on her back. “I know.”
“I think Dr. Langdon is flirting with me.”
Collins continues to stitch the laceration on their patient’s leg, but her eyebrows raise in a way that Mel can tell means she’s paying attention. “Why would you say that?”
“Um, he’s been calling me terms of endearment. And he touches me a lot? More than normal, I think. Oh, and he brought me breakfast this morning. It looked homemade.”
“Langdon’s pretty impulsive. He probably gave you his leftovers.”
“What about the touching?”
“Yes, he’s very tactile. Like a big puppy, really.”
“Is he tactile with you?”
“Ha! Not likely.”
Mel’s brow furrows.
“Dr. Langdon is married, anyway.”
“I know that.”
“You’re a great doctor, Mel, one of our best residents.”
“Thank you.”
“He’s just playing favorites. Robby does that too, sometimes.”
“…You don’t think there’s any reason I’m his favorite?”
“No.”
“Okay,” Mel says awkwardly.
The curtain to the room opens then, Langdon’s head popping up. He winks at her. “What do we have here?”
She shifts uncomfortably, wondering if he heard their conversation before he walked in.
“Belligerent drunk,” Collins says, “Had to knock him out so I could suture him.”
“And it seems like you’re doing a fine job. Can I steal Mel?”
Collins hands her over without a second thought. “Go ahead.”
“Great.” Langdon tugs Mel out of the room by the wrist.
“What did you need me for, Dr. Langdon?”
He shrugs, “Dunno yet. Let’s go find something interesting.”
“I think Dr. Langdon is flirting with me.”
Robby slowly closes the drawer he’d been digging in, a packet of nicotine gum halfway to his mouth. Mel had caught him in between cases. He’s a good teacher, albeit very hands off. Mel’s spent a latent chunk of her shift trying to catch up to him.
“Okay…?” Robby trails off.
Mel’s hands flex. “Do you…”
This is embarrassing.
“Do you think that he is?”
“Flirting with you?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Mel wants the ground to swallow her.
“Langdon’s been on his best behavior since coming back.”
It’s true. He’s sharper now than he was before, she thinks, more attuned to the needs of the ED. Robby has been trying to wrangle him back into his role as the heir apparent.
“I think he was smelling my hair the other day? It was hard to tell. We were talking by the lockers and he just leaned in.“
“Langdon would never be inappropriate with any of our residents. He knows better than that.”
“I’m not accusing him of anything I just—”
“Good. If he’s not bothering you then we have nothing further to discuss,” Robby houses a few pieces of gum and shoves the rest back in the drawer. “C’mon Dr. King, we’ve got patients waiting.”
Mel takes the dismissal.
She shuffles over by the board to see what needs done, but Langdon’s standing by the ambulance doors, waiting for something to come in.
“Mel! Motorcycle accident coming in five. You in?”
She can never refuse him.
“Attagirl,” Langdon grins. He slaps her ass and gestures to a trauma room, “Go get gowned up, baby.”
Mel jumps at the impact, blushing, stealing a few glances back at him as she goes to follow his directions.
“Dr. Langdon?”
He pulls himself away from her lips, “Yeah, Mel?”
“Have you been flirting with me?”
“Little bit.”
He retracts his thigh out from between her legs. There’s a wet spot where she’s been grinding on it.
“Honestly, I thought you’d chicken out before we got here.”
“I wasn’t sure,” Mel says, lips kiss-swollen. She glances at the obvious erection in his pants.
“I thought I was being pretty obvious.”
“I’m not good at social cues.”
“Ah,” Langdon says, “Alright, let me be more direct.”
He shoves her up against the wall again, kissing her intently, the press of his hard length into her thigh undeniable.

i could soooo see mel absolutely needing her hair to be as tightly back from her face as possible during a shift, but she enjoys having a touch of personal style that she feels like the ponytails and braids don’t allow
then when javadi gives her a flower claw clip for her birthday, bright pink and yellow and beautiful, mel becomes obsessed with claw clips. she starts out with one of every color for the flowers, then bow-shaped ones, and soon enough she has the full rainbow with different shapes.
on days where the lava lamp just isn’t enough, she closes her eyes and run the dull claws over her cheeks and forehead to soothe her.
after they start dating, frank will randomly order one and leave it out on the kitchen counter for her to discover and wear for her next shift. he finds out about the job-personalized ones and goes ham ordering her ones that look like prescription bottles, pills, first aid kits, and more.
when it finally seems like mel owns a million claw clips, frank builds her a shelf for her to show them off rather than throwing them into the drawer
(who knew a man with bedhead in low riding jeans holding nails and a hammer would do it for her?)

what do you mean that mel and langdon are kindred spirits who choose each other and he softens for her and she reveals hidden depths to his character and she helps him be vulnerable and realize being not okay is okay and he helps her build confidence in herself and gives her structure and routine so she attaches herself to him bc he needs to be needed and she helps him slow down and he grounds her and all of this happens within fifteen hours of knowing each other

what to do, now that i've found you?
Tumblr media
rated t | 10, 266 words
Her thoughts are as follows: If Subject A (Mel) shows signs of discomfort, Subject B (Frank) will try to help, and vice versa. Therefore, if A is in need of a replacement for an article of clothing, B will do his best to provide A with one. It's shaky logic, all things considered, but it's enough. All that's left is for Mel to put her hypothesis to the test.
Or: Mel can't stop stealing Frank's clothes. It's becoming quite the problem.

the narrative/visual cues in this scene from 1x01 are so important to how the show views mel and langdon’s dynamic and i need to talk about it lol
robby doesn’t really have any friends, nor does he want any. while he is obviously willing to mentor those junior to him at the pitt, he is also very clearly uninterested in their personal lives (with the exception of collins). he’s able to support them when it comes to difficulties on the job but it doesn’t go much further than that.
the issue there is that most of the characters are not leaving their work at work (including robby himself lmao). it is seemingly going home with them and impacting the other parts of their lives. ultimately, they all need to connect with others who understand that feeling and can help them navigate it. mel isn’t as guarded as the rest of them so she makes it pretty apparent that she’s looking for this kind of connection (speaking of, can everyone pls just be friends with her already??? jfc). langdon is more subtle about it, but he's also looking for the exact same thing.
his exchange with robby in this scene is so telling because he clearly sees robby as one of his best friends and robby can barely admit that they're friends at all (which....brutal). langdon is asking for emotional connection/reassurance in that moment and, essentially, being rejected.
and right as this rejection is occurring, mel enters the scene (both literally and figuratively lol). mel, who wants emotional connection and is very willing to give it in return. it feels like a little wink from the show letting you know that these two are going to be actual friends. it’s also a perfectly written starting point for the parallel between robby and langdon’s mentor-mentee relationship and the one that comes to exist between langdon and mel. whereas robby is not attuned enough to langdon to notice his struggles, langdon is constantly checking in with mel to make sure she’s doing okay and then offering up support when she needs it. langdon's not perfect at it and he missteps a few times when it comes to her, but it feels a lot like he is treating mel the way he wishes robby would treat him </3
you then have the added intrigue of robby watching langdon and mel interact for the first time and looking for collins immediately after. as if something about those two possibly reminded robby of himself and collins. i just find the choice to visually parallel langdon/mel and robby/collins in 1x01 to be very curious now that we know robby and collins were romantically involved. and i don’t have much more to say regarding that other than 👀👀👀
tl;dr the framing of mel and langdon’s first real interaction on the show really highlights how important they are/will be to one another.

hi college sports kingdon au thoughts
- ballerina mel and hockey player langdon
- they kinda run in the same crowd so they know of each other’s name, but all langdon really knows about her is that she’s good friends with his arch-nemesis santos, the co-captain of the women’s hockey team
- they don’t meet until shen introduces them at one of his house parties, and langdon’s shocked that this shy, petite girl with big glasses and soft hair is one of santos’ best friends
- she calls him frank (she thinks calling someone by their last name is disrespectful to their individuality) and shen expects him to correct her like he usually does (he thinks being called by your last name is a right of passage for male twenty-somethings) but instead he just kinda looks at her doe-eyed and talks in this weird gentle voice he’s never heard before
- after that, he just can’t get her out of his head. trips over his feet to say hi to her when they cross paths on campus, tries (and fails) to subtly ask santos how she is, pushes shen to throw another party, etc.
- she starts going to some of his games under the guise of supporting shen, and is enraptured by the way he glides on the ice
- he somehow always manages to catch her eye and wave excitedly until she shyly waves back
- the first time a brawl happens at one of his games he’s hesitant to jump in because he wants to come off as calm, cool, and collected, but the other team doesn’t really give him a chance to not get involved
- (and listen, mel finds violence in sports mostly unnecessary and just a way for men to stupidly show off, but she would be lying if sometimes she didn’t blush and kick her feet in bed when she remembers the way he’d come out of that fight, hair tussled and wet, a bruise forming around his jaw, and a bloody smirk that only grew as he continued to talk shit)
- langdon’s not great with words, there’s a reason he avoids english classes, but the way he describes how mel dances is akin to the most beautiful love poems. he doesn’t ballet, but god does he love watching her dance
- they’re adorably obnoxious when they finally get together, always cuddling close or holding hands tightly. she shows up to his games in full hockey fan gear (for their april fools game she shows up in shen’s jersey and laughs her ass off when langdon nearly faints from disgust), and he sits in the back of the ballet studio watching her practice with stars in his eyes
- langdon’s got a lifetime of nicknames and pet names for mel (his favorites being: mellie, my girl, and babe). mel finds herself cringing everytime she attempts to use a pet name so she just sticks with frank, which still feels special considering no one else calls him that

more deranged situations for these characters time: mel gave her first blowjob to someone who isn’t langdon (he is killing himself about this shortly) and hated the taste of cum and had to spit it out, but she’s an overachiever so of course she thinks she needs to find a way to get used to it. so who better to ask than her bestest friend frank who’s always so good at teaching her things and helping her. they don’t even need to do anything! it’s all very clinical, he just needs to jerk off into her mouth or she can lick it up! yeah he can maybe jerk off onto her food too. but maybe by the nth time she can just suck on the tip a little bit to help him out! and then maybe he can do a 2 in 1 lesson and show her how to take him down her throat! and then hold his cum on her tongue showing it to him while he lets her hump his shoe until she orgasms and only then she can swallow. ivan pavlov eat your heart out. anyway she gets addicted to it
i need to raise you one and say virgin mel <3 i can't stray from this im too dedicated to the cause so she asks frank because she trusts him to take care of her. she knows he'll teach her well :) of course it starts clinically very sterile maybe they have their first lessons in an empty patient room after a long day shift. langdon letting her touch a dick for the first time and he's more than happy to help her get used to his taste. specifically. hes claiming her that's his baby. jerking off into her mouth telling her she's a good girl when she can take it all yeah <3 yeah. holding her jaw open so he can fuck her face the whole nine. and mel's like 😃 i love learning teach me more forever please
