hello can you tell me more about not having a smartphone bc i've been considering it for AGES but have not yet made the leap. i'd love to know more about your experience and how you navigate day-to-day life without one!
Sure! My smartphone didn't start up one day, and I expected to feel panic and frustration. But all I felt was relief. This was during the first real apex in suffering during the ongoing Gaza genocide. I have never seen so many dismembered children's corpses before. It became clear that I would need a shift of perspective if I was to cultivate the endurance I needed to keep engaging with that level of suffering, or I was going to burn out and stick my head in the sand.
So I decided not to replace it. I drove to the nearest big box store and bought an $80 Nokia flip phone, got a new plan, and that was that. So I still can make and receive calls, and it can text if you can brave the keypad style typing. It's very slow and annoying. Mostly I just use my phone to call my friend @drarry and that's about it. I still scroll, I still use websites, I still keep up with the news, and I still could reduce my screen time further. But having the internet be a place in my home, at the computer, has been a huge boon for my mental health. I still check in on Gaza and donate when I can. But I am sitting down and mentally prepared for the worst atrocities humanity can muster, rather than blindsided by it while trying to get to sleep.
I read voraciously now. Every time I would otherwise be on my phone, I am reading some garbage on my kindle. We all need to shovel garbage down our throats sometimes. I recommend getting into bad pulp romance or something mindless that is nonetheless reading. Having a Kindle has been huge. I recommend getting an e-reader and having it close. Have two books going; a good book that nourishes and challenges you, and a bad book that kills time. I love both kinds of reading. Oh, and make use of https://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle to send articles and fanfic to your kindle. I missed reading fanfic in bed, so being able to send stuff from my computer to be able to read offline was big. I work from home, so I don't have the same need for having a computer on me at all times as someone regularly commuting and going out, but there was a time before cell phones, and people managed.
I got a dedicated GPS device for my car, that was important.
When I have a big important drive coming up, I make sure that the GPS has the route, review it in advance on Google Maps, and potentially even print it out just in case.
I have had to do things that I never had to do before, like stopping and asking strangers for directions and such.
Ensure you have roadside assistance saved into your phone, or a card in your wallet with their number. I had to call a friend to help me find the number for a tow service before, and it was fine, but get ahead of it and be ready for a flat tire and no cell phone.
If a restaurant requires you to have a smartphone to see their menu, politely tell the employee that you won't be giving them your business if they don't have a paper menu, and leave.
Oh, and get an .mp3 player, or load up your flip phone with music. Torrent it, download it, whatever you gotta do. No spotify on a flip phone, and they don't pay artists anyways. You may as well pirate your favs and save them to your phone and buy a tee shirt sometime.
There were lots of small things like that, little hiccups I would run into that had to be smoothed over. But at no point in the process did I miss my phone, aside from things like minor emergencies or getting lost where it would have been nice.
This may make it sound like the transition was difficult. It wasn't. It was shockingly easy. There were some logistics to figure out, but it was just a relief and a return to The Old Ways.
Mostly, I find myself able to sit in silence better. My attention span is longer. Politically, I am less enamored by the latest spectacle, and more aware of the bigger picture. I read theory and engage with more complex ideas. I can sit and listen to an album all the way through, without doing anything else. I genuinely think not having a smartphone has given me more space and focus, mentally.
If you are thinking of taking the plunge, I can't recommend it enough. It will be briefly inconvenient, and then you won't think about it at all.
