Accessible audio books! Which ones from other authors in your genre do you listen to and your fans listen to? And just what makes an audio book dyslexia-friendly?

(For anyone wondering what this ask is referring to, I currently have two audiobooks in production, one for the first Ember Academy for Young Witches book, and one for the first Royal Cleaner book. The opening chapters of the latter are now available on my Patreon, but as with all early previews that I post to Patreon, they’re a first draft. These opening chapters were very much a proof of concept and are likely to be redone later in the process.)

I mean, it’s tough to say when it comes to my genre because while I’ve been mostly writing urban fantasy over the past couple of years, I do write across sci-fi and fantasy, and while audiobooks are better for my dyslexia, I also have auditory processing issues.

So, basically, if a book isn’t likely to upset my dyslexia, I’ll probably choose to read it, rather than listen to it, and most urban fantasy books fall under that umbrella (though not all) whereas secondary world fantasy or some kinds of sci-fi (though not all) are more likely to throw in words that are made-up, or that I’m not overly familiar with, that slow down the reading process enough that I’d prefer to listen to them.

(Basically, if you show me a word that I have not memorised the pronunciation of, I will really struggle to sound it out, so when I’m reading, I tend to not even try, but the more words I’m just skipping over and mentally going “protagonist name”, “antagonist name”, “big city name”, the harder it’s going to be for me to actually keep track of the plot.)

Also, as much as I’m saying “I’m mostly writing urban fantasy lately”, the secondary world series I’ve been working on in the background is currently the top choice in the Patreon interest poll, so I should finish the first part of that and post it soon...

And I might do audio for that as I go. It’ll probably be a good proofing tool.

Anyway, as for my listening habits, I’ve been really loving the Witcher audiobooks. Like 10/10, if you want to know what good audiobook narration sounds like, there it is.

I’ve also been listening to Lindsay Buroker’s series, and they’re great. I would recommend just anything written by her.

I also loved the audiobook for Romancing the Inventor by Gail Carriger. Her stuff is actually up and down on my dyslexia, I got on fine reading the novellas (I just got the audio as well because I love them and wanted to reread/listen to them back in the before times when I was at the office), and I also did okay with the Parasol Protectorate series, but I bounced right off the YA - as in, I read the first book, but did the thing where I substituted too many words and then couldn’t tell you anything about what I’d read - so maybe I need to switch to audio for that.

I’ve also really liked the audiobooks for The Stars Are Legion by Kameron Hurley, Solve for i by A.E. Dooland, and The Company of Death by Elisa Hansen.

I also use audiobooks for non-fiction listening, and I really liked Neurotribes by Steve Silberman, Disney War by James B. Stewart, Take Off Your Pants! by Libbie Hawker (get your mind out of the gutter, it’s a writing advice book), SPQR by Mary Beard and The Silk Roads by Peter Frankopan (the last two are research for a secondary world series that I’m working on with @ivanaskye ). And I’ve got The End of Policing by Alex S. Vitale queued up next (I’m actually behind on my listening, as it was mostly something I did when commuting, shopping or in the office - I also have over 100 hours of podcasts to catch up on as well).

And I’m not sure about what my fans listen to. That’s probably something I should ask at some point...

And for the last question, audiobooks are dyslexia friendly because dyslexia impairs my ability to read written words and audiobooks mean that I don’t have to do that.

not in order of appearance, just some things I wanted to comment on

so this (and Cat finding James’s desk bed in the previous chapter) is a Supergirl Radio recurring joke, because that podcast’s hosts noticed James didn’t have a home and assumed he slept under his desk at Catco

I wrote the first part of this scene back in June, mostly because I decided I was going to include the inhibitors in the story somehow and wanted to have a version of the 5x10 scene to go along with it since it’s such a great scene for Kara and Brainy and one of my personal favorites. I later added a little bit to it, including the “you’re a true hero” line, which I used as a reference to this iconic scene from the season 2 premiere of the Legion of Super-Heroes animated series. And I didn’t want to copy that scene entirely, so I decided to twist it a little bit and have Fabala be responsible for the inhibitors in this universe. Because she would’ve gotten them too (along with Indigo, since I headcanoned that all Coluans working as supercomputers on Krypton got inhibitors and that’s why Kelex said they were blue) and she’s the worst.

to be honest I really just wanted to use the word “wrath” here, because it sounds like Jesse’s last name.

and same to me wanting to use a particular word here, specifically “defiance”, because it’s another show Jesse was in, where he played an alien with terrible parents from a species that starts with the letter C and ends with N, who rebelled against them and was more sympathetic to/wanted to understand humans, and had a brunette love interest whose actress’s name is Nicole with the last initial M. He also had white hair in that show, although his skin was painted white instead of blue (but he had blue streaks in his hair in season 1)

first of all, “that one about dying pelicans” references a thing from early season 2 where Kara was assigned to report about pelican deaths at a trash dump, which was again a Supergirl Radio joke (albeit a short-lived one).

Second, “intern at the White House” refers to Nia, because I wanted Cat to reference her somehow and I figured that this would be the best place to do it, establishing that Cat knows her and that she looks up to Kara already.

so this line was originally “turned down Rob Lowe”, but I just changed it because, even though Chad Lowe isn’t as famous, he did play the cult leader guy in season 3 and directed a couple episodes, and he was also in (I believe) Young Justice and Superman the Animated Series (the latter even as a member of the Legion). So I thought it would be a fun Celebrity Paradox kind of deal.

Silver Kryptonite was actually Brainiac’s fault in the show Smallville, so I thought it would be even more fitting for Fabala to use it, and just reference that she got it from her ancestor (even though I don’t think it was actual Kryptonite, it just looked like it was). Also originally Clark saw Zod, but I just kind of thought Brainiac fit better as his worst enemy, so I substituted that in.

Kara as a “dream warrior” comes from the Adventures of Supergirl comics by Sterling Gates, set in the universe of the show during season 1! I recommend them if you haven’t read them yet, they’re super great and it’s only 12 or 13 issues.

this is kind of a reference to this powerpoint by @vulcan-highblood, because I wanted to have a good reason for the duel and I couldn’t just repeat the whole Dakkam Ur thing. So I decided to keep it based in history, but in a different way.

“Earthbound version of the Coluan collective” was pretty much what I thought Non and Indigo were creating with Myriad in season 1, although I did realize that a lot later than season 1. Also I had to put in an homage to the lovely “Supergirl is stronger than any Legionnaire. I have faith in her” line from 3x18.

so real talk, this was the hardest part for me to make up my mind about, because the Coluans don’t really have one weakness the way Kryptonians have Kryptonite or Daxamites have lead. So I just decided to combine Winn’s virus that he used against Indigo in season 1 with Medusa from earlier in the season. It might be a little bit overkill, but it worked. Also, as Brainy notes, Fabala was super lying about the AI plague in the future, so it made sense in an ironic kind of way to use that against her.

“he wasn’t really the first” references both Kenny and James, whose relationships with Kara were sadly short-lived, but deserved to be mentioned anyway.

I don’t really have anything to say about this part because I imagine it to be like the scene with Mon-El and the portal in the actual season 2 finale, but let me tell you, I was so hyped about this ending when it happened. When I watched the Flash a few months later, I even compared the time portals in the episode with Abra Kadabra, to confirm Mon-El was going to the future, because I might not have liked Mon-El, but I did really want him to be in the future with the Legion, so some of the Legionnaires could be in season 3. Especially Brainy, because @peskyshortcake and I had lots of ideas for him, specifically involving him being rivals-to-friends-with-benefits with Winn. (then again I also thought that Superman would appear in season 3 and be familiar with the Legion, like they would be his friends and would’ve trained him in the future to become Superman like in the LOSH animated series. But I was wrong because Mon-El probably definitely created an alternate timeline when he went into the future.)

Also re: the ending, I am sorry that it was so close to canon, with Kara being sad because she had to send Brainy away, since I’ve read a lot of criticisms about season 2 (thanks, @iamdeltas and your “supershitshow” tag). I know my take isn’t perfect, and I was only correcting one major problem in the season, but I’m sure there are other fics that fix different problems, and I’d like to read more of those too!
