The Best Camera Lens Filters for Photographers who Hate Boring Photos (And Editing)
Camera lens technology is getting so good, that it’s not hard to find glass that’s near perfect. The problem is, those perfect lenses feel a bit clinical, a bit too sterile. And it’s not technical perfection that creates a good photograph, but rather the emotion that the image evokes. Ironically, photography is at a technical peak and yet some photographers are “hacking” lenses with a pair of…

Mojo Zoo's Photo Class: Filters
Tumblr media
Back in the day, the goal of any photographer was to get as much of the image created through the lens as they can, and the rest to be done in the darkroom. It was easier to get the right photo on film than it was to craft it in a dark room. Ansel Adams was a MASTER of the darkroom. I'm totally jealous of his skills with images.
Now we have a plethora of choices, both in camera for both film and digital cameras.
Let's start with optical filters, usually made of glass that is tinted or creates an effect.
Cokin and Tiffen are the most popular brands of optical filters.
Tumblr media
If you are shooting on something other a smartphone, you should at least have one filter on your lens just to protect the lens from scratches and impacts. A plain glass filter or a polarizer should be standard kit for your system.
Tumblr media
But my fav filter is "Galaxy Diffuser" by Cokin. It was the first I bought back in the 80s because is was just sooooo gay!

It creates radiant rainbows expanding out from a light source. Here is another example from that filter...
Tumblr media
It can create some amazing effects, especially with light sources that are moving. Brilliant.
There are literally thousands of optical filters available. You might want another job.
But let's talk about digital filters. They are available from almost all social media and art apps. You can modify, tints, tones, saturation - everything. Back in the day, we had to craft negatives in developer chemicals and then we were faced with the printing the photo - burning and dodging were a thing. But software can do that for you and software can also do some things we really didn't think about 50 years ago.

PixLens: Reality into 8-bit 🧊📷 https://blog.adafruit.com/2025/04/25/pixlens-reality-into-8-bit/
PixLens is a little acrylic cube designed by materials engineer Hakusi Katei (Monoli) that makes 16 × 16-ish mosaic—no batteries, no-screens, or post-processing required pictures. A pair of crossed cylindrical micro-facets on the front and bkack split light into rows and columns; each facet behaves like a tiny diverging lens, so every square of the area forms a chunky “pixel”.
It's been described as a “prism that Minecrafts scenery without electricity” … retina resolution? heck no, this is deliberate degradation. It's a cute art-tool, about 34 × 34 × 16 mm and 18 × 18 effective pixels, pop in a camera bag and drops straight in front of any lens—phone, DSLR, webcam, or even your eye… Each version-1.3 piece is CNC-cut, hand-polished, engraved with the PixLens logo, and released in pre-order batches of 500-1000 units.

I think 90% of my gripes with how modern anime looks comes down to flat color design/palettes.
Non-cohesive, washed-out color palettes can destroy lineart quality. I see this all the time when comparing an anime's lineart/layout to its colored/post-processed final product and it's heartbreaking. Compare this pre-color vs. final frame from Dungeon Meshi's OP.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So much sharpness and detail and weight gets washed out and flattened by 'meh' color design. I LOVE the flow and thickness and shadows in the fabrics on the left. The white against pastel really brings it out. Check out all the detail in their hair, the highlights in Rin's, the different hues to denote hair color, the blue tint in the clothes' shadows, and how all of that just gets... lost. It works, but it's not particularly good and does a disservice to the line-artist.
I'm using Dungeon Meshi as an example not because it's bad, I'm just especially disappointed because this is Studio Trigger we're talking about. The character animation is fantastic, but the color design is usually much more exciting. We're not seeing Trigger at their full potential, so I'm focusing on them.
Here's a very quick and messy color correct. Not meant to be taken seriously, just to provide comparison to see why colors can feel "washed out." Top is edit, bottom is original.
You can really see how desaturated and "white fluorescent lighting" the original color palettes are.
[Remember: the easiest way to make your colors more lively is to choose a warm or cool tint. From there, you can play around with bringing out complementary colors for a cohesive palette (I warmed Marcille's skintone and hair but made sure to bring out her deep blue clothes). Avoid using too many blend mode layers; hand-picking colors will really help you build your innate color sense and find a color style. Try using saturated colors in unexpected places! If you're coloring a night scene, try using deep blues or greens or magentas. You see these deep colors used all the time in older anime because they couldn't rely on a lightness scale to make colors darker, they had to use darker paints with specific hues. Don't overthink it, simpler is better!]

i must say i’m baffled by the fact that people say you look like sam reich i simply do not see it
I honestly think that more people than we realize have a degree of face blindness, and rely on details like beards, hair, glasses, etc. when looking for similarities between people.
It also applies to things like fashion and why folks call my modern outfits "Victorian" when I am literally just wearing a brown sportscoat over brown jeans. Because the norm for men these days is t-shirt and shorts.
Visual shorthands have become more and more compressed and more and more leaned upon and I hate it. It feels lazy and lacking in curiosity beyond the current zeitgeist (faceblind issues aside).

Tiffen's Fusion Filters Are The Ultimate All-in-One Solution For Your Needs
Filters are some excellent ways to improve your photographs in-camera. Some filters help to improve the colors, while others add interesting effects to make your work stand out. One of the companies whose filters we liked reviewing was Tiffen Company. Not only do their filters give images distinct appeal, but also they are cost-effective. As part of their initiative to make filters more…

The thing about Hetalia is just like I think it’s a bad thing to put in kids brains. Like the base concept of having all these countries personified as likable cute anime boys who play around with one another and tell jokes and whatnot is just like…. A really evil way to conceptualize this stuff. Idk if it’s just because I’m thinking about my own middle school anime fandom experience but it has to still mostly appeal to kids right. Call me that one friend who’s too woke but I don’t like it. Like that atrocities sanctioned by the governments of these countries are interpreted as quirky character flaws or something. Nothing matters it’s all jokes but it’s also a vehicle for the really obvious biases of the creators. That’s how you get Hetalia Korea being tsundere for Japan

also why in posts i see headcanoning the ages of characters is anya like a fresh faced baby at like 22-23 or something,,,, make that woman in her late twenties rn. she has managed to not get into medical school eight separate times thats eight times she's missed an enrollment cutoff date which is at least four years of trying to get it, and the fact that you need a bachelors as well usually to get into med school so at minIMUM she has to be twenty six-seven. make her the frustrated mid twenties bitch that she deserves to be goddammit.
