ya'll getting off of antidepressants is scary as hell. like, i've been on lexapro since I was 22. that's nearly ten years. since weaning off of it (down to 5mg from 20mg a day), i've been more fatigued, losing interest in things like drawing and games, and just feeling more depressed in general. every bone in my body is like 'well shit, I should probably take it again' or 'oh my god, is this what my actual self is like'
and its kinda like, I can imagine for some, this weird cycle of 'okay, obviously i'm not ready to get off my meds, if this is how I feel normally', but it's not normal. its withdrawl from your medication. lexapro is a BITCH. withdrawls from it is even worse. how i feel right now in the midst of getting off of lexapro isn't how i'll be forever, it just feels like it might be because MY BRAIN WAS REWIRED
this isn't to poo poo on antidepressants btw. they saved my life. it's just getting off of them can be as scary as depression was sometimes. I just hope that things balance out, you know? my brain has to remember how to function without this med

psychiatry is crazy you go in there and are like “i wanna kill myself” and they’re like “ok here’s the medicine that MIGHT make you feel better but it also has a high chance to make you kill yourself like 10x faster than you would’ve before so just let us know how that goes”

It’s June 2025 which marks one year of me beginning my dosage of an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) — a type of antidepressant. I started taking the medication after therapy alone wasn’t proving to be effective enough to treat my severe generalized anxiety disorder.
So here’s my list of things I wish I had known when first considering medication, for those who may be struggling to make the decision themselves :
(PLEASE have it be noted that this list doesn’t pertain to other forms of mental health medication such as antipsychotics or HRT)
How/where do I get medication?: Most SSRIs don’t require a direct diagnosis, so no need to stress over getting a psychiatrist (unless you decide you need one). In my case I simply approached my general health provider, explained my symptoms I’ve been experiencing, and decided with their help which medication might work best to try first. For those without a doctor/insurance however there ARE recourses for you to access medication! Either search for an online medication subscription or approach a local mental health clinic/agency for assistance in finding affordable medication sources
Does the medication work immediately?: No, sadly. Most SSRI’s take about two to three weeks to reach their full potential in the body. During that period of change you may see side effects as your brain adjusts to the medication.
What are the side effects?: Common side effects can be nausea, vomiting, sexual dysfunction, dizziness, or changes in sleep habits. Most of these side effects leave after the medication reaches full effect. DANGEROUS side effects include increased suicidal thoughts, apathy, lack of emotion, or increased symptoms of mental illness. If you begin a medication and experience any dangerous side effects it’s usually a sign that your dosage or medication itself is not a proper fit. ASK FOR HELP IF THIS HAPPENS
How does an SSRI work?: Mental illnesses affect the levels of serotonin or other chemicals in the brain. In my case with GAD, my brain was getting rid of my serotonin faster than I could properly use it, leading to near constant fear. SSRIs work by helping the brain hold onto serotonin for extended lengths of time.
What substances should I avoid on medication?: Depending on what you take, the things to avoid may change. But common things to avoid are competing medications, alcohol consumption, high intake of certain recreational drugs, and certain foods. (Lexapro for example cannot be combined with grapefruit)
Does medication replace therapy?: For some people one or the other works fine on its own! However in my experience therapy is important for learning coping mechanisms and self soothing which can assist in places that medication does not
What convinced me to go on medication?: Before being medicated I was experiencing severe occasional panic attacks, depressive episodes, and almost constant worry and fear. I was afraid that meds may change who I was so I avoided trying them. Until my professor explained that anxiety is like being in a hotel full of wonderful rooms but being too scared to leave the one terrible room to explore. Medication locks the terrible room from your access, allowing for you to explore the hotel with freedom and confidence.
Help! I’m scared. What if taking medication changes my personality/skills/art?: I was afraid of the very same thing. I believed that without suffering I would not be the same artist and person. But instead, medication has helped me enjoy the world around me and have more energy and confidence to be who I am and flourish in creativity!! When you have a mental illness, it makes you even less accepting of change than even a normal person is. Even if that change is for the betterment of yourself: Fear of change causes you to stay miserable rather than find relief. The bravest thing I have done and that you can do for yourself is to take the leap into a positive change.
It’s more courageous to overcome.
