Fun Catholic Lord of the Rings trivia for you:
Tolkien had a devotion to St. John the Evangelist (which should not have been surprising, given his name).
Traditionally, the symbol of St. John the Evangelist is an eagle.
There's no indication it's intentional allegory, but it does add a very cool layer to those scenes.

I'm struggling a little with getting into this book and unfortunately I think it's because the writing is bad. Like for example:
Tumblr media
"The closer I came, I realized it was the butler" - I don't think this is how sentence structure works, sorry! Try "As I came closer, I realized" maybe?
I am by no means a historian but I feel like the dialogue in this isn't trying well (or consistently) to be of the time - not as relevant in this passage, but would a butler really tell a titled lady to "Drink up"? Even if he did catch her snooping earlier.
(Speaking of things on which I am not an expert: the story is set in 1806, and I could be wrong, but I feel like two years is like a minimum to age Madeira.)
Finally, the tense switches: "That was an hour away. The service and then burial will be very late." I had already thought the author was struggling with tense a little; this was the most egregious example so far.

"I despise the dust that forms me and speaks to you. This dust you may persecute and kill, but I defy you to rob me of that independent life I have given myself down through the ages and in the heavens." ~Saint-Just
Tumblr media
"Late in the afternoon, after a quick identification at the Revolutionary Tribunal, the death procession assembled. Saint-Just stood up in the first cart, his head held high, his neck bare, a carnation in his buttonhole, his eyes cooly surveying the crowds that lined the street." The Twelve Who Ruled p. 380
I feel like this might be an embellished story because nobody else mentions it, but who gave him the flower?!

The thing about finally rereading the first Sword of Truth book is that that I was COMPLETELY OBSESSED with this series when I was in high school. I originally found it when my mom flipped past an episode of the tv series and as soon as I saw that "adapted from" I was ON IT. Totally eclipsed the show lol. Fan art and poetry may have ensued.
However, I have not touched them in the 12+ years since high school, and every time I've seen the series independently come up online, the consensus seems to be that it's not great. I do remember its tendency to monologue repeatedly (and some questionable plot elements), so I thought, maybe they're right?
One work day into the audiobook (and probably at least 5 more to go, lord save me), I can't answer that, but I can say that it's taking itself very seriously and so far I absolutely cannot XD The number of things that are still ingrained in my brain that I'd forgotten about is astonishing.

So today some teenage LADS LADS LADS came into the library and quickly absconded to the teen section. It was a busy day but I quickly realised that they were (a) sniggering, and (b), moving the vast majority of our Alice Osemans and other LGBTQ teenage books into the True Crime section. *eww, sigh*
Now I am a library manager and a nerd and an actor. I LOVE performing. I also struggle with confrontation, so I hardly ever go down the "telling off route." No. My absolute favourite way of telling a teenage customer their behaviour is unacceptable is to go full improv-library-troll "YES, AND" on them.
So I was like OH MY GOODNESS are you making a political statement on the UK Supreme Court ruling? That's FANTASTIC why didn't I think of that! It truly is a crime isn't it? Trans women are women and the ruling affects all of us whether we are cis or trans. OH I see you've found Theo Parish's book! They got nominated for a Carnegie award this year. And there's a really important trans character in Heartstopper - have you seen the series? The actress who plays her is brilliant, she was in a couple episodes of Doctor Who as well, you might have watched that. Oh and this book is about an LGBTQ group in a high school, it may be helpful or relatable to you lot...
Anyway the way these lads' faces changed to pure MORTIFICATION as I waved Simon James Green's GAY CLUB at them before they RAN AWAY from me mid-rant was a glorious thing to behold and I am very glad I will forever in their minds be the Overly Enthusiastic Librarian Who Wanted Them To Borrow The Gay Books.
Anyway, to my queer, trans, and gender-non-conforming folks: I see you, I love you, I will always defend you. You are safe at the library.
