Treasure Hunting in the Harvard Libraries – virtually for now.

Staff writer for the Harvard Crimson, Oliver L. Riskin-Kutz interviewed the librarians to show him their favorite or most under-appreciated piece from their collections. This was before the pandemic time, but his photo essay is now published on the Crimson, and we can look at the photos and learn about each collection at home. Read more about his photo essay.

While doing a treasure hunting in physical libraries is not possible now, and perhaps for some time, his wonderful photo essay gives us an opportunity to share some of the unique collections from the Harvard Libraries online, and for you to meet the librarians virtually.

Jessica Evans Brady, a research collection librarian from the Fine Arts Library, presented this artists book entitled “Memory and landscape: unveiling the historic truths of Chile, 1973-1990.”

One of the exciting things about having a museum library is the occasional donation of rare books! The Illinois State Museum library has quite a rare book collection, most of them dating from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, but from time to time, we receive a donation that goes back much further. 📚 The items pictured here range from 1918 all the way back to 1770, and one of the books even came with an old calling card and some correspondence from a prominent ornithologist. 📚 #NationalLibraryWeek #RareBooks #LibraryCollection #IllinoisStateMuseum http://bit.ly/2D4VtGM

The [Library] Collective 2017

Last month I attended the 2017 Library Collective conference Knoxville, TN. It was everything I imagine the ideal conference should be! The attendees were open and welcoming and the sessions were based on practice and full of active learning experiences. Despite missing part of the first day due to flight delays and making it just in time to give my own presentation with my colleague, Juliene McLaughlin - it was a delightful two days full of learning.

I also played around with Paper for my visual notes.

Emotional Intelligence by Design (In a Library Workplace), Dory Cochran & Laura Beth Cochran

So, a librarian and an architect walk into a conference... this was one of the most interesting sessions I’ve been to at a library conference. I loved their way of facilitating the session and the activities that they chose were refreshing. From the session description, “By storyboarding spatial experiences, participants will explore self-awareness, identify boundaries of space, and discover implementation strategies to promote usable and beautiful work environments.”

We’re chatting a lot about Digital Scholarship at UG Library. This session was a great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the current environment.

This session really pushed me to push past my comfort zone - the activities were fresh and creative! Taking elements from improv it was a highly interactive and engaging session.

Knowledge, Reputation, & Image: Crafting & Communicating a Professional Brand, Ashleigh Coren & Chanelle Pickens

Ashleigh and Chanelle were engaging and hit on a lot of things I’ve been thinking about lately (personal branding and digital identity). I loved their session. Pardon my poor grammar, etc. in my “Artist’s statement” - this activity was fun and I’m looking forward to revising and refining my statement.
