I was honestly a bit surprised by the latest round of Bolshoi promotions. I had been predicting a promotion for Mikhalkin —he's got the repertoire under his belt, the height/look, and Vaziev clearly likes him. It just seemed like his time but my guesses for the ladies were completely off the mark.
The biggest surprise on that front was seeing Elizaveta Kruteleva getting bumped up from soloist to first soloist. I just don’t see anything in her dancing right now that really demands that kind of promotion—especially when you’ve got dancers like Koshkareva, Maimula, and Smirnova also in the soloist ranks. I was particularly surprised that Koshkareva was passed over, given how frequently she’s been cast in principal/leading soloist level roles.
Maimula is also an interesting comparison to Kruteleva: she’s also a shorter dancer and covers almost the exact same repertoire, but she’s younger and has already danced major roles like Masha and the Sylph—roles Kruteleva hasn’t tackled yet (and, to be honest, I personally prefer Maimula’s dancing). Smirnova has only just arrived, so promoting her now would be too soon, but she definitely seems like someone who could be on the fast track through the ranks. Again, I’m not saying any of them had to be promoted this time, but I really thought Vaziev would want to keep a First Soloist spot open for one of them in the near-ish future.
Also, I was a bit surprised to see Kretova finally promoted to Prima. Especially since the Bolshoi’s been pretty quick to push dancers like Shipulina and Kaptsova out of full-time contracts once they hit 40. Personally, I don’t think Kretova has that ‘it’ factor or star quality, but after thinking it over I can sort of see why she was chosen. She fits into a part of the repertoire that Zakharova used to cover which require a certain maturity and dramatic presence which Vaziev's younger protégées don't have yet (and I do think Zakharova is actually, mostly, 99.99% retired now).
Kruteleva was so far off my radar that I had to google search her — and I didn't recognize her! Admittedly, I don't follow the Bolshoi as closely as I do the Mariinsky, so I really had no reaction to her promotion but hoped it was deserved. I looked at her repertoire and it was surprising. Some corphyees at the Mariinsky have more repertoire and she's a 20008 grad, so going on a 20-year career. It's odd, right? But I did watch a few clips of her and her dancing is solid, and reminds of old-school Bolshoi style. Hopefully, she gets more leading roles to match her rank. Your comparison/contrast to Maimula is spot on.

Kretova — I was also surprised but very happy for her. She's really clawed her way there via Kremlin Ballet and MAMT (Stanislavsky). Maybe not in that order, but I'm pulling this from memory. She seems to be really good in neoclassical work and has dramatic flair, so I hope she gets a few more years to dance leading roles as prima. Her recent outing Mekhmene Banu in Legend of Love was highly praised by the Moscow public. She's like the Novikova of the Bolshoi, minus the classical rep, but in the sense that she's considered a prima by the audience long before she got the title. Kudos! I honestly love this for Kretova when (it seems) that no one saw it coming. I pulled this 7-year-old clip because it syncs with what you had described as her special repertoire that requires maturity, sophistication, drama that the youngsters would struggle to perform.

Diana Vishneva... She's always speaking about her love for Vaganova and about the importance of her teacher Ludmila Kovaleva (and she's also the only one to get a perfect score at vaganova). Do you think that D.Vishneva will eventually move to teaching at Vaganova, becoming a new Kovaleva? Or Maybe take Nikolai Tsiskaridze place and become Rector?
I dont know. I don't know if that's actually the life that Vishneva wants, she seems quite content with her current artistic merits and curating all the things related to Context Pro and her foundation. The bigger problem is whether the job will open and whether she can get it. With Valery Gergiev's incredible power at the head of both major theaters and knowing how pro-Putin he is, I can't imagine he will be quick to support any attempts by Vishneva to vie for that position, especially considering Vishenva's pro-Ukraine stance among other 'Western' views she has expressed.
Many people think Tsiskaridze will only leave VBA for the Bolshoi artistic or general director job. He and Gergiev, who is now 'acting general director of both BT and MT' have had a rocky relationship in the past, particularly when they were both working in Moscow. But nowadays, Tsiskaridze is quick to praise Gergiev at any opportunity in the press, calling him a genius in interviewers. Tsiskaridze is both cunning and ambitious, he knows being in Gergiev's good graces is absolutely essential to getting the job he wants. But there are other factors and other opposition to consider. Makhar Vaziev, still the Bolshoi's ballet artistic director is more cunning than Vladimir Urin (the former general BT director) who was tossed out several years before his contract expired. Vaziev managed to keep his post despite all the political pushing in the last few years, as long as he's there, there's no job opening for Tsiskaridze, because we all know Gergiev isn't going anywhere either. (I'd fire Vaziev for the current state of BT under his management, but that's an entirely separate topic).
But it's also not a guarantee that Tsiskardize would even theoretically get the job. Yes, he's powerful and famous...but he's got a lot of enemies as well. There is opposition, younger administrators who could desire the post as well. I'm thinking of people like the incredibly motivated Maxim Sevagin, who became director of MAMT at only 24 years old, Alexey Miroshnichenko currently ballet director at the Perm State Opera, and, Andrey Kuglin who is creating an absolute powerhouse company at Mikhailovsky in collaboration with Nacho Duato.
What's more intriguing to me, is the state of things at MT. Andrian Fadeyev was recently named Artistic Director of MT, and it appears that he's going to continue being the AD at Yakobson as well...which is WILD to me. This is not the same thing as Gergiev just managing both from afar, he is supposed to be on the ground, rehearsing and actively involved in the day-to-day operations of both groups. Yes, they're both in SPB, but just one of those jobs is a job and a half I don't know how he will manage both. Of course, it's possible that he just neglects Yakobson completely, but I wouldn't be surprised if this appointment doesn't last long. If the MT job opens up, does Tsiskaridze want it? Can he get it?

Oh lovely! Happy anniversary you two! Dearest precious! 😭🌷 I meant to send this yesterday but something suddenly came up and I couldn’t finish writing, but here it is! I’m so so sorry, it seems like I’m always late for everything *cry* Thank you, thank you for your hard work all long! You’ve came so far and yet the road ahead of you is still extending long!
A whole year is a long time, for the youth and the elderly. It could be chaotic - lot could happen in a year! Ups and downs, almost as if you’re spinning on a ferris wheel.
The difference is - on a ferris wheel all you can do is just sit by, watch, and hope you’ll end up where you want to be again. Whilst when you’re in this wild ride of life, you have two options: to either give in or to fight and push through. Life really is complicated, isn’t it?
Even so, as complicated as it is, look at you two! Who has managed to keep this blog alive for 1 year all the while hitting 1000 followers. It’s incredible! Being consistent is hard already, let alone always motivated at the same time!
So please, I beg you to treat yourselves well, both physically and mentally. Give yourselves a pat on the back - better yet a hug, for everything they’ve done for you and for pushing through all the hardships, don’t be too harsh on them. 
As a part of the community you’ve built from the ground up, I want to thank both of you so, so sincerely for creating such a safe place where - not only I, but I believe everyone here - can go to after a long day.
Being here brings me comfort and joy. It’s bizarre how strangers from the internet could bring so much impact to a person. Every time I visit this blog, it’s almost as if all of my problems were washed away for an amount of time - as if I was in my own little world and nothing else mattered. 
I have never found such feelings of comfort from other people outside of my family. Yet, it never cease to impress me how both of you - people I’ve never met face to face in real life, managed to build a place that brings me so much joy and comfort.
Your talents mesmerizes me, your passion inspired me, and your dedication motivated me. I wish to be able to bring people joy like both of you do.

Lots of Asks….
Catching up to my inbox. I've been super busy at work, but a lot of these have been on my mind. Thoughts on Yulia Stepnova, initially at the Mariinsky now at the Bolshoi. I have no idea what the politics were at the Mariinsky the impeded her career. Stepanova was dancing soloist roles at the Mariinksy, but a promotion was elusive. She moved to Moscow, first with MAMT (Stanislavsky), and then the Bolshoi and now she's a prima. Clearly, the move was a good one for her. I think she's a wonderful dancer, nuanced, subtle. However, I find that she's such a fish out of water in Moscow—she just doesn't have the big bravado Bolshoi vibe. She's definitely a Mariinsky ballerina and I wish her career could have flourished there, but glad she's a prima. I really like her a lot. Wondering if I think Sofya Valiullina made a mistake by going to the Bolshoi rather than the Mariinsky because she has a so-so teacher and Kuprina and Koshkaryova are getting more featured roles… I am living in an alternate universe in which Valiulina accepted a contract with the Mariinksy and fast-tracked to soloist, eventually becoming a star. She has the Mariinsky elegance with a nice splash of bravado that would make her a real stand-out. Alas, that's not happening. I also wonder if she's not as favored as the other two because she doesn't have the requisite Bolshoi body (extremely thin, very leggy.) Valiullina has some curves and Vaziev's obsession with Zakharova lookalikes makes for some really lousy casting choices and bewildering promotions. (Kovaleva, Denisova, Sergeenkova). Another alternate universe is one in which she returns to the Mariinsky after a few years at the Bolshoi….has anyone done that? Usually the migration is the other way, but one can dream. Daria Kulikova's debut in The Nutcracker. Wrote about it here. I only saw small snippets and I really liked it. I mean…she'd only graduated a month prior, but she was sweet, has lovely stage presence. Looking forward to seeing her career develop.
Do I read into the scheduling of Khoreva's (afternoon) and Shakirova's (evening) most recent Swan Lake performances? No, not really. Lots of questions about my thoughts on Khoreva's Swan Lake…
It was…middling. I just think Khoreva is a bit of a self-absorbed dancer and she really needs to develop strong, emotional connections with her partner, especially for Swan Lake. From the short clips that I saw she can do the technical things, but performances seem flat on video. Maybe there is more spark in the theater? She's not my fave, but it seems her career is ascendant not matter what. So many questions on the recent Vaganova Grads….
As for the careers of this year's crop of Vaganova graduates other than the BIG 3, we'll see them all soon on the stage and I wish them all luck! I imagine that the transition from school life to theater life is quite a shift…even shock. I try to imagine what it's like for them at 18/19, having to find apartments, make friends, figure out the politics at a company. They were big fish in a small pond, and now they're in a much bigger pond with so many talented dancers around them, all vying for roles. It can really mess with their heads. That's why I've always felt that they need a several years in the corps to just grow up as people and artists. That said, I think the Big 3 will likely be fine. they're going to need some time to adjust and settle. I'm not worried about their careers….but I think the Vaganova hype can be a double-edged sword, perhaps. Putting intense early pressure on them without giving them time and space to develop artistry…we shall see.

Anche se si festeggia da poco Halloween in Italia, in Puglia i più anziani hanno subito colto l'essenza di questa festa e partecipano con entusiasmo e devozione alla celebrazione dell'occulto e della morte, infatti quando i bambini suonano ripetutamente ai loro citofoni recitando la celebre frase "dolcetto o scherzetto?" gli viene risposto "l murt d mamt", "l murt d'attand", "sciatavinn, kitemmurt", "avit rutt u cazz, l murt ca tnit", etc etc..
