I feel like Starlight Glimmer filled a role that would have been much better filled by Sunset Shimmer who already existed pre-season 5. (Starlight could remain a villain for that season but in terms of having a new reoccurring character Sunset would have been a much better fit).

Sunset’s redemption was much more thought out and satisfying compared to Starlight’s. I cant stand the argument that she was “redeemed too fast” because it took a movie and a half for her not to just completely be hated and even after she was fully part of the group, she was still reminded of/suffering from her past actions (as seen in one of last movies made Forgotten Friendship).

In comparison, starlight was basically forgiven by everyone for much worse and was rarely reminded of the consequences of her actions in the show. The few examples we get of her remorse and potential consequences aren’t great (There was an episode of her going to her village with fears of being hated, but unlike sunset who was actually blatantly hated, starlight’s wasn’t hated at all and so she learned no lesson in the end)

Sunset’s backstory is also more complex, and she would be a much better “voice of reason” to Twilight instead of Starlight. Twilight and sunset have a good chemistry together (I’m speaking in terms of friendship but I won’t deny that I love Twiset) and Sunset’s relationship to Princess Celestia makes her Sunset a more complex and interesting character with the ability to help twilight through her own experience with the Princess (she is the only one in the world besides twilight to have that kind of experience. I personally feel like Sunset is the yang to Twilight’s yin (as seen with her cutie mark)

I apologize for writing a whole essay, but after seeing your post about starlight I had to add my two cents. They definitely did a disservice to Sunset’s character and she was set up in a way to be so much more.

Oh, yes, yes! Sunset Shimmer is great. In the first movie she wasn't that good of a character imo, but the second movie made her a beloved fan favorite. Sunset Shimmer had a whole movie dedicated to her earning the trust of everyone she wronged, and her becoming an accepted organic member of the group. 

Sunset Shimmer is just a better version of Starlight Glimmer. Like I said, I like the idea of Starlight's character on paper, but the execution was just so heavily flawed. I don't blame some people for falling out of the show because of her presence, but for me personally her presence wasn't enough to ruin the show for me because the other characters that I actually cared about remained intact and there was plenty of other good stuff to enjoy (Until the school of friendship era, of course). And you're right, Sunset and Twilight have a better relationship. 

The main reason Sunset never appeared in the main show is because Hasbro didn't want to alienate people who never watched/weren't a fan of Equestria Girls. Which is understandable, I mean, I'm not a fan of EG, aside from the ways it expands the main show. But Sunset Shimmer deserved more outside of EG, it's implied she and Twilight are yin and yan. And she's better than Starlight Glimmer. 

I need to create some more theories about Sunset Shimmer…

Idle conversations. Any other pony might find the constant interruptions aggravating, but Valen’s questions make Twilight consider things she hadn’t thought of before. It’s nice to talk with a fellow curious mind.

ok lets talk because I put too much thought into dumb things...

the Eds eye colours are the colours of their rooms, I thought that would be cool.

Ed would be happy to be a dragon, but he can't fly (not because his wings are tiny, he just can't coordinate them)

Edd is a unicorn because despite trying, I couldn't find another species that really fit, I'm sure people would have liked him as a deer but I didn't. his cutiemark is a magnifying glass and a bug because just the magnifying glass was booring.

Eddy's a griffin because he's greedy lol. but also he gives me cat energy and I thought it was funny that he hates birds. his bird half is a pink cockatoo cuz they lowkey look like Eddy lmao, but they're also smart, crafty and very loud.

the rest of the culdesac kids species are based of vibes, I woulda made Kevin a pegasus but griffin made him work better as basically Eddy's rival, I nearly made the cat half a Cheetah but the spots didn't suit him. Jonny was nearly a pony too. I was gonna make Rolf a Yak but I hear people find them iffy plus he wouldn't look like "stretch"

the Kankers were a tossup between Changelings and Sirens, I decided Changelings because the Sirens in mlp don't look design friendly, also the kankers don't exactly sing, also even though they more accurately feed on misery, they themselves are more into "feeding on love". I know changelings look like their old designs when they feed on love but I didn't want them to look the same! they look like the good versions because they're just kids or because their desire to feed on love is fake or smth... their eyes are pink cuz of their matching belt...

the downside is I only got to design one cutiemark 😭😢
