hello master meshi, i was wondering if we know what kabru's party gets up to post-canon? i think i've read fics where rin has a magic items shop and mickbell and kuro run a rival noodle shop to mithrun but i'm wondering if those are canon or fan speculation
There's a small blurb to what the characters do at the end of their profiles in the new adventurer's bible but I haven't seen it translates so every time I just run it on google translate forgive me
Kabru - Stayed in Melini and is studying under Yaad
Mickbell and Kuro - Running a general store? together
Dia - Married working with her husband in Kahka Brud
Rin - Stayed with Kabru in Melini working as a pharmacist?
Holm - Working in Kahka Brud
Here's the originals for anyone can actually translate it

An Experiment With Machine Translation/AI
Hello there, my friends! Usually, I'm posting about trans stuff. Today, I'm going to switch it up for translation.
So you see, I'm a student and translation studies are one of the degrees I'm desperately vying for. This week, one of my classes had an interesting assignment: We got an excerpt from a book (The Map of Us by Jules Preston) and our goal was not only to translate it but also create a second version, using a machine translation or ChatGPT. A lot of translation work nowadays is being more or less AI's factchecker and editor, so like it or not (and you can believe me that I don't like it), it's a skill to have.
And I thought I would share the comparisons! They're not surprising. They all show that unedited AI or MT is not by any means ready to replace human translators, the least of all in art. However, the ways they fail are quite interesting!
I was also fully prepared for ChatGPT, being, you know, a language model, to blow poor Google Translate out of the water. And while it was definitely the more creative of the two, it also performed... worse overall...? You can be the judge of that!
And of course, this post is best enjoyed if you're a Czech speaker, but if you happen not to speak Czech or Slovak, don't hesitate to read on anyway, I'll provide additional translation back into English for the fails.
And... if you happen to be a human with a penchant for translation and you're cringing at my solutions, trembling with the need to correct me, you will make me cry, but go ahead.
Example 1:
ENG: She did not ask his opinion, for he had already shown himself to be difficult and ill-tempered when it came to making a choice.
HT (human translator): Na jeho názor se ani neptala, protože už věděla, jak protivný dokázal být, když se musel rozhodovat.
GT (Google Translate): Neptala se ho na názor, protože se už ukázal jako obtížný a špatně naladěný, když došlo na volby.
[She did not ask his opinion, because he has already shown himself to be hard to do and ill-tempered when it came to elections.]
AI (ChatGPT): Neptala se na jeho názor, protože už ukázal, že je těžko rozhodnutelný a náladový, pokud šlo o výběr.
[She did not ask his opinion, because he has already shown himself to be hard to decide and moody in the matter of selection.]
In this one, I think the bots reached a tie in being wrong. Machine translation is notoriously wonky on composite sentences, however ChatGPT genuinely surprised me with somehow managing to "think" a little forward and already connecting "difficult" (těžko) with "making a choice" (rozhodnout se) and laboriously birthing "těžko rozhodnutelný" which would mean "difficult to decide/judge" but in the context of e.g. a competition being tight and it being difficult for the judges to choose the winner. It's not used with sentient beings at all. In my version, I've decided to merge the descriptors "difficult and ill-tempered" into one word "protivný" which is a little more general in meaning, so it encompasses both and drives home the idea of being a neutral way to call out somebody's mean and problem-generating behavior.
Example 2:
ENG: Every time she would have to press a small button and the top of the Royal Quiet Deluxe typewriter would pop open automatically, making the interior of the machine accessible.
HT: Pokaždé, když se to stalo, musela zmáčknout čudlík, aby se horní část jejího psacího stroje Royal Quiet Deluxe automaticky odklopila a ona mohla sáhnout dovnitř.
GT: Pokaždé by musela stisknout malé tlačítko a horní část psacího stroje Royal Quiet Deluxe se automaticky otevřela, čímž se zpřístupnil vnitřek stroje.
(no fail here as far as I can tell)
AI: Každýkrát musela stisknout malé tlačítko a víko psacího stroje Royal Quiet Deluxe se automaticky otevřelo, což umožnilo přístup k vnitřku stroje.
[Everyonetimes she had to press a small button and the top of the Royal Quiet Deluxe typewriter would pop open automatically, making it possible to access the interior of the machine.]
Now, the word "každýkrát" means "every time," however, in SLOVAK, not in Czech. Two completely different languages. In Czech? "Každý" means "everyone" and "krát" means "time(s)" (as in multiplying something), so "everyonetimes." I'm quite sure that passing the word as Czech counts as an anti-Slovak microaggression XD Google Translate slayed here, no mistakes, I would just word it differently because I've got that Human Touch TM and an insufferable superiority complex.
Example 3:
ENG: There was an 'e' in 'nose' and 'ear.'
HT: Nos i ucho měly 'o.'
This one is rigged against both GT and AI because what they do is gluing the most probable translation equivalents together, and they have no way of knowing that the letter the words "nose" (nos) and "ear" (ucho) share in Czech is "o" and not "e". GT performed as expected.
GT: V 'nosu' a 'uchu' bylo 'e'.
(besides making it sound a little like the letter was physically in someone's nose and ear, it's fine)
But ChatGPT? I wouldn't actually expect it to solve the problem and correctly switch the letters, but given that it is supposed to be much more advanced than GT, I had my hopes high and thought that it would show at least a trace of acknowledgment of the part being somehow difficult. AI: Bylo tam 'e' ve slovech 'nos' a 'ucho'.
[There was an 'e' in the words 'nos' and 'ucho'.] (liar)
Despite those words noticeably lacking in the "e" department, it's worth noting that while GT went out of its way to try to make it sound natural (too natural, in fact), its supposedly smarter cousin fully copied the English sentence structure, which is technically gramatically correct but sounds extremely reverse-Czenglish. (I guess if Czenglish is a Czech-speaking learner's English influenced by Czech, that makes an English-speaking learner's Czech... Ech. It sounds extremely Ech.)
Example 4:
ENG: Did it matter what an imaginary explorer's lips looked like or felt like?
HT: Záleželo vůbec na tom, jak vypadaly rty imaginárního dobrodruha, nebo jaké byly na dotek?
GT: Záleželo na tom, jak vypadaly nebo jak vypadaly rty imaginárního průzkumníka?
[Did it matter what an imaginary explorer's lips looked like or looked like?]
AI: Záleželo na tom, jak vypadají nebo jak se cítí rty imaginárního dobrodruha?
[Did it matter what an imaginary explorer's lips looked like or how they were feeling?]
Do facts care about the your (lips') feelings? As someone who likes to play around with GT quite a lot, I'm very familiar with the "when in doubt, just repeat whatever you've last said" strategy. If you fuck with it long enough, you can make the poor tool repeat one phrase so many times it fills the entire line. However, the mistake ChatGPT made perplexes me. It feels very humanizing. It's a mistake I can easily imagine an actual learner making, failing to distinguish between "to feel like" (comparison) and "to feel" (to experience a feeling). It's a mistake I would totally make several years ago, and fuck it, maybe even now if I'm trying to read fast on a very bad day. Good job at doing a bad job, GPT.
Anyway, these 4 were probably the funniest and most interesting of the whole excerpt. I must admit that analyzing them turned out to be a humbling experience because revisiting my work, I've noticed several mistakes I've made as well that I can't take back, because I've already turned the assignment in. Oh well. However, I did have fun!
I hope you had fun, too! Stay těžko rozhodnutelní!

Japanese Endorsement of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire
The Godzilla Double Feature in 109 Screen X locations in Japan started last night where they were showing Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla X Kong back to back with an intermission, which was a genius move that I need to happen here in the States immediately.

But anyways, the reviews from the Japanese viewers who are seeing GxK for the first time are some of the best I've ever seen (excuse the machine translations):

I don't know about you, but someone telling me "it was a silly movie made by an idiot and it was very good" is a ringing endorsement and would get my butt into a seat faster than anything else. 🤣🤣🤣

Today in why not to trust Google Translate when it comes to Japanese articles:
Its AI somehow "hallucinated" female genitals due to the association of oshikatsu with sex work. It's not rare for machine translations to be affected by overseas mistranslations and stereotypes, so it also happened to an acquaintance that an article about black communities in Japan (黒人系日本人) decided to suddenly become about "black fashion" solely because of the common overseas misconception that "kei=style" when it's also the middle term for ethnic groups.

Every goddamn lines of Wesker in CVX but Japanese
Wesker's lines in jp version of Code: Veronica X are machine translated. Blue is English and purple is translation from Japanese script. If there're lines without trans then it's because en ver has the same meaning with jp ver
Meeting Claire
「おがクリスの妹:クレア・レッドフィールドか。」
"Greetings! You must be the lovely Claire Redfield."
"You're Chris's sister, Claire Redfield?"
「お前の兄:クリスに殺され、復讐のために地獄から蘇った亡霊だ。」
"Lets just say that I’m a ghost, coming back to haunt your...dear brother."
"Killed by your brother Chris, I'm a ghost coming back from hell for revenge."
(Mmm yes the first thing Jp Wesker did when he met Claire is making shit up when in fact it was his pet tyrant shishkabob-ed him)
「その通り。この島を攻撃したのも、この俺だ。まさかお前がここに捕まっているとは知らずにな。だが、却ってそれが幸いした。お前はクリスをここに呼んでくれた。妹想いの奴は、必ずこの島へ現れるだろう。楽しみだよ。」
"It seems there’s not much explaining to do is there? I was the one who attacked this island. Who'd of thought you'd be hanging about? All the better for me, now that the cat dragged in this nice surprised. Your ever so caring brother, he'll definitely show up. I must thank you for being such good bait."
"That's right. It was I who attacked this island. Though I had no idea you'd been held captive here. However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. You brought Chris here. That brother of yours, who cares a lot for his sister, will definitely show up on this island. I’m looking forward to it."
「俺はクリスが憎い!」
"I despise Chris!"
「お前が死ねば、クリスは悲しむだろう。」
"Oh how your brother will be surprised to see you die"
"If you die, Chris sure will be devastated."
(En version made it look like Wesker thought Chris would have a "omg you died???" reaction to dead Claire first than an emotional breakdown... I mean it's usually the case if your loved ones suddenly died)
「俺だ。何ッ!?そうか・・・すぐ戻る。」
"What? What is it?! Stay there, I’m coming."
"It's me. What?! I see... I'll return soon."
「お前にもう一活躍してもらった方が良さそうだ。もう少しそ命を預けよう」
"It appears you may be of some further use to me, I’m going to let you live...a little longer."
"It seems better to let you prove yourself useful one more time. I’ll let you keep that life of yours a little longer."
Saying hi to old "friend" (1)
「アレクシア!くそっ!もう目覚めてしまったのか!!」
"Alexia?! No! She's already fully awake."
"Alexia?! Damn it! She's already woken up?!"
「クリス…、やはり現れたな。」
"Chris. Oh little fishy, come see my hook."
"Chris... As I expected, you did show up."
(Uh...why it's so wildly different here?)
「待っていろ、クリス。今、プレゼントを送ってやる。俺から旧友へのささやかなもてなしだ。受けてくれ。」
"Chris, I'm sending some company to keep you entertained. Consider this a small welcoming gift from me. Enjoy."
"Just you wait, Chris. I'm going to send you a gift, a small token of hospitality from me to my old friend. Please accept it."
Saying hi to old "friend" (2)
「久しぶりだなクリス」
"Long time no see, Chris."
「目的はアレクシアだ。」
"I came for Alexia."
"My objective is Alexia."
「彼女を捕らえるために雇われた。」
"An organization hired me to capture her."
"I was hired to capture her."
「お前が憎い。八つ裂きにしても足らないほどな。お前が俺の計画を打ち壊した…。だから、俺は新たな組織に魂を売った。ここで死ね!!」
"You have no idea how much I hate you. You destroyed my plans, so now I sold my soul to a new organization. Now die."
"Oh how I despise you. So much that not even tearing you apart would be enough. You destroyed my plan...that's why I sold my soul to a new organization. Die here!"
「最後に教えてやる。ここのデータからお前の妹は南極にいる事が分かった。そして、アレクシアもな。残念だな。妹に会えずに死ぬとはな。」
"Here's a little secret Chris, I figured out that your sister is now in the Antarctic with Alexia. It's too bad you'll never be seeing her again."
"I’ll tell you one last thing. From the data here, I found out your sister is in the Antarctic, and so is Alexia. What a shame for you to die without being able to see your sister."
Wesker vs Alexia (not really)
「とうとう見つけたぞ、アレクシア。一緒に来るんだ。」
"At last, I found you Alexia. Come with me."
「お前は素晴らしいウイルス:T-Veronicaを作った。そして、そのサンプルは今、お前の体内にしかない。それが欲しいんだ。さぁ!」
"You're responsible for the creation of the T-Veronica virus. And now the only existing sample is in your body. I want it! Now!"
"You created the magnificent virus: T-Veronica. And now, its sample exists only in your body. I want it. Now!"
(Oh yeah, jp Wesker had a bit of fanboying over Alexia's subarashi virus I guess)
「力すぐでも連れて行くぜ!」
"You're coming with me!"
"I'll take you by force if I have to!"
「クリス!優秀な部下だった貴様に、ここは任せるとしよう。」
"Chris, since you're one of my best men, I'll let you handle this."
"Chris! You used to be an excellent underling, so I'll let you handle this." (Thanks Boss)
Wesker vs Chris
「見事だったな、クリス。結局アレクシアの研究は、大したものではなかった訳だ。こうなったら、後はお前への復讐を果たすだけだ!」
"Well done Chris. It turns out that Alexia's work wasn't much of anything, so now the only thing left now is revenge."
"Well done, Chris. In the end, Alexia’s research turned out to be nothing special. Now that it’s come to this, all that’s left is to take my revenge on you!"
「嬉しいぞ、クリス。アレクシアを追って来て、貴様を殺せるとは思わなかった。」
"Today's a good day, I came for Alexia, but killing you is even better."
"I’m glad, Chris. I never thought I’d be able to kill you while chasing Alexia."
「別に構わんよ。俺の手にはスティーブがあるからな。」
"Thats no longer a concern to me, I have Steve to work with."
"I don’t mind. After all I have Steve in my hands."
「奴の体内にはt-アレクシアが残っている。良い研究材料になるだろう。ひょっとしたら、俺のように蘇り、いつかお前の妹と再会できるかもしれんな。」
"In his body, there's still a little T-Alexia virus. Steve should be a good specimen. Maybe he'll come back alive, just as I did. And be able to see your sister again."
"There's still T-Alexia virus remains in his body. It will make for good research material. Who knows, maybe he’ll come back to life like I did and someday reunite with your sister."
(And right after that, jp Claire said 「スティーブを返して!」 which basically is "Give me Steve back!" instead of "Don't you touch him!")
「お嬢さん。残念だが、スティーブは先に部下が運び出したよ。」
"I'm sorry dearheart, but my men have already taken him."
"Young lady, I’m afraid my men have already taken Steve away."
(運び出す (to carry/transport to somewhere else) is used to refer to object more than people. Really tell you how much respect Wesker had for Steve's dead body)
Chris: "I'll end this once and for all, say 'hello' to my comrades who you've killed."/「今度こそ決着を付けてやる。貴様のせいで死んでいった仲間たちにあの世で詫びるんだな。」 ("This time, I’ll settle it once and for all. Go apologize to my comrades who died because of you in the other world!")
Wesker: 「大した自信だな、クリス。」
"I don't know where you get your confidence Chris."
"That's a lot of confidence, Chris."
「どうだ!人間である事と引き換えに手に入れた俺の力は」
"Sure i'm not human anymore, but look at the power I've gained!"
"How's that! The power I gained at the cost of my humanity!"
「その為ならどんな手段でも使ってやる。あの世に行くのはお前だ。」
"Magnificent, don't you think?"
"And I’ll use any means to achieve my goal. You’re the one who’ll be going to the other world!"
「おしかったな…」
"Nice try."
"That was close..."
「悪運の強い奴め。覚えておけ、次に会う時が貴様の最期だ。また会おう、クリス!」
"Today's your lucky day, next time we meet, don't count on another. Until we meet again."
"You’re one lucky bastard. Remember this: the next time we meet will be your last. Until we meet again, Chris!"
And that was it for Wesker and his wannabe Dio Brando phase in CV. He was still the same dramatic ass in both versions, however English script kinda tamed down his hatred for Chris. And jp Wesker was more "neutral" towards Claire without those mockingly affectionate words he said to her in en script. ("You must be the lovely Claire Redfield", "I'm sorry dearheart, but my men have already taken him")

I had a big "grammar nazi" phase a long time ago but now I've begun to actually enjoy seeing grammatical and ortographical "errors" in my native language as well as some awkardness in English that can only come from learning that language as foreign because at least I know that a human wrote that. there's a different vibe and a different type of errors in machine translation as well, and I appreciate the human mistakes there too

Google translate seems to think that "full av faen" means "full of shit." Does "full av faen" imply someone is lying or deceitful in addition to be malicious/grouchy, or is Google the one who's full of shit?
Google is full of shit.
"Full av faen" is difficult to translate as there's no direct English equivalent, and machine translations struggle with idioms in general. "Full of shit" is its best guess because it's the most direct translation, what Google doesn't know is that "full av faen" and "full of shit" have very different meanings.
I can see you've already read my original post on the matter, but to explain a bit more what the idiom means:
Full av faen generally means horrible person, someone who is malicious and thoroughly rotten. Typically someone who's acting out, if you're scrolling through someone's reactionary and super negative twitter profile you might say "Wow, this person is just full av faen."
Or if it's a pet it would be that cat who just scratches you no matter what, the cat who makes dog lovers feel vindicated (why I said "a particularly grouchy cat").
Full of shit means someone who's full of lies, and that's a very different meaning.
I recommend you take machine translations with a large dose of skepticism, and if you must use one then my go-to for many years now has been context reverso (link). This is a translator that searches for occurrences of the word or phrase you want translated in available texts online, and provides the human translation in context. I'm worried the avalanche of machine translations online may cause the quality of the service to decline, but so far I haven't noticed any decline and often use it for French or Italian translation. Take context reverso with a pinch of salt too, however, because I've had problems like "I asked for X to be translated and got a perfect translation, however a native speaker would have said Y, not X and so the perfectly translated X was in fact still wrong".
The only real remedy to imperfect translation is to learn the language, and even then your brain won't process a second language as well as a native language and there will be subtle differences in how you use it. I'm very good at English, fluent by most standards, my co-writer @theoriginalcarnivorousmuffin still catches me making weird choices or subtle mistakes that are textbook mistakes for language learners.

So, uh, "fun" fact: Be very careful with Google Translate and its input language settings, especially if you really have no idea what the text you're trying to translate is supposed to say, because under some circumstances it will blithely and confidently spit out reasonable-looking but extremely wrong translations, e.g., if the source language is set wrong. 😬 If you don't understand the source language at all, spot-checking some of the words to make sure they seem to make sense with the translation produced might be good idea.
I pasted in a German sentence from a post, since I wasn't familiar with some of the words used, and got a perfect English sentence instead of it just repeating the untranslated text, so I initially didn't notice that it was for some reason set to Thai as the source language. What I did notice was that the "translation" was wildly off from the input, only because I actually learned German and already had a rough idea what it should say. Puzzled, I put in a very similar sentence from the reblogs of the same post and got a completely different wrong "translation," also in perfect English.
At this point, I realized the problem with the settings, and confirmed that "Detect Language" correctly identified it as German, and produced a sensible translation when set to German or "Detect Language." Testing some other source languages, I found that most of them produced the expected behavior of just returning the untranslated text, but Thai produced false "translations" for both sentences, and French produced a false "translation" for one.
I don't know what caused it to "translate" stuff that wasn't in the language specified (when the usual behavior seemed/seems to be returning the untranslated text), but it definitely looked like a typical failure mode of GenAI just inventing output. I even tried translating the English back into Thai and playing the audio, just to see if it sounded like it could be transcribed as something resembling the original input text (it didn't to me), and translating the French "translation" back into French also didn't produce anything that seemed to closely resemble the original input, although I could at least identify a resemblance between one of the German words and one of the French words.
Entering an English sentence to be translated to German and setting the source language to Thai, French, Hebrew, or literally every other language I spot-checked caused it to generate a correct translation of the English sentence into German. I.e., in that case, it made absolutely no difference what language I told it the sentence was in, it simply ignored that setting and translated from English. 🙃
Google Translate has never been perfect, but I've found it very useful for a lot of stuff in the past. Seeing this is rather alarming.
