Something I learned today re: the interview with Larry after Magic announced his retirement and HIV diagnosis is that Larry publicly saying "it's probably the two toughest days I've had since my father passed away" was huge.

Not just for the obvious reasons, where he's likening how he felt after his father's suicide to how he felt in that moment (which, as HIV was considered a death sentence back then, isn't a big stretch--people literally thought they were going to watch Magic die over the next few years). But because his father's death was a completely off-limits subject. He never talked about it, no one was allowed to mention it--Sports Illustrated did in an article once and he didn't interview w/ them for almost a decade.

So him offering it up himself, unprompted, was completely out of left field. Really was him shedding a mask, beyond his reputation as just a very guarded, quiet person.

...also his lip quivering during the game still gets me.

I watched Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals and couldn’t help but cry

Warhammer 40k & D&D crossover Perturabo

Two Primarchs tonight We're onto one of my favorites and literally the petulant manchild that started all of this. Perturabo! Hopefully a bit more coherent than the original post but still quite ramblely

His name is Perturabo Olympia

He wandered back to the Lawful Evil city of Zazzil (Think of Evil Venice) Where devil contracts are as common as vendors on the street. All perfectly woven legal code and documents keeping Zazzil and the devil lords entangled and happy.

He returned because there was also a great importance on art and industry. So he could craft to his hearts content and get the praise he always sought and lend his ideas for the city defense as an ancient Brass dragon had set up outside of the city and was the city's villain

His future wife, Faustina, wandered into his gallery while waiting for a date set up by her father.

Perturabo found her staring utterly entranced by a painting of the Great Maelstrom/The Eye of Terror

She wanted to buy it but he refused to sell it

However instead of being turned away she "pestered" him into talking with her as she wasn't really interested in the man her father was trying to marry her off too.

Perturabo enjoyed her quick wit and her genuine praises as he could see the way her eyes lit up as she gushed over his sculptures or his paintings

They started their secret courtship though eventually Perturabo had enough of Faustina being pushed into something she didn't want and tried to get her father to see him as a potential spouse.

The father proposed of having a contest between the two suitors about who could produce the better art piece

He made an Impossible bird cage; as my head canon Perturabo loves making small metal sculptures of birds or delicate paper cranes just things that look impossible but work because of his knowledge of crafts

The father wasn't impressed by the birdcage however a devil spied it and ran back to the devil lord that was in Zazzil telling him of an art piece fit for his master

Perturabo was contemplating the legality of murder as his sculpture was far more technically advanced and of course to him it pleased the suited viewer, Faustina. The rival had used more expensive metals and other materials which the father was more impressed by but Faustina was enthralled by the delicate metal that looked like it should crumple and fold in on itself.

The Devil Lord also agreed with Faustina as he was enthralled by the piece. He purred with such a silver tongue praises and promises as he wanted to buy the piece right then and there. Perturabo refused as he said that he needed it for this competition.

The plaza went silent out of horror as Perturabo had said no to a Devil lord

Fustina had run behind Perturabo and started to beg him to sell the Devil lord the sculpture.

The Lord calmly asked why it was important and so with a small cruel smile Perturabo explained what it was for which turned the Devil Lord's ire from Perturabo to Faustina's father.

The cowardly man declared him the winner as soon Perturabo was able to get contracts and business from the Devil Lord.

Perturabo's wedding gift to Faustina was the painting of the Eye of Terror.

They have 5 children. In Zazzil they have a Common name, A business name, and then a family name First born son: Piero 'Rogal' Olympia Second born son: Ignazio 'Vulkan' Olympia Only Daughter: Martel 'Calliphone' Olympia (Following this one) Third Son: Fabrizio  'Ferrus' Olympia Youngest Son: Andrea 'Fulgrim' Olympia Future son once he renegotiates the contract with his wife on how many children they want: Russo 'Magnus' Olympia

Unlike his brothers whose sons are usually named after beloved sons in their warbands Perturabo did not give that honor instead choosing to name them after his favored brothers.

Piero, Ignazio, and Martel are all artificers and to whom he has revealed how to make a variant of power armor; it mixes magic and crafting. To activate the armor they say 'Iron Within' (they are most likely Armorer Artificers) (Or think of like sailor moon except with plate power armor instead of magical girl outfits and they use crossbows instead of bolters)

Not sure if the rest of you do this, but I kind of sometimes turn my characters’ retainers into supporting characters.  Like one of Zakuro’s is her estranged sister Sayuri.  I was tinkering around and didn’t really like the eye color of one of Kriss’s retainers, and next thing I knew I had overhauled them into Kriss’s parents and two of her sisters (Kriss is the youngest of seven daughters).

For reference, Kriss hails from Aerslaent.  While the canon tells us literally nothing what it’s like, from my supposition and basing on how the map depicts a Viking-esque longship in that region, in my head Aeslaent’s environment is much like the islands and cultures of the North Sea (Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands) and the Northern Empty is the North Sea.  So kind of this mix of northern Gaelic and Scandanavian, a bit like the Hebrides or the Isle of Skye, and just as rain-soaked and storm-battered.

Okay so I’m really just tinkering around with the character creator and want to show off because I had fun making these little people only I can see. :p

So from top to bottom we have:

Ryssuwil: The Old Bear of the Mountain and Kriss’s father.  A titan of a man whose rages literally shake the earth around him, he rarely speaks more than he needs to and more than a few think his only words are “[disapproving grunt]”, “[grudgingly approving grunt]”, and “[intimidating growl].”  Preferring to live out in the woods and mountains of his island and caring little for most people, his tempestuous romance with the sea witch Syggswys gave him seven daughters, all of which he typically refers to as simply “girl.”

Syggswys: The Storm Witch and Kriss’s mother.  A dangerous and wild woman who is technically not a pirate, her strange branch of conjurery and geomancy focuses on the waves and storms that plague the region.  Her magic can see a ship through a hurricane or navigate a reef, or likewise hide them from the kraken and sea serpents indigenous to the Northern Empty.  It can just as easily hex or bring down maladies upon a man who offends her, making her an object of fear and respect among the locals.  Having no small talent for rolling the bones and reading omens such as birds, stars and animal entrails, she comes ashore only when the portents tell her is right, which only contributes to the complex - and often stormy - relationship with Ryssuwil and the seven daughters she’s born him.

Iyrngeim: The Grey Siren and Kriss’s eldest sister.  A proud woman who prefers civilization far more than either of her parents, Iyrngeim makes her living as a skald, a local variety of bard, at the local jarl’s court.  While she does posses some small talent for magic, she prefers music and the finer things.  She thinks of her youngest sister as hotblooded and far too much like her father with Kriss’s berserker ways and affinity for animals.

Skoeflona: The Golden Oak and Kriss’s youngest sister.  Somehow not inheriting either of her parents’ proclivity for bloodsoaked carnage and violence (note that their entire courtship was a whirlwind of fire and blood), she serves as a wandering healer and conjurer.  A kindly and sweet tempered woman that Kriss is fiercely protective of, she has been seen tending to wounded animals as much as humans.  Some stories put her command of magic as rivaling that of her mother’s, while others claim she can speak to wild beasts.  Most of these are probably just superstitious locals.

Dan Drydek (Larry's Physical Therapist): It was a situation he was in almost daily. He had lost the structural stability in his spine. So it would slip into abnormal positions to try and lock itself, to get an artificial stability. That's like getting your finger stuck in a door and somebody's still pushing on the door. So what we had to do was unlock his spine, realign it, do techniques that would hold that for 4 hours, 6 hours, that type of thing, and then he'd go play basketball.

Larry Bird: Every time I would play I was wonderin' if I was gonna be in a wheelchair, if I was ever gonna be able to, you know, walk on the beach or hold my kids.

Dan: His pain in his quest for basketball became all encompassing. Very few people really knew what Larry was living with. Because, this was Larry's issue, and there was no sharing of his pain.

Larry: You know I prolly shoulda retired in '88, '89. But uh...it's that competition. Maybe one more chance, me and Magic to get together in the finals. But it never happened.
