Many of the library's books have abishai bound to them as protectors and prisoners -- draconic scaled devils from Tiamat's upper realm in the Nine Hells (Tom Baxa, Dungeon 29 featuring Randy Maxwell's AD&D 2e adventure "Ex Libris," TSR, May/June 1991)

Alright chat, the flip flop is free now, I CAN SHARE MY THEORY.
This started as a vague crack theory but it spiralled and now I have tangible evidence and a thought process and have spent the last week going INSANE but most of the theory rests on one stupid detail---namely, the brand of this mysterious keyholder's flip-flop---that I couldn't share until now.
This theory is---and hear me out---
Before he was a key, Buddy was actually a fictional storybook character turned real.
WARNING: Long, only vaguely coherent rambling and Inco going insane.
Okay I know you're like "wtf are you on about" so just. just. just hear me out pls
To understand this theory we need a little bit of context, which means talking about:
The Elephant Book
Tumblr media
"The Elephant Book" is an unfinished comic that Punko worked on before Cinderella Boy or Stagtown. It is a story about two characters who learn the secrets of a hidden organization, called Artifax... secrets that have to do with beloved fictional characters who become real because of readers' love for them. I don't want to spoil too much of it, but I highly recommend giving it a read if you like theorizing about Cinderella Boy. You can get it on her store here as an eBook. It got cancelled before the plot could be fully realized, but here's the thing---Punko has said that The Elephant Book informs Cinderella Boy.
This in itself is intruiging, but what is most fascinating to me---and here is where the flip-flop comes in, LMAO---is one particular plot point.
Again, I don't want to give away too much of the Elephant Book because it's a fantastic story. However, it does feature one part about one book character in particular---Alice, from Alice in Wonderland.
A book character who attempted to enter the "real world" through a looking glass---through a mirror.
And if you take a look at this mysterious keyholder's flip-flop...
Tumblr media
IT SAYS ALIC[E].
here me out im not insane here me out
This looks like just a normal brand to me, nothing that has any plot significance. So it's important to ask, why then was it included? Why would Punko include a fictional brand as detailing on a random item of clothing... unless maybe, it was a reference? A jaded, non-diegetic callback to another "Alice" from a different, dropped story...
This leads me to believe that this mystery keyholder was once a storybook character, and has since been greeted into the real world.
I don't know how, but one theory I have is that maybe, to avoid a hassle, Ex Libris may take book characters and turn them real with magic to use as henchmen.
HEAR ME OUT
These people would be untracable; they would have no documents or papers, and nobody from the real world would miss them.
Their memories could be erased or modified so that they do not realize this is their history. They could be amnesic, or remember a false previous life before working for Ex Libris.
They would be easier to control because of this. Ex Libris could manipulate them because they would have qualities that would stop them from fitting into normal life; Ex Libris would feel like the only place they "belonged".
If the keys and their magic exists---and we've seen Violet and Buddy have a spell page---why couldn't this magic be plausible?
Now hear me out even more: Buddy used to be one of them.
I HAVE REASONS.
1. Words n stuff
Tumblr media
Weird that Buddy only has one name, or that it doesn't seem to match the other keys.
That's---an underwhelming first point. Uh. That's all. Food for thought.
OH AND ALSO, "Ex Libris" means "from the library of". Could be referring to people who work with them being LITERALLY from books.
2. Dialogue
Tumblr media
Perhaps this statement is more literal than we thought. Perhaps in Buddy's "home book", he was a villainous character.
Tumblr media
Almost like all three of those phrases apply to him.
3. THE MIRRORS GUYS THE MIRRORS OH MY GOD
Buddy has been seen with plenty of mirror symbolism. Particularly in Dreams by Night:
Tumblr media
Reflections show story characters, we know this.
But also, when Buddy escapes through the mirror (like Alice through the looking glass, in The Elephant Book)...
Tumblr media
THE GLASS IS CURVED.
But we saw the mirror, the mirror is flat. We know the dreams are supposed to be extremely symbollic...
So what if the mirror is meant to symbolize more of a portal, from one world---a fictional world---to a real one?
...okay thats all i have for now that was kinda underwhelming.
I PROMISE IM NOT INSANE I PROMISE IM MORE COHERENT WHEN IM NOT EXHAUSTED LIKE I AM RIGHT NOW

I HAVE BEEN WAITING WEEKS TO POST THIS
Tumblr media
But punko made us promise not to spoil, so I didn't
I present to you...the keys family portrait!!! More content under the cut <3
Tumblr media
I know ex libris wouldn't have anything like this but it's kind of fun to imagine if they did. Like look at them
Tumblr media
They're sitting on bookmarks
Tumblr media
Back: Ambrose, Bronze, Cerulean, Goldie, Nox, Garnet, Sparaxis
Front: Platinum, Ivy, Silver, Violet, Greywen
(from left to right btw)
My story roles are roughly based on Carl Jung's theory of the 12 story archetypes. I know I'm going to have to redraw this at some point when we meet the rest of the keys bc Punko will do it differently but that's a later me problem
Tumblr media
Of course we have our faves, Goldie, Bronze and Silver. Who are the Hero, helper and heroine respectively
In the archetypes, Hero is self explanatory, but Helper is equivalent to the 'caregiver' role, and the 'Heroine' is just an aspect of the hero. But I think the 'Heroine' role could replace the 'everyman' role. So there's that.
Tumblr media
NOX AND VIOLET EVERYBODY!!!!!
I actually think Nox suits him so well, although I still think of him as Buddy most of the time
The 'villain' and 'villainess' don't really exist in the archetypes, although there is a role called the 'outlaw', which I expect would kind of be an antagonist. But because of what we know of them so far, Nox (Buddy) replaces the 'explorer'. Not that this is very important
Tumblr media
Sorry the picture turned out so big!!! This is Cerulean. I invented him for my fic Darcy Forenski and the Summer She Was a Wizard and he's the mentor key, which is the 'sage' role. They're the same thing. It's why he has a beard :D
Tumblr media
This is Garnet, the ruler key. We've seen an arm of a red key in the episode 'dreams by day', so I just drew the rest of him lol
Tumblr media
This is Sparaxis, the trickster key. In Cinderella boy, there's a 'thief' key that's mentioned, and in the 12 story roles there's a 'jester' key. Because Buddy (Nox) was the black colour I kind of ran out of ideas to make them look more like a thief, so I just made them a trickster with a jester hat.
Also the name sparaxis comes from an orange-coloured flower
Tumblr media
This is Greywen, the creator/inventor key. What role does this allow you to access? Mad scientist. Artists. People that set the plot in motion. (she kind of ended up looking a little bit like prunella. Oops)
Tumblr media
This is Ivy, the magician key. I did not draw her very well. But we also saw her in 'Dreams by day' in Silver's dream, and I thought the wings fit well with the magic idea.
Tumblr media
This is Ambrose, the lover key. I know, I know! Its been said that there is no 'love interest' key, but that doesn't mean there can't be a 'lover' key. I mean, I guess he could be the thief key but that would just make him Hermes
Like, the literal greek god
anyway
Tumblr media
Last, but certainly not least, we have Platinum. The innocent/the shadow.
This role is kind of hard to explain because in the 12 roles theory there's a role called the 'innocent', which is like the doomed innocent. The things that are good in the world. But there are a lot of roles that don't quite fit if you put all 12 keys in a story, and also because the keys are people I don't think she would be this perfect little girl all the time, even though she might look it. That's why I called her the shadow. I think this one is the least likely to be part of canon but it's what made the most sense to me
Tumblr media
Anyway have some extra drawings of cerulean because he's my boy and I love him

Hi this one might end up a fic WE SHALL SEE. I have thoughts abouy these characters from League of Legends and I like them as Stargoth analogs okay under the cut lol
So there's a faction in Runeterra (League of Legends universe) where they hunt and pursue magic and mages to contain and lock them up. They even have this big old magic absorbing sentient colossus.
Anyway, so this guy Sylas (here as Buddy) is a rebel leader against this faction (previously worked for them but fuck cops, basically), trying to set magic free in the region.
He's captured and contained in special magic sapping chained gauntlets attached to the floor for being a traitor.
Lux (here as Chase) is the little sister of a grand hero of the faction and she's kind of like if Elsa was enlisted in the military. So like, taught that having magic is dangerous and monstrous but We'll Teach You To Use It For Good tm.
Right so Sylas breaks out, and takes the chain gauntlets with him, and uses them to steal magic and use it against him opponents (copying abilities etc).
He's like a little rebel anti-hero but crucially, it's like his thing to see other people with magic as allies first, regardless of which side they start on. So he’s got a lot of sweet but desperate (kind of) lines about telling Lux she's fighting for people that hate who she is (which is true).
Anyway, yeah. I'm torn between making it a book they go into or just straight alternate universe Ex Libris is the magic hunt and contain society and give them real actual magic which is maybe fun but will encompass SO MANY characters I'm-- andsome review of LoL lore and convenient rewriting for my own purpose.
We'll see

cb theories/thoughts part 3 ( Is Nox actually forced to work with ex libris?)
After the end of season 1 there are many questions that arise.
Is Ex Libris actually an active organisation?
If it is,is Nox forced to work for them?
I personally believe that Ex Libris is not an active organisation, but even if it is, Nox doesn't seem to be working for them.
If you pay attention, you will notice that Nox always says things like "WE will take the keys back" or " we don't like children playing with what is OURS".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To quote Chase: who's we, indeed?
Tumblr media
Nox tends to use the plural form when talking about getting the keys back, but what's interesting is that he never confirmed or denied that he is an Ex Libris member. He most likely let Chase believe that this is the case. He did something similar in the beach arc, but due to his emotional state, he half confessed that he lets Chase make assumptions and this suggests that he never bothers to correct Chase in general.
Tumblr media
The theory that Nox doesn't work for Ex Libris is further reinforced by Nox's habit of separating himself from others. His way of speaking about humans back in the beach arc gives the impression that he considers other humans to be different from him,and that makes sense after the reveal in the finale.
Tumblr media
However,it is worth mentioning that while Nox does use plural form when talking about retrieving the key, when he refers to Ex Libris he doesn't include himself and uses the name of the order to talk about them.
Tumblr media
This could be for the following reasons :
1)because he separates himself from the organisation
2) He doesn't work for them
3) Ex Libris is not active anymore
Whatever of the above is true,it suggests that Nox wants to retrieve the keys for his own plans and not because he was ordered to. If he is not alone, that means he works with someone that he considers an ally. Most likely he is referring to Violet and possibly other keys. Nox seems to associate himself more with the keys rather than other humans, because we can assume that in his experience people use him for selfish reasons. However, even if Nox doesn't seem to be working for Ex Libris,he still seems to be somewhere against his will. He once mentioned an old man,and we saw a glimpse of someone with a cane in dreams by night.
So Is the old man a member of Ex Libris?
The old man doesn't fit the profile of Ex Libris.
First of all, both Nox and violet are awake, whereas Silver said that ex libris would put keyrings on the keys to keep them asleep most of the time, and rarely let them be in their person form.
Tumblr media
Secondly,if a big evil magical organisation lost its precious magical artifacts that used to be kept hidden very securely,it would take more and bigger measures to retrieve them than just sending a young boy into books. Besides, the old man Nox mentioned doesn't even seem to know that a key is missing. This doesn't sound like the kind of organisation we heard about.
Also,Nox does not seem to be pressured by someone superior as he keeps letting chase and Deacon into books. Actually,if he was sent by someone,he would have to present results and information, and the lack of those would cause him to get more aggressive and impatient due to the pressure and stress, but the opposite happens. The more the time passes,he becomes less threatening and appears less malicious, which further suggests that Nox is entering the books to serve his own motivations/intentions and not someone else's.
The old man is not aware of Nox entering the books because Nox mentioned that he shouldn't know something (silver and the ripped page) is missing. Why is it that the old man doesn't know there's something missing? could it be that he is out of town for the time being, allowing Nox and Violet to have some freedom as they are not strictly supervised. This would explain why Nox didn't seem to have trouble hiding the bag with snacks Chase gave him and slept comfortably in Chase's hoodie. Alternatively, the old man gives Nox and Violet a small space for themselves as a psychological tactic to keep Nox compliant and create an illusion of freedom, but that tactic backfired, since Nox takes the risk to make plans.
I would like to take the chance and talk about this official art of Nox. He seems quite lonely,as if he is waiting for someone that is not coming or thinking about a person that is not part of his life anymore. This art makes me get lost in thought, creating scenarios about Nox and Ex Libris that I would like to share (because I am a yapper).
Tumblr media
Nox has admitted that he knows plenty about the keys and it is natural since he is a key of some sort himself, but what if his knowledge comes from somewhere else? Since magic exists in their universe it raises other questions. Do people with magical powers exist? Was Ex Libris consisted of wizards (at least the higher members)? How did they even create the keys? What if there are records of magic and ex libris?
If magic exists but its presence was forgotten or its use faded over the years, there could be people who heard or read about it in books, believed in it,and tried to find evidence of its existence. Perhaps it was a group of individuals, and one of them was connected to Nox — Maybe as a relative or mentor. However, after discovering the records of Ex Libris, a conflict might have arisen about how to use their discoveries, leading to a betrayal.
The official art of Nox, along with his now famous quote "I have never been the hero to any story. Not even my own", suggest that Nox found himself in a situation where he was powerless to save someone close to him —someone who might have been betrayed by the old man. This sense of failure is likely why Nox doesn't see himself as a hero. Not only because he was unable to save someone dear to him, but he also needs saving himself.
Tumblr media
This would explain Nox's wary attitude toward humans. Greed led to betrayal that deeply impacted both him and someone he cared about. It would also explain his strong reaction to Chase's words back in the beach arc("And if they make you miserable you deserve it"). Nox could be feeling responsible for how things ended up and is carrying a strong guilt. The old man might be making Nox feel as if he deserves to be in the situation that he is in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If the old man is someone Nox knows,or a friend of someone that Nox used to know, there might be a compromise or agreement between them. Perhaps Nox has been promised his eventual freedom once the old man achieves his goal, but Nox knows it is a lie.
As for the keys found in Sugar springs, this seems far from coincidental. Sugar springs may have once been a center of magic, it's history buried over time —or deliberately erased. It's possible that Ex Libris faded away because someone worked to put an end to their schemes by making a wish and scattering the keys. The people now in possession of the keys could be former members of ex libris or descendants of them and have no memory or knowledge of their involvement. To them, the keys may appear to be nothing more than antiques, like the guy at the flea market.
Tumblr media
I think Chase and Deacon need to go back to the local library and do some digging on the history of their city.
if you read all this, thank you for your time! I would love to know what you think❤️

Cinderella Boy Theories
Alrighty so after my whole reread I browsed through a bunch of Cinderella Boy theories and would now like to discuss/add my own.
Some spoilers (but not many)
A wish turns you into a key theory - Highly unlikely I think, since apparently the higher ups consumed wishes like candy, and I highly doubt they’d deign to be keys. Alternatively, and I know this is a bit of a limb, but I believe whatever the key changing process is, it has something to do with Buddy’s hate for getting wet.
Ex Libris is dead theory- Entirely possible. Since Buddy is a key we actually have no idea or time frame for when the keys escaped Ex Libris, but it could’ve been anywhere from eons to last year. Either way, not sure how long the magical key organization would last without said magical keys. That said, it is highly likely that they were originally based in Sugar Springs, or at the very least have remnants there based on the missing keys flyer that was put up.
Nox and Violet’s Wish theory - Basically impossible that they’re collecting narratonin. They can’t. They’re keys. This is proven when Buddy pops out of the story and no narratonin pops up. In fact, I believe the reason Silver was out in the library at all was because they needed narratonin to fix her, but they couldn’t collect it on their own.
Missing Keys Flyer Theory (this one’s mine) - Okay so it’s been a long while since we saw Buddy and Chase’s first meeting, but if you can remember that far back you might notice that Buddy was looking for someone else when he found Chase. Someone allegedly taller. Not that it’s hard. Anyway, they expected this other person to take Silver (for aforementioned reasons) and were already prepared to track her down afterwards. This person is likely the new man we saw in the recent chapter, and possibly a remnant of Ex Libris. Judging by the sandals, it’s definitely a person and not a key, but I haven’t quite figured out who yet.
The other keys theory (also mine) - Mostly a crack theory, very unlikely to be true, but what if one (or more) of the keys was part of that band Chase obsesses over. Sorry it’s just at this point they’ve been brought up too consistently to not be important to the plot in some ways. Alternate theory- Alastair made a wish with the keys for fame somehow.
Also Silver might be plotting something idk

Head canons for CB
Damn I JUST saw this and I have no idea how old it is sorry @lapileaf T-T
ANYWAY MY CINDERELLA BOY HEAD CANONS!
Chase: Chase is the type of person who is definitely comes off an air head, but when he wants info, ooooh can he can ALL of the deets. Because people view him as an airhead he uses this to his advantage. He’ll play dumb and ask subtle questions. He gets along with most people so he’s going around and hearing ALL sides of the drama. He knows why Josh and Becky broke things off, he knows Barbra is secretly cheating in bio class, he knows that Jesse and Claire have been skipping classes the past seven weeks. He is very intuitive and socially adept, so he is able to pick up on even the most subtle things. I think more often than not he doesn’t care enough to cause a scene or pry more than necessary lmao.
Deacon: I’m so gonna get killed for this, but Deacon has ZERO dating experience. This man hasn’t been kissed, hasn’t held hands, hell he’s never been on a date. Despite the fact he’s totally a dork who gets so anxious he can’t say anything other than “I…um…I..I” while blushing like a red hot tomato when talking to a girl a lot of it also has to do with his mom who is a complete control freak and never let him date anyone. Ever. Cause “your studies come first. So in all of Deacon’s twenty years of life he’s never been able to have any sort of swoon worthy, romantic encounter. Sorry Deacon, maybe next time…
Buddy: Despite the in-depth character analysis I have for Buddy in my head that I will have to share another time, I definitely think Buddy is 1000% that guy. I know there are loads of different theories as to how Buddy knows the entirety of the plot of every book they enter but my crack headcanon is Buddy is just that guy. Everyone knows that one person who somehow always guesses the plot twist, always knows who the murderer is, always knows who is going to die, is able to predict the entire plot within the first three pages. Buddy isn’t using any kind of dark Ex-Libris magic he has been doing this for so long and he’s so intuitive that he already knows what the plot is. No fancy notes, no magic, no key telling him what’s about to happen. None of that. He does the books based on pure intuition and previous experience.
I can totally do more if you want, but this is all I have for now 💕

Any of you seen 'Sophia The First? Cuz I like to imagine the ex libris library is like the magic library in that show. It has all the books ever and they just sorta float down to a podium and glow when chase enters a book. And thats how buddy follows him every book. Not sure why it would only work for silvers key tho, unless violet and silver have some magical bond or something 🤔😂😂

Okay really random but I had a Cinderella boy dream again…
(also I’m making another animatic but it will take forever. 12 frames per sec and it’s 3 minutes long)
So me and Buddy were in Ex Libris together and we were trying to escape and as we were in the grand library finding the keys to take with us. Some old guy a sorcerer of Ex Libris or something turns Buddy into a cat although Buddy’s older sister, Monica (Not a real character) was able to defeat the Sorcerer and turned him into a cricket. Then Monica told me and cat Buddy that we had 30 minutes to leave Ex Libris before she notified the chairman that the keys were gone. Monica also told us that Buddy would turn back into a human in 24 hours. So I ended up grabbing the bag full of keys and running while cat Buddy limped behind (his leg was injured before he got turned into a cat). And I couldn’t carry him because I had the keys and a few books I stole from Ex Libris about enchantments, and magic.
As cat Buddy and I were getting closer to the exit I ran into Deacon and ended up dropping the bag of keys and books. I pick them up and realize Deacon was there. Apparently he and Chase were able to find Ex Libris from a note Buddy left from the previous story they went into. Deacon asks if I’m okay and where Buddy is at. I tell him that Buddy is the cat and he explains that Chase is in the car picks up Buddy since my hands were full (for whatever reasons) and we all end up leaving.
In the car Chase and Deacon end up swapping places so Deacon can drive and Chase can hold Buddy and off we go to Ralph’s house.
I kinda want to write a fan fic explaining this dream better but would it be weird if I wrote myself into a fan fic? If so I can always replace myself with a new character or just seap myself out for Teddy.

Y'all-
I have a theory that the old man Buddy was talking about in Episode 3 (I think), and also the person chasing him in Dreams by Night, is literally old by thousands of years. Like a founder of Ex Libris when it was relatively new who used magic to keep himself alive, but through the centuries has continued to age so that he's basically an animated mummy. Making him less and less human, which would explain why the pursuer in Buddy's dream's voice was all creepy and monster-like...
Although if someone has done enough bad things to you, you'll probably perceive them as a monster especially in the subconscious regardless of how human they actually are. But I just found it interesting that the text bubbles were written all creepily in the dream, like the speaker isn't entirely human, at least not anymore.

I've also sorta thought about what Buddy is to Ex Libris.
Like, I've been thinking, what if Buddy is a sort of test subject that they were experimenting new kinds of magics on? Like giving him the power to go into any book that another key holder has already entered? (Silver told Chase that "that should not be possible", but also that none of the keys didn't really know what kinds of magic Ex Libris were capable of using) That would explain the number on his back in the dream episode, like they've numbered all their test subjects/slaves.
And, clearly, they don't treat their test subjects too well. (Not feeding them, ragged clothes, kept in chains? {Buddy's dream outfit seemed to have a broken chain cuff around his neck} making them sleep on the floor? {In one of the Beach Boys episodes, Chase thought how Buddy was "able to sleep so well on sand" and I imagine if he's already used to sleeping on the floor, sand would probably be some sort of upgrade? Since it's a bit softer? Idk-})
Tumblr media
AND/OR
Buddy is part of the lower part of Ex Libris, so they're basically using him as a tool to do their bidding, like gathering narratonin or doing tasks like getting the keys back. Just like how they treat the keys as tools.
Edit: Also, in the 'Dreams By Day' episode, in Silver's dream, Violet asks Silver; "Where did they take him?" What if this "him" she's referring to is actually Buddy? But that would mean he'd be really old right? Since it was an old memory? Well, it could be that Ex Libris came up with some sort of magic to extend a persons life somehow, but idk-
And his eyes do look different from all the other characters, since others have like a black "shadow" over them, but Buddy doesn't have that, they're just a pure pale blue.
(I do also have this small weird theory that Buddy could, maybe, actually be one of the keys, but was turned into a human, because of some experiment Ex Libris did, but I really don't have a lot to back that up besides maybe the points I already made 😅)
And I do also have a loose theory that Buddy might be the "Cane man's" son, because in episode 3 Buddy said "-before the old man finds out something is missing" and (assuming the old man he was referring to is the same one in Buddy's dream) sometimes the term "old man" can be used to refer to ones own father, but it could also just be that he used that term because the guy is old, I have no idea. I'm not too confident about this one, but it is something to consider I guess.
(Also, if I happened to say something someone has already previously theorized about, I'm sorry. I haven't read that many theories about Cinderella Boy yet, so I wouldn't know. 🥲)

Magical apps: pop culture witchcraft edition
Ok so I have seen a lot of people in the tech witch community making posts about different apps that they use for this or that. However, I feel it’s time to embrace the fantastical and show people what pop culture witches can do.
Categories of pop culture and art magic I use
- Libriomancy: Magic ex libris term for summoning powers and items and creatures out of books. This type of magic is one of my favorites. The folder on my phone that is labeled with this has all my reading apps.
- Scribomancy: A term I came up with to define the use of writing based magic. Links to libriomancy but in a more artistic way.
- Audiomancy: music based magic, magical playlists and shufflemancy divination.
- Photomancy: since I couldn’t find a better term for photographic magic, all my camera apps and photo editing software is in this folder.
-Ludomancy: Game magic, everything from video games to tabletop RPG apps like dice rollers is in this folder.
- Videomancy: All the magic of watching tv and videos in one folder.
Apps that I use:
I’m gonna post these as photos since I’m not feeling capable of writing them all down.

What do you think of this? Do you have anything you use for pop culture magic?
