Detectives have arrested a fifth man in the case of a missing student nurse.

Owami Davies, 24, who was studying at King's College London, was recorded on CCTV in the company of a man on 7 July - the day she was last seen.

Four men previously arrested in connection with the disappearance have been bailed until September.

The fifth suspect is aged 27 and being held on suspicion of kidnap. Two of the earlier four were arrested on suspicion of murder.

The CCTV footage showed Ms Davies on Derby Road, west Croydon, in the early hours of 7 July.

The Metropolitan Police said on Sunday a "second, unconfirmed sighting" of Ms Davies on 7 July had been reported. She was said to have been seen on nearby Clarendon Road at about 07:00 BST - later than the CCTV footage, which was shot shortly after midnight.

Det Ch Insp Nigel Penney from the Met described the ongoing investigation as complex and said it involved a significant number of officers.

He added: "We are working tirelessly to follow every line of inquiry, including extensive CCTV trawls, as we continue to search for Owami.

"We are now a month on from the last confirmed sighting of her. I cannot imagine what that time has been like for her family.

"We continue to provide them with whatever support we can."

Ms Davies was originally reported as missing by Essex Police - on 11 July.

The force said she had left the family home in Chafford Hundred, Grays, on 4 July.

CCTV then showed Ms Davies in west Croydon in the early hours of 7 July walking along Derby Road. It is the last confirmed sighting.

She was wearing a black jumper, grey jogging bottoms and a grey cap.

A spokeswoman for King's College London said Ms Davies was a valued member of the university's community.

She said: "We are deeply concerned about her disappearance, and we continue to hope for her swift and safe return.

"We are keeping Owami, her family, and her friends in our thoughts during this difficult time.

"Our immediate priority is cooperating with the Metropolitan Police in their investigation."

The Met said two men, aged 27 and 23, who were detained on suspicion of murder, had been bailed until September.

A 32-year-old man and a 22-year-old man who were arrested on suspicion of kidnap have also been released on bail until next month.

Police released CCTV of Ms Davies' last known movements on Wednesday.

Officers are keen to speak to the driver of a white van that was parked on Derby Road.

Police said Ms Davies, and the man she was with, crossed the street "just as the van pulled out".

 It is 2019, my mother, aged 56, sits in a flat she never leaves in a town we never chose to live in having been moved there by the police to escape a violent ex of my mother’s. This ex was housed half a mile away from us after being released from prison for repeatedly assaulting my mum and pulling a knife on the arresting officer. My mum was released from a psych ward with him despite the fact they both had a history of domestic violence. In this case, he, the abuser and she the victim. We had a panic button installed in our flat for a few months, my mum drinking heavily, reliving the same trauma we went through when I was born and had to outrun my violent father some 7 years previous.

Back then we ended up in a women’s refuge in South London, I was 2 years old and count our escape as my earliest memory, up front in a transit van with a Hells Angel called Chub who had turned on my father to help us get out. My father had done time for his part in a gangland shooting and was, by all accounts, a violent and cowardly man. He had come by the hospital after I was born and tried to take me but the midwives managed to change the name on my wristband to hide me amongst the other new-borns.

My mum and her brother had been born 13 months apart and, along with their older sister, had grown up in the army travelling from place to place with my grandma and grandad. My grandma was of Romani stock, selling heather from door to door with her grandmother when she was a kid and was a strong and stoic woman. My grandad died of a heart attack aged 49 whilst working shifts at the local Nestle factory, plummeting the family into more poverty and grief. He had been an alcoholic gambler and left the family with not a penny to their name.  All 3 kids suffered sexual abuse at the hands of more than one culprit. They ended up on a council estate on the greenbelt just south of Croydon. I lived on the same estate for a while, riding the neighbours Great Dane, pretending to have pierced my ear with a metal hoop clasped around my earlobe so I fit in with the local kids.

My uncle was, in hindsight, on the autistic spectrum. He had been a chronic yet functioning alcoholic since his teens, working as a groundsman at a local private school, setting alarm clocks to wake him for a bottle of wine every hour, stashing vodka in the hedges on his way to work and then finishing in the local pub for 15 pints of Guinness and a shot from every optic. He was a chronic self-harmer but luckily ended up going to rehab for a year in 1999 before completing an access course at college. He was offered a scholarship at Oxford University after a tutor at college recommended he apply. The pride we felt when his success story made The Times newspaper. He’d turned it around in a big way and against the odds.

As soon as he got his degree he came straight to our aid. I was 13 at the time, suffering for the weight of the responsibility of my mother’s care, missing school to stay home and look after her and generally misbehaving the way any child would, given the start I’d had in life. My uncle was my hero, introducing me to literature and music and taking me to gigs on a regular basis. For 9 years we got by a little better, a positive male role model in my life for the first time.  My mother’s health deteriorated rapidly both physically and mentally, but I was able to flee the nest without worrying she’d be alone.

I left home aged 18, travelling to Brighton to stay on a mate’s floor. I’d recently been arrested for bottling a dealer at a party in Manchester. The local police had cautioned me because of my evident remorse, and, in hindsight, the colour of my skin.  A lucky break. This was enough to push me to get out of the north a while. I stayed in Brighton for a year, did a few months in Edinburgh with a girl I’d met before we broke up and I jibbed off to London to squat with 200 others in a block of 94 flats near Limehouse. (A part of my life best left for another piece of writing). I travelled a bit further after escaping London under much the same cloud as had made me leave the north, staying in a commune in the south of Spain, squatting in Basque country and generally drinking, stealing and fighting my way around Europe via free trains, hitchhiking and busking. I returned from one trip just after my 22nd birthday. A few weeks later my uncle was found dead on the sofa aged 47 by my mother, our whole world was torn apart.

 In a cruel twist of fate his death came at the same time as massive cuts were delivered to our local mental health services. Not only had we lost our rock, but all professional support was withdrawn, including my mothers CPN whom she had been working with for over 10 years. I was 22 at the time and already 8 years into a life of petty crime, violence, undiagnosed mental health problems and alcoholism. In the aftermath of this shock I tried to take my life 3 times but failed. I was repeatedly denied any form of psychiatric help. I drank and tried hard to balance caring for mother with dealing with my own grief. I met my ex who had an 18-month-old daughter and moved in with her whilst my mum was moved into a small flat after deciding she couldn’t stay in the house she’d found her brother dead in. There were times my mum accused me of killing him, times when she seemed to be having an exorcism, cowering in the corner screaming for hours, not knowing who I was. It was fucking horrible for us both.

As I write this my mum is most likely sleeping, forever coshed by a heady mixture of prescribed drugs that have the fleeting medical professionals on emergency hospital visits visibly shocked, unable to fathom why and or how on earth she has been over-prescribed so much medication at such an alarming rate. She has been prescribed so much morphine her bowel has paralyzed, which means she often runs the risk of vomiting her own faeces, yet the NHS refuses to provide her colonic irrigation and she can’t afford nor physically make it to private clinicians. This coupled with a constant stream of sedatives including Valium prescribed to her daily for over 15 years means she is disabled by the medication alone, any medical professional will tell you that this is a dangerous mix, not to mention the mass load of anti-psychotics that keep her from feeling anything but absolute disorientation and confusion. At present she takes over 100 pills a week. My mother has been a victim to a failed system all her life. Enforced ECT aged 15 to treat her grieving for her father, a life of violence, domestic abuse, poverty, illness and addiction that I in turn inherited.

With her care package cut from 66 hours a week to just 0, we are in the shit. A no DSS policy means we cannot move to be closer to her nor can we move her to be closer to us. The family unit broken down, services cut, we are on our own fighting a battle that we know will only be over for us if by some miracle I make enough money to put her into private healthcare, or if we somehow meet a generously rich benefactor who cares enough to offer some financial support. With the conservatives in power I hold little hope that the services and support we so desperately need will return any time soon, much less that they will return with progressive treatments at the forefront of their initiatives instead of yet more medication.

Just like my mother and uncle before me I am a recovering alcoholic diagnosed with a plethora of enduring mental health problems. My experience with my mum has led me to eschew all medication in my battle, a tough call but one I am prepared to attempt in the name of avoiding a pharmaceutical addiction that I stand less chance of receiving support for than my alcohol and drug addictions. Just 3 weeks ago I was convinced that taking my own life was the only way out of this situation, I wrote my note but luckily found enough strength to share my feelings with my partner who pushed me to ring for help. My partner has been the only person to help us out. Juggling my ongoing problems with those of my mother. She is our lifeline and I worry for her own mental health and the effects such massive responsibilities will undoubtedly have on her.

I am lucky in that I am a highly creative individual. I was actively excluded from learning any instruments at school and have never been able to get on with the education system enough to make it through college or university, but I continue to make music and art as part of a loose collective of artists and have found moderate success in acting, writing and documenting my experiences through creativity. Without these vessels of communication, I fear I would crumble under the weight of it all. I am engaged in alcohol services after experiencing seizures due to my dependant drinking and am currently 21 months sober. I also await further therapy on the NHS, but with waiting times of up to 2 years I have had to forge my own path of self help which includes, amongst other things, cold water immersion, art therapy and basking in the comfort of nature and wildlife.

My mother is awaiting a place at an over 55’s residential home. I wish more than anything I could provide a few more years of something resembling independence for her, but know deep down the best thing for her is 24-hour support in a place where she gets to see more than just mine and my partners faces. I continue to communicate our experiences with anyone who will listen and thank my lucky stars I was raised with love and books and am able to sit here and voice these things rather than join the mass of people suffering in silence at the hands of a system not fit for human purpose. People are dying on our streets, the social cleansing of the most vulnerable people in our society continues and all to prop up the lifestyles of an inherently psychopathic elite who continue to grow richer with blood on their hands. I thank my friends, my partner, her family and my mother and uncle and their mother before them. They all show me love and that, I am convinced, is what has kept me alive and out of prison to this day.

Student nurse Owami Davies vanished without much of a trace more than 45 days ago. She was last seen in south London, 30 miles from her family home in Essex. Despite extensive appeals by three police forces and the arrests of five people, the lead detective has admitted they are "playing catch up" and are working through over 100 potential sightings of Owami.

Over the summer Owami Davies was nearing the end of her studies at King's College London. The 24-year-old had secured a job after working as an A&E nurse during the Covid-19 pandemic. Known to her friends as Tiomi, she had an interest in doing research on diseases.

But for nearly six weeks Owami has not contacted her friends or family, or turned up to work. Now the Metropolitan Police have drafted in extra support from the National Crime Agency as the search continues.

On 4 July Owami Davies left her home in Chafford Hundred in Grays, Essex. Her family reported her missing to Essex Police two days later. A week later, on 11 July, Essex Police made the first public appeal, saying Owami's friends and family were "extremely concerned".

In a post on Essex Police's Facebook page, the force described her as a "black woman with her hair in two corn rows" adding "she was last seen wearing a black jumper, grey jogging bottoms and a grey cap". They said Owami had connections to Thurrock and urged the public to contact them as a "matter of urgency".

Five days after the first appeal, Essex Police issued an update - Owami had last been seen in Croydon on 6 July. On the afternoon of 31 July the Met issued their first public appeal, with more details on Owami's last known whereabouts. Their dedicated Missing Persons Unit said Owami was last seen on 7 July at 00:03 BST on Derby Road in south London - near to West Croydon rail station.

Det Con Marie Spear urged people in the West Croydon area to check their sheds and outbuildings. "Owami's family have not heard from her for more than three weeks and she has not turned up to work," she added. Police were treating the disappearance as a "missing person investigation".

"Owami was in a vulnerable state when she was last seen and we need the public's help in piecing together her movements on the night she went missing."

Five arrests

As it approached a month since Owami's disappearance, the Met handed the investigation to their specialist crime command, citing its resources and expertise.

On 2 August two men, aged 23 and 27, were arrested in Croydon on suspicion of murder. A property on Derby Road was cordoned off and a forensics tent was erected at the side of the home.

The following day - 3 August - police released CCTV showing Owami in the company of a man on the night she was last seen alive. Footage showed Owami crossing Derby Road just after midnight on 7 July. Detectives appealed for the driver of a white van which was seen parked on the road and driving off as Owami, and the man she was with, crossed the road. A third man, aged 32, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

On the same day Owami's distraught mother, Nicol Davies, called on anyone who had information about where her missing daughter could be, to come forward.

Making a public appeal at New Scotland Yard, the 46-year-old said: "There are many friends and family who love and care for Owami and all of them want to see her safe return. Every day we hope to hear the news that Owami is coming back to us; your help might make it so."

Fresh CCTV images of Owami inside a shop in West Croydon on the night she vanished were issued. They showed her wearing a white T-shirt, a navy hoodie and a handbag over her right shoulder.

On 4 August police arrested a 22-year-old man at an address in Croydon also on suspicion of murder.

Warrants for extra time to question the other three men previously arrested were obtained by detectives.

A fifth man was arrested on 6 August.

The Met then clarified the status of all the arrests as all five were released on bail until September pending further investigations:

Last sighting

On 9 August the Met said a second unconfirmed sighting of Owami had been reported to them. Detectives said this sighting was at about 07:00 BST on Clarendon Road - around one minute's walk from Derby Road. The next day - 10 August - police released new CCTV footage of Owami, walking north along London Road in Croydon on 7 July at about 13:20. Police said she had been heading away from West Croydon.

Det Ch Insp Penney, who is now leading the investigation, said the CCTV showed Owami wearing a "distinctive red top and heading towards the Norbury area". She asked people who had been in the area to "think back and call us if they remember seeing Owami".

"Please do not underestimate how important your call could be."

Six days after the new CCTV was released, the Met said on 16 August that it was possible Owami was in the Croydon area and "in need of help". They said they had retrieved 50,000 hours of footage and thus far viewed about 10,000 hours.

Det Ch Insp Penney explained the complexity of CCTV enquiries.

"Every time a person reaches a junction it can mean that several new roads have to be examined to see which way Owami went. Hours could therefore be saved if a member of the public could give a positive sighting in a particular road."

On 18 August the British Transport Police (BTP) issued its first appeal on Twitter saying Owami may well still be taking trains. In the tweet, BTP said Owami "regularly uses the rail and Tube network to travel from Grays to the Croydon area". She often used West Ham and West Croydon stations, BTP said.

The Met said it had brought in support from the National Crime Agency.

Despite the numerous police appeals and reported potential sightings of Owami, police insist the case remains a missing persons investigation.

Briefing journalists on 22 August, Det Ch Insp Penney said Owami had no money on her Oyster card and no access to her phone or bank cards. He revealed investigators had trawled through 117 reported sightings of Owami, who he said had experienced periods of depression in the past for which she needed medical treatment, and had also used alcohol to deal with the condition.

Officers said Owami has used different names, though these were not revealed.

"There is no evidence that she's come to harm," Det Ch Insp Penney said. "We're still hopeful that we'll find her alive and well."

Wrong image

Plenty of questions remain for the police forces who have handled Owami Davies' case since she was reported missing.

When Owami was first reported missing, Essex Police carried out the investigation. The force said detectives tried to locate Owami through financial, phone and address checks as well as speaking to friends, family and local hospitals.

As a result of its first public appeal it was established that Owami had last been seen in London, specifically Croydon.

"At this point we liaised with the Met Police and continue to do so," an Essex Police spokesman explained. The investigation was formally transferred to the Met on 23 July.

Essex Police explained that when someone is reported missing, an assessment is carried out to identify the risk of that person coming to harm and how vulnerable they are to being exploited.

They added there was a "significant amount of investigative work into locating Owami" before the decision to issue a public appeal.

"If we are able to locate someone without exposing them to that level of public scrutiny then we try and do so. However, this is also balanced with the identified immediate risk to that person's welfare."

Then as the Met Police took control of the investigation, detectives initially issued the wrong pictures of Owami.

On 3 August, the Met issued CCTV images from a shop in Croydon of a woman they said was Owami.

The pictures were picked up by a national, regional and local media outlets who reported them as part of broadcast and online coverage.

Hours later the force apologised and withdrew the images, saying they were not of Owami, but of another woman.

On 21 August the police watchdog confirmed it had received a referral from the Met Police after it emerged officers had spoken to Owami on 6 July - the day she was reported missing.

Officers were called to an address on Clarendon Road, in Croydon, over concerns about the welfare of a woman.

Police attended and called the London Ambulance Service, but the woman told them she did not want help and left.

Owami had not yet been marked as a missing person on the police database at the time.

The force said it only later established the woman they had spoken to was Owami as a result of their missing person investigation.
