This embroidery recreates the first published image of the Mandelbrot set from 1978, using thread to capture its striking symmetry and spiky outline. The Mandelbrot set is a famous fractal formed by repeatedly applying an iterative equation to the complex numbers. Each complex number can be represented as a point on a 2D plane. If the results of the iterative equation starting at a specific point stay bounded, the point is in the Mandelbrot set. Points outside the set are generally coloured based on how fast they escape, forming the fiery fringes around the edge.

Just some mandlebrot set renderings I made a while back. Remebered they exist and thought "oh hey! I could post that.".

Continuing on with Ancient Greek inspired Pokemon fanart (GrecoMon?), here is a line based on porygon I’m calling pythagoron! Their evolutionary line is built on higher dimensions, with the first stage being a 2D diagram of shapes composed of straight lines written on papyrus (excluding its circular eye), and the second stage being built entirely from three dimensional shapes with curved surfaces excluding its 2D circular eye. The third stage is based on a 4D object called a Klein bottle as the head, with a fractal inspired by the Mandelbrot set as the body!

i made a new (?) fractal today!
i call it the burning duck :3
Tumblr media
v [explanation below!] v
i have no idea if anyone else has seen this before (someone probably has), but i think it's really cool!
this is somewhat of a halfway point between the mandelbrot set and the burning ship. the original burning ship fractal is the result of taking the mandelbrot set's equation ( z = z^2 + c; where z and c are complex numbers ), but using the absolute value of z instead ( z = |z|^2 + c ).
the result is this, a very pretty fractal that is quite well known:

while experimenting with my own fractal renderer i've been working on, i realized that i didn't have to absolutize the entirety of z. because it's a complex number, the real and imaginary portions are stored in separate variables, so i tried to see what happens if you only do one of them!
absolutizing the real half was very boring, it just mirrored the bottom half of the burning ship to the top. but the imaginary half created the duck!
visually, i think this is probably my favorite fractal! i am very surprised how unique it is to the burning ship despite being so closely related. here's a couple really pretty screenshots i took:

anyways thanks for reading this!!

I think that one of the main reasons why I like Genshin lore so much is that it’s basically a Mandelbrot set. At first glance, a lot of it is Nothing™ but all you have to do is zoom in a little bit and see colors and patterns beyond comprehension. You can get lost in the beautiful patterns, and if you zoom in far enough everything repeats itself. It’s so wonderful and fascinating and complex and sososososososo interesting but I think the problem is that most people are just trying to zoom into the middle where there’s nothing but Void™, or trying to view the set by just taking a screenshot and zooming in. Of course you’re not going to be impressed, you have to actually move your cursor around or zoom out to see how close you are to the edge.
