2/19/25.
Thanks to Bandcamp user Mawkish Twaddler for buying this. I can't overemphasize how much I follow what other Bandcamp users buy.
Menow are a Nagoya, Japan two person band who describe themselves as slowcore/acid folk. I'm particularly drawn to the synth work and melodies. This is a cassette release on Japanese label Galaxy Train. I was surprised to see that this is the first post mentioning this label. Galaxy Train have also released work from Tony Jay, The Memories and Christmas Snow Story (ex-Camera Obscura). I've been thoroughly enjoying the Apartment Star 7" from 2000. Galaxy Train appears to have been around since the late 1990s.
I've been spending this morning listening to many different sounds from the label. So great to uncover a gem like Galaxy Train on Bandcamp. Feels like I've struck a bountiful indie pop vein.
Back to Menow. Their sound recalls bands like Maple Fyshh, Hallelujahs and Nagisi Di Te.

to my delight, this was shared online within a compilation mix through fill in the blanks along with another track from dokitto!! station, lifting reveries of summertime simplicity to whistling gale.

Holy cow. Where has this band been? Nag Ar Juna are (were) a Japanese oddball/jangle/pop band. This was released in 2013 by the Tokyo label de.te.ri.o.ra.tion. The label's last release was 2019.
Nag Ar Juna move between pop sounds reminiscent of early Pastels, Bronze Float (listen to that guitar), The Clean or The Velvet Underground (some of these songs have that Mo Tucker chug). There are several releases on the label from this band. Really, take some time to go through them all. I've been listening most to "How Many Friends Can Die Happily?", but "doqu" has more vocal interplay (male and female). There's a definite Georgia Hubley vibe on the 2nd song, "Sasage".
Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention Maple Fyshh. Nag Ar Juna must have listened to them while growing up. But, I hope it always goes without saying...Nag Ar Juna have crafted a sound all their own. Fantastic.

I always read Bandcamp's "Essential Releases" that comes out each Friday. I can bank on one of Mariana Timony's suggestions hitting the spot. I also like J. Edward Keyes' recommendations. This week it was Zoe Camp who highlighted the release of a compilation of work from Maple Fyshh (Miyazaki, Japan).
Camp states, "You Are Leaving My Mind" effectively bridg[es] the maximalist, Spector-helmed pop of the ’60s with the gauzy, moody mores of the New Romantics, even dashes of surf rock and acid folk. To put it in comparative, latter-day indie terms, Maple Fyshh beat Beach House to the punch by roughly two decades, and then went even further. Don’t miss this priceless eureka moment."
I can't help but think of a great combination of Woven In and Bailey's Nervous Kats. This is released by Japanese label EM Records.
