Utik
The utik (yoo-tik) are a sophont species the rakii came in contact with when they first landed on Ra'hah, their second largest moon orbiting Rek. The utik were actually the first to even set foot onto it, as they had no other choice. After suffering massive damage to their ship, the utik were forced to land on the lunar surface and hope to survive or await help. Years later, the rakii show up, which started an a long, chaotic process of attempt of communication and debating ownership.
The bodies of the utik are actually not their true bodies. The actual sophont lies within the pearly cased cockpit. Utik like the Olac bio-mechs, mastered the technical art of bio-technology, having started on a very hot and humid planet. While unlike the Olac who switched to bio-technology as a means to evade a debilitating disease, the utik mastered it for years, working off various symbiotic organisms. Their mech suits, or cyborg bodies you could say are symbiotic, as after their nervous and circulatory systems are linked, the pilot has full control of the suit, having it feed off waste material from the pilot. The suit then takes the waste, replenishes it, mixes it's own formula into it and feeds it back to the pilot. Like a plant, it gets a lot of energy off light and other forms of UV Retaining it for hours. These suits are suitable (ha) for open space, and lunar terran for a limited time. However proper measures are made to keep the suits tidy from "space dust" so no one goes out "naked" and risk exterior damage.
(quick sketch of utik 'pooters n screens. NOT ENTIRELY FINALIZED)
However, this isn't their true form. At least they didn't start off like this.
Way before, after they reached the ultimate feat in their development, their star was noticeably suffering, as it was predicted to eventually turn into black hole. While they had years 'till then, there wasn't enough time to perfect their original forms for the long-term space travel. So. as best they could, they learned to carefully strip and reduce themselves to nothing more than squishy muscle and brain matter, beforehand creating living space suits and sleeper pods to maintain what's left. Several ships shot into space just in time before their star went dark and each ship jumped in different directions hoping to find and terraform a new world. This group of utik weren't so lucky, as said before.
Now for the first half of the year, rakii and utik were on some tense terms. A lot of internal debates on who gets the moon. While utik were capable of defense, they weren't in a great position to, and the rakii weren't sure how to proceed with their first extraterrestrial contact. (Non-religious turned contact I'd guess???) UNTIL, one day it was brought ahead that, the utik secrete an anti-radiation slime. Something they came with naturally, just cranked to 10.
At first, the rakii thought to use this fluid as an applicable substance similar to sun-block, required to apply pre-spaceflight. However, it was revealed that they are extremely allergic to it. So skin-contact was a big no.
(Unfortunate rakii subject applying utik-based lotion. Results: swelling in skin, which can further cause blisters and splits)
After several trials, they came to a conclusion of using it as a gel layering in space suits, capable of absorbing radiation and protecting the wearer.
This discovery brought up a plan and a deal. It was agreed, rakii and utik would share the moon, making their first ever alliance, in exchange the utik would allow the rakii to harvest this anti-radiation goop off them, of course while exchanging knowledge, and resources.

introducing Bdubs's tea! Art by: @recklessghostsart "Would you like a handful of moss?" That's how I best describe this tea! Like you made moss tea and it somehow tasted good? Its not sweet but not bitter. Very much like you foraged your own tea vibes. Bdubs is a very light Green tea. Hojicha is a Japanese tea, and while only 20% of this blend, you still can pinpoint that in its base form. I highly recommend drinking this sweetened with Honey, and perhaps a side of fruit! Accented with Apricots & Cranberry, this is a Low caffeine Tea! If you wish to give him a try, or read more about the teas included in his blend: https://www.adagio.com/signature_blend/blend.html?blend=225348 The inspo for Bdub's tea comes from his skin! Being the Moss covered sleeper, I wanted his to taste as natural as the way he makes his terraforming look! I personally had never tried Hojicha before this but based on the description I had hoped it would give me what I was looking for and it paid off spectacularly! I of course threw in chamomile as Bdub's is the Sleep Master! As always, if you try him out let me know what you think! (PS: The color of the tea is with it already Mixed with Honey!) ---- And if YOU (or your friends) want to be a volunteer artist- go on and fill out this form! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdFAS-pJHat-GcNfGUuvumLCpPatkj91vT6Kbn8M4g7hDljkw/viewform?usp=sf_link We are doing some places so if you aren't that confidence with Character art, feel free to submit background art! We have Scarland, Decked out and maybe even Joel's S10 base that could get some delicious tea one day! And as always, make suggestions if you want to see anything else. Thank you all!

READ:
“The Dispossessed” by Ursula K. Le Guin: A philosophical sci-fi novel about anarchism, belonging, and utopia—an ideological touchstone for someone torn between duty and idealism. - R
“Giovanni’s Room” by James Baldwin : Tragic, lush, and beautifully written—Baldwin’s exploration of identity, repression, and impossible love would devastate and inspire him.- R
“The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran : A spiritual favorite he returns to in moments of crisis; its lyrical insights echo his own poetic leanings. - R
“Orientalism” by Edward Said : Required reading for a post-colonial lens. He underlines passages with fury and sorrow. - R
“The Left Hand of Darkness” by Ursula K. Le Guin : Gender, politics, and alienation—it resonates with how he often feels like he’s from another world. - R
“Letters to a Young Poet” by Rainer Maria Rilke : Marked up and dog-eared, this is his Bible of the soul. - R
“The Fire Next Time” by James Baldwin : A voice of revolution and love, Baldwin shapes much of Rhaegar’s political consciousness. - R
“The Iliad” by Homer (Fagles Translation) : He finds kinship in tragic, beautiful warriors doomed by fate. - R
“Red Mars” by Kim Stanley Robinson : A story of revolutionary terraforming and idealism breaking down under human flaws. A metaphor for his inner world. - R
The Wretched of the Earth – Frantz Fanon : A necessary fury. Fanon reminds us that healing is violent when the wound is deep, and that to love justice means we must confront blood and empire. - R
Discipline and Punish – Michel Foucault : The panopticon lives in our bones. Read this if you’ve ever wondered why shame feels institutional. - R
Capitalist Realism – Mark Fisher : An exorcism for the creeping sense that nothing can change. Fisher put language to my despair—and my hope. - R
Hope in the Dark – Rebecca Solnit : "Because despair is easy. Solnit writes like a lighthouse: distant, unwavering, always there when the storm rises." - R
The Collected Poems of W. B. Yeats : When I was younger, I read Yeats for love. Now I read him for memory. 'Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams.' I still do. - R
Leaves of Grass – Walt Whitman: The first book that made me want to sing. To be alive, to be flawed, to still be radiant—Whitman taught me that is holy. - R
Love Is a Dog from Hell – Charles Bukowski: Crude, broken, sometimes unbearable. But heartbreak isn’t always elegant, and neither am I. - R
The Master and Margarita – Mikhail Bulgakov : Love, revolution, the Devil. It’s as strange and brilliant as the best of our contradictions. - R
Beloved – Toni Morrison: There are books that make you better. This one remakes you. - R
The Unbearable Lightness of Being – Milan Kundera : An existential ache, dressed in sex and sorrow. I read it when I was too young. I still carry it. - R
CURRENTLY READING :
“The Ministry for the Future” by Kim Stanley Robinson : Reading it for his dissertation on climate justice in speculative fiction—he’s particularly obsessed with the ethics of intergenerational action. - R
“The Wretched of the Earth” by Frantz Fanon : Harsh but necessary. He’s grappling with how radical change happens and the cost of decolonization. - R
“Open Veins of Latin America” by Eduardo Galeano : For a course on imperial legacies. He alternates between being shattered and electrified by it. - R
WANT TO READ :
“How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy” by Jenny Odell : He’s fascinated by critiques of capitalism that are also poetic in tone. - r
“On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous” by Ocean Vuong : He’s heard this book feels like being pierced by stars. He’s saving it for a time when he can fall apart privately. - R
“Pedagogy of the Oppressed” by Paulo Freir : As someone who deeply believes in education as liberation, this is on his near-future reading stack.- R
“The Poetics of Space” by Gaston Bachelard : For late-night intellectual yearning and metaphysical wandering. - R
“Autobiography of Red” by Anne Carson : A mythic, queer, poetic reinterpretation of Herakles and Geryon? Yes, obviously. He’s already bookmarked the first line. - R

~600 word snippet of a WIP sequel to Death and Other Lies which may or may not come out in the near future, depending on how life goes. ily
They pound down the stairs, dodging guns and fists and knives as they go, and Lando catches a stray bullet, grazing across his arm as he pushes Ollie out of the way ‒ less dangerous, and more frustrating, because honestly the guy shooting it was slow as anything, so it’s really actually on Lando that they were in a position to be shot in the first place.
He swears a little under his breath and continues to herd Ollie down to the basement, to the sewerage grate he knows runs right into a complex system of tunnels. It's bolted shut, but Lando just attaches one of what Alex calls his ‘brand new state-of-the-art lockpicking devices’ to the centre of it. “Code?” “18-15-20-20-15-7-15,” Alex replies. “What?” “I said, 18‒” Lando huffs, tapping in the code impatiently. “I know what you said. I want to know why that’s the fucking code.” George snorts into the comm, making a truly disgusting noise. “’Cause Alex is a basic bisexual using a letter-number conversion cipher.” “Oh, die.” The thing beeps in a way which is never good for anyone standing nearby, a little red light blinking, and Lando yanks Ollie backwards by the arm, diving behind a large stone pillar before there’s a huge flash of light and the sound of an explosion. When he peeks back around, the grate is little more than a smouldering hole in the wall. He puts a hand up to his comm again. “Two-Three.” “Yes?” is Alex’s reply. “That’s not a lockpicking device. That’s a bomb.” “It opened the sewer, did it not?” Arthur asks. “My brother is coming, also.” “What?” Charles is meant to be securing the perimeter, not running through the sewers. If Charles is running through the sewers instead of securing the perimeter, Lando is going to fucking kill him. He says as much. Arthur snorts. “Other brother.” “Lorenzo’s on Earth again?” He was on one of Jupiter’s moons, last Lando checked, terraforming. Or, at least, he was telling the government he was terraforming. Lando’s pretty sure he’s money laundering up there. “Other other brother.” Arthur doesn’t have any more brothers. Unless he’s talking about ‒ The rapid pit-pat of four absurdly small legs echoes out from the hole in the wall, followed by a high-pitched, yappy bark, and Lando begins praying to gods long since murdered. Leo Leclerc. “Remind me to murder Charles when we get back,” Lando tells Ollie. “Fricking Charles and his fricking ninja dog.” Ollie tilts his head. “I think he’s cute.” He bends down, scritches Leo behind his big floppy ears, and Leo snuffles up to his hand, tail wagging like a thing that waggles at the speed of sound. “Will you show us the way out, buddy?” he asks in a baby voice, and when Leo yaps in response, he coos. “Good boy. Good doggie, yes, you’ll help us. Good boy.” While Ollie is distracted, Leo’s eyes turn towards the door they came through, where the sounds of guards are becoming ever-closer, ever-louder. His gaze burns with the wrath of a thousand suns. Leo Leclerc is a Dachshund, but he doesn’t let that stop him. His little black tapioca pearl eyes hold a fire last reflected in the eyes of Genghis Khan. He barks at a hundred and thirteen decibels, on last count. He has a distant ancestor who would routinely run away from his master and fight bears. Leo Leclerc spent his first three months of life in a Russian satellite, course set for Mars, and is the scariest, most eldritch, longest little tiny dog that has ever graced the planet. Charles adores him; Alex is in a constant state of war with him; Lando tolerates him, but only because when he said they were not keeping him, Charles pouted and him and asked him why Lando was allowed to keep Franco if Charles couldn’t keep Leo.
Happy new year wahoo

@seifrin replied:
the party's board game preferences?
really funny of you to ask this bc that's actually one of the very first things i posted about when i was just getting into isat fandom!! but it was kind of all over the place and i know the characters better now, so here's a tidy list :3
Siffrin
Siffrin likes games that are casual and easy to pick up, and don't require a ton of strategizing. Their favorite game is Set, which is a card game where you race to be the first to find sets of matching or unmatching cards in a spread.
It's about speed and (flat) observational skills, so he's pretty good at it! He also likes silly party games that are less about winning and more about being funny or working together, like Quiplash or Charades.
Mirabelle
Mirabelle thinks it's fun to get dramatically competitive, and doesn't mind playing for a couple hours straight. Her favorite game is Bunny Kingdom, which is a territory-claiming game, but with cards that provide a lot of different ways to get points.

The artwork is cute, and it's surprisingly easy to learn despite its complexity because many of the cards say what they do. She would have fun foiling other players' plans and seeing the dramatic twists in the final points reveal! She also loves games that are about interpersonal drama, like Shadow Hunters or Mafia, and she's down to try most games because she cares less about the game and more about having a nice time with her friends.
Isabeau
Isabeau likes games that are complicated and highly variable. His favorite game is Dominion, which is a deck-building game with tons of expansions that introduce unique mechanics, so you can mix and match cards to get a different experience each time you play.

Even after he's decided to stop hiding his nerdiness, he's reluctant to actually put his all into winning lest his friends get frustrated, so he's more likely to decide on strategies that seem the most fun rather than the most effective. He also likes games where you have to read/predict your opponent, like Poker or Shadow Hunters, and games that take hours to learn and more hours to play, like Terraforming Mars. (Don't ask me about that game I refuse to learn how to play it.)
Odile
Odile can do complex strategy, but rather than memorizing a bunch of rules she prefers games that are easy to play, hard to master. Her favorite game is Azul, which involves collecting the right amount of the right color tiles to fill up your board in the right order.

It's fairly short and straightforward, but still with plenty of decisions to make as you adapt your strategy depending on what tiles are available. She also likes classic puzzle-y games like Scrabble or Jenga or Mancala. And she complains about Isabeau's long complex games, but when she gets into them she gets really into them, and can give Isabeau a run for his money.
Bonnie
Bonnie likes epic excitement! Their favorite game is Shadow Hunters, where players are secretly assigned the role of Shadow, Hunter, or Neutral, and have to figure out who to attack or defend as they work towards their unique win conditions.

Bonnie's not actually particularly good at it, but the random teams and random dice/cards level the playing field a bit, and even when they lose track of who's on whose team, it's fun to attack random people and it's fun to lose dramatically! They also enjoy card games, like Egyptian War / Slap or Mao, and rambunctious games, like... Egyptian War / Slap or Mao.
Everyone Together!
The whole group loves a good bit, so of course they're on that party game shit: all sorts of Jackbox, Cards Against Humanity with curated/custom cards, that game where one person writes a sentence then the next person draws it and then the next person looks at just the drawing and describes that, etc.
Everyone will play Dominion with Isabeau, but Bonnie and Siffrin will only play if there's not any expansion packs in use (or at least not any weird expansion mechanics). Bonnie likes using attack cards, Siffrin likes building huge eclectic decks, Odile likes building small streamlined decks, Mirabelle likes playing several games in a row with the same set of cards so she can try different strategies, and Isabeau likes using strange cards and unique strategies.
Everyone enjoys Mao (though Odile claims she doesn't). I'm breaking the rules by explaining this to you, but it's a card game played with multiple decks, with a similar structure to Uno except with some bonus rules, plus whenever someone wins a round they get to make up a new rule, and if you break a rule you draw a card. Rules like no asking questions, no playing even cards on even cards, meow every time you play a diamond, etc. Generally Bonnie and Mirabelle make rules that affect behavior rather than gameplay, Odile makes complicated rules that make it harder to play, Siffrin makes simple rules that make it easier to play, and Isabeau makes rules that balance out the mechanics currently in use. Everyone loves making Odile say weird things, and sometimes she pulls out a super ridiculous rule herself. Siffrin is the worst at remembering all the rules, but he doesn't care that much because struggling to remember the rules isn't an obstacle, it's the whole point of the game.
Shadow Hunters has something for everyone, and it's convenient that 5 players is a neat 2 Shadow 2 Hunter 1 Neutral split. Bonnie is more likely to attack at random if they don't know who anyone is, to keep things exciting, and Siffrin is more likely to not attack at all, because they don't want to accidentally hurt an ally. He gets a little stressed out by the drama sometimes, but it helps that he's playing a specific character. Isabeau's the best at the game, except he and Mirabelle both get really into dramatically holding grudges and such, so Odile's practicality and perception make her actually the best at it.
Siffrin likes playing Azul with Odile because it's very visual and straightforward, the two of them could sit there quietly playing five rounds in a row. Odile and Bonnie play Mancala together, and Bonnie Isabeau and Siffrin play Egyptian War. Everyone's willing to play Set with Siffrin; Mirabelle is the next best at it. Isabeau enjoys Bunny Kingdom the most after Mirabelle, but everyone will play it — but Bonnie gets bored halfway through and it's four player anyway, so they'll often team up with Siffrin. Isabeau never gets to play Terraforming Mars because it's one of the only games Mirabelle won't give a second try, and while Odile doesn't hate it she'd rather play a weird Dominion expansion.
#ask meme answers#wow what a coincidence that i assigned siffrin's friends my own personal four favorite board games :3#s.siffrin#s.isabeau#s.mirabelle#s.odile#s.bonnie#party#s.party#rb.isat

Explanation of [A quick change of clothes(kin).] and various things about Yuurmom
Minecraft Single Player! Yuu AU
I don't really have a way of introducing this information in a story format with how little I've written, so I'll explain it out here.
The appearance and gender of Yuurmom has been very vague, and I honestly had not planned on detailing upon it up until recently.
Naturally, Yuurmom does not have a gender. There is no debate upon this one, so why were they described with the appearance of Minecraft Steve? Because Steve is the default skin of all players. Minecraft Steve and Yuurmom are not the same entity in this AU.
Yuurmom has the option to go to worlds where there is multiplayer and has done it before, however has a preference for simply staying solo. They greatly enjoyed the sandbox aspects of Minecraft which include terraforming, farming, building, and various sadistic things that come along with being alone for years and bearing resemblance to being the master of their world.
So needless to say: Yuurmom absolutely does not enjoy abiding by the rules or being told what to do.
Of course, that doesn't mean they're completely heartless and devoid of making connections with people. They're just really bad at it because they've never had a social life.
So let's get into the translation of how they went from mature-looking guy Minecraft Steve to what was described as a more youthful appearance.
As previously established, Minecraft Steve is simply the default skin. Upon initially entering Twisted Wonderland, the code that aids in translating Minecraft -> TWST makes a direct conversion from blocks to a body that resembles a human. With no prior bases to build off of for the conversion, the code used Yuurmom's Minecraft Steve skin as a base for how they will physically appear in TWST.
Of course, there are limitations to how much translating the code can do. I intentionally avoided describing Yuurmom as "adult" because in this AU, they are not an adult. However, since they aren't human, their maturation greatly differs from that of a human. You can think of their aging process similar to that of Malleus’s, the primary difference being that Yuurmom was not born from anything but simply spawned into existence. It’s not currently defined exactly how old Yuurmom is, but when translated into human age, they’re similar to that of a 16-17 year old.
When receiving the NRC uniform, Yuurmom's code translates it into a skin. But wait! This is only clothing, the parts such as shoes, hair, skin (the actual thing), and eyes are not included in this. So the moment where Yuurmom turns into static is where the code begins to align itself with that of Twisted Wonderland's "code" aka set of logic.
With the fact that the uniform is directly derived from Twisted Wonderland and not Minecraft means that the skin created from the uniform will bear more resemblance to "NRC student from Twisted Wonderland" rather than "player from Minecraft".
Having this base allows the code to translate Yuurmom into what they would be as a human as opposed to “Minecraft Steve skin in TWST”.
EDIT: no more art here because i will spend a lot of time mulling over yuurmom's appearance

Species swap with the Radio Isotope and Imperator crews! Inspired by Ryoko Kui's art for Dungeon Meshi of course, it was a great exercise and helped me refine how Armisian and Isshan look and tentatively settle on a base for KseIn designs!
Bonus :

More info on each species under the cut.
Isshan : They were the first to leave their home planet and make contact with the other people of the star cluster, first the Armisians, then the KseIn and finally the humans. Their society is mainly made of nomadic clans, with only a few permanently settled cities on their home planet. Many spationaut legends and superstitions find their origin in Isshan religion, and spationaut common tongue is an evolution of Isshan trading language. The name of the star cluster comes from the name given by the Isshan to the night sky, Laani nab'ataream, the one with a thousand stars.
Human : They arrived in the star cluster long after Isshan and Armisian mastered space travel, in two fleets of old generation ships. The ships' record were corrupted and the only logs recovered were from the end of their journey. With no homeworld in the cluster and their ships falling apart, humans spread across the cluster, and their high adaptability, durability and small stature made them great spaceship and station workers. The older generations decided to stay on the ships they came with, and other set their sight on terraforming a barren planet in the Center, Noutéra. Humans are, with the Isshan, the most represented species across the cluster.
Armisian : They are a telepathic species, communicating mainly through emotions and impressions. On their homeworld, they are part of a network of individuals, surrounded by the experiences, feelings and presence of others, but as they leave the planet, they become separated from this network. Loneliness is extremely painful for Armisians, and prolonged isolation can become dangerous. Some do leave their planet, but never alone. Armisians have a hard time adapting to the other species technology and communication style, as words are not used to convey important information in their culture : the real conversation is made through thought.
KseIn : Like the Armisians, there are not many KseIn in the One With A Thousand Stars. Their cold blooded organism disagrees with the temperatures in space, and there is a heavy distrust towards spaceships, especially singularity powered, after witnessing some of the tragic failures of early wormhole generation. In general, the KseIn who leave their home planet to go to space are loners, thrill seekers or diplomats.

I've got this OC that I've never actually written about yet, mainly because the fanfic I intended him for was never written in the end and probably won't be and I haven't found someplace new for him yet. He's for Doctor Who and I, personally, think he's adorable so I'm gonna share about him, the poor OC who remains homeless (fic-deprived baby).
So first, a bit of backstory. I came up with this character many, many years ago during Eleven's era. Originally intended to interact with the Tenth Doctor and an AU version of the Master, but mostly Jenny (the Doctor's Daughter, not Vastra's wife). So this character I think came before things like Clara the Souffle obsessed Dalek (though she inspired a completely different fic idea that's never been written) and definitely before that one episode where they pulled off a Jules Verne novel inside Dalek armor to let the one good Dalek be a good Dalek which apparently just means this Dalek kills other Daleks.
You may notice a focus on Daleks.
Fred the Dalek. Named by Jenny. Occasionally called Freddie. He doesn't like killing and enjoys pretty things. Terrified of ducks - they wanna crack open his shell and eat him like calamari, he's absolutely certain of it. And the Master agreeing that ducks probably would eat him does not help.
His genetics come from the last of the original Kaled DNA still in stock during the Time War, but due to an error during the cloning process to create him, he's got slightly more unmutated Kaled DNA in him than the average Dalek. Not by a lot, but enough that he's wired differently and the standard dalek brainwashing didn't take as a result. He fled the Time War and eventually settled on a colony world where Humans, Silurians, and Reptilia Sapiens have settled peacefully. Uncertain as to whether the colonists would recognize what he was, the Dalek who would soon be known as Fred hid in the forests and was harassed by the local duck population (transported there by the colonists to be one of the species introduced as part of the planet's terraforming process) who had absolutely zero instinctive fear of the dalek.
There were also geese but he couldn't tell the difference, those were just oversized ducks that honk as far as he's concerned.
When Jenny arrives on planet, soon after leaving her own point of origin world behind in search of adventure and, eventually, her dad, there is of course trouble afoot in the colony and the Dalek is being blamed for it. A red herring and deliberate bit of misdirection from the true culprit.
Jenny befriends the Dalek, entirely unfamiliar with Dalek kind. While the Dalek freaks out because TIME LADY!!! O_O But Jenny isn't going to let the Dalek be blamed for something he didn't do and winds up earning his trust. She names him Fred because that seems like a nice, non-threatening name and definitely not because I'm naming him after the character from Scooby-Doo or anything like that. The two of them solve the mystery, yank the ghost sheet off the real perpetrator... metaphorically... and the colony is saved.
But Fred knows he can't really live there hidden away peacefully anymore and he winds up leaving with Jenny where they move on to their next adventure.
The Master would tend to treat Fred as Jenny's pet, to Jenny's annoyance. The Doctor would absolutely be trying not to have a panic attack when he realizes his daughter's bestie is a Dalek. Upon meeting both the Doctor and the Master for the first time (on separate occasions) Fred attempted to hide behind Jenny both times. Considering he is a sentient, sapient octopus wearing a giant pepper shaker shaped tank and Jenny is fairly slender, this is not an ideal hiding spot for him.

I smiled and tiled my head.
"Oh? From me? Not your silly wizards in their ivory towers?"
They made a face and shook their head. No. No, no, no, of course not. Yes they are talented and-" He vaguely gestured his hand into the air and then to me- "not you."
"You think I am talented?" I mused to the very calm and confident wizardling.
"Oh yes. I read back through some of your old sightings and there is no way you aren't a terraforming expert. Maybe even transmutation. " He waved his pencil with a little animal on top. A fox perhaps? "You took on Big Grey and the ruins left behind were-" He kissed his fingertips and wiggled them into the air. "Wrought with powerful magics, even for a dragon. You study and I'd love to get your help and stick it to Master Alpore-"
"ALPORE?!" I bellowed, scaring the wizardling. I stopped before I got too excited. "She and I are not on speaking terms." I think he noticed me covering a car across my side.
He straightened up his clothing. "Yes. I understand that. I want to make her jealous and I knew you'd be the right person." We quickly had matching smiles and I began to draw my own runes.
As a dragon, you are used to humans entering to obtain your treasure or your head. "I need help with my magic school homework" is a new one though.

Can I Be a Successful DevOps Engineer Without a Degree?
In the ever-evolving world of technology, the traditional path of obtaining a four-year computer science degree is no longer the only gateway into a rewarding tech career. Many aspiring professionals today are asking: Can I become a successful DevOps engineer without a degree? The answer is a resounding yes—but with a caveat: success in DevOps without a degree demands dedication, practical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and a passion for continuous learning.
DevOps is an intersection of development, operations, and automation. While degrees can certainly provide a foundational understanding, they’re not always aligned with the hands-on, tool-heavy world of modern DevOps. The role is deeply practical, requiring the ability to work with cloud platforms, CI/CD pipelines, container orchestration, infrastructure automation, and real-time monitoring tools.
What matters most in DevOps is competence—not credentials. In fact, many organizations rely on managed DevOps services to bring in seasoned engineers who may or may not have formal degrees but excel in real-world delivery and reliability.
Skills Over School: What Really Counts
To thrive in DevOps, you need to master tools like Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins, Git, Terraform, Ansible, and various cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP. You’ll also need to understand how CI/CD pipelines work, how to deploy and scale applications, and how to monitor them effectively.
There are plenty of self-taught DevOps engineers who’ve leveraged online courses, certifications, open-source contributions, and real-world projects to build a strong portfolio. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and free community content offer more practical, up-to-date knowledge than many degree programs. The ability to showcase your work on GitHub or through blog posts often carries more weight than a diploma.
Moreover, companies that offer DevOps as a service prioritize experience, output, and reliability over academic backgrounds. They seek individuals who can solve deployment bottlenecks, optimize cloud infrastructure, and automate redundant processes.
Example: From Non-Degree to DevOps Pro
Consider the journey of Ankit, a retail worker with a strong interest in tech. With no formal IT degree, he started learning Linux and basic scripting in his free time. Within six months, he built his own CI/CD pipeline, containerized personal projects, and started contributing to open-source tools. He earned certifications in AWS and Kubernetes, applied for internships, and eventually landed a full-time role as a junior DevOps engineer.
Today, Ankit works with clients on cloud automation projects, using infrastructure as code and setting up monitoring stacks. He’s a clear example of how grit, curiosity, and consistency can outshine traditional education.
As Gene Kim, author of The Phoenix Project, once said: “DevOps is not just about technology. It’s about culture, collaboration, and solving real problems.” None of those qualities are exclusive to people with degrees.
Startups Are Open to Self-Taught Talent
Startups, in particular, are more open to hiring based on skills rather than academic background. They value agility, experimentation, and results. If you're wondering what's the best DevOps platform for startups, it's often one built by practical, hands-on engineers who understand both product and infrastructure needs.
For those without degrees, startups offer the ideal playground to showcase what you can do—whether it's setting up container orchestration, optimizing cloud costs, or building fault-tolerant deployment systems. The key is to focus on learning by doing.
The Role of Mentorship and Consulting Services
Another great way to accelerate your DevOps journey is by learning from experienced mentors or working within companies offering DevOps consulting services. These companies often run client projects that expose junior engineers to best practices in automation, monitoring, and cloud scalability—allowing them to learn on the job.
Working alongside seasoned consultants gives you real-world exposure that no textbook can offer. Over time, you develop a deeper understanding of infrastructure challenges, compliance, team collaboration, and production-grade environments.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, yes—you can become a successful DevOps engineer without a degree. Focus on gaining hands-on experience, mastering essential tools, building a portfolio, and continuously learning from the community and mentors around you. The tech world is meritocratic, especially in fields like DevOps where your results speak louder than your résumé.
