So it offers a lot of functionality in a tiny app, but that's on OSX. I figure a click on the meter would bring up System Monitor anyway like the standard Gnome System Monitor panel applet does. I'm not really concerned with the flyout-stats (the larger window with the far more detailed information) but it would be useful as well. If I can get something that covers a few of those stats I'd be one happy camper, indeed. Ci sono poi tutta una serie di applicazioni che sono direttamente correlate alla mia attività lavorativa e che, dunque, possono non avere nessun interesse generalista. Ecco perché divido la lista in diverse sezioni, con la consapevolezza che non tutto ciò che io ritengo essenziale lo sia anche per gli altri.

Sul portatile aggiungo anche l'indicatore di batteria personalizzato, perché si può sceglierne l'aspetto in modo condizionale (quando è carico, scarico, in carica) e si può anche cliccare per vedere tante info in più.

Per questi ultimi usavo un tempo ChronoSync, che ha qualche opzione in più, ma nel complesso ho trovato più conveniente mantenere sempre aggiornata la licenza di CCC che ha più frecce al proprio arco anche se meno specialistica. 33,70€

DaisyDisk 4.5 Potreste non considerarla essenziale anche solo per un motivo: esistono alternative che fanno più o meno la stessa cosa e invece di costare 10,99€ sono gratuite. Tuttavia quando ho bisogno di dare uno sguardo approfondito allo spazio occupato sul mio Mac per trovare cumuli di file cancellabili, l'unica app che mi viene in mente di usare è DaisyDisk. La sua interfaccia è bellissima ma è soprattutto il metodo di visualizzazione a torta e la semplice navigazione in profondità oltre che il cestino dinamico che la rendono l'unica app del genere da considerare. La licenza non è molto costosa ed è presente anche sul Mac App Store ma compratela dal sito dello sviluppatore per ottenere una versione più completa che può analizzare anche i file nascosti e di sistema.

TranslateTab Il mese scorso mi dava qualche problema (si bloccava la UI ogni tanto) e ho provato a cambiarla. Ne ho acquistate altre due simili ma nessuna ha la stessa velocità operativa (supporta tante shortcut) e gestisce bene i testi lunghi. Per chi lavora su internet avere un'icona nella barra dei menu sempre pronta per traduzioni in tempo reale direttamente è comodissimo. Mi capita di dover convertire dal tedesco, dal francese, persino dal cinese e giapponese di tanto in tanto. In più la utilizzo per alcuni testi più ostici in inglese e per verificare la correttezza di quelli che scrivo io. Costa circa 5,49€ ed ha qualche difettuccio di funzionamento ogni tanto (richiede internet, ovviamente), ma è ampiamente la migliore nel suo genere.

Magnet Per tantissimo tempo ho usato Moom sui miei Mac, una piccola app che aggiungere un popup sul pulsante verde delle finestre per definirne un dimensionamento specifico in base a preset o ad una griglia personalizzata. Rimane ancora una delle mie preferite ma da quando macOS offre la possibilità di "appicciare" due finestre ne sto facendo a meno e al suo posto utilizzo la più semplice Magnet (al momento in offerta a 1€). Offre un numero limitato di dimensioni al contrario di Moom, tuttavia è meno invadente ed ha una serie di scorciatoie molto comode. In particolare usando uno schermo esterno sull'iMac o sul portatile, ho il problema che ogni tanto macOS decide di non riattivarlo ma lo considera comunque in funzione, per cui se ho una finestra sul display secondario non ho modo di vederla. Magnet ha tra le opzioni proprio lo spostamento di un'app tra gli schermi con una shortcut e mi aiuta spessissimo. In generale offre un sistema di snap semplice ma efficiente, che ricorda quello di Windows 10 ma con qualche funzione in più Per quel che costa, specie con le offerte temporanee, vale davvero la pena di averla.

TripMode Ho iniziato ad usarla relativamente da poco ma si è ritagliata immediatamente un ruolo di primo piano su tutti i miei Mac. Sarà che in questo periodo ho problemi continui alla linea Internet e mi tocca ripiegare sul tethering spessissimo, ma trovo che questa piccola utility sia davvero comodissima in mille circostanze come ho spiegato nella mia recensione.

ReadKit 2 Non è bella come Reeder 3 ma sul Mac la preferisco perché supporta un numero maggiore di servizi, tra cui Pocket, e consente di creare cartelle smart che funzionano trasversalmente tra tutti i nostri account. Sicuramente da migliorare per l'interfaccia ma funzionalmente non ha rivali e merita i suoi 10€.

SDFormatter Piccola utility gratuita che non si può non avere: Utility Disco di macOS è una delle app peggio riuscite dopo il suo restyling e non è mai stata davvero perfetta. Capita spesso di mandare in tilt una pendrive o una memoria SD, con partizioni nascoste che non si rimuovono e file system corrotti. In questi casi una passata con SDFormatter ripristina una situazione di partenza pulita in FAT32 e poi si potrà fare quel che si preferisce.

Parcel 3 L'ho provata e riprovata più volte in passato ma proprio non la digerivo per via di una UI basata su uno schema cromatico sgradevole e la mancanza di una versione per Android o Windows. Tuttavia con il passare degli anni si è un po' svecchiata ed è diventata la mia preferita perché ha un pratico sistema di sincronizzazione iOS/macOS e supporta quasi tutti i corrieri. Dimenticavo di dire cosa fa: consente di tenere traccia di tutte le proprie spedizioni, avvisando dei vari avanzamenti di stato. La versione gratuita ha una limitazione sul numero di pacchi contemporanei, per cui sono dovuto passare all'account premium... tradotto: un altro abbonamento da 3,49€ all'anno. Tuttavia arrivo a seguire anche 20 pacchi in entrata/uscita, senza un'app del genere impazzirei.

Forklift 3 Cosa c'è di meglio del Finder? Di strumenti sostitutivi ce ne sono diversi ma con Forklift si ha tutto quello che può servire ed anche di più. Non è solo un gestore di file molto più avanzato ma include tutta una serie di strumenti avanzati per la sincronizzazione delle cartelle per l'accesso di rete ed anche su server remoti SFTP/FTP/ecc... con un solo acquisto di $29.95 si ottiene uno strumento che può tornare utile in mille occasioni. Ad esempio offre anche un tool di rinomina in batch abbastanza completo e consente di creare archivi Zip senza portarsi dietro i file spazzatura di macOS, cosa consigliabile per chi lavora in ambienti misti con PC Windows.

QREncoder È sempre comoda da avere: è gratuita, abbastanza completa e funziona bene. Si tratta di un semplice strumento che consente di creare codici QR validi per siti, bigliettini, eventi e qualsiasi altra cosa vi venga in mente. Iniziate ad installarlo e vedrete che prima o poi lo userete, specialmente ora che i QRCode vengono riconosciuti anche dall'app fotocamera di iOS.

TextExpander 6 Questa è un po' border-limit, perché in effetti la uso tantissimo sul lavoro. Per sostituzioni semplici si può già adoperare la funzione nativa di macOS o anche lo stesso Alfred (che infatti adopero per trasformare al volo le emoticons in emoji), ma TextExpander è molto di più di questo. Oltre a poter trasformare una serie di caratteri anche in testo formattato e di lunga dimensione, consente di far apparire un popup con richiesta di alcuni parametri. Ad esempio io ho delle email preconfezionate dove però devo personalizzare volta per volta alcune porzioni. Queste possono essere trasformate in variabili e TextExpander ci chiederà di inserirle in una finestrella prima di espandere il nostro snippet. Non potete immaginare quanto tempo mi faccia risparmiare ogni giorno ma purtroppo anche questo è diventato in abbonamento. Io ormai non ne posso fare a meno, per cui pago, ma se partite da zero ed avete esigenze simili provate prime con le soluzioni gratuite.

EasyRes 1.1 Se utilizzate uno o più monitor esterni, questa app è la migliore nel suo genere. Credetemi se vi dico che ne ho provate tante prima di lei. Con una semplice icona nella menu bar offre una miniatura di ogni schermo connesso e consente di selezionare tutte le risoluzioni supportate, dividendole tra HiDPI e normali, con la possibilità di salvare una lista di preferite e con un nome proprio specifico per ogni schermo. Per giunta è gratis mentre altre che ho acquistato sono meno efficienti.

PDF Expert Non la uso molto avendo il pacchetto Creative Cloud completo con Acrobat, inoltre per esigenze più semplici sui PDF c'è già Anteprima che svolge un attimo lavoro. Nel mezzo si trova PDF Expert, snella ma abbastanza potente, consente di lavorare sui PDF con una marcia in più e senza la lentezza di Adobe Acrobat. Ammetto però che non credo la riacquisterei al prezzo attuale di 65€, conviene attendere qualche offerta.

CleanMyMac 3 È l'unica app del suo genere di cui mi fidi. Oltre a far liberare un sacco di spazio eliminando componenti aggiunti non utili (ad esempio le lingue oltre ad italiano ed inglese) lo trovo comodissimo quando devo disinstallare qualcosa che non abbia un proprio tool. Molte app si possono semplicemente buttare nel cestino ma se le mettiamo dentro CleanMyMac ci fa vedere tutte le dipendenze e possiamo localizzarle anche con il Finder o il Terminale per fare pulizia in modo più profondo. Costa quasi 40€ ma garantisce aggiornamenti costanti praticamente a vita.

Transmission Per lungo tempo ho preferito usare uTorrent al suo posto, ma ultimamente questa è diventata un ricettacolo di pubblicità e l'ho voluta mettere da parte. Inoltre Transmission usa lo stesso backend che ho sul NAS e quindi posso usare le medesime app per il controllo remoto. Non scarico molti torrent, anzi quasi nessuno, ma è comoda da avere pronta in caso di necessità.

VLC 3 Ogni volta che apro quest'app mi cadono le braccia a terra per quanto è brutta l'interfaccia. Che bei tempi quando su macOS si poteva installare il pacchetto Perian e avere tutti i codec audio/video del mondo integrati in QuickTime. Oggi ci sono delle app che cercano di essere il VLC di turno ma con una bella UI e ne ho usate a decine, credetemi, ma tutte falliscono miseramente dopo qualche mese. C'è quella che inizia a mostrare pubblicità o ad installare schifezza, quella che non viene più sviluppata e cose così. Alla fine mi sono rassegnato e uso VLC, anche se cerco di chiudere gli occhi ogni volta che la avvio. Sarebbe troppo chiedere un'interfaccia decente o le skin anche su macOS?

iFlicks 2 Rientra nella lista degli essenziali per un pelo, ma in effetti lo installo sempre e se si "vive" all'interno dell'ecosistema Apple anche in termini di iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, ecc... può essere davvero comodo. In sostanza serve a convertire file video in formati digeribili nativamente da tutti i dispositivi Apple, in alcuni casi anche solo inserendoli in un apposito contenitore senza effettuare una ricodifica. Oltre a questo ha il vantaggio di cercare online tutti i metadati per completare i file, aggiungendo titoli, locandine, trama, ecc... creando un catalogo coerente, pratico da sfogliare e bello da vedere. Il problema è che risulta davvero caro (quasi 39€ nel momento in cui scrivo), spesa che ha senso solo se si sfrutta davvero tanto.

HandBrake 1.1 Un software open-source imprescindibile per chiunque. Non è semplice come iFlicks e non si mette a sistemare per noi i metadati dei file, tuttavia apre qualsiasi formato video e lo converte in qualsiasi altro. Negli ultimi mesi lo sto usando spessissimo perché ho deciso di fare i RIP in HEVC di tutti i miei BluRay e questo è il sistema di conversione che preferisco. L'ultima versione ha anche reso la UI più coerente e completa. Davvero un must-have.

Mediainfo Che codifica ha questo video? Quali tracce audio e con che qualità? E il framerate? Queste e tante altre cose ce le dice Mediainfo semplicemente trascinandoci sopra un filmato. Costa circa 1€ sul Mac App Store ed è comodissima da avere anche se magari non si userà tutti i giorni.

Spotify Da qualche mese ho iniziato ad usare Apple Music, tutto per colpa dell'HomePod, ma il mio servizio musicale principale è e rimane Spotify. L'app per Mac è basata su una webview ma funziona mediamente bene ed è veloce e completa. Saltuariamente dà qualche errore di connessione ma nel complesso merita più di altre. Con la versione gratuita del servizio è meglio usare l'iPhone, perché su iOS ci sono meno limiti, ma se siete utenti Premium l'app desktop offre un'esperienza ben più completa.

Audacity È gratuita, open-source e multi-piattaforma. Si aspetta a momenti la versione aggiornata per i 64-bit ma è comunque il più pratico tool di editing e registrazione audio su qualsiasi piattaforma. Anche usando software ben più complessi (e costosi) per lavoro, quando ho da fare cose semplici apro sempre Audacity. Così come non apro Photoshop ma il semplice Anteprima se devo solo tagliare o ridimensionare una immagine: ogni strumento ha il suo campo di applicazione ideale.

Audio Hijack Costa $59 e non la uso tutti i giorni, eppure non potrei farne davvero a meno. Consente di  filtrare, reindirizzare, applicare effetti in real-time o registrare ogni singolo dispositivo audio del computer. Non solo quelli hardware (come un microfono) ma anche quelli virtuali rappresentati dai vari software. L'impiego più banale è quello di salvare in tracce audio di qualsiasi qualità e formato ogni sorgente musicale possibile, ma i suoi usi vanno ben al di là di questo. Ad esempio potete registrare contemporaneamente da due microfoni in tracce separate e allo stesso tempo mixarne una terza con questi più un tappeto musicale e/o effetti audio aggiunti tramite altri software. Un'applicazione davvero spettacolare.

Comunicazione

Telegram È eccellente, davvero non saprei cosa recriminargli. Non dico che sia l'app o il servizio perfetto ma di certo è il migliore esempio di sistema di messaggistica multi-dispositivo e multi-piattaforma che esista. Whatsapp ha numeri superiori ma, al contrario di questa, Telegram può essere uno strumento di produttività molto efficiente, non solo un luogo dove scambiarsi messaggini. In passato usavo Franz un po' per tutto e ogni tanto la rimpiango, però ho notato che l'app di Telegram era più limitata, che con Slack mi dava problemi di timeout, con i messaggi di Facebook non aggiornava le notifiche... insomma, alla fine ho ripreso ad usare app singole.

Skype Sarà anche peggiorata da quando sta sotto le ali di MS, ma per chiamate di gruppo resta ancora la soluzione più pratica e completa. È il nostro strumento preferito per allinearci nella registrazione dei podcast (le tracce audio le registriamo con Audacity in locale) ed è comodo essendo multipiattaforma e sempre aggiornato (anche troppo...).

Slack Può essere utile in qualsiasi attività nella sua forma gratuita, pure per gestire piccoli team e progetti. Noi la usiamo per la redazione di SaggiaMente e per offrire una piattaforma protetta a tutti i SaggiUtenti donatori, dove possono scambiarsi informazioni o aiutarsi l'un l'altro sugli argomenti più disparati, essendo anche in diretto contatto con noi h24. È gratuita nella versione base che non ha limitazioni davvero rilevanti per la maggior parte degli scenari, per cui vi consiglio di provarla: se riuscite a convincere tutto il vostro gruppo di lavoro ad usarla vi renderete conto di quanto possa essere utile!

Tweetbot 2 Non so voi ma io uso Twitter sempre meno oggigiorno. C'è stato un momento in cui era diventato il mio servizio informativo, di messaggistica e social principale, mentre ora fatico a trovargli una collocazione nella mia giornata. Rischio di rispondere esclusivamente ai messaggi diretti o alle mention per intere settimane, senza scrivere nulla di mio. Ho comunque tanti account in ballo per i vari siti/progetti al di là di quello personale e Tweetbot è sempre stato il miglior client esistente. Soldi spesi bene per quanto mi riguarda.

Applicazioni abbandonate che ancora uso

Wunderlist Ormai acquistata da Microsoft che l'ha abbandonata e ne ha creato una versione peggiore e con un sacco di limiti. Ecco perché, finché sarà disponibile, continuerò imperterrito a preferire questa. Sarò sincero, per le Note ormai uso l'app nativa di Apple, che è cresciuta tantissimo in termini di qualità ed efficienza nell'ultimo anno, ma per i task quotidiani Promemoria è indecente. Troppo limitata nella forma e nella sostanza, con una interfaccia scomoda e poco scalabile. Insomma, per i ToDo rapidi e con liste condivise e condivisibili, Wunderlist è ancora la numero uno tra le gratuite.

TextWrangler Per la serie morto che cammina, l'editor di testo gratuito di Bare Bones è ancora il mio preferito pur essendo stato abbandonato. La software house ora spinge all'utilizzo del proprio BBEdit ma non è altrettanto intuitivo e rapido oltre a pressare per passare alla versione a pagamento. Finché questa funzionerà io continuerà ad utilizzarla per coding veloce visto che supporta moltissimi linguaggi di programmazione con colorazione della sintassi, apertura multifile con memoria ed offre ottimi strumenti per ricerca e sostituzione.

FontCase L'ho acquistata tanto tempo fa sul Mac App Store, quando FontExplorer X di Linotype è diventata a pagamento mirando ad un pubblico aziendale di fascia un po' più alta rispetto le mie necessità. L'app è stata abbandonata ed ha sempre avuto qualche problemuccio di crash, che è rimasto tuttora visto che non ci sono più aggiornamenti da secoli. Continuo ad installarla trovandola nella lista dei miei acquisti, almeno finché sarà possibile, ma so già che dovrò comprare FontExplorer X Pro quanto prima. Si tratta di una versione ben più evoluta del libro font di sistema, che consente di avere un archivio memorizzato su un servizio cloud come dropbox, di organizzare tutti i font per tipologia, categoria, cartelle, visualizzandoli con anteprime prima di attivarli e con una serie plugin per i principali programmi di grafica che fanno installare il font giusto appena richiesto, tutto in tempo reale. È sicuramente più utile per chi ha a che fare con la grafica quindi la metto qui giusto come segnalazione perché è effettivamente una delle primissime app che installo ancora oggi (aprile 2018) su tutti i miei Mac.

Pixa Non è ufficialmente abbandonata ma l'ultimo update risale a dicembre del 2016, per cui non ne consiglierei l'acquisto oggigiorno, visto anche il suo prezzo di quasi 30€. È però presente in tutti i miei Mac vista la comodità con cui consente di catalogare e ricercare elementi grafici posizionando la libreria nel percorso che si preferisce (io la tengo su Dropbox). Non so se esiste qualcosa del genere ma di più aggiornato, però fa il suo dovere da diversi anni senza difficoltà, per cui è ancora la mia prima scelta.

Per il mio lavoro

Il mio lavoro negli ultimi anni si è focalizzato su un numero minore di attività. La programmazione si è ridotta per lo più a semplice scripting per lo sviluppo web ma ogni giorno scrivo articoli o faccio foto, qualche volta a settimane registro o monto video e saltuariamente mi capita ancora di lavorare nel campo della grafica più tradizionale per loghi, locandine o libri. Molte delle attività quotidiane le svolgo con le app sopra descritte ma le principali ne richiedono di specifiche. Eviterò di scendere troppo nel dettaglio in questo caso, ma non posso non citare Photoshop, Lightroom ed Illustrator... principali app per cui pago l'abbonamento Creative Cloud e grazie al quale utilizzo anche Premiere, Audition e pure un po' di After Effects di recente. Per il montaggio audio preferivo Logic di Apple ma ho la versione 9 e trovandomi Audition "omaggio" nell'abbonamento Adobe ho preferito evitare di acquistare Logic Pro X (ma sono davvero molto tentato). Ho provato più volte a passare ad altri software per la grafica ma per l'uso che ne faccio io nulla equipara la potenza di Photoshop. Lo conosco da secoli ormai e non c'è nulla che mi riesca a soddisfare ugualmente alla lunga, seppure io abbia acquistato e provato a fondo sia Pixelmator che i software del pacchetto Affinity. In futuro spero però di passare all'abbonamento "ristretto" al solo ambito fotografico non appena mi deciderò ad abbandonare Premiere Pro. Final Cut Pro X lo so usare ma proprio non mi piace il suo modo di gestire progetti e timeline, per cui non avevo molte alternative valide, ma è cresciuta sempre di più la convinzione di provare seriamente Da Vinci Resolve con la release 15 in arrivo e spero di poter fare il cambio definitivo questa estate.

Ulysses è il mio tool di scrittura preferito, dove butto giù le bozze di quelli che poi diventano articoli o recensioni, ma purtroppo è passato anche questo da licenza singola ad abbonamento. Sta diventando una tortura... spendo quasi più in abbonamenti software che per le "bollette". Tra questi c'è anche Microsoft Office 365, che onestamente trovo molto comodo per l'efficienza di Word e le potenzialità di Excel, nonché per lo spazio di OneDrive che uso per stoccare i dati che mi servono solo per Windows nel cloud (così come uso iCloud solo per quelli relativi al Mac). Se avete avuto un brivido nel leggere la parola "efficienza" a fianco di "Word" sappiate che sembra strano anche a me che uso computer da 30 anni pieni. Eppure è così: tanto per fare un esempio banale, il software di scrittura di Microsoft è l'unico che facendo copia e incolla oggi esporta testo pulito con una formattazione adatta anche al web, senza portarsi dietro stili, classi e schifezze... cosa per cui era rinomato (ma in negativo) nelle sue precedenti versioni. Per i documenti personali adopero sempre Pages, Numbers e Keynote, poiché più snelli e amichevoli, ma per il lavoro il pacchetto di Office sta ancora ben più avanti.

Per lo sviluppo web ho usato per anni Dreamweaver (quando era di Macromedia). Poi sono passato ad Espresso perché molto più snello e veloce ma oggi uso Coda. Questo software ha qualche difettuccio ed alcuni bug perenni, ma funziona bene nella scrittura ed è gradevole per la UI e le logiche di funzionamento, specie grazie alla sincronizzazione cloud dei server con Panic Sync. La stessa azienda realizza anche Transmit che è senza dubbio una delle mie applicazioni preferite di sempre sia sua macOS che su iOS, dove però è stata abbandonata. Sigh! Dopo diversi anni in cui adoperavo principalmente Chrome sono ritornato felicemente su Safari. Nel mio Dock ci sono però anche quello insieme a Firefox ed Opera. Li uso tutti per controllo di resa, per compatibilità con alcuni servizi e per salvare accessi separati a servizi che ho con altri account sul browser principale. Infine non posso fare a meno di Toast Titanium per la masterizzazione dei DVD e BluRay Video che consegno ai clienti, anche se non amo la loro politica di rilasciare ogni anno una major release praticamente identica che aggiunge solo il supporto alle più recenti versioni di macOS (infatti uso ancora la 14 per ora).

I don't really like the new Twitter for Mac compared to the old one, so that is why I still use the older version. Adium - I love Adium and use it everyday. It is the best IM client on OS X by far. I have changed the menu bar icon to a 1up icon depicting a mushroom from the Super Mario games. gfxCardStatus - My Macbook Pro 15" has both Intel HD and AMD Radeon 6750m GPUs in it, and OS X only gives the user to have automatic switching between both GPUs or using the discrete Radeon only. gfxCardStatus lets me use the integrated Intel GPU only so I can save on battery life when I am unplugged. SMARTReporter - I always worry about my SSD and external hard drives' health/S.M.A.R.T. status, so I keep this utility on at all times. I even have it so it sends me an email if it is starting to fail! MenuMeters - From left to right, I have two aqua lights that show Disk Activity, then since I have a quad core Macbook Pro, it shows me the usage from all four cores. Memory usage is next, showing me the used and free totals, and lastly, we end with network, which upon clicking on it, shows me detailed information about my current network, which is through gigabit ethernet. Airport - Currently off, as I use gigabit ethernet most of the time. Bluetooth - Currently off, but I do have it on whenever I need to transfer a file or I am paired with another device. Time Machine - I have recently reinstalled and haven't plugged in my external Firewire drive as of yet. Otherwise, this icon is really handy to see how much OS X has backed up and its progress. Sound - Usually I have an optical cable running from my laptop to my set of Logitech Z-5500 speakers and the icon would be greyed out, but I am currently away from my desk, so I am using the built-in speakers and the icon is usable. Battery - I have my laptop battery on the left side and my APC UPS battery on the right side. I love to show both, so that way I know which one is being charged at the moment. Time and Date - I have it set to 12H time and day only, because I am so used to clicking the icon and finding out the exact day. Spotlight - I use it constantly. I just couldn't use OS X without it.
