i attended a medieval literature class where every single student had watched bbc’s merlin and some of the ways the show was described include

‘the one where king arthur has a hot magical twink’

‘has an evil cgi dragon acting like a bridge toll giving prophecies and riddles’

‘the gay one with the gays and the lesbians’

and my personal favourite, ‘merlin commits too hard to the bit and suffers for it’

My headcanon: in Avalon, the sidhe granted Arthur immortality becos he only returned once Merlin the last piece of Albion, was going insane/losing himself to grief & the only way Albion could be assured safety for eternity was if the once & future king Arthur remained by his side!!!! I wrote a fic.

I was thinking about how usually when someone claims they would “die for you" or they would “kill for you".

The next thing their lover usually asks of them is, “but would you live for me?”

Because someone who is that deeply in love, doesn’t want to live after their partner has died.

Now, I’m thinking about Merlin and how (even if he could die; which he can’t 💔).

I think he would have stayed alive as long as possible, just to have the opportunity to see Arthur again.

Because staying alive all that time, would be painful beyond measure and yet it wouldn’t be a fraction of the pain he felt, as the king he loved died in his arms.

Bbc merlin is such a comedy. Arthur keeps telling Merlin they can’t be friends because they are prince and servant, while Merlin straight up tells Uther they have a special bond and Uther is glad

I could say that realizing every artist's dream of completing a project like this wasn't easy, and while it's true, I must thank you all once again for encouraging me with your sweet comments and messages. It's thanks to you that a one-part punchline became a full 202 pages (!!!) story.

There is nothing in this world that could convince my little lizard brain that Arthur and Merlin are canonically the same height. They trade heights based on who’s using their shared brain cell in any given moment and that’s that.

I will genuinely never let go of that fact that Arthur never found out Balinor was Merlin’s father. fuck the magic, that’s the secret that haunts me the most.

I wish Arthur found out early on, maybe if Merlin snapped after ‘no man is worth your tears.’ And Merlin swears that he did not inherit Balinor’s dragonlord powers (Arthur does not know they are passed father to son) and Arthur believes him.

and then YEARS later Arthur is bleeding out in the finale and Merlin calls Kilgharrah and Arthur is like wait. hold the fuck up. you said you were not a dragonlord

and Merlin’s standing there with the blood of hundreds on his hands, his last remaining sanity hanging by a thread like my brother in christ you cannot actually believe that’s where i drew the line about lying

this scene will haunt me till my dying day... ok, let me explain this:

we get absolutely gutwrenching lines from merlin and nothing but complete confusion from arthur....

and then of course this iconic interaction:

The whole scene is equal parts funny and heart-shattering, because Merlin is saying goodbye to the love of his life Arthur, preparing to sacrifice himself, while Arthur just has no clue whatsoever about what is going on and is very confused by Merlin's sincerity.

the thing about merlin and arthur is that, while yes there are lots of moments we can point to in the show when arthur is an utter arse to merlin, he is in fact — and especially based on what arthur knows — incredibly accepting and indulgent of merlin, about everything from his more seemingly benign quirks (intense strangeness... see: woodworms) to his more serious transgressions (apparently disappearing for days at a time for, *checks notes*, a drunken bender) and arthur just. lets him. by series 4 especially. merlin gets away with murder (which, to arthur at least, is an idiom)

and the thing about that is! i think merlin sees this as arthur ultimately not caring, further evidence of arthur not seeing him, and of arthur dismissing him as ultimately unimportant, in the grand scheme of things. but it's actually because arthur has just decided to dismiss whatever it is he has to, to have merlin in his life.
