Mi Notebook Ultra review: Xiaomi energises the boring consumer PC segment

I was planning to buy a midrange laptop and was amazed to see that every other legacy brand in the consumer PC market had products with similar features and specifications. Blame the oligopoly, but as a consumer I was almost convinced that the product offerings by the legacy PC makers were the best available in the market. And then was released the Mi Notebook Ultra by Chinese technology company Xiaomi.

A premium laptop, the Mi Notebook Ultra challenged the conventions set by legacy consumer PC makers by democratising features and specifications usually seen in laptops that cost almost twice as much as the top-end model (review unit – Rs 76,999) on offer here. Xiaomi Mi Notebook Ultra Let's talk about the Mi Notebook Ultra first. It's powered by Intel's 11th Gen Core i7-11370H processor with a maximum clock speed of 4.8GHz, but you also have the option to buy the one that comes with the same generation i5-11300H CPU, which goes up to 4.4GHz. Both models come with Intel's Iris Xe graphics to handle graphically intensive tasks. However, the i7 variant comes with a single 16GB RAM option, whereas the i5 version is also offered with 8GB RAM. While RAM amount differs, storage remains the same across all units - 512GB NVMe SSD. Mi Notebook Ultra comes with 11th Gen Intel CPU, up to 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD The Mi Notebook Ultra is 17.9mm thin, weighs 1.7 kg, and is made of 6-series aerospace-grade aluminum. The laptop packs a 15.6" 3,200x2,000-pixel Mi TrueLife+ Display having 16:10 aspect ratio and a 90Hz screen refresh rate. It also supports DC Dimming to reduce eye fatigue, and Xiaomi claims the TUV Rheinland Low Blue Light protection filters blue light without affecting the screen's color accuracy. The Mi Notebook Ultra features a full-size keyboard with a 3-level backlight and ships with a 70Whr battery advertised to offer over 12 hours of endurance. And you can charge it with the bundled 65W charger, which can fill the cell up to 50% in 45 minutes. Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro The Mi Notebook Pro is made of the same material as the Mi Notebook Ultra's, but it's thinner (17.3mm) and lighter (1.46 kg) than the Ultra variant. That's because the Pro model is built around a smaller 14" TrueLife Display having 2,560x1,600-pixel resolution. Like the Ultra, the Pro variant's screen also has a 16:10 aspect ratio, but the refresh rate maxes at 60Hz and the pixel density is down to 215ppi. The Mi Notebook Pro also ships with a smaller battery (56Whr), which is claimed to last an hour less than the Ultra's cell and goes from flat to 50% in 34 minutes. Complementing the solid build quality is the 15.6-inch 3.2K resolution screen of a 90Hz refresh rate with support for 100 per cent sRGB colour gamut. The display is stretched in a 16:10 aspect ratio and is covered with anti-glare coating. Compared with conventional 16:9 aspect ratio screens, the Mi Notebook Ultra screen is both wide and tall. Therefore, it is suitable for both productivity and entertainment purposes. As for the quality, the display is not the best out there in terms of brightness, colour rendition and viewing angles. These compromises, however, come to notice only if you work in bright outdoor conditions. When indoors, at home or office, the screen dazzles. While the Mi Notebook Ultra is a visual treat, the laptop’s audio leaves you asking for more. The laptop’s bottom-facing dual stereo speakers (2W each) lack loudness, depth and clarity. They work fine for basics but do not quite match the viewing experience offered by a competent screen.
