I went to see that Robbie Williams biopic yesterday, and all that's left from it in my mind is that song of Williams' fiancé that played in the background once, except that I just found out that instead of "Never Ever" by All Saints it's indeed "Happy Ending" from Mika that's stuck in my head.
Which teaches me two things about my subconscious:
It's a petty little bitch, who from a biopic full of great songs remembers the one song that the biopic protagonist would have hated to be remembered. And I respect that.
When it tricks me into thinking a different song – one that, fun fact, I like much more – is in fact that song that it wants me to remember out of sheer pettiness, then it kinda likes me. Which is just... aww! <3
#never ever#all saints#nicole appleton#happy ending#mika#michael holbrook penniman#better man#overall i didn't like that movie very much#i mean it's an okay film to watch#if one likes#robbie williams#but that whole deal with the animated ape is pure cowardice to me#in two ways even#because firstly they should have animated him much more like a real ape#instead of animating him like a human in an ape costume#like come on!#and secondly that ape thing is of course a very nice mask for williams to hide all his personal feelings in his very private moments#which is a wish that i respect very much#but then he shouldn't agree to making a fucking biopic#imho#oh and while we talk about it#why oh why is williams the only anthropomorphism?#why didn't they animate other singers as animals too?!#i would have loved to see the other Take That members as animals#or the fucking gallaghers!#to me this movie is mainly a bunch of lost opportunities#schroed's thoughts

Is a Painting Found at a Garage Sale a Van Gogh?
During Vincent van Gogh’s year-long stay in a French asylum, he created some 150 paintings—including Irises and The Starry Night. He also painted many interpretations of other artists’ work, calling them “translations.” As van Gogh wrote in a letter to his brother Theo, he was “not copying pure and simple” but rather “translating into another language, the one of colors, the impressions of chiaroscuro and white and black.”
Now, experts say they’ve identified a long-lost van Gogh translation: an oil portrait of a red-cheeked fisherman, which an antiques collector purchased at a garage sale in Minnesota for under $50.
The collector sold the piece to the art research firm LMI Group International for an undisclosed amount in 2019. Since then, the company’s researchers have been investigating the painting, and they recently released a 450-page report detailing their conclusion: It’s a van Gogh.
When art historian Maxwell L. Anderson, chief operating officer of LMI Group, first laid eyes on the painting, he was “struck by what [he] saw,” as he tells the Wall Street Journal’s Kelly Crow. “Was I all in? No,” he adds. “But I was super intrigued.”
At the garage sale, the collector had been intrigued by the painting’s impasto, a technique involving thickly laid paint. The 18-inch-tall portrait depicts a white-bearded man by the sea who is smoking a pipe and repairing a fishing net. His downcast eyes betray contemplation, and his face is marked by ruddy coloring and deep smile lines. In the work’s bottom right corner is a signature: the word “Elimar.”
Though the piece lacked van Gogh’s famously vivid colors, Anderson saw “telltale signs of a deft painter at play,” per the Wall Street Journal. He also noticed a hair embedded in the brushwork.
In its analysis of Elimar, LMI Group combined science and technology with “traditional tools of connoisseurship, historical context, formal analysis and provenance research,” as chairman, president and CEO Lawrence M. Shindell says in a statement.
The company hired Jennifer Mass, president of Scientific Analysis of Fine Art, to analyze the canvas’ fibers and pigments. One particular red—geranium lake, or PR-50—introduced doubts. Van Gogh died by suicide in 1890, and researchers have always thought geranium lake was first patented around 1905.
Mass brought in patent lawyer Ben Appleton to search for an earlier patent. After a month of research, his firm found an 1883 patent for PR-50—a “find-within-a-find for conservators, who can now date and authenticate works containing this red pigment to the late 19th century,” writes the Wall Street Journal.
A genetic analysis of the hair embedded in the painting revealed that it had belonged to someone with red or red-brown hair. As van Gogh’s 35 self-portraits illustrate, the artist had ginger locks. Additionally, researchers found that the letters in the painting’s “Elimar” inscription—particularly the Es, Ms and As—match those in an 1885 van Gogh painting.
Van Gogh regularly neglected to sign his paintings, but why mark this one “Elimar”? According to LMI Group, Elimar is the name of a character in the 1848 Danish novel The Two Baronesses by Hans Christian Andersen—one of van Gogh’s favorite authors.
According to the report, van Gogh painted Elimar in 1889, during his first year at the sanitarium in southern France. Experts think Elimar is a so-called translation of Danish artist Michael Ancher’s portrait of fisherman Niels Gaihede, “a subject to which both [painter Paul] Gauguin and van Gogh were drawn,” per the statement.
“As soon as we saw the Ancher, I knew we were right,” art historian and LMI Group researcher William Havlicek tells the Wall Street Journal.

Experts think Elimar was inspired by Michael Ancher’s portrait of fisherman Niels Gaihede
The analysis has provided “fresh insight into the oeuvre of van Gogh, particularly as it relates to his practice of reinterpreting works by other artists,” Anderson says in the statement. He thinks Elimar is “a form of spiritual self-portrait, allowing viewers to see the painter as he wished to be remembered.”
LMI Group will soon begin showing Elimar to major van Gogh scholars and dealers. They think the artwork is worth at least $15 million. Still, the painting’s authorship is not yet widely accepted, and art experts are generally hesitant to draw conclusions about newly discovered works’ authenticity.
“People love it when things fall through the cracks, and it would be wonderful if they found a van Gogh,” Richard Polsky, an art authenticator who wasn’t involved in the project, tells the Wall Street Journal. “But they’ve got to pin everything down and get a scholar at the Van Gogh Museum [in Amsterdam] to sign off on it.”
The Van Gogh Museum has seen the painting before. The anonymous buyer submitted it to the museum in 2019, and experts ruled that it wasn’t the real deal. However, the museum hasn’t yet responded to the new report.
“At the end of the day, the most important thing is what the experts in Van Gogh think of the artwork,” Robert Snell, co-owner and fine arts specialist at Revere Auctions in St. Paul, tells KARE’s Kent Erdahl.
Snell is particularly interested in the painting’s provenance. “Trying to figure out how that piece ended up at a garage sale in Minneapolis is really the $15 million mystery,” he adds.
By Sonja Anderson.

Lily James and Sebastian Stan Reportedly Cast in Secrets & Wives

Lily James and Sebastian Stan have reportedly joined the cast of Focus Features’ period film ‘Secrets & Wives.’ The movie, helmed by Carly Wray, is scheduled to start shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, and Vancouver, British Columbia, on an undisclosed date. The film, set in the 1980s rural Washington state, revolves around a single working mother named Sherry, who is swept off her feet by a charismatic, larger-than-life outsider named Martin Lewis. They run off and get married, only for hell to break loose. Sherry’s life gets turned upside down when it’s revealed that Martin is a married ex-gangster.
Lily and Stan are expected to play Sherry and Martin respectively. The two performers previously worked together for Hulu’s biographical series ‘Pam & Tommy,’ in which Lily plays actress and model Pamela Anderson and Stan portrays musician Tommy Lee.
Lily recently completed the filming of Sam Worthington and Riz Ahmed-starrer ‘Relay’ and Joseph Gordon-Levitt-starrer ‘Providence.’ Her upcoming release ‘The Iron Claw,’ starring Zac Efron and ‘The Bear’ fame Jeremy Allen White, is scheduled to be released on December 22, 2023. Her recent credits include Josephine Esperanto in ‘Finally Dawn,’ Zoe Stevenson in ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It?’ Linda Radlett in ‘The Pursuit of Love,’ and Ellie Appleton in ‘Yesterday.’
Stan recently concluded the filming of ‘A Different Man,’ in which he stars alongside Renate Reinsve. He is also a part of the cast of Marvel Studios’ ‘Thunderbolts.’ His recent credits include Vlad Tenev in ‘Dumb Money,’ God in ‘Ghosted,’ Max in ‘Sharper,’ Steve in ‘Fresh,’ Nick Fowler in ‘The 355,’ and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.’
Although the exact dates of the filming are yet to be announced, we can expect the same to begin after the conclusion of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Atlanta, known as the Hollywood East, is home to several production facilities and natural attractions. The city previously hosted the production of several famed projects, including ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Cobra Kai,’ ‘Ozark,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ etc. Vancouver AKA Hollywood North, on the other hand, is a significant filming location of ‘Virgin River,’ ‘Supernatural,’ ‘Criminal Minds,’ ‘The Last of Us,’ and ‘Fear the Walking Dead.’
Wray, who is at the helm, also penned the screenplay. The screenwriter wrote several acclaimed episodes of AMC’s drama series ‘Mad Men.’ She also co-wrote and co-executive produced HBO’s superhero series ‘Watchmen’ and Max’s dystopian series ‘DMZ.’ Her other credits include ‘Westworld,’ ‘Mindhunter,’ ‘The Leftovers,’ ‘The Bastard Executioner,’ and ‘Constantine.’
Berlanti/Schechter Films, New Leaf Literary & Media, and Truly*Adventurous team up with Focus Features for the production of the film. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Michael McGrath, Pouya Shahbazian, Matthew Pearl, and Greg Nichols are the producers.

Review: Better Man - Something Beautiful
Title: Better Man Directed by: Michael Gracey Written by: Simon Gleeson, Oliver Cole, Michael Gracey Starring: Robbie Williams, Alison Steadman, Jonno Davies, Stephen Pemberton, Kate Mulvaney, Carter J Murphy, Raechelle Banno, Frazer Hadfield Music by: Robbie Williams Choreography: Ashley Wallen Visual Effects Team: Wētā FX Visual Effects Supervisor: Luke Millar Production Design by: Joel Chang
"It might be cabaret but it's world class cabaret and I'm the fucking best at it. Fuck yourselves."
There are fair comparisons to be made between Better Man and Elton John's Rocketman. Both draw on fantastical elements to depict the experience of sudden and extreme fame. Rocketman does so through colourful, high-octance musical sequences and the image of the singer shooting up into the sky like the rocket man he sings about; Better Man is more rooted in reality but depicts its subject matter - the musician Robbie Williams - as a CGI chimpanzee.
Williams has spent his life, it seems, hiding his anxieties behind a 'cheeky monkey' persona but it is not to this that the ape-suit refers, i in his own terms Williams has always viewed himself as "unevolved" compared to those around him and it is this idea that saves the the CGI chimp from being a gimmick and makes it a unique and engaging stylistic choice. It takes all of ten minutes to get used to the CGI chimp and after that ten minutes it's difficult to imagine a human face and body in the same role and it is not so difficult to see the human being behind the chimpanzee eyes. After that ten minutes, the effect is almost invisible. It helps that none of the other characters allude to the fact that they are talking to a chimp. There is no wink and nudge; Williams' story is told with sincerity, making his presence as a chimpanzee and the film's energetic musical numbers - a Take That montage that jumps and flips around Regent Street, a delicate sequence in which he falls in love with Nicole Appleton, and an unexpectedly violent scene in which Knebworth Stadium is turned into a gladiatorial arena where Williams battles past versions of himself - seem utterly natural.
While the ups and downs of Williams' career aren't so different to sudden fame and cocaine blues depicted in many a musician's biopic, the commitment to the stylistic punt pays off totally and utterly. The schtick will - hopefully - put curious bums in cinema seats but the heart-felt sincerity in which the story is told will keep them there. Williams and director Michael Gracey took a massive risk and it absolutely works. There is a magic in Better Man, in Williams' words and Gracey's committed directing, that somehow, combined, make the emotions in the film more heartfelt and stronger than they would have been had Willimas been merely a man.
Other bits:
I've only written two reviews so far this year and they both reference Elton John and Rocketman so I think I should be expecting a cheque in the post soon
Good evening everybody! My name is Robbie Williams. This is my band, and for the next two hours, YOUR ASS IS MINE!" - bruh
all the song and dance sequences were outstanding - it needs to be said, it needs to be SHOUTED
that She's the One number was so beautiful
again, the absolute commitment to the bit that this film did is really what made it for me. I kept expecting, after his rehab, that he'd turn into a man, but I like the insinuation that even after sorting himself out, Robbie Williams still sees himself as a chimpanzee
"I'm gonna be fucking famous!" "Shut up, you tit." "Oh, fuck off Glenn."
Alex Godfrey's review is brilliant and captures everything that was so brilliant about the movie: https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/better-man/
I wasn't a huge fan of Robbie Williams when I went to see this - I liked some of his songs but his peak as a musician was somewhat before my time - I enjoy music biopics and this one caught my interest as a bold and cool way to tell this kind of story, but consider me converted I'm absolutely sold on his music now
the Relight My Fire setting was so good and effective in conveying how overwhelming it must be as a musician to face that scale of an audience and venue
I realise that it is probably not his story to tell, but I would have liked if the film had been more explicit bout the fact that Nicole had to get an abortion because her producer wouldn't let her have a baby. It made me think of Sinéad O'Connor, who refused to get an abortion and how she is probably a minority among the many women who have been treated this way. I think it would have been a good opportunity to at least shine a light on the issue in a conversation or argument about it, even if they didn't want to dwell on it for the entire film
fucking Oasis

I’m a fan of the Planet of the Apes films so of course I wanted to see Robbie William’s “Better Man”. This is his biopic where William’s is portrayed by a CGI chimpanzee. The story opens with young Robert (a chimp) and the CGI so charming, I immediately accepted this wild interpretation of his character.
Why a chimpanzee? In an interview director Michael Gracey explained that Robbie Williams always saw himself as a dancing monkey. (Now it makes sense!)
The movie follows Robbie William life from the age of 12, through joining the boy band Take That, and his eventual solo career, through about 2004.
Where the film is at its best is the musical numbers. They are dynamic and cleverly stage and edited. My favorites are: “I Found Heaven” depicting the early days of Take That; “She's the One” a montage of Williams relationship with Nicole Appleton; and I especially loved “Rock DJ” which made me giddy with its exuberance.

Beyond his musical career, “Better Man” emphasizes Williams inner demons: his struggles with depression, feeling of inadequacy, and his desperate need for his father’s love. These elements lead to Williams near downfall due to alcoholism and drug addiction.
If you’ve read any of my prior reviews about stories of addiction, you may know that due to my father’s alcoholism, I have little sympathy for addicts. Despite that, because of the high of the first half, I really wanted to love “Better Man”.
But there came a point during the Knebworth Festival sequence where it became too much. Williams imagines a Burly Brawl in the mosh pit where he fights and violently slaughters other versions of himself. (It’s a more bloody the burly brawl between Neo and Smith in The Matrix Reloaded.)
Another issue is that the Better Man wraps up with a fairly quick redemption arc of Williams entering rehab with a montage of him apologizing to those he hurt. The film is 135 minutes and only 5 of those were rehab.
The movie ends with Williams inviting his father onstage at the Royal Albert Hall to sing “My Way”. This scene gives the father another unearned redemption after father abandoning his family years earlier. BTW, this event did not happen in real life.
Based on the first half, Better Man is one of the most creative movies I’ve seen from 2024. Although I didn’t hate the second half, the movie as a whole is disappointing.
Here’s a clip from the RockDJ number:

A police force which had to review more than 3,500 Clare’s Law applications has referred itself to the police watchdog over another failure it has identified in how they were handled.
It has emerged a number of women were physically harmed following failures relating to Clare’s Law applications at Wiltshire Police.
The law, which was introduced in England and Wales in 2014, allows police to disclose someone’s history of abusive behaviour to those who may be at risk from them.
In October, the force launched a review after a small number of applications were analysed and found to include failures to disclose information to those at risk from domestic violence.
The new failure is said to have happened late last year while the review only covers cases from April 2015 until August 2023.
The force said on Thursday that the review identified 25 failures in the service, with two of these failures resulting in non-fatal physical harm to two adult women.
A 26th failure relating to a common assault on an adult woman in late 2023 was identified on Friday, police confirmed.
Of the other failures, it is believed 11 are administrative ones and 12 are service failures, for example where information should have been disclosed or where inadequate research was undertaken.
One member of police staff is suspended from the force and is the subject of an independent investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) watchdog.
Chief Constable Catherine Roper said: “Yesterday, I updated our communities on the progress of our urgent review of 3,582 Clare’s Law applications.
“After this announcement was made, I was informed of an additional incident where a potential failure in our service towards the end of 2023 may have contributed to another person being harmed.
“This service failure relates to a Clare’s Law application made after the timeframe of the review (April 2015-August 2023).
“However, I can confirm that we have made an immediate referral into our Professional Standards Department, as per our policy, and we have also referred this matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
“Whilst it is crucial that we prioritise the support to the victim and preserve the integrity of both the ongoing criminal investigation and the conduct referrals we have now made, I can confirm that this was an incident of common assault against an adult female.
“From the moment our failures within the Clare’s Law scheme came to light, I vowed I would be wholly transparent and honest with our communities. That is why I wanted to update you on this latest failure as soon as I could.
“As ever, I will keep you fully informed of any additional issues connected to this matter.”
It means the force has now referred itself to the police watchdog five times over the failings.
Clare’s Law was created by Michael Brown following the death of his daughter Clare Wood, 36, from Yorkshire.
Ms Wood was murdered by her ex-boyfriend George Appleton in 2009. An inquest into her death revealed that Appleton had a history of violent behaviour against women, which Ms Wood was not informed of.
