MiniBrute 2 Cookbook 19 Meow

March 27, 2018: Seven years ago today, Corduroy Institute recorded our third song and the first to be ever made at the Bancroft Laboratory of Auditory Sciences. This piece would eventually become "Prayer," the third song on our first EP.

On that fortuitous occasion, W. Ruiz took his Electribe ES-1, Arturia Minibrute, and Boss RE-20 Space Echo to the B.L.A.S. where a Tascam 2488neo Portastudio multitrack recorder stood alongside S.A. Morin's Bass VI, Telecaster, effects pedals and drum pads. This session was characterized by layers of improvised music, much like our first two pieces. However, several unique developments set it apart from the first pair of meetings.

First, it would be the first time we wholly omitted a performance track from the final mixdown. The synthesizer part, which entailed W. Ruiz playing on the Minibrute proceeded by a Boss RE-20 Space Echo, was deemed unnecessary. This use of omission in the service of the song would become a key part of our songcraft method.

Second, the lyrics crafted that day were extensively edited before the final vocal performance took place. Some of the day's stanzas were excised and others altered later on. No other piece of music we have ever recorded was subjected to as many ex post facto lyrical edits as this.

Third, the March 27 vocals barely appear on the released track. Most were excised, and what remains was reversed and used as a textural element. The song's main vocals would not be recorded until June 25, 2018. This was a departure from the first two songs, all of which were finished in a day. This three-month hiatus foreshadowed the gaps between recordings which have characterized our latter work. 

Finally, the track used extensive muting of the Electribe ES-1 on the Tascam. This dynamics-enhancing technique continues to be relevant today. Our most recent album heavily employs this process, and we hope you continue to follow the compositional progress on our latest batch of songs. So my grown-up synthesizer is the Minibrute 2S. I've owned it for three years now, and it's a pretty straightforward and entry-level machine — an analog monosynth with nearly knob-per-function operation. Only the (admittedly complex) sequencer has anything close to menus. So you'd think I would know without thinking too hard how many LFOs the thing has. Two, right? They've each got waveform and speed knobs over there on the left side of the panel.

Well, three, I guess, really, because you can turn VCO2 into an LFO, there's a switch on that to turn its speed down to LFO range.

No, wait! It's five! Because two of the sequencer channels can be reassigned from "Velocity" and "Pressure" to be a number of other things, including several flavors of LFO. So if you set both of those to one of those, you've got five LFOs in total.

Whoops, I forgot that the AR envelope has looping. So if you set it to Trigger mode and Looping, it's suddenly an LFO too. It's not the same kind of LFO as the others — you set the wave shape and frequency by adjusting the attack and release sliders, like the rise and fall knobs on a Maths or Sigma — but it's definitely an LFO.

So as long as you only need one VCO, don't use the AR as an envelope, and don't need to record Velocity and Pressure in your sequence, you can get six distinct LFOs controlling various parameters of your synth voice, and that's before hooking up external devices, because the three LFOs of my Eurorack system (one dedicated LFO and two Sigma function generators) could hook into it as well. I'm not sure why I hadn't quite put all that together earlier; I've been focused on the Eurorack gear lately, so maybe that's it.

Oh, and you know how I've mentioned that the Sigma modules don't have independent rise and fall CV inputs? The Minibrute 2S AR envelope does. And with four of those LFOs having random/sample&hold-like modes, it might be a better platform for Krell music. I'll have to experiment, but...

Now that the most recent gig is in the can, time for a bit more exporation into some new additions- so, a bit of a modular synth geek post follows

This patch is digging deeper into the Noise Engineering Gamut Repitor- a really fab module that feels a bit like it was built for me

In this patch, that's handling all of the melodic lines, it's in Rhythm Mode, so it's doing some interesting things with the triggers

Voices here are a BIA, Spectraphon with a QPAS from Make Noise, and Braids- drums are from a BitBox Micro from 1010 Music sequenced by an Acid Rain Constellation while bass is from an Arturia MiniBrute 2S, all mixed live in Bitwig

Tons of depth with all of these, look forward to digging in further

Solitary minibrute. continued denial of the fact I do not own a drum machine. Turning this thing into a groove box feels noble in its minimalism, which I suppose is the Second most alluring thing about hardware synths in the first place (the First being ooough cool knobs and blinky light)

The patch here is just four — well, three and a half — oscillators: A sine from the 3320 filter's self-oscillation, a saw from the 3340, a square an octave down from that made from running the 3340 square through a ÷2 clock divider, and a supersaw from Brains/Plaits. Chaos/Marbles is very slightly animating the Timbre of the supersaw and the amplitude of everything but the sine. I'm tempted to pull out my Minibrute 2S and mix in its two oscillators, or maybe try to hand-tune up and include the Sigma function generators, but I'm enjoying what I've got already.
