 MONUMENTAL MOMENT

This week’s Torah portion, Vayera, contains the Akeida (binding of Isaac), one of the most dramatic episodes in the entire Hebrew Bible. God instructs Abraham to go up to Mount Moriah and sacrifice his beloved son Isaac, and with pure dedication to his Creator Abraham sets out to fulfill this most painful command. It is impossible to imagine what Abraham must be feeling as he binds his son upon the altar and raises the knife to slit the neck of his adored progeny. 

At that very instant, a voice from the heavens tells Abraham, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad nor do anything to him for now I know you are a God-fearing man, since you have not withheld your son, your only one from me.” (Gen. 22:12). Abraham has passed his most difficult test of faith in the defining moment of the Jewish people until this day. God then blesses Abraham that he and his descendants will be “as numerous as the stars of heaven and the sands on the seashore; and your descendants shall seize the gates of their foes. All the nations shall bless themselves by your descendants, because you have obeyed My command." (Gen. 22:17-18)

What a dramatic tale of self-sacrifice, spiritual elevation, and communion with the Divine! Oddly, this monumental episode appears to end on an anti-climactic note: “Abraham returned to his servants, and they stood up and went together to Beer Sheva.” (Gen. 22:19) Why such a mundane conclusion to this extraordinary story? Rabbi Samson Rafael Hirsch (1808-1888) teaches that these seemingly redundant words contain the most important message of the entire parsha. Despite experiencing a mind-blowing encounter with God and receiving a beautiful blessing, Abraham doesn’t keep himself distant from those on a lower spiritual level. He walks alongside his servants and his wayward son Ishmael. He stays humble. Rabbi Dovid Sipper writes, “Abraham taught us that true greatness is all about reaching for the stars while remaining in heart and mind with those around us.”

In 2017, the Trump administration significantly rolled back public land protections and threatened to open cherished spaces to drilling, mining, and industrial use. 

We don’t yet know what this second term will mean for our wild places and green spaces. But we don’t need to guess where certain members of Congress stand. Some want to sell federal public lands to their respective states to be leased for destructive development. Others want to cut the Land and Water Conservation Fund, hurting our ability to protect national forests, seashores, and wildlife refuges. We must be ready for these attacks on our national parks, monuments, and public lands. 

You can get started right now by urging Congress to stand strong and protect our national monuments.

Below, you’ll find our 2025 roadmap to defend what we’ve built together so that we can secure the future of our country’s parks, iconic national monuments, and precious green spaces.

1. Protect National Monuments 

Many iconic national parks we know and love—such as Grand Canyon and Arches—were first protected as national monuments through the Antiquities Act.

Yet despite our love for these special places, our national monuments and public lands face significant threats. During the last Trump administration, Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments lost protections, opening these iconic landscapes to long-term development, habitat loss, and the desecration of cultural sites and historic artifacts. 

This cannot happen again. We must protect our country’s most precious places today, or we risk losing the irreplaceable.  

Urge your members of Congress to safeguard the Antiquities Act and fight back against attacks on our national monuments.  

2. Save America’s Forests 

Forests are vital for clean air, water, and biodiversity. Yet they face significant challenges, including severe wildfires, drought stress, reckless development, and more. We must protect our forests through reforestation efforts, good forest management techniques, and climate change mitigation. 

We are working in communities nationwide to protect our forests, but more needs to be done. Urge Congress to protect funding for the Community Forest and Open Space Conservation Program, which will help communities protect and manage local forests sustainably. 

3. Safeguard Critical Climate Investments 

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 is one of America’s most comprehensive climate change laws. It invests in climate-smart agriculture and natural climate solutions, such as planting millions of trees crucial to reducing heat and absorbing stormwater in areas most impacted by extreme weather.  

In 2023, with your help, we thwarted a deceptive attempt to repeal the act. But with changes on the horizon, we must stay vigilant and ensure this doesn’t happen again.  

Your voice is crucial to safeguarding this critical funding. Tell lawmakers to oppose any cuts or rollbacks to the IRA. 

4. Transform Asphalt Playgrounds into Green Space for Kids 

Every child deserves to play outside in a safe, welcoming environment. Yet millions of kids attend schools with asphalt landscapes for recess—with no trees for shade or engaging areas to play and learn. That’s why we’re working to transform schoolyards from blacktops into vibrant community play spaces—filled with trees, gardens, outdoor classrooms, and innovative play areas that benefit children's education and health.

second day, we went to visited uncle's house when we arrived at our uncle's house we ate the food that had been served by my grandma. I'm proud of my grandma even though she is sick can still provide delicious food. And then, dad said to us he once worked as a radio broadcaster in RRI. We returned home past father's office we stopped briefly because daddy wants to see where daddy works

third day, we went to aceh tsunami museum.this history of The Aceh Tsunami Museum is a museum to commemorate the tsunami of the maha daysat which struck Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam on December 26, 2008, which claimed approximately 240,000 people. Then we move not far from the aceh tsunami museum, namely this history of the Floating PLTD monument  The excitement of the tsunami wave that hit the northern coast of Banda Aceh in December 2004 turned out to still leave a trail. Not only is it still imagined in memory, the tsunami also left a trail in the form of a monument.

 fifth day, we went to Ie Suum (hot water) become a vacation spot while refreshing. This tourist attraction travels around 30 minutes to get to the destination. The road that goes up and down, changes like the number 8 doesn't seem to dampen our enthusiasm to get to the destination.    sixth day,our family was picked up by my father's friend to stay at my father's friend's house so that the next day the way was planned go to takengon. today our family went to black beach which is amazing. We can play sand, air, and picnic together. And then, we visited my grandma at village of brabo.

       seventh day, our family went from Sigli to Takengon to spend 4 hours 21 minutes to get to the destination. Our first trip from Sigli through Bireuen 2 hours 2 minutes when we arrived, we looked for food because we were very hungry after we eat. we went on a very tiring journey. Finally on my way to Takengon my younger brother saw durians on each trip so we stopped by to buy durian on the roadside and we stopped Mosque because the road we passed was very traffic jump. Then we continued the journey back when we arrived at Takengon that night we stopped by the mosque to pray while we searched for food and lodging. Finally we got lodging that was very beautiful.

CTS A Week 2 - Collaborative Skills

From today’s activities, my group has focused on showcasing an old Singaporean history called “Hang Nadim & the attack of the Swordfish”. While diving deeper into the history, my group has found out about how Hang Nadim seeks a plan of suggesting banana tree trunks as a barricade along the seashore to protect the villagers from getting harmed by the swordfishes. In my role as a collaborator, my strength would be contributing to ideas in a collaboration. I’ve contributed by providing concise pointers of the historical background of “Hang Nadim & the attack of the Swordfish” and suggested how we incorporate the key elements of the boy, Hang Nadim, swordfishes and banana tree trunks as the focus of the monument. My weaknesses would be coordinating with my group members. As someone who is an individualist and perfectionist at times, it can be difficult for me to empathise with my group members with different methods and approaches. Throughout the group work (image 1) , I am able to see myself balancing my personal ideas with the group’s objectives. If I had unlimited time and budget (image 2), a central life-sized sculpture of Hang Nadim in a defensive pose, with his arm outstretched, surrounded by swordfish positioned mid-motion to convey their threat. Banana tree trunks would be arranged to recreate the barricade from the story. It creates a striking and intriguing monument that honours the story of Hang Nadim.

An Nahl surveys the meaning of that insight. This it does by comparing various natural phenomena and landmarks with achievements within the human mind and externally in civil societies.
