Monica Moorehead: The Revolutionary Black Woman Running for U.S. President
Interview by Sankofa Brown
Monica Moorehead: I am a 64-year-old Black woman who was born under segregation in Alabama. My parents, who were professors at Alabama State, a historically Black University, participated in the historic Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955-56, driving Black people to and from work. I became political as a teenager in Hampton, Virginia when I was kicked out of the band at a predominantly white school, for refusing to play the school’s theme song, “Dixie”, the anthem of the Confederacy. I first met with the Workers World Party (WWP) in the early 1970s while attending Hampton Institute (now University), another HBCU, as a supporter of political prisoners like George Jackson. I helped to distribute the Black Panther Party newspaper on the weekends.
It was WWP’s strong stance on fighting racism and national oppression that helped to broaden my political views that white supremacy along with many other oppressions are rooted and nurtured within imperialism, the worldwide system of capitalism. I have been mainly involved in fighting racism including defending Joann Little, a Black woman who was acquitted for killing a white guard who attempted to rape her in prison; fighting for the freedom of political prisoner, Mumia Abu-Jamal in Pennsylvania. I helped to found the U.S. Out of Southern Africa Network in the mid-1980s to demand that U.S. corporations get out of apartheid South Africa and to build solidarity with the African National Congress, Congress of South Africa Trade Unions and other allies.
Our platform is based on a number of principles: showing solidarity with workers and oppressed peoples here and worldwide who are engaged in struggles, big and small, against all forms of capitalist oppression, whether we agree with the ideas of the leaders or not. It is important for revolutionaries and activists to oppose their own imperialist governments in order to weaken those governments. The workers inside imperialist countries have more in common with other workers in developing countries. Ultimately, our goal is to influence as much of the working class as possible inside the U.S. to fight for revolutionary socialism.

EMERGENCY ALERT! SOLIDARITY WITH STANDING ROCK URGENTLY NEEDED!
DEFEND THE #NoDAPL DAKOTA ACCESS PIPELINE RESISTANCE!
Moorehead/Lilly Election Campaign to Send Delegation
On Friday, September 9, the Moorehead/Lilly Presidential Campaign of Workers World Party will send a delegation to North Dakota to show their unconditional solidarity with this struggle. Presidential candidate Monica Moorehead said, “This struggle is not only an environmental struggle, important as that is. At its core, this is a struggle for national sovereignty of one of the hundreds of oppressed Native Nations in this hemisphere. Indigenous people have every right to veto any pipelines or other developments on their lands or in their waters. We want to demonstrate in every possible way that, to us, Black and Indigenous Lives Matter.”
The delegation will bring tents, food, water and other items to donate to the camp.“This is not a one-time thing for us,” said Lamont Lilly, WWP's vice presidential candidate who is leading the delegation. “We have Indigenous and other members who have been supporting this struggle for some time now, and we plan to organize ongoing activities in support of this heroic and inspiring struggle, including mobilizing other delegations. On September 24, we will raise the struggle of Standing Rock at our Hard Times Are Fighting Times conference in Durham, N.C. to bring this struggle to the South.”
Election Campaign Manager Teresa Gutierrez said, “Standing Rock is our Bolivia. When the Indigenous people of Bolivia stood up to defend their water and land, the world took note, inspiring millions of people to fight back against corporate greed. Standing Rock is doing the same right here in the belly of the beast.”

Let the White House know where you stand on the Dakota access pipeline and sign this petition: tinyurl.com/jdganm4
Since April, heroic Water Protectors from Standing Rock and others from the Oceti Sakowin (Great Sioux Nation) have been attempting to stop the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, part of the Bakken Pipeline. The DAP is scheduled to be built under the Missouri, Mississippi and Big Sioux rivers in violation of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's rights as an Indigenous Nation as well as presenting a danger to the drinking water of millions of people in the region.
Thousands of people from scores of Indigenous nations as well as many non-Native supporters have since poured into the area to join the encampments in North Dakota and block the construction. Native youth walked more than 1500 miles to the White House this summer to try to bring attention to this struggle.
Despite violent police-orchestrated terror, including arrests, private security goons and the use of attack dogs, the peaceful resistance led by Indigenous people has only grown stronger, sparking national and international support. Governor Jack Dalrymple has now called in the National Guard. This ongoing military escalation is outrageous. Anyone with a shred of decency or awareness of the ongoing genocide of Indigenous Peoples is already inflamed by the government's efforts to combat the Water Protectors and let Big Oil corporations roll through Native land.
We urge people everywhere to stand with Standing Rock as they carry out a courageous and necessary struggle to protect the land and the water from poisonous oil pipelines. We agree completely that "Mni Wiconi. Water Is Life."

When Bernie Sanders ended his presidential campaign by endorsing Hillary Clinton, millions of progressive people in the U.S. were left to ask, “Who could I possibly support now?” As the Republican and Democratic Parties end their conventions with all the appearance of fascism on the horizon, do progressives vote for Clinton out of fear of a Trump victory?
We have another option. Join the movement for revolutionary socialism with our Workers World Party candidates, Monica Moorehead for President and Lamont Lilly for Vice President. The oppressed and workers deserve our own candidates - Vote #Socalists4BlackLives |vote4socialism.org @Monica Moorehead & Lamont Lilly 2016
No to racist Trump, no to warmonger Clinton! Vote #Socialists4BlackLives: abolish capitalism, disarm ICE and the police, smash racism, defend #BlackLivesMatter, and join the struggle for a revolutionary socialist future! vote4socialism.org @Monica Moorehead & Lamont Lilly 2016
It’s likely that millions will vote for a progressive third party this year. No doubt, a progressive third party would be a historic step forward for the class struggle in the U.S. Many other third-party campaigns have been popular in the past, yet often their long-term vision of revolutionary change has been limited.
We believe that we need a revolution — a transformation of the economy, the political system, and all of society, where workers and communities control their future. While building an electoral third party is helpful, building a revolutionary organization, working with broad social movements and guided by a clear perspective to bring on that revolution, is fundamentally more powerful. Join us! Vote #Socalists4BlackLives | vote4socialism.org @Monica Moorehead & Lamont Lilly 2016
Defend #BlackLivesMatter movement! End the police war on Black & Brown people! Stop the raids and deportations -- disarm ICE and the police! End the attacks on LGBTQ people and women! A Trump victory gives a further green light to the forces of racism and repression, both inside and outside the capitalist state. The movement has to prepare for more unbridled police terror and mass deportations.
A movement whose goal is to organize for revolutionary change is desperately needed so we can move a progressive agenda for the people and not Wall Street.
On Jan. 20, the first massive response to this deplorable election will take place at a major counter-inaugural demonstration in Washington, DC.

As members of the working class, it’s so important that we vote intelligently, with our own hearts and minds. This “lesser of two evils” narrative is old and played out now. People know damn well that neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton represent the interests of poor, Black, Brown or working people. Voting for Socialist candidates isn’t just a “protest vote.” It’s an expression that some better is very possible. It’s a refusal to go along with what the ruling class is trying to force feed us.

Victory to the HUDS workers of Local 26 on strike!
The Monica Moorehead & Lamont Lilly 2016 Presidential Campaign is proud to stand in solidarity with our sisters and brothers at Harvard who lovingly cook and feed the world’s people there.
Harvard University’s endowment of $38 billion puts this corporation at the top of the wealthy Ivy Leagues, a larger treasury than many countries. With giants of finance capital like Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and Citigroup writing its contract proposals and titans of the U.S. military, diplomatic, economic and technocratic corps running its Kennedy School of Government, Harvard’s plan to attack its food service workers’ health insurance while keeping wages for many below $35K per year is clearly a political policy of austerity aimed at the whole of the U.S. and international working class.
