Y'know, one thing I really appreciated about the Scott Polar Research Institute was the emphasis placed on Inuit culture and knowledge.
There's a large section of the space devoted to Inuit artworks and artefacts, and it's the very first one you see as you enter the building proper. You can't miss it!
They also currently have an exhibition called 'Hidden Histories' which comprises additional labelling throughout the museum focusing on the skills and contributions of specific members of the wider Inuit community, as well as female figures in polar history and notable individuals like Matthew Henson.
I do think this could and should be expanded upon and pushed further in future - in some places it provides fascinating additional context for the items on display, but in others comes off a wee bit more like an afterthought.
Nevertheless, it's a fantastic start that I noted and very much appreciated!
#I feel incredibly strongly about intersectionality and accessibility within history heritage and culture in general#What's the point in having this sort of stuff if you just lock it away so no one ever gets to see it and learn from it?#What's the point of any of it unless every person gets the chance to see themselves and their history reflected in heritage spaces?#I've devoted my whole practice as a conservator to that principal#And I appreciate any and all effort made towards it by others#I don't know how qualified I am to speak on the subject of curation and exhibition design specifically#But I flatter myself in saying I know more about this sort of stuff than some do#And again I say SPRI your efforts are appreciated#SPRI#Scott Polar Research Institute#History#Historic Context#Historic Artefacts

#artswin#quick sketch up#idk#tsp#tspud#crowscrowscrows#crowsx3#the stanley parable#stanley parable#the stanley parable ultra deluxe#ik im probably not the first one to come up with this but i have an idea for smth so i wanted to make a vague idea for a design first#my current idea rn is that. at least for my au. since theres three crows. there needs to be three sort of proctors for the game#and since proctors are people who oversee exams/officer with responsibility at a school#what im thinking is that narrator and curator are both proctors who “oversee”/“admin the game" (according to oxford)#or “one who is emploied to manage to affairs of another”/“person who takes charge of or acts for another” according to wikipedia#they both at least have control over the game (ie. narrator writing the script n stuff/curators museum etc)#but they need a third.#in 2013 tsp 432 goes missing. sees that the wheel needs to keep turning#the crows see him understanding the situation. and how he wants to keep the game going. so they appoint him as another proctor#thus timekeeper. who gets added on to manage the settings and time in ultra deluxe#i have more to say but idk just yet sdkjfhskdf#i feel nervous just bc idk if im stealing someones idea or concept for this. or even getting it wrong even if its just an interpretation#maybe later ill explain idk sdkjfkjsf

#character design#art#Ciara Kil#Naomi Kil#you know what's fucked up? never heard the name ciara until a few months ago. it's pronounced with a hard c. like keera. that's fucked up#anyway her name isn't pronounced like that cause i said so. it's a soft c and you pronounce the i. see-are-ah#hard-c ciara doesn't fit her. soft-c ciara does. it's fantasy i do what i want. i makea the rules#anyway. needless to say im in love with them both#naomi especially im sorryyy she's so intricate. she's got so much little shit going on I heart her crazy style#shes very good at Doing Things Right but it is an active choice to do so. unlike Ciara who is just really naturally personable and likeable#and so even when she's a bit unkempt or pushy. she gets away with a lot because she's so damn easy to like#wheras naomi is A Choice. she Is Right not because she's likeable but because she puts effort into it#shes obsessed with her image (who else does that sound like? almost like they're products of the same environment or something)#shes Neat and Put Together and very formal. very traditional#and not just because of that but not helped by it she's very distant. just enough to be noticeable but not enough to alienate her#because since she's so curated elsewhere. everyone she's distant to assume that they're just not privy to whatever else is going on#they assume that SOMEONE is. and that someone just isnt them because they arent good enough. naomi has a way of putting herself in a place#where she is an unattainable goal. and that's all in her pursuit of Doing Things Right#i could talk about her for hours also. fucking love naomi#naomi and ciara and julian are all fun because they're all. Instagram is a deeply, darkly depressing place, but I did learn I've been purling upside down for how I knit and now my sock heels look beautiful, so there is that.

As someone who doesn’t use Twitter and hasn’t used it since 2016, at this point I feel like every even slightly Twitter-esque (let alone overt Twitter-esque) design choice Tumblr makes gets yelled about because People Really Just Fucking Hate Twitter whether they realise it or not.
Which, like. Fair ‘nuff. I also hate Twitter, which is why I don’t use it. But nobody ever really gives these design decisions any time to percolate on this site in favour of kneejerk “they changed it and we hate it” reaction. Public likes are not new. Multiple tabs on a dashboard (some of them not things you opted into seeing) are not new. Having to block ads with external tools is not new (and it’s a big deal that photomatt said the words “ad blocker”, like, you couldn’t get that shit on any other profit-driven site, everyone is too scared for their precious monetisation)
The new sidebar, also, I think is pretty ugly right now but it’s probably going to go through a few iterations. I, personally, really wish they’d put the search bar literally anywhere else (maybe group search and discovery together IDK I’m not an UX designer) and I think accessing sideblogs has been too complicated for a while now, but none of those are the same as “this looks like The Other Blue Site”.
Like I’m not a graphic designer. I am certainly not a fucking UX designer, and I think those people are either all nuts or all geniuses. I’m pretty sure the new layout is being extensively heatmapped rn, and what changes it’ll undergo are gonna be done based on that, based on comments that are along the lines of ‘this change would make me more productive’ and less on “WEEEEEH CHANGE IT BACK CHANGE IT BACK CHANGE IT BACK”.
Your animosity towards change is not meaningful user experience information. You misclicking on shit more *is*. If this layout is really *that* bad and terrible, Automattic’s research tools will demonstrate it as such. The developers now are actually much better versed in Web 2.0 design, for better and for worse.
#van stuff#Also like yes I also hate the touchscreenification of desktop sites#as someone who does not have and does not want a touch screen computer#but that's not a design trend I get to dictate as I am in fact a minority user for this site#and the complaints I am tired of seeing are also coming from other legacy minority users of desktop#There are many good UX reasons to opt for a vertical layout instead of a horizontal one#and I think the majority reason is so that people who are on mobile and desktop simultaneously don't have to have two different brainmaps#for their muscle memory on this site#but like... the vertical sidebar is not the same as 'randomly swapping 'Close' and 'Post'' lol#the top of the screen horizontal bar still does things and there's way less empty space there now#and I get wanting negative space and less screen clutter#like... that's the ONE criticism of this update I can agree with#but that's STILL NOT THE SAME as 'arbitrarily fucking over the muscle memory of EVERY site user'#how many people on this site *ever* move out of their dashboard? I know I do!#but I think it's the minority of people considering the user-curated model of propagation this site is still#*actively* promoting#This site looking superficially more like twitter doesn't change that!#like the sky is not falling call me when they eliminate the ability to browse the tags in favour of a flat search#AGAIN#remember when we had that? Remember how *BAD* it was?#remember how much easier finding stuff became when we got 'browse tags' back as the default search?

y'all, most of my tumblr is a time capsule from 2016 and earlier. A lot's happened since then. Changed continents, changed careers, got psychotherapy and then physical therapy. My corner of fandom was pretty much exclusively on Plurk, and not even consistently
then the OPLA happened, and it got me in a chokehold. I'd been back on my OP bullshit for over a couple years now, so it was kind of inevitable
But now I crave discussions and community and gushing over faves 💔 at the same time, fan communities feel so fragmented in the post-LJ era. it's hard to find like-minded people, but I'm doin' my best!!
#probably better to have more channels than none. but everything feels so curated; so you can easily end up in an echo chamber you know??#when tumblr launched in 2007...pretty sure I made a diff account and then promptly forgot about it#now that username is lost to time#it just felt too much like shouting into into the wind#instead of having a conversation with someone#which just felt more lonely and disconnected in my mind#plus I'm pretty “meh” toward social media in general#because stuff like infinite scrolling and For You sections are designed to hold your attention for longer than is healthy :(#but now I'm kinda out of the loop for social media ettiquette#and it feels a bit like learning to read social cues in a foreign country lol#ah well! here i am :>

i've been writing a lot in english lately and it has made me realise more than ever how funny my experiences learning the language were
#until recently i attended a non english-speaking school but in my country (as in many others) english is a mandatory subject#and listen i was not a particularly outstanding student in general but i thrived during writing practices#my teacher was always very complimentary of my work and i became like. the designated english friend#went to competitions etc#but i never had the heart to tell anyone that a good chunk of my familiarity with the cadence and structure of the language#came from reading fanfiction on wattpad & ao3......#rsmc.yaps#obviously there are pitfalls to this learning method but i feel like there is something to be said#about curating your learning experience so that you are actually excited to engage with it#and once you ease yourself into this rhythm of interacting with the language you can branch out into more 'professional' media#with that comfortable foundation#ofc i myself still have so much more to learn but i'm having a great time along the way
