Moss-powered Wifi Jammer
Im putting up some older projects here while my website is being rebuilt, this one is from spring 2015.
Tumblr media
The Moss-powered Wifi Jammer, a part of my design project for Manu Collado and Nacho Martin in Inter11 at the AA 2014-15.
Tumblr media
Manual for making the moss-powered wifi jammer.
The technology is based on the moss-powered radio by designer Fabienne Felder and professor Paolo Bombelli at University of Cambridge, which also helped me in making a prototype.
Tumblr media
Detail of the AV transmitters used for creating interference in the 2.4GHz spectrum.
The initial idea was to make the wifi jammer as a necklace, this was not possible to make a prototype of due to the fragility of the hydrogen electrodes used. I instead made a conceptual prototype of the technology (shown above) and separate prototype of the necklace (shown below).
Tumblr media
The brief for the unit was to design a piece of digital jewellery - or wearable technology. Instead I designed a piece of wearable anti-technology, jewellery for the modern luddite and a digital molotov cocktail - ready to create havoc at a Starbucks near you.

In today’s inexorably connected world a disconnected spot acts as a “safe-space” for those of us who wish to remain free from Facebook’s geo-advertising and NSA’s eavesdropping. To be able to grasp the interconnectivity of our time we need to be able to take a step back and disconnect, not only from the internet but also from the power grid, the water mains and all other networks that we take for granted. Moss does not need anything else than sunshine and moist air to grow, and with aided by our technology it is possible to harvest excess electricity from its photosynthesis. The electricity fuels a Wifi-jammer that creates a shield of interference in a 15 m radius around the necklace.
