"The Valide Sultan’s seat of authority was often placed near the window or in a prominent corner of her chamber, where light illuminated her figure, further emphasizing her elevated status as the mother of the Sultan and the head of the imperial household." - Ottoman Women in Public Space, Madeline C. November November & December are Minor Ladies Months!
For the month of November, fymagnificentwomen would like to spotlight some of the less-celebrated women of Muhteşem Yüzyıl and Kösem, encouraging content that features characters with minor, guest, or supporting roles in the drama.
Who qualifies as a minor female character? For the sake of clarity, we’ll define minor ladies as those who are either not titled ‘Sultan’, or those who are but not listed in or directly after the opening credits. (An incomplete list of characters may be found below; questions concerning eligibility may be directed to the askbox).
Below is the list of some characters that you may use (for inspiration):
Sultanas and Imperial Mothers: Ayşe Hümaşah, Ayşe [mother of Nergisşah], Beyhan, Esmahan, Fatma, Nazenin, Nergisşah, Rana; Ayşe [daughter of Kösem], Fatma [daughter of Kösem], Hanzade, Hatice Muazzez, Kaya, Saliha Dilaşub.
Cariyes and Favorites: Ahsen, Ayşe [season 1], Cihan, Dilşah, Efsun, Elif, Esma, Firuze, Gülbahar (Olivia), Gülezar, Gülnihal, Helena, Nadia, Nazlı, Nilüfer, Nurbahar, Olga, Rümeysa, Sadika; Afitap, Elanur, Eycan, Firdevs, Gülbahar’s Girl Squad, Katerina, Mahfiruz, Nihan, Sanavber, Şayeste, Şivekar, Yasemin.
Palace Staff: Afife, Canfeda, Daye, Fahriye (Diana), Fidan, Gülfem, Gülşah, Gülşan, Melek, Nigar, Rakel; Cennet, Dudu, Ester Kira, Gölge, Lalezar, Madame Marguerite, Meleki, Menekşe, Narin.
Beyond the Palace: Anna Jagiellon, Armin, Aybige, Cehver, Eftalya, Elenika, Esmanur, Gabriela Sfenzi de Feo, Gracia Mendes Nasi, Isabella Fortuna, Isabella Sforza Szapolyai, Monica Gritti, Rita, Saliha, Silvia, Zeynep; Akile, Catherine of Brandenburg, Falcı, Kalika.
Content featuring relationships with major female or male characters is welcome, permitting there is equal focus on the minor character.
Finally, don’t forget to use the tag #minorladiesmonth to share your creations as part of this month’s event!

GET TO KNOW ME[ME] → FAVOURITE SCENE (4)
this scene got me into magnificent century, no joke. it was randomly recommended to me on youtube, and I clicked, and I was hypnotised. even without the meaning I now know it has, the way it was structured, the escalation, the beauty, the power in meryem's performance and the impudent rage in selma's, the horrified awe of everybody else, it is perfect. and now, there's the added bonus of knowing this was the moment where hurrem finally stopped playing nice. knowing her worth, standing up for herself, unafraid and having fully embraced the fight she had been dragged into. the hand-catch, the sarcastic little curtsey, the way she opens the doors to see everybody staring, and then walks off without a word like a BOSS. sheer perfection.

Rewatching the Murad era of Muhtesem Yuzyil: Kosem sure hits different now that I've obsessed about Alicent and Aegon's mother-son relationship a 100 different ways. Unfortunately, my baby Alicent is not the iron-fisted force of nature Kosem is, and Murad shares Aegon's impulsive brashness but his decisions pan out better. The mother-son dynamic though, and the fact that both mothers outlived the sons...plus, judging by the S2 trailer, just like Murad, Aegon is going to make a habit of not heeding the woman who enthroned him.
Sons as their mother's sword arm except the blade is poisoned, URGH!!!!

"Throughout history, hairdressing has been an intimate, almost ritualistic activity shared between women, whether in African braiding traditions, European court styles, or among women preparing for celebrations. The act of doing another woman’s hair binds them in a unique, nonverbal closeness." - Femininity, Susan Brownmiller (1984)

Period dramas dresses tournament: Blue dresses Round 2- Group D: Rosaline, Love's labour's lost vs Kosem sultan, Muhtesem yuzyil Kosem (in second gif of this gifset)
Propagandas (written by submitters)
For Rosaline's dress: More pics

For Kosem's dress: Probably one of her best looks overall, it appears in one of her scenes doing charity and walking in front of the folk. I love that, even when you can tell it's a very rich gown that makes her shine and contrast with the others' simple costumes, the garden theme of her character is present via the lot of white flowers. That way, the cape opening creates this beautiful effect of the gown being a road of flowers and highlights her role as a source of connection between the palace and the common people.

GET TO KNOW ME[ME] → FAVOURITE RIVALRY (5)
nurbanu sweep! I almost picked safiye vs kosem, but while editing I ended up thinking nurbanu vs hurrem feels like the more fleshed out precursor. it's the young against the establishment, wherein nurbanu takes the role hurrem once had as the bellicose innovator for the sake of her love and children. in the same way hurrem was willing to have mustafa killed to protect her Mehmed, nurbanu helped orchestrate bayezid's death to protect her Murad, and in the same way she was demonised by the incumbent powers of the harem, so was nurbanu. she was the only challenger to ever 'beat' hurrem and live to tell the tale, and that was because in many ways she was hurrem. thank you for asking!
