3D microscopy: New multipurpose AI software for cell-tracking

- By Nagoya City University -
In modern life science research as well as in drug discovery, recording and analyzing the images of cells over time using 3D microscopy has become extremely important. Once the images have been recorded, the same cell in different images at different time points has to be accurately identified ("cell tracking") because the living cells captured in the images are in motion. However, tracking many cells automatically in 3D microscope videos has been considerably difficult.
In the Kimura laboratory at Nagoya City University (Japan), Dr. Chentao Wen and colleagues developed the first AI-based software called 3DeeCellTracker that can run on a desktop PC and automatically track cells in 3D microscope videos.
Using the software, they were able to measure and analyze the activities of ~100 cells in the brain of a moving microscopic worm, in a naturally beating heart of a young small fish, and ~1000 cancer cells cultured in 3D under laboratory conditions, which were recorded with different types of cutting-edge microscope systems.
This versatile software can now be used across biology, medical research, and drug development to help monitor cell activities.

Image: Cells of various organisms are recorded as 3D videos with state-of-the-art microscope systems (top), the cells in 3D videos obtained are automatically tracked by the AI technology (middle), and the activity of each cell is measured and analyzed (bottom). Սիրելի հետևորդներ, տարածեք ինչքան կարող եք, խիստ կարևոր։

🔴 Ecocide Alert in Nagorno–Kharabakh region amidst war between Armenia & Azerbaijan
Dear Partner,
As you may be aware, on September 27th, 2020, full–blown war exploded between Armenia & Azerbaijan over Naghorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) with four ceasefire regimes negotiated under the umbrella of Minsk OSCE Group, violated during October, 2020.
During this large-scale war, the most intensive since the 1994 ceasefire agreement in the Southern Caucasus region, a number of war crimes were mounted & documented, among them beheadings of Armenian soldiers, killing of civilians in a city square wrapped in Armenian flags, deliberate attacks on
civilian infrastructures - residential buildings, churches, food markets, schools and maternity hospitals.
On October 30, 2020, the environmental community of Armenia, including local, regional & international environmental organizations, conservation pioneers, scientists and non-governmental organizations, was shocked to witness another disastrous war crime against natural ecosystems & crucial livelihoods of Artsakh.
As per credible reports & collected data, comprised by Human’s Right Defender of Armenia, Azerbaijani military forces have used white phosphorus munitions containing elements of chemical weapons in the primary forests of Artsakh, which is a gross violation of International Humanitarian Law, principles of Customary Law, Geneva Convention, Chemical Weapons Convention, Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Technique, as well as the provisions of the relevant UN conventions and documents. As video evidence shows, these weapons are being used in an
attempt to burn down forests where-civilians are taking shelter from Azerbaijan’s attacks.
The ongoing large-scale war seriously threatens the biodiversity of the region, which has been recognized
as one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. This region is well-known for its high rate of endemism and for being home to more than 6000 plant species, 153 species of mammals, 400 species of birds and other living organisms. Hundreds of plant and animal species found in Artsakh are listed both in the local Red Book and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species having a protection status at a global level.
Among them are the critically endangered Persian (Caucasian) Leopard, known to migrate through Mrav ridge of Armenia & Artsakh towards the Iranian border, as well as to Azerbaijan and vice versa, which is a rare species with declining numbers protected at a regional & global level.
Furthermore, Armenia & Artsakh are known for their primary forests, which are amongst the most biodiverse forests in the region. Not only do these forests play a major role in preserving favorable environmental conditions for sustainable development, but local people are heavily dependent on these forests for their livelihoods. Traditional forest-related knowledge accumulated over thousands of years is deeply linked with the cultures of indigenous people living in Artsakh.
The usage of white phosphorus munitions by Azerbaijani forces in those forests will not only destroy valuable ecosystems & habitats and put threatened species at the risk of extinction, but will contaminate rivers & underground waters for years, thus turning into a major threat of regional scale for all the people and wildlife living in the region.
We are therefore calling out to the global conservation community for support to help stop the usage of white phosphorus munitions before they cause an environmental disaster and regional ecocide.
The usage of white phosphorus munitions contradicts to all the provisions of all environmental conventions including the Bern Convention, Nagoya protocol to Helsinki & Rotterdam conventions, verified by the Governments of both Armenia & Azerbaijan.
Although 98% of the global population live under the protection of the Chemical Weapons Convention, this
is, as we understand, unfortunately not applicable towards Armenia & ethnic Armenians living in Artsakh.
Ongoing developments continue to threaten any form of life in the region and thus we’re addressing you, as a leading environmental organization in the field, to:
● Write to appropriate contacts & conservation partners in your network to express your concern of the possible environmental destruction in Artsakh and the region
● Raise awareness within your networks/social channels and:
● Condemn the actions of any military force that uses white phosphorus munitions in forests & habitats destroying crucial ecosystems and therefore forbidden under international law.
● Call for responsibility to protect valuable ecosystems, species populations & genetic resources from ecocide in Artsakh.
● Call for moral responsibility in a time of war and exclude war crimes both against humans and nature.
Please kindly inform us, the undersigned, about actions undertaken by your organization advocating for sustainable development & environmental resilience, and further steps aimed at eliminating the risk of the ecocide in Artsakh region, which is a crucial habitat to threatened species & populations not recognizing political borders and/or regional disputes.

The catchphrase for the final season is "Who will survive this battlefield, enemies or allies?"
In the final season of the well-received Attack on Titan event series, participants become members of The Survey Corps to confront the five Titans in cooperation with Levi and Mikasa. Amidst the tension that the Titans are approaching, the storyline of battles against the 'enemy' with each other's beliefs and survival at stake will transport the participant to the world of Attack on Titan.
The key to this game is a map. Participants use items to actually assemble a diorama map of the city of Marley, where the battle takes place. Planning a strategy to defuse the situation using the map they have assembled is the key element that will make the difference between success and failure in escaping. The maximum number of participants in each team is six.

December Hot List: 4 new hotels to have on your radar
Winter sun, midnight sun, alpine sun, or land of the rising sun? This month’s newest SLH members all offer an escape from reality and an opportunity to create some distance – physically, mentally and spiritually.
Amani Boutique Hotel, Zanzibar – Tanzania
Opens 2nd February 2021

Promoting a ‘tropical state of mind’, Amani Boutique Hotel in Zanzibar offers life through a lens of lush technicolour. The bright white of Paje Beach, ranked one of the top 30 island beaches in the world, the intense blues of the Indian Ocean and the fresh greens of the graceful palms are contrasted with cream and pale wood tones in the guest rooms. ‘Amani’ in Swahili means peace and the adagio tempo here allows guests to relax and regenerate – flitting between pool and ocean, ocean and pool by day and spending evenings sampling Zanzibari cuisine to the sound of the waves. Kick things up a notch, with perfect conditions for kitesurfing, scuba diving and dolphin spotting.
SLH Insider Tip: Explore Omani architecture, spice markets and labyrinth alleys with beautiful carved doorways in Zanzibar’s atmospheric and UNESCO-listed capital Stone Town.
Arctic Bath, Swedish Lapland – Sweden
Open between 21st November 2020 – 10th April 2021 for the winter season

Arctic Bath is in the village of Harads, a micro-destination for luxury travellers in an area often referred to as northern Europe’s ‘last wilderness’. The 12-room hotel floats during the summer and freezes into ice during the winter, and centres around a giant open-air ice bath ringed by three saunas, a spa treatment room and hot baths. Six individual ‘water’ cabins sleep two with overwater decks providing a perfect Northern Lights lookout in the winter and a place to take in the novelty of the midnight sun in the summer. Six larger ‘land’ cabins have been built on the shore, all with glass walls also offering first-class seats for these natural phenomena. The spa focuses around the benefits of a traditional Swedish wellness experience (sauna, hydrotherapy and cold bath), incorporating natural products from botanically-based Swedish skincare brand Kerstin Florian and honest nutrition that brings together nature and the elements.
SLH Insider Tip: Embrace the destination by indulging in a signature ‘Spa Ritual’, a socially distanced treatment that guests can enjoy at their own pace, a ‘Sauna Gauss’ where a spa therapist guides guests in the ice bath with breathing exercises, or venture outdoors on a moose-calling safari led by local guide Mikael Suorra.
Hotel Zur Goldenen Rose, Schnals – Italy

Tucked away in the monastic village of Certosa on the Italian-Austrian border, Hotel Zur Goldenen Rose’s location surrounded by mountains, glaciers and larch forests creates a real sense of serenity and harmony with the great outdoors. The free-spirited owners, Stefania and Paul Gruner, have created an inviting and informal hotel that encourages guests to bring everyday life ‘to a screeching halt’ – something that they do unobtrusively and on each guest’s terms. Local Tyrolean materials have been used to create a naturally-inspired environment, private terraces allow guests to enjoy the surrounding sights and sounds with seclusion, and food sourced almost entirely from the Val Senales is there to be savoured.
Outdoors explore the Senales Glacier (the film set for the movie Everest), climb the 3580m to the top of Hohe Wilde and visit Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson’s new art installation on nearby glacier Hochjochferner which invites visitors to see manmade climate change from wider planetary and glacial perspectives. Guests can also make the most of 40km of ski slopes, some on the glacier itself, accessed by 17 lifts. On return to the hotel, relax in the open-air sauna reached via a treetop walkway, reflect in Gloriette, a glass pavilion with an open fireplace, chill in the ice grotto hollowed out of Martell granite or indulge in a soothing GLACISSE treatment.
SLH Insider Tip: Book the new Penthouse Rose Suite to take advantage of a kitchenette, lounge area and large terrace complete with its own Finnish sauna. Junior Suites also have their own private saunas.
The Tower Hotel Nagoya, Nagoya – Japan
Opened 1st October 2020

Since 1954 the Nagoya TV Tower has been a symbol of this Japanese city and now it has been reimagined as a cutting-edge hotel. Nagoya itself is known as an industrial and creative hub (from traditional ceramics to being the HQ of Toyota) and The Tower Hotel Nagoya has fashioned a calm, collaborative space with art at its soul. Living-gallery interiors showcase Tokai pottery and modern Japanese craftsmanship, and guestrooms are individually decorated with paintings, photographs, videos and textiles from local artists alongside unusual structural steel components.
A different culinary experience is available on each floor – from open-air Farm& serving coffee and craft beers to Lily which overlooks neighbouring Central Park and Glycine (meaning wisteria) on the fourth floor which puts a modern spin on local specialities, produce and flavours. Outside the hotel explore the city’s history – is it said to be the home of both samurai and ninja culture and is home to many beautiful temples. Flip the switch and go futuristic at the Science Museum with the world’s largest planetarium dome (Brother Earth), Tornado Lab and -30° Deep Freeze Lab.
SLH Insider Tip: Located in the heart of Japan, Nagoya is superbly linked by the Shinkansen bullet train so makes an ideal stop-off between Toyko (1 hour 40 minutes) and Kyoto (35 minutes). Plan your hop-on hop-off Japanese itinerary here.

@totallynotasupercomputer: “How about Todoroki going full Endeavor because Momo got hurt?”
Note: Thanks for your request! This one is more serious and also to those wondering if Komeda Coffee is a thing…well it is! Its a coffee shop originated from Nagoya and is famous for their Shiro-noir dessert :) Enjoy!
In which the flames aren’t just red
It’s not every day you get to see Noumus busting into the city, stomping on pedestrians and wreaking havoc in Yaoyorozu’s favourite Komeda Coffee. But there they are. Sparks flying, buildings set ablaze with pieces of concrete whirling through the air. Not that this was completely new to her.
She shot out of her seat the second she heard the alarm. Yaoyorozu didn’t even have time to sigh. Screams of panic and turmoil coerced her to work quickly, leading those in need out of the facility first. Some of the employees in the kitchen hurdled out the counter and ripped off their aprons as they ran. Yaoyorozu made lights (with fully charged batteries of course) instantaneously and positioned them along the exits as the power in the coffee shop wheezed into a stop.
She hadn’t forgotten the training she received from the pro rescue hero, 13, who gave both Uraraka and her some private lessons right before their graduation. He did praise the two for their talents and if there was any merit to it, she had better put it to good use.
“Over here!” She waved her arm over to the closest exit and then forged a metal girder to hold up the ceiling to her left. She yelled once more, even louder, “DON’T PANIC! I’M HERE, JUST FOLLOW THIS PATH.”
An abrupt rumble warned her of the collapse of a nearby column and Yaoyorozu leapt into action. Moving fast to cover the young boy crying next to the concaving structure, a sturdy steel panel popped out from both her elbows to cushion its fall. The boy, red eyed with swollen cheeks, hugged her in gratitude and ran out to his mom.
If only 13 could see her now.
“EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKK” An ugly, gut-wrenching shriek dragged the heroine back to the task at hand and two Noumus stood there, greeting her with its drooling beaks.
Of course, the wreckage was only the prelude to the fight.
“One of those Frankensteins, I would be able to handle, but two?” Yaoyorozu said to herself under her breath and gulped. This was not going to be in her favour. She hurried to press the emergency back-up button on her costume and did a brief 360 around the room. If she wanted to survive, she’s going to need to know her surroundings. At least everyone had already escaped.
Within two seconds, one of the Noumus jumped into midair, crashing through the ceiling and came hurling down, just as fast, aiming right for Yaoyorozu. She dodged by the skin of her teeth. Along her arm, a shot gun began to show itself. Wasting no time, Yaoyorozu skidded to a halt and pulled the trigger right at the Noumu’s face.
Brain goo and whatever else that was pink was blown out, making a loud SPLAT onto someone’s abandoned coffee mug. She knew that was only enough to hold him off until he regenerated.
The other Noumu came charging in and did an indiscriminate swipe at her, perhaps noticing that its partner was temporarily out of commission (heck, what was Yaoyorozu thinking, they don’t even have the intellect to understand what ‘partner’ meant, so nevermind). Once more, she pivoted on her right heel and evaded the blow.
I can’t do this forever, the unpleasant thought made her throat dry with anxiety, maybe five more minutes and I’d be as good as dead.
A stray piece of wood whooshed past her as one of them hammered their fist into a table. The creature twisted it’s neck a few times, eyeballs whirling around to focus, until its pupils centred at the girl. That was probably one of the most disgusting things she had ever seen, if you don’t count the brain guts from the other guy. Yaoyorozu breathed deeply a few times to calm herself, carefully analyzing her next move. It’s okay, Yaoyorozu thought, just pretend this is another strategy game…like chess.
One exhale and she picked up her head. Her weight was on her right leg, ready to leap with her left once-
She was a second off. The Noumu charged head first into her torso, subsequently latching onto her throat. She could smell fresh blood and decay from its foul breath. Fear protruded from every orifice on her body and for the millionth time, she questioned why she was able to become a heroine.
No, I won’t lose, she thought as her desperate attempt in prying the lab experiment off her neck was to no avail. Yaoyorozu created a sharp blade from her neck, stabbing right through the Noumu’s palm. The Noumu screamed in agony, looking even more insane than it did a minute ago, and still, it did not let go. Using the other hand, the Noumu plucked out the blade and threw it onto the floor.
Yaoyorozu eyed the blade, any previous desire to praise herself gone. Even that didn’t work.
Her shaking arms lifted up, but the sweat in her fingers plagued her as she tried to get traction along the Noumu’s wrist. Her mouth opened slightly, trying as hard as she could to muster the strength to swallow air, but the monster strained harder.
Tick, tock.
Her consciousness began to whisk away. She’s going to…going to…
“DETROIT SMASH!”
The Noumu was suddenly flung onto the other side of the room. Feeling herself sliding down the wall, her eyes fluttered open, recognizing the green messy bed-hair of a friend standing adjacent to her frail body.
“Mido…riya-san,” she said in a soft whisper. Her ribcage felt as though someone pierced it with a knife as she tried to steady herself, most likely caused by a fractured bone. Her hand palmed her throat as she lied still, leaving herself in a fit of dry coughs. Yaoyorozu knew she had no power to create any medical kits for herself. Midoriya, with sweat dripping down his forehead, turned to give her a thumbs up, before jumping to ready another attack.
How pathetic, I’m a heroine who needs saving.
Her thoughts fragmented as someone propped her upright, leaning her against their shoulder.
“Yaoyorozu, can you hear me?”
The girl’s eyes fixed onto his face, experiencing a surge of relief she couldn’t put into words.
“Todoroki-san.” The corner of her lips lifted to a small, but substantial smile.
The boy, however, did not return the gesture. He had on his usual impassive expression but was now donning eyes so chilling that Yaoyorozu could feel it ripple through her skin to her bones.
His blue eye, that Yaoyorozu had grown to love, glowed so intense that one glare could strike an enemy down, while his usual warm, grey one looked almost glazed over, as if to say ‘nothing could hold me back’.
And she recognized them as the eyes of his father.
“Don’t talk, just rest,” he hushed her and she could see, somewhere in his perplexed thoughts, that he wasn’t going to fight like he used to. Before the boy eased her by the wall, she squeezed his hand with the last drop of strength she possessed as if telling him to be patient. To be calm.
Yaoyorozu stared at him longer, yearning for him to understand her, but he was already metres away.
A current of sweltering heat covered her senses as Todoroki strided into action. His fire embracing the Noumu in front of him like he was challenging it to counter, and his voice began to boom across the room
“COME GET IT,” Todoroki’s voice was terrifyingly loud, “YOU WANT A FIGHT, DON’T YOU?”
Yaoyorozu’s eyes widened, wanting to stand up, but her legs swiftly gave in. From the side, she could see Midoriya’s confusion as well. That was not the Todoroki she had spent countless hours with. That was not the Todoroki that she came to understand. Her brows furrowed as another wave of scorching fire rocketed through the facility.
But it wasn’t just fire. It was blue fire.
Todoroki took a step back as the Noumu, looking as though it was burnt halfway to a crisp, extended his arms to get a hold of him. The fire and ice hero propelled his left fist forward and grasped the monster’s neck before combusting it into a bonfire of aquamarine.
Yaoyorozu would’ve said it was beautiful, if it weren’t for Todoroki’s killing intent.
The Noumu broke into pieces of charcoal, some of its parts immediately rustling into bitter ash. Todoroki’s chest heaved a few times, feeling the adrenaline pulsing through his veins, and looked almost too proud.
Midoriya, on the other hand, was pushing his Noumu head first into the wall. It appeared to be significantly weakened but was able to rise up into the air with its last momentum.
Oh no. The girl could feel herself shaking uncontrollably as the Noumu crash-landed right in front of her, arms ready for a punch.
“Yaoyorozu!”
Under such immense pressure, she could still hear him screaming for her. Yaoyorozu dug her fingers deep onto her thigh, waiting for impact.
But it never came.
The Noumu in front of her screeched as it was enchained in ice. Todoroki seethed through clenched teeth, manipulating his billowing hellfire around the creature. Gradually, the Noumu began to disintegrate, its remains carbonized into nothingness.
“I’M NOT DONE WITH YOU,” Todoroki called out, “NOT UNTIL-“
“That’s enough.”
Her voice didn’t reach him, the air around still broiling. He appeared as though a valve broke in him, power growing with no inhibitions. She could see the fire slowly amplifying and engulfing the room. Midoriya took a step forward, attempting to reach Todoroki but was blown away by the hot currents that exerted from the fire.
“Todoroki-san, please, that’s enough!” With tender eyes, she gazed at him and shouted, “Look at me and stop!”
The boy’s chest rose with each weighty breath and his arm declined, the magnificent flames along with it.
“I’m okay,” She could see him running to her and she found herself repeating again, “I’m okay.”
“I…I didn’t know what came over me,” Todoroki knelt down and said in a murmur. He lightly pulled her head to him, careful not to agitate her wound but she still pursed her lips in pain. As she nuzzled into the comfortable bend of his shoulders, she languished at the smell of burnt flesh lingering through the air and found him leaving a small kiss on the crown of her head.
“I can’t lose you,” he whispered, but she could catch every emotion in that sentence, “when I saw you like this, I felt so useless. Useless that I couldn’t –“
“Well, I’m fine now,” she answered, “Thanks for coming.”
Todoroki held her firmly again, reminding himself to check the bruising prints left on her neck, “Yaoyorozu, what can I do to make you feel better.”
It sounded more like a command than a question, and she wanted to laugh.
“Well, for one thing, call an ambulance.”
Midoriya cut in shyly; the whole time he’s been standing off to the side, hoping not to disturb the two, “I already called it, Yaoyorozu-san, they’ll be here in a minute or less. Bakugou just texted and said his area is clear too.”
The girl gave him a grateful smile before holding her ribcage, muffling the sharp sting, “Todoroki-san,” she continued, fingers tapping playfully against his forearm, “I didn’t get to finish my Shiro-noir cake, so if you could take me to Komeda Coffee after my recovery then that’d be greatly appreciated.”
Todoroki nodded, the grin on his face juxtaposing with his usual callous expression, “Sure, anything.”
He focused on her, the storm in his eyes now settled and finally, they could hear everything come to a standstill.

20 The World’s Most Famous Brands Very First Products
We’ve all gotta start somewhere! It can be hard to imagine some of the most iconic and ubiquitous brands of today as a struggling start-up, yet every company has its own origin story.
While many people like to romanticize and sometimes exaggerate the ‘bootstrap ideology’ of self-made billionaires building the foundations of business empires in their garages, some companies do have genuinely humble and surprising beginnings, and they are really interesting to see!
This list, compiled by Apegeo, looks at the baby photos of some of the business world’s greatest celebrities. Go back in time to when Amazon was just a book store, and Samsung just a guy with a phone,. Witness these mega-corporations taking their very first steps toward fame!
Scroll down to check them out for yourself below, and let us know what you think in the comments!
#1 Rice Cooker (1946)

Founders – Masaru Ibuka, Akio Morita
First location – Tokyo, Japan
After World War II, Sony founder Masaru Ibuka invented a product to try and serve the millions of homes who had electricity but lacked the appliances to use it. The result was this electric rice cooker.
Released under the business name Tokyo Telecommunications Research Institute, before Sony itself became an incorporated company, the rice cooker was little more than some aluminium electrodes on the bottom of a wooden bucket. Depending on the unregulated electric current at the time, the kind of rice or how much water was used, the rice generally ended up served as overcooked mush or undercooked grain.
Because of this, the product was never actually released onto the market. Instead, a prototype now sits ensconced in glass at the Sony Archives in Shinagawa, a relic from a distant age before electronic gadgets were the norm. Source: Gizmodo sony
#2 Online Bookstore (1994)
Founders – Jeff Bezos
First location – Bellevue, WA
Amazon began as an online bookstore in way back in 1994. Founder Jeff Bezos decided at first to call the bookstore “Cadabra,” He later changed the name to Amazon.com, Inc. a few months later, after a lawyer misheard its original name as “cadaver.”
Bezos selected the name Amazon by looking through the dictionary; he settled on “Amazon” because it was a place that was “exotic and different”, just as he had envisioned for his Internet enterprise. The Amazon River, he noted, was the biggest river in the world, and he planned to make his store the biggest bookstore in the world. Additionally, a name that began with “A” was preferred because it would probably be at the top of an alphabetized list. Source: Wikipedia Amazon
#3 Stationary Delivery (1943)
Founders – Ingvar Kamprad
First location – Älmhult, Sweden
IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad showed entrepreneurial promise from a young age. At age 5, he began buying matches in bulk from Stockholm and selling them to neighbors for a profit. He later moved on to selling flower seeds, greeting cards, Christmas tree decorations, and more.
In 1943, when he was 17, Kamprad founded IKEA from his uncle’s kitchen table. It began as a mail-order business, selling a variety of items like stockings, jewelry, watches, pens, and picture frames. Kamprad added the first piece of furniture to the company’s offerings a few years later. Furniture sales got even bigger with the introduction of the famous IKEA catalog in 1951 and the first showroom in 1953. IKEA’s furniture soon became the focal point of the company as it began phasing out all other products over the next few years. Source: Ikea
#4 Card Game (1889)
Founders – Fusajiro Yamauchi
First location – Kyoto, Japan
Nintendo, the video game brand that launched such 1980s and ’90s-era franchises as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokemon, is actually one of the older companies on this list. It was founded in 1889 as a playing card company based in Kyoto, Japan. The cards (named hanafuda, or “flower cards” for their ornate floral imagery) were popular among the organized crime gangs that inhabited Japan’s gambling halls. The company’s origins are even reflected in its name: When separated into three characters, “Nin-ten-do” roughly translates to “Leave luck to heaven,” or “Work hard, but in the end it is in heaven’s hands.” Source: wikipedia
#5 Wooden Toys (1923)
Founders – Ole Kirk Christiansen
First location – Billund, Denmark
The toy brand that’s best known for its plastic, interlocking bricks was founded by a carpenter.
Struggling to find enough wood to build furniture during Denmark’s recession of the 1930s, Ole Kirk Kristiansen began turning wood scraps into children’s toys. Some of LEGO’s first products included toy trains, automobiles, and a wooden duck on wheels that quacked when pulled.
When he started experimenting with plastic toys in 1947, most department stores weren’t interested. Fortunately for future generations of LEGO builders, that didn’t discourage him, and plastic bricks eventually became the focus of the company. Source: Lego
#6 Computer Apple I (1976)
Founders – S.Jobs, S.Wozniak, R.Wayne
First location – Cupertino, CA
Steve Wozniak originally assembled the microcomputer Apple I in 1975 for a Homebrew Computer Club meeting in Silicon Valley. Wozniak said, that the basic machine was “the first time in history anyone had typed a character on a keyboard and seen it show up on their own computer’s screen right in front of them.”
Another club member, Steve Jobs, helped to sell 50 orders of the machine for $500 each to a local computer store. The success of the sales made the pair over $50,000 for and encouraged them to get to work on the Apple II.
The rest is history.

#7 Search Engine (1998)
Founders – Larry Page, Sergey Brin
First location – Menlo Park, CA
Google has its origins in “BackRub”, a research project that was begun in 1996 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both PhD students at Stanford University in Stanford, California. The project initially also involved an unofficial “third founder”, Scott Hassan, the lead programmer who wrote much of the code for the original Google Search engine, but left before Google was officially founded as a company.
Page’s ‘web crawler’ began exploring the web in March 1996, with Page’s own Stanford home page serving as the only starting point.
The first version of Google was released in August 1996 on the Stanford website. It used nearly half of Stanford’s entire network bandwidth. Source: Wikipedia Google
#8 Grocery Trading Store (1938)
Founders – Lee Byung-chul
First location – Seoul, South Korea
Samsung was founded as a grocery trading store on March 1, 1938, by Lee Byung-Chull. He started his business in Taegu, Korea, trading noodles and other goods produced in and around the city and exporting them to China and its provinces.
After the Korean war and during the country’s push to industrialization, the company successfully expanded into textile-manufacturing.
New subsidiaries such as Samsung Heavy Industries, Samsung Shipbuilding, and Samsung Precision Company soon followed.
Samsung first entered the electronics industry in 1969 with several electronics-focused divisions—their first products were black-and-white televisions. During the 1970s the company began to export home electronics products overseas. Source: Britannica Wikipedia,Wikipedia
#9 Automatic Loom (1926)
Founders – Kiichiro Toyoda
First location – Nagoya, Japan
Toyota was founded in 1926 as Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, Ltd. by Sakichi Toyoda, the inventor of a series of manual and machine-powered looms. The most impressive of these was the Toyoda Automatic Loom, Type G, a completely automatic high-speed loom featuring the ability to change shuttles without stopping and dozens of other innovations. At the time it was the world’s most advanced loom, delivering a dramatic improvement in quality and a twenty-fold increase in productivity.
In 2007, this machine was registered as item No. 16 in the Mechanical Engineering Heritage of Japan as “a landmark achievement that advanced the global textile industry and laid the foundation for the development of the Toyota Group.” Source: Wikipedia Toyota,Toyota
#10 Memory Chip (1969)
Founders – Gordon Moore, Robert Noyce
First location – Mountain View, CA
Intel was founded in Mountain View, California, in 1968 by Gordon E. Moore (known for “Moore’s law”), a chemist, and Robert Noyce, a physicist and co-inventor of the integrated circuit.
When Intel began they did not make processors, as they are famous for now, they made memory. Specifically SRAM, DRAM, and EPROMs. The very first product Intel released, in April of 1969, was the 3101 64-bit SRAM. It was made on the new, and fast Schottky Bipolar process. This made it very fast (access times of 60ns) but very power hungry. It dissipated 525mW, over half a watt, for 64-bits of memory. Source: The CPU Shack Intel_africa,wikipedia
#11 Image Computer (1986)
Founders – Edwin Catmull, Alvy Ray Smith, Steve Jobs
First location – Richmond, CA
Pixar was founded as The Graphics Group, which is one third of the Computer Division of Lucasfilm that was launched in 1979 with the hiring of Dr. Ed Catmull from the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), where he was in charge of the Computer Graphics Lab (CGL). At NYIT, the researchers pioneered many of the CG foundation techniques—in particular the invention of the “alpha channel.”
Initially, Pixar was a high-end computer hardware company whose core product was the Pixar Image Computer, a system primarily sold to government agencies and the medical community. One of the buyers of Pixar Image Computers was Disney Studios, whose corporate parent would ultimately become its most important partner. Source: Fandom wikipedia,Pixar
#12 Online Payments Service (1998)
Founders – Ken Howery, Luke Nosek, Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, Yu Pan Russel Simmons, Elon Musk
First location – Palo Alto, CA
var quads_screen_width = document.body.clientWidth; if ( quads_screen_width >= 1140 ) /* desktop monitors */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-7813024252608044" data-ad-slot="5649741413" data-ad-format="auto">'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle if ( quads_screen_width >= 1024 && quads_screen_width < 1140 ) []).push(); if ( quads_screen_width >= 768 && quads_screen_width < 1024 ) /* tablet portrait */ document.write('<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-7813024252608044" data-ad-slot="5649741413" data-ad-format="auto">'); (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle if ( quads_screen_width < 768 )
PayPal was first established in December 1998 as Confinity, a company that developed security software for handheld devices.Confinity was founded by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, Luke Nosek, Ken Howery, Yu Pan and Russel Simmons.
PayPal was developed and launched as a money transfer service at Confinity in 1999.
In March 2000, Confinity merged with X.com, an online banking company founded by Elon Musk. Musk was optimistic about the future success of the money transfer business Confinity was developing.
In October of that year, Musk made the decision that X.com would terminate its other Internet banking operations and focus on the PayPal money service. The X.com company was then renamed PayPal in 2001, and expanded rapidly throughout the year until company executives decided to take PayPal public in 2002. Source:Wikipedia Paypal
#13 Microblogging Service (2006)
Founders – Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, Evan Williams
First location – San Francisco, CA
Twitter started in 2006 when the podcasting company Odeo realized they needed to reinvent themselves and began brainstorming new creative ideas. Jack Dorsey introduced the idea of creating an SMS that would allow a user to communicate with a small group of people.
Twitter was first called “status” until the group looked in the dictionary for names and found twitter which fit it perfectly. The original product name was twttr.
The project work began on March 21, 2006, when Dorsey published the first Twitter message: “just setting up my twttr”. The prototype for twitter was tested as an internal service for Odeo employees but later launched publicly in July 2006.
In October 2006, Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone and Evan Williams formed Obvious Corporation with other members from Odeo. They then bought out Odeo from the investors and other shareholders. In April of 2007, Twitter became its own company. Source: Profile Rehab dailymail, biz
#14 Distribution Of Japanese Shoes (1964)
Founders – Bill Bowerman, Phil Knight
First location – Eugene, OR
The origins of Nike can be traced back to a school paper for a small-business class. Phil Knight was enrolled at the Stanford Graduate School of Business when he got the idea for a Japanese shoe company that manufactured quality products at lower costs than the German brands that dominated the market at the time. The theme of his essay titled “Can Japanese Sports Shoes Do to German Sports Shoes What Japanese Cameras Have Done to German Cameras?” inspired him to found a real-life business in 1964. Nike—then Blue Ribbon Sports—began as a distributor for Onitsuka Tiger Running Shoes made in Japan. Knight initially sold the shoes himself from the back of his station wagon at Oregon University track meets. Source: Cnn,Nike
#15 Fast-Food Restaurant (1955)
Founders – Richard McDonald, Maurice McDonald
First location – San Bernardino, CA
In 1937 Patrick McDonald opened “The Airdrome”, a food stand, on Huntington Drive (Route 66) near the Monrovia Airport in the Los Angeles County city of Monrovia, California with hot dogs being one of the first items sold. Hamburgers were later added to the menu at a cost of ten cents with all-you-can-drink orange juice at five cents. In 1940, sons Maurice and Richard moved the entire building to San Bernardino, California. The restaurant was renamed “McDonald’s Bar-B-Que” and had 25 menu items, mostly barbecue.
In 1954, Ray Kroc, a seller of Prince Castle brand Multimixer milkshake machines, learned that the McDonald brothers were using eight of his machines in their San Bernardino restaurant. His curiosity was piqued, and he went to take a look at the restaurant. He was joined by good friend Charles Lewis who had suggested to Kroc several improvements to the McDonald’s burger recipe.
Kroc was so impressed by the brothers’ restaurant that he offered to set up a national franchise, starting with the ‘original’ Mcdonalds (as we know it today) in Des Plaines, Illinois, near Chicago. It began with a simple menu of nine items including burgers, fries, milkshake, juice and milk. Source: Wikipedia Mcdonalds, people
#16 Animation “Alice Comedies” (1923)
Founders – Walt Disney, Roy O. Disney
First location – Los Angeles, CA
The Alice Comedies are a series of animated cartoons created by Walt Disney in the 1920s, in which a live action little girl named Alice (originally played by Virginia Davis) and an animated cat named Julius have adventures in an animated landscape.
Disney, Ub Iwerks, and their staff made the first Alice Comedy, a one-reel (ten-minute) short subject titled Alice’s Wonderland, while still heading the failing Laugh-O-Gram Studio in Kansas City, Missouri. After completing the film, the studio went bankrupt and was forced to shut down. After raising money by working as a freelance photographer, Disney bought a one-way train ticket to Los Angeles, California to live with his uncle Robert and his brother Roy. In California, Disney continued to send out proposals for the Alice series, in hopes of a distribution deal, which was finally arranged through Winkler Pictures, run by Margaret J. Winkler and her fianceé, Charles Mintz.
Although seen as cute and funny in their time, the Alice Comedies contain content which might be considered surprising and somewhat harsh today. Although Alice is a little girl, she spends much of her time avoiding danger, and even getting kidnapped by the cartoon villains, threatened with such perils as being tied to a log in a sawmill. Although all of Alice’s threats are cartoon drawings, some might find the imagery a bit disturbing due to the character’s young age, and the fact that she is a real person, or they might find it simply light-hearted and fun, due to the portrayal. #17 Coffee Shop (1971)
Founders – Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, Gordon Bowker
First location – Seattle, WA
The first Starbucks was opened in Seattle, Washington, on March 31, 1971, by three partners who met while they were students at the University of San Francisco: English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegl, and writer Gordon Bowker were inspired to sell high-quality coffee beans and equipment by coffee roasting entrepreneur Alfred Peet after he taught them his style of roasting beans. Bowker recalls that Terry Heckler, with whom Bowker owned an advertising agency, thought words beginning with “st” were powerful. The founders brainstormed a list of words beginning with “st”, and eventually landed on “Starbo”, a mining town in the Cascade Range. From there, the group remembered “Starbuck,” the name of the chief mate in the book Moby-Dick. Bowker said, “Moby-Dick didn’t have anything to do with Starbucks directly; it was only coincidental that the sound seemed to make sense.”
The first Starbucks store was located in Seattle at 2000 Western Avenue from 1971–1976. This cafe was later moved to 1912 Pike Place. During this time, the company only sold roasted whole coffee beans and did not yet brew coffee to sell. During their first year of operation, they purchased green coffee beans from Peet’s, then began buying directly from growers. Source: Wikipedia BBC,sites.google
#18 Game “Zombi” (1986)
Founders – Christian Guillemot, Claude Guillemot, Gérard Guillemot, Michel Guillemot, Yves Guillemot
First location – Carentoir, France
Ubisoft Entertainment is a French video game company headquartered in Montreuil with several development studios across the world.
The Guillemot family had established themselves as a farming support business for farmers in the Brittany province in northwest France and nearby regions, including into the United Kingdom. The five sons of the family – Christian, Claude, Gérard, Michel and Yves – helped with the sales, distribution, accounting and management of the company with their parents prior to university. All five gained business experience while at university, which they brought back to the family business to help improve it, at a time where farming businesses were starting to wane. The brothers came up with the idea of diversification to sell other products of use to farmers; Claude began with selling CD audio media, and later the brothers expanded to computers and additional software which included video games.
In the early 1980s, they saw that the costs of buying computers and software from a French supplier was more expensive than buying the same materials in the United Kingdom and shipping to France, and came upon the idea of a mail-order business around computers and software. Their mother said they could start their own business this way as long as they managed it themselves and equally split its shares between the five of them. Their first business was Guillemot Informatique, founded in 1984.
They originally only sold through mail order, but soon were getting orders from French retailers, since they were able to undercut other suppliers by up to 50% of the cost of new titles. By 1986, this company was earning about 40 million French francs (roughly US$5.8 million at that time). In 1985, the brothers established Guillemot Corporation for similar distribution of computer hardware. As demand continued, the brothers recognised that video game software was becoming a lucrative property, and decided that they needed to get into the development side of the industry, already having insight on the publication and distribution side.Ubi Soft was founded by the brothers on 28 March 1986 The name “Ubi Soft” was selected to represent “ubiquitous” software.
