“Dependent clause, main clause” sentence structures should be off limits in newly published SFF until authors can prove that they know literally any other grammatical structure. If you can write a full page without this specific sentence style then you get it back.
#this brought to you by the fact that a book I finished reading but will not name used this sentence structure FIVE FUCKING TIMES IN A ROW#NOT ON PURPOSE#NOT FOR ANY SPECIFIC SYTLISTIC OR THEMATIC EFFECT#JUST BECUASE#this is also not a one-off problem#I have come across it multiple times in multiple books#I just want to shake people and scream that varying your sentence lengeths and structures HELPS THR READER#and also helps change up the feel of something#romance is as bad if not worse on this front#but I read a lot of old romance rather than new romance because publishers have turned against historicals for some reason
