From only a short distance away, Dr. Robotnik held her breath, watching with hopeful eyes from behind round glasses as the mechanical arms keeping her creation upright pulled away.
He stood limply, but didn't fall this time. The doctor couldn't help smiling to herself. A small victory. One of many, she hoped.
His fingers moved. Then, his head began to shift, lifting just in time for his eyes to turn on. They slid back and forth on his visor, blinking, expressing light confusion by growing shorter to emulate eyelids. She noticed that they seemed to occasionally flicker like dying lightbulbs.
Dr. Robotnik frowned, noting it down. Hopefully that would be the worst of his problems.
Then, finally, those red-orange eyes would settle on her, staring her down for a long moment.
“Mm… ...Mma…ria…?” Shadow finally rasped through quivering lips, and Maria nearly began crying right then and there.
It had been just over fifty years since she'd heard his voice.
In an instant, she’d dashed forward and came to kneel down at his side, hands on his arms, staring up at Shadow and watching as he processed everything he was seeing and feeling.
“Shadow. It's me.” Maria whispered, “I know a lot has changed, but… it's me. Maria. Your sister.”
Shadow’s eyes expanded. His mouth opened and closed, trying to find the words it wanted to form but failing. He instead looked away, glancing around the lab with flickering eyes before eventually returning to her, taking her in, processing.
“They… shot… me. How…?” Shadow looked down at his body. Or, more accurately, the mechanical facsimile that now housed it. “...What happened to me? How am I… here…?”
“Fifty years of determination, love, and very, very hard work is how.” Maria stood, the smile never leaving her face. In fact, it grew.
She'd done it. He was back.

Maria herself is that type of villain who presents herself with a warm, gentle smile, open arms, and good intentions. She fought and dismantled G.U.N, she helps the people other humans don't consider people. She's a wonderful leader.
...Until you see Maria's true face.
She hates humanity. She wants revenge on it and she's determined to destroy it, even if she has to trample nature to achieve that. She's the reason Sonic is roboticized, because she wanted to bring back the other hedgehog she knew. Dr. Maria Robotnik is a ruthless dictator.
But when you see her smile as she personally ensures the health of her soldiers, you have to wonder if that's true.

to talk more about Salvaged AU because The Brainrot, Maria's army is actually pretty different from Ivo's.
Rather than being a bunch of badniks, it's mainly mobians who have been enhanced with technology. Whether they're supplied with weapons or have body parts replaced depends on the individual.
It's actually shockingly rare for someone to be fully or considerably roboticized, though some who need it for the sake of everyday life (or just want it) can be.
While there are still the regular badniks powered by animals, those are built to be supportive of the main army by either healing them, providing a vantage point, or attacking alongside them.
Maria's strength as a villain mainly stems from her charisma, as she "loves" mobians and wants to support them over humans, which is something a lot of mobians found appealing when G.U.N was still around.
She's a little more restrained too, but she still has her obligatory dramatic moments, especially when it comes to those rare moments where Shadow is legitimately being threatened. Maria isn't above using dirty tricks to stop people from leaving her army, either.
