Death March selfie
Posing with the 1948 masterpiece “Capas” by Bulaqeño artist Demetrio Diego (1909-1988) on display at the National Museum of the Philippines in Manila.
I have long been aware of the painting when I came across a photograph of it in the 1986 book and poster portfolio “A Portfolio of 60 Philippine Art Masterpieces” published by Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports.
The painting featured the survivors of the Bataan Death March, after the Japanese Imperial Army forced the 80,000 Filipino and American soldiers to trek 120 kilometers from Bataan to Tarlac, with around 18,000 men perishing along the way. At the end, the survivors were incarcerated in Camp O'Donnell in the Municipality of Capas.
Artist’s Biography:
Demetrio Diego (1909-1988) is an illustrator and painter, who is considered part of the first wave of modernism in Philippine art. Diego first took his arts studies at the University of the Philippines (U.P.) School of Fine Arts, but he had to drop out due to the lack of finances. Diego soon found employment as an illustration for newspapers such as the Tribune and Taliba, and he would later become the chief artist of Sunday Times Magazines from 1950s to the early 1970s. From 1964-1965, Diego served as president of the Society of Philippine Illustrators and Cartoonists in 1964-1965. In his paintings, Diego’s bold strokes and different coloring style made him stand out from the ruling style of Romantic Classicism of the American Occupation (1898-1946), which caught the eye of the modernist proponent, Victorio Edades, who invited Diego to be one of the Thirteen Moderns. Although his work as an illustrator took up most of his time, Diego has painted many artworks, with his 1948 painting of the prisoners of war during World War II, entitled “Capas” considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Philippine art by the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
This picture was taken circa 2015, during my regular explorations to document local historical landmarks and artworks around the Philippines.

The Balefires of Baldr in Sweden on St. John’s Eve
“In Sweden the Eve of St. John (St. Hans) is the most joyous night of the whole year. Throughout some parts of the country, especially in the provinces of Bohus and Scania and in districts bordering on Norway, it is celebrated by the frequent discharge of firearms and by huge bonfires, formerly called Balder's Balefires (Balder's Bǎlar), which are kindled at dusk on hills and eminences and throw a glare of light over the surrounding landscape. The people dance round the fires and leap over or through them.”
—J. G. Frazer, Balder the Beautiful, part 1 (The Golden Bough, vol. X, 1913, p. 172)
