Yes. I’m immediately feeling your psychic gifts come from your Native American lineage and I encourage you to connect more deeply with your lineage through visiting the original ancestral land of your tribe, and maybe buying items that represent that tribe to you. Like during the pandemic to connect with my Native American roots I bought some jewelry connected to my tribe. But that doesn’t mean your full power comes from just your Native side. Do a little bit of digging into the mysticism tied to the other parts of your bloodline.

Around the time I was trying to connect with my native side, I also tried connecting more deeply to my Irish side through looking into Celtic mythology and druidry. My thoughts on tarot/oracle card decks....

Having looked at several tarot card decks online (and having bought a few), I've decided that I don't like tarot decks where the numbered minor arcana are repetitive in regards to their images. I bought the new LOTR tarot that was published earlier this year and discovered that the minor arcana cards were very repetitive with their art. One of the reasons why I collect tarot and oracle cards is for the artwork and if the cards aren't unique I don't feel connected to them. I suppose that I was lucky in the past in that the Viking and Hobbit deck I bought weren't like that - the Viking deck was particularly good because the cards show scenes from the myths so they are a useful tool in learning them. In contrast, I find that I prefer oracle decks because the art is more likely to be unique on each card. I am drawn to nature/animal themed ones though, BUT I prefer ones that are centered around European pagan cultures like Druid/Celtic ones, rather than the ones which seem to steal from Native Americans, or ones which feature animals that I am very much connected to. Although I love all animals, I only feel connected to those which share my environment, or which are more likely to share my environment. Sadly, there seems to be a lot of cultural appropriation with some decks.

New Sugar Moon

As the days begin to warm up, but the nights still freeze, the maple sap begins to run. We will tap the trees to begin gathering the sap for the sugar house at the nature center that I volunteer at. In my dad's hometown, they would tap all the trees in town when he was growing up (drunks peeing in the buckets kind of ruined it for everyone). So I call this moon cycle, the sugar moon (the act of taping maple trees and boiling the sap is called "sugaring"). Once I decided on the name, I became curious and found that this is actually what one of the Native American tribes also called this moon cycle. Which is unsurprising, as one of the few positive interactions between the Native groups and settlers was the teaching of sugaring.

The new moon in Pisces is all about compassion and mysticism. Get back to the foundations of practice with some meditation or trance work. Try viewing the world through another’s eyes. My own chart also brings a lot of creativity to this time and reaching out to people through art.

To go along with my astrology reading, I drew the Plant Dyeing card from the new Seasons of the Witch Oracle deck (Ostara). This card also speaks towards creativity and expressing oneself through artistic mediums. One of these days I’ll get pictures of my journal in here again, but I do have a lot going on this moon cycle that call for creative beginnings. Many of these ideas are spurring new blog posts to come.

Between planting literal seeds, launching a seed library, getting a baby blanket finished for my cousin, and tapping maple trees, spring is on its way. I can feel my schedule getting busier.

Sugaring

Sugaring is a traditional art that is in danger of disappearing in the United States due to climate change. The ideal conditions are when temperatures are below freezing at night but above 40 Fahrenheit during the day. This is because the sap runs up and down the tree to match the changing temperatures. If the temperatures stay above 40 for even one night, the season is over and we begin to sugar off. To turn the sap into syrup, it must be boiled for long periods of time. There’s whole techniques to getting this right and I’m a fairly new sugarer learning from old timers who have done it for years (I suspect it’s not as complicated as I make it in my head). The native Americans would go even further with their boiling and make maple sugar to use for sweetening and seasoning meals.

This is our first harvest. The maples give us something to look forward to, and traditionally something to feast on when food supplies begin to get short. If you live in northern regions of North America (north eastern and upper midwestern regions of the US, eastern regions of Canada), you may have a whole culture around sugaring that you can become a part of just by learning how to do it in your backyard. I have maple trees in my own yard and will pay homage to them this new moon.

There are also other trees you can tap at this time. I hear birch is popular in some parts of the world.

Ancestors

As mentioned above, my ancestors sugared. Leaving a bit of any sap that I’ve gathered from the first run, if there is any yet (there should be this year), is a good offering at this time. Sap is just sugar water after all.

I also feel that I should give the native Americans of my region their due during this time. Without this knowledge, many people would not have survived the late winter. As ancestors of the land, I try to leave offerings while being sensitive to culture and historical connotations. There are still sugar bushes left from before Native Americans were pushed off the land in my area and to not acknowledge their presence in my land and the culture that’s here now because of their knowledge does the native cultures still here a disservice, in my white opinion.

Maple sugaring has become very dear to my heart and the trees good friends. I wouldn’t have learned about this practice in my area if I hadn’t been inspired to volunteer at the local nature center when I read the book “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer. And though margaret magnus has helped open a door, formerly cracking dawn. I can not fully addopt her use of words in trying to create an english alphabet oracle. The thought has crossed my mind. I dont see it possible to make it unbiased based on personal cross reference word associations based solely on phonemes. Though she is close. I can sense. In her logic of poetic connections. Best to keep to what’s already in circulation and build from there. Though it won’t go unrecognized now and may infact work itself in.

Sleeping pills could be a thing with you, that’s being repeated. You may have struggled with sleep & relaxation your whole life, even as a child.
