The New Normal

Do you like change? I do. But this can all just please settle down a bit now.

Even the father of change had bad days. Charles Darwin writing to Charles Lyell in 1861 said ‘I am very poorly today and very stupid and hate everybody and everything’. He had an undiagnosed debilitating condition for much of his adult life and also suffered extraordinary self-doubt which leads him retreating into his happy place which was barnacles. He’s also one of history’s most renowned medical student failures, dropping out of Edinburgh after 2 years. But he is most famous for his book, On The Origin of Species published in 1859 where he looks at successful adaptation of species through generational natural selection. Essentially, changing is winning. But in this case, very very slowly.

We’ve all had to do a lot of changing of late. And it’s all still happening. And it’s unsettling. Predictably, airports are full of books called ‘Advance or Die’, ‘The Developmental Paradigm’ and ‘Who Moved My Cheese?’ (only one of these is real, answer at the end). And so the business success websites suggest that acceptance of change is part cognitive, part emotional, part dispositional. Thus, if you are generally optimistic, good at varying your emotions and can use different strategies you’ll be better at it when things shift around you. Of course, most of these sites are for leaders trying to ‘help’ staff get on with the new bit of thinking they help will solve their problems and often involves changing job title or desk. https://www.ccl.org/articles/leading-effectively-articles/adaptability-1-idea-3-facts-5-tips/ . But the problem with the covid is that we’ve had to ride this big reactive roller coaster. The NHS rose to the challenge like a beast from the depths ad although not perfect; I think we can all say that we did incredibly well. It’s going to take a time to process and there will be some haunting memories for many of us ( I do include myself in this). But, with a bit of prediction, a bit of learning from the experience of other countries, there has still had to be unpredictable events in terms of how work has been, our lives, our loves. And that has been weird. And that’s made us feel weird.

A however an exciting change to come out of this time crystallised by the catastrophic death of George Floyd is the advancement of the Black Lives Matter movement and the promise of real positive change after centuries of repression and violence against Black people.

Change can bring out elation, fear, panic, laziness…all the humanity humans have to muster. Doctors have a great urge to ‘do’, to improve things for others and ourselves. Having a mixture of stasis plus unpredictable events that affect us out of control might make us want to impose ourselves on situations. When we can’t do that it can get frustrating and lead to bad tempers, illness or despondency. We might look for ways to make things make sense which is why conspiracy theories take hold. That can be secretly pointing fingers in departments through to burning down 5G towers. Or just feeling a bit cross and tired. All this is normal. Except burning down the towers, don’t do that. We can get some solace from the knowledge that we are not alone in feeling like this. We can try and make some positive changes in our environment such as writing up that audit (yay!), planning a project or booking some leave. We can try avoiding the things that blur out the uncertainty such as drugs, overwork and the medics favourite, booze. But most of all, we can look after each other. And that means maybe less finger pointing although we all love that index digit workout. And supporting positive change whether it’s for our Black colleagues who have been especially vulnerable during Covid or struggling families we know. And think what normal means to us anyway. I took the personally very threatening step to cut back on a bit of work as I realised that charging through life like a steam train wasn’t doing me any good. I’ve used my remote access more, like most of the country has been forced to do. I can now cook, load the dishwasher and do a MDT at the same time. But that’s a good new normal.

I’ve also decided it’s a good idea not to hate everybody. Mostly. Most of the time. And try to find personal empowerment where I can even if its sending my shielding mum increasingly baroque parcels of make-up samples (‘it’s got THREE layers, darling’). And not spend the next 20 years watching change unfold feeling ill and writing about barnacles.

DENVER, Nov. 14, 2017 — Attala Systems today announced the launch of its breakthrough storage solution for the High Performance Computing (HPC) market at SC2017 in Denver. The solution, which will be available in 2018, was developed in collaboration with Intel and Supermicro and utilizes Attala’s Composable Storage Infrastructure and management software, Supermicro enclosures, Intel FPGAs and Intel Optane and Intel 3D NAND SSDs with NVMe to achieve 5.5M IOPS and 1PB per 1U of rack space. The solution  also provides multi-tenancy and parallel data sharing capabilities for Lustre and Spark. Attala Systems, which recently won the G2M Research “Most Innovative NVMe AFA” Key Company Award for Fall 2017, will be demonstrating the solution with Spark in both the Intel booth (Booth 1301), and with Lustre in the Supermicro booth (Booth 1611) at SC17, being held at the Colorado Convention Center, Denver Colo.

“Simultaneously achieving high density and performance in an HPC storage system – that can be reliably shared by multiple users – has always been a challenge, especially at a competitive price point”, said Taufik Ma, CEO of Attala Systems. “Our demonstrations at Super Computer 2017 are meant to show not only that these attributes aren’t mutually exclusive, but that they can be achieved with real HPC workloads such as Lustre and Spark. This level of density and performance opens up new options for HPC users.”

Historically, HPC storage systems have either focused on achieving high density or high performance, but not both. Additionally, high-performance HPC storage sulutions have generally not been available at competitive price points. The HPC solution from Attala Systems to be demonstrated at SC 2017 not only changes that paradigm, but does so for real HPC workloads. When the solution is available in 2018, each 1U storage node will feature up to 1PB capacity, 5.5 million IOPS, and multi-path network redundancy. The reduction in latency provided by Attala’s composable storage infrastructure also turbocharges small-packet performance in systems such as Lustre’s Data-on-MDT feature. Finally, the Attala solution allows multi-tenancy storage operations and parallel data sharing in HPC applications.

“Supermicro has been a longtime key player in the HPC market,” said Tau Leng, PhD, senior vice president of technology and marketing at Supermicro. “This demonstration shows that the combination of Supermicro’s wide offering of NVMe-capable server and storage solutions, Attala’s high-performance composable storage infrastructure, and Intel SSD and Intel FPGA technology can fundamentally change the game for HPC storage, giving HPC users new options for their workloads.”

The HPC-focused solution utilizes the FPGA-powered Attala HNA25/40 Host NVMe-oF Adapters in host servers and Attala NSC40/50 NVMe-oF System Controllers and Intel NVMe SSDs in a Supermicro SSG-136R-N32JBF 1U enclosure.  Because the Attala Systems storage nodes do not require a CPU, host agents or software, they dramatically simplify deployment and maintenance of the overall solution across multiple racks and heterogeneous environments. Storage provisioning and orchestration are also simplified thanks to Attala’s SPARA management software, which automates the management and use of storage assets. These capabilities help Attala Systems reduce the cost of the overall solution, enabling high-performance and high storage density to be achieved in an HPC storage system with very competitive acquisition costs and total cost of ownership.

Attala, Supermicro, and Intel will also be discussing the solution and its use in the HPC arena in the Supermicro Booth (Booth 1611) at SC17. Presentations will be on Tuesday November 14th from 11am-noon, and on Wednesday November 15th from 11:00am-noon. Copies of the Lustre and Spark solution briefs will also be available in both the Supermicro and Intel booths.

TNVC There are many misconceptions and questions about PVS-14’s and buying night vision devices in general. So, I wanted to clear up some issues. Here are some of the questions we are frequently asked:

What is the difference between your TNV/PVS-14 and your competitor’s Product?

This is one of the most common questions we field. The simple answer is: just because something is called a PVS-14, does not mean it is a legit PVS-14.

The complex answer is this: TNV/PVS-14 NVG’s are semi-custom night vision systems that are held to the highest spec. We stake our name and reputation on every goggle that leaves our facility.

Most night vision distributors are resellers, buying and selling night vision like any number of other tactical products. They do not specialize in night vision devices or build them. They have little to no control over the components or image tube specs.

At TNVC, night vision is what we do and who we are. We are on contract for the highest minimum spec, brand new U.S. image intensifier tubes made by L-3 Warrior Systems and Harris. This means that our “standard spec” is on par with “hand select.”

Why is this important? Because no two night vision image intensifier tubes are created equal. That’s right: every single image intensifier tube is going to be different in spec / aesthetic image. The reason for this is that it’s more accurate to say night vision image tubes are grown than it is to say they are built.

It is impossible to build a perfectly clean image tube. Current production tubes can get close, but not perfect. And just because a tube has a very clean, almost blemish-free appearance, does not mean the performance specs will be anything to celebrate (the same is true for the inverse). The trick is to get a tube that has both high specs and clean image. This is where TNVC’s spec comes in.

How to fix a malfunction on a handgun is probably one of the most contentious issues in the firearms training industry. I was formally taught how to shoot the Beretta 92F back in 1993 while attending Air Force basic training. I think there where 8 or more steps to clearing a failure to extract!

It involved locking the slide to the rear, removing and ditching the magazine, racking the slide 3 times, accessing a new source of ammunition, reinserting the magazine, racking the slide one more time, and then coming back up on target to reassess. I’m in a gunfight!

The U.S. Conference of Mayors met for their 85th Annual Meeting from June 23-26 in sunny Miami Beach, Fla. Continuing a tradition almost as old as the meeting, the assembled mayors schemed on how to prevent the American people from exercising their right to keep and bear arms.

This year, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio put forward a resolution expressing the USCM’s opposition to National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity legislation. The resolution was adopted, with only Mayor Billy Hewes of Gulfport, Miss. and Mayor Kyle Moore of Quincy, Ill. registering their opposition.

Supreme Court Declines to Take Carry Case, but Gorsuch Casts a Solidly Pro-Gun Vote

Gun owners received disappointing news on Monday when the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit that effectively let stand California’s “may-issue” permitting regime. The upshot of this decision is that law-abiding Californians in many areas of the state will be effectively denied the right to “bear” arms in public for self-defense.

But there was a silver lining to this development as Justice Neil M. Gorsuch – President Trump’s pick to replace the late, great Antonin Scalia – came out strongly in favor of the Second Amendment by joining a dissent from the court’s decision penned by Second Amendment stalwart Justice Clarence Thomas. Gorsuch’s participation in the dissent confirmed that he, unlike so many of his colleagues in the federal judiciary, is indeed prepared to take the Second Amendment seriously.

CMP Sales of 1911s One Step Closer With House Passage of 2018 NDAA

On Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2810, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2018. Included in the bill is a provision that would make U.S. Army surplus 1911 .45 ACP pistols available to the American public through the Civilian Marksmanship program (CMP).

In November of 2015, then-President Obama signed the NDAA for Fiscal year 2016 into law with language that authorized the Secretary of Defense to transfer 1911s no longer in service to the CMP for public sale. That language made the transfers subject to the Secretary’s discretion and capped them at 10,000 per year. Unsurprisingly, no actual transfers were made under the program while Obama remained in the White House.

Gun Control Groups: Good at Gloating, Bad at Counting on Advancing National Reciprocity Effort

Apparently, Michael Bloomberg is good at counting money but not so good at counting votes. This week, Breitbart reported that Everytown for Gun Safety, Michael Bloomberg’s gun ban conglomerate, was claiming a “win” for congressional inaction on national right to carry reciprocity.

This just goes to show that not only do gun control advocates not tell the truth, they usually insist on telling the opposite of the truth. The fact is that the momentum behind the national reciprocity effort continues to grow, with the number of co-sponsors on Rep. Richard Hudson’s House bill now at 203 and rapidly approaching the 218 votes needed for passage through the House of Representatives.

Pro-Gun Members of Congress Seek to Protect Veterans, Preserve Historically Significant Firearms

U.S. Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) and U.S. Representative David P. Roe (R-TN) this week introduced bills to create a 180-day amnesty period for veterans or their family members to register historic war mementos that would be considered regulated firearms under the National Firearms Act (NFA).

Pending as S. 1435 and H.R. 3054, both of these bills would apply to items acquired overseas before October 31, 1968. This legislation would allow for the lawful possession and transfer of historically significant armaments and protect veterans from potential criminal liability for purely technical violations of the law that do not endanger public safety.
