Startle the natives in your town with this amazing advertising trick! I love how enthusiastic this ad is about what's basically a sign painted on glass and an electric light. To be fair, it was only seven years since the first public demonstration of outdoor electric light in the US.

How Did A Baseball-Playing Elephant End Up In The Basement Of The Shubert Theater?
In the autumn of 1939, Cincinnati was a happy place. The Reds, after two decades wandering in the baseball wilderness, were back in the World Series, poised to silence the critics who claimed they took the pennant in 1919 only because the Chicago “Black Sox” gave it away. Although Cincinnati lost the first two games in New York, hopes ran high as the hometown team returned to Crosley Field.
The whole town was buzzing. Even the Gayety Burlesque theater added a second show to entertain fans after the games. Joe Goetz, manager of the RKO Shubert Theater, knew he had to come up with a baseball-themed act.
Joe was known for engaging in some wild and crazy gimmicks to get publicity. A few years back, he had some explaining to do when Cincinnati Police, investigating footprints painted all over the downtown sidewalks, discovered the graffiti all led to the Capitol Theater, where Joe was promoting a new movie. Then there was the time Joe staged a duel in the ballroom of the Gibson Hotel. As diners enjoyed a peaceful dinner, two conspirators staged a rowdy argument, pulled out pistols, stood back-to-back, paced off and fired blanks at each other. Joe told Cincinnati Post columnist Si Cornell [23 May 1975]:
“I looked through listings of vaudeville acts, trying to find something for the Shubert during the World Series, and I saw photos of three cute little elephants that played baseball.”
Joe booked the act and, a couple of weeks later a policeman showed up in his office threatening to book Joe on charges of staging a parade without a permit. The elephants – Myrtle, Tilly and Jenny – were being unloaded from trainer Adele Nelson’s van and had completely blocked traffic on Walnut Street. It turned out the pictures in the vaudeville guide were a decade or more old. The cute little elephants had grown into rather hefty behemoths, each weighing north of 5,000 pounds. Joe accepted reality.
“Well, they still played baseball, so I put ‘em on stage. First performance we had a full house with all the visitors in town, and it looks like we’re booked solid for a week.”
Back in the 1930s, you really got your money’s worth when you went to the movies. When Joe Goetz booked the elephant act, he was filling the bill for an evening’s entertainment that featured “The Under Pup,” a new film introducing actress Gloria Jean in a juvenile drama set at a girls’ summer camp. In addition to the movie, fans got to hear John Boles, a singing actor who was heading into the twilight of his career; Sue Ryan, a comedic soprano who parodied the popular songstresses of the day; the Four Franks, a dance troupe; and a gymnastic act, the Gracella Dancers, “three strapping big chaps [who] throw a little blond girl everywhere but into your lap,” according to one reviewer. Naturally, so many acts require the direction of a master of ceremonies and that role was filled by rotund Milton Douglas and his sidekick and foil, Priscilla. All of that for just 60 cents, 40 cents for the matinee performance. The entertainers presented four shows on weekdays and five shows on Saturdays and Sundays.
The sold-out Friday premiere went off without a hitch and the newspaper reviews were almost universally positive. Halfway through an afternoon show, also sold to capacity, the Shubert provided one of the most unusual spectacles ever witnessed on a Cincinnati stage. The Nelson elephants were deep into their baseball routine when according to the Enquirer [7 October 1939]:
“They were near the end of their second performance when a section of the floor began to buckle, throwing Myrtle to her knees. Trumpeting, she rolled over on her side, kicking out a rear foot. She kicked a rafter, which broke. Then the whole section gave way and Myrtle plunged 15 feet to the basement floor. She landed on her side, deluged by water from pipes broken in the fall.”
Tumblr media
The show must go on, of course, and the Gracella Dancers were rushed to the stage, hurling their diminutive ingenue to the periodic wailing of a very confused pachyderm. The Shubert’s evening shows were canceled and a team of carpenters were drafted to cobble together a heavy-duty ramp to extricate Myrtle from the cellar and repair the gaping crater in the stage. Joe Goetz called the Cincinnati Zoo for advice. Si Cornell recalled:
“The carpenters banged away. The Zoo phoned back and said it wasn’t qualified to give advice, its elephants never having been in basements.”
Adele Nelson rushed to the basement with armloads of hay and several loaves of bread, a real treat for her stranded co-star, but could not lure Myrtle up the hastily constructed ramp. Myrtle’s plight attracted celebrity visitors to the Shubert to gape or to offer unsolicited advice, among them screen comedian Joe E. Brown and Frank “Buck” McCormick, the Reds’ first baseman.
Nelson’s husband, Louis E. Reed, suffered his own loss in the accident. He almost plummeted headlong into the basement as Myrtle dropped but was pulled back by a stagehand. Although Reed was safe, his false teeth fell into the hole and Myrtle trampled on them.
The Fire Department sent a rescue team to the theater. Fire Marshal Leo Kuhn called for a wrecker from Engine Company 42. The firemen fitted Myrtle with a rope harness and rigged up a mechanism for leverage, to no avail, according to the Enquirer:
“The fire department placed a block and tackle on her and pulled. Myrtle sat down calmly. It appeared the theater wall would move first.”
Late the next morning, it was John Boles, the headlining star, who came up with the solution. He asked the fire department to run a hose behind Myrtle and to begin spraying her hindquarters. That did the trick. Myrtle walked up the ramp and into the company of Tilly and Jenny.
Although the Shubert management was concerned the act would have to be scratched from the bill, Myrtle and company returned to the stage that afternoon. Per the Enquirer:
“It might be well to mention that Myrtle first had to sniff around the repaired portion of the stage to satisfy herself as to its sturdiness.”
Adele Nelson and her baseball elephants finished the rest of their weeklong engagement at the Shubert. It is not recorded where the human participants in the act stayed while performing in the Queen City, but the elephants enjoyed luxurious quarters at the French Bauer stables on Central Parkway at Plum Street. It must have been quite a sight to see them on their eight-block commute to and from the theater.

The Science of Discovering the Past: Online Collections II
The Institute of Digital Archaeology is a collaboration between Harvard, and Oxford Universities and the Museum of the Future in Dubai with the goal of developing and using digital imaging techniques to preserve at risk artifacts and sites through careful and detailed visual records. Some of the techniques used include the use of 3D cameras by trained volunteers who sought to create a digital record for the possibility of reconstruction of these sites for visitors and for archaeological research without damaging the actual site or in case of its loss. They are also pushing for the return of stolen artifacts, such as the Elgin Marbles, to their home country by replacing them with robot-carved recreations from their images.
Tumblr media
Source: https://digitalarchaeology.org.uk/accessible-archaeology
In addition to these endeavors they also seek to make archaeology more accessible to the blind or partially sited through the installation of tactile exhibitions created through 3D printing. They have exhibits at major locations, such as the New York Public Library and the National Federation of the Blind campus in Baltimore Maryland, United States and with the additional support of the UK's Royal National Institute for the Blind. These exhibitions have large print, braille, and audio guides that explain the display as well as allowing people to touch the exhibits.
They also have a 'Pantangible Project', an effort to maintain or regain the intangible part of culture, comparing it to the fact that '[a] church without a connection to a faith community is merely a building', and that '[s]uccessive generations don't own historic artifacts; they are merely caretakers of these objects with an inherited responsibility to pass them on, together with the ever-evolving human stories they embody, to the next generation', a 'sacred trust' to preserve our collective heritage for everyone.

BOTD: House Finch
Tumblr media
Photo: Larry Hubble
"Adaptable, colorful, and cheery-voiced, House Finches are common from coast to coast today, familiar visitors to backyard feeders. Native to the Southwest, they are recent arrivals in the East. New York pet shop owners, who had been selling the finches illegally, released their birds in 1940 to escape prosecution; the finches survived, and began to colonize the New York suburbs. By 50 years later they had advanced halfway across the continent, meeting their western kin on the Great Plains."

Co-Author: @stclairesplace
A/N: We’re back! Holiday season was crazy and we both got sick but here’s some smut to make up for it!
Tumblr media
New York, Earth-192
"Ready?" Miguel called out as he meticulously adjusted his attire in front of the mirror by the front door.
"Wait!" Felicia's voice echoed from her jewelry room. "I have the perfect earrings for this dress. I know they're here somewhere!"
Miguel couldn't help but chuckle as he rolled up the sleeves of his tight white button-up shirt. "You were the one who insisted on leaving early for the hors d'oeuvres," he playfully teased.
Felicia's frustration was evident as she continued rummaging through her jewelry, determined to find the right accessories for the evening. "I can't show up to an art gala looking like this!" she huffed.
Just as she voiced her concern, a polite but urgent knock sounded at their front door, disrupting the couple's preparations.
"Babe, can you get the door?" Felicia called from the jewelry room, where boxes and accessories were strewn about in disarray.
Miguel smiled as he made his way to the door. Once it opened, he was met with a familiar face, one he’d studied many times before.
"Oh!" The woman at the door jumped in surprise, her eyes darting to the numbers next to the doorframe. "Do I have the wrong address?" She pondered, her brow furrowing in confusion.
Miguel maintained his composure, trying to keep the conversation polite. "Can I help you, ma'am?"
The woman's frown deepened as she studied Miguel. "I'm looking for a Felicia Hardy," she explained, her voice tinged with uncertainty.
Before Miguel could respond, Felicia came bustling down the hallway and around the corner, slipping into her sleek black heels.
"Ready!" she exclaimed, a hint of breathlessness in her voice.
As soon as she came into view of the door, Felicia stopped in her tracks, feeling her heart pounding in her chest.
"Felicia!"
"May?" Her voice quivered with surprise. "W-What are you doing here?"
Aunt May brushed past Miguel, her arms enveloping Felicia in a warm, comforting hug. Her voice was filled with genuine concern as she said, "Oh, honey, I heard what happened."
Miguel, standing nearby, could see the distress written all over Felicia's face. Although he was ready to intervene and save her from this potentially awkward situation, he understood that this was something Felicia needed to go through. He watched, his heart heavy with empathy for the woman he cared deeply for. His presence was a silent support, ready to be called upon if necessary.
Aunt May broke the hug, her hands gently cupping Felicia's face. "You two are meant to be together, sweetheart, you'll get through it." Her words were filled with conviction and a kind, maternal assurance that tugged at Felicia's heart.
Felicia felt overwhelmed as a storm of questions flooded her mind. She stammered, struggling to grasp what was happening. "W- What are you talking about, May?"
With a deep frown, Aunt May explained, "Peter told me you two broke up. I'm here to help you through your crisis." Her eyes were filled with compassion and understanding.
Felicia's thoughts were racing, trying to make sense of the situation. "W-what... what crisis?"
Aunt May drew her into another comforting hug, expressing her support. "Aw, honey, you don't have to hide it from me. We're family." She held Felicia close, offering reassurance and understanding.
“How about we sit.” Felica said as she guided her to the couch. Miguel watched from a distance, ready to offer his support when she needed it most. Felicia felt a wave of relief as she settled into a chair. She took a deep breath and looked at Aunt May, her eyes filled with a mixture of confusion and hope. "I'm very lost right now. Can we start over?"
Aunt May nodded her expression kind and understanding. She held Felicia's hands in hers, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Of course, dear. Peter and I had our Sunday brunch today, and he told me you two broke up." She paused, her voice filled with concern. "He told me you were having a crisis and needed time, that's why I'm here."
As she rummaged through her purse, Aunt May's warm smile returned, and her eyes softened. She pulled out a familiar Tupperware container. "I brought you that dessert you like." She placed it on the table, a small gesture of comfort and care.
“May,” Felicia’s voice filled with regret. “I’m not having a crisis.” Aunt May’s eyebrow quirks in confusion. “I’m very happy, May.” She smiles, glancing at Miguel who stands across the room.
“Well, it seems like I’m lost now.”
“I’m sorry, I know this is going to be hard to hear, but Peter and I broke up months ago.” Aunt May’s jaw slacks as she takes in the new information. “We broke up in the summer when he started seeing MJ… It’s winter now, I’ve moved on.”
Aunt May’s gaze shifts down. “He can’t be with MJ, she’s still across the country.”
Felicia bites her lip, feeling a tinge of guilt for destroying her image of her perfect nephew. “She moved back last May. We broke up in June.”
A tear escapes Aunt May. “Really?”
Felicia nods. “I tried. We got back together at least four times during the summer, but… It didn’t work out. I’m sorry.”
“But you two were meant to be together! We bought you a ring in May! He had a whole proposal planned!”
Felicia could feel her heartache. “I’m sorry,” was all she was able to say.
Meanwhile, Miguel’s blood was boiling at the interaction. He wondered how many people Peter had lied to, how long he pretended they were together. Even thinking of the possibility of Felicia saying “yes” to him, and accepting marriage gave him chills. It enraged him all the more.
Felicia listened to May's words with a mix of emotions, her eyes welling up with tears. She appreciated May's understanding and sympathy. As the tears began to flow down her cheeks, she took solace in May's comforting presence.
"I'm so sorry he didn't tell you. But if you would have seen him, how he acted with me as time went on, you'd understand," Felicia confessed.
A few tears trickled down May's cheek, and she looked deeply pained. "I'm so sorry, dear. For whatever he did to you, well, I—" Her voice trembled with emotion.
Felicia reached out and touched May's hand. "It's not your fault, May. Nothing was."
May opened her arms, and Felicia moved to hug her, finding comfort in the maternal embrace. She gently stroked her hair and cheek before letting her go.
"Peter maybe my nephew, and he may be one of the brightest kids that I know. But he is the stupidest boy to ever let a woman like you go. I hope you two can reconcile one day," May expressed her sentiments.
Felicia hesitated for a moment before saying, "I don't think so. I've moved on. I'm in a relationship now, and I'm really happy." She offered a grateful smile. Aunt May nodded understandingly, "Thank you for everything, May."
The two women stood and made their way to the door. Felicia escorted May out and assured her that she hadn't ruined anything special.
May clasp her hands over Felicia's. "Well, then I'm glad, dear. And who's that tall Greek sculpture sulking in the corner?" May raised an inquisitive eyebrow, gesturing to Miguel.
Felicia smiled and beckoned Miguel over. "This is my—"
"Boyfriend," Miguel interjected with a warm smile, extending his hand to shake May's. She shook his hand and smiled coyly.
"I see..." May took a moment to assess Miguel. "Well, aren't you a sight for sore eyes?"
"Thank you very much," Miguel replied, wrapping his arm around Felicia's waist. He kissed her cheek and added, "I'm a lucky man."
May continued to smile and delivered a low response, "Indeed you are."
She then turned her attention back to Felicia giving her a wink.
"Are you sure you don't need help getting home?" Felicia held the door open for May.
"No, no, dear. You kids enjoy your night. I can handle myself just fine. Goodbye, Felicia. I hope to see you again soon." With a wave, May left the apartment.
Felicia closed the door behind her, letting out a sigh as if she were releasing the pent-up tension from her visit with Aunt May.
"Are you alright, baby?" Miguel's voice came from behind as he stepped forward, wrapping his strong arms around her waist.
She turned in his arms, burying her face into his chest. "I don't know," she mumbled, her words muffled against his shirt.
Miguel's expression turned stern as he said, "I'm gonna kick Peter out of the Spider Society." His tone was filled with frustration.
Felicia pulled back slightly, looking up into Miguel's now-raging red eyes. "No, you can't," she replied softly, her voice filled with concern.
"I can and I will," Miguel asserted, his determination unwavering.
Felicia hesitated before responding, "As shitty of a boyfriend he was, he's a good Spider-Man. I don't wanna be the reason he isn't part of the Spider Society." She frowned.
Miguel's hand came up to cup her cheek, his fiery eyes locking onto hers. "Is that what you want?" he asked, his voice softer.
Felicia nodded, her eyes reflecting her decision. "Alright, mi vida," Miguel sighed. "But if he fucks up at all, I'll have to deal with him."
“Alright, big boy, whatever you want.” She teases, patting his broad chest.
“Whatever I want?” His voice turns from soft to seductive, sending a chill down Felicia’s spine.
“Mmhmm.” She hums as she begins to bite her lip.
Miguel leans down, letting his lips brush against her ear. “And what if I wanna fuck you against that window right there?”
Felicia slightly gulps at the sudden boldness.
“What- what about our date?”
Miguel smirks, his voice low and seductive. "Who said we can't have a little fun before our date?" He trails his fingers lightly along Felicia's arm, sending shivers down her spine. "I need all of New York to watch me claim that perfect little pussy of yours."
Felicia's heart skips a beat as Miguel's possessive tone sends a mix of excitement and apprehension through her.
She tries to speak, but her words catch in her throat as she feels the intensity of his gaze. "Miguel," she manages to say, her voice barely above a whisper. "What’s gotten into you? Was it- was it May’s visit? Are you mad or something?" Her eyes search his face, hoping to find understanding.
Miguel's expression tightens, a flicker of jealousy crossing his features. He cups her face gently, his touch both tender and firm. "Felicia, you're mine," he says huskily, his voice tinged with possessiveness. "I won't let anyone else have you."
His words send a jolt of desire through her, but also a pang of concern. “This wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that Peter was planning to propose to me, does it? Because I would’ve said no, Miguel.”
“Is that so, gatita?”
"I belong to you, Miguel," she says softly, placing her hand over his. "And I choose to be with you, trust me."
Miguel's eyes only darken as he gazes into hers, his possessiveness tempered by a glimmer of protectiveness.
A smirk grows on her red-painted lips and spreads across her face, as she steps closer to him, her hand traveling up around his shoulders. “Miggy,” She looks up at him through her eyelashes, “I think you’re jealous.”
Miguel swallows the saliva harshly in his throat. “I am not jealous. I am -”
“No, no don’t hide it from me, baby,” Felicia leans up on her tiptoes, bringing her lips to hover over his as she grabs his chin to face him with her thumb and forefinger. She whispers against his lips in a sultry tone, “I like it when you're jealous. I like that possessive look in your eyes when someone else looks at me, or the fact that it makes you do the most unholy things to me afterwards.” She bites her lip to conceal the breaking of her character. Maintaining lust-heavy eyes, she guides towards the window, practically daring Miguel to follow.
Miguel never breaks contact with her, knowing that she wants him to take her bait. He takes a deep breath before slowly following Felicia, each step slow and intricate as if sneaking up on his prey. “You wanna hear something unholy, mi vida?” Felicia nods her head with a bite of her lip. “I want you to take off all your clothes, slowly, piece by piece, and I want you standing naked in the living room begging for me to touch you and fuck you and mark you as mine. Because no one can make you feel as good as me, and make you cum so hard that you can’t even see straight, or stand up properly.”
Felicia lets out a sharp breath, watching how the muscles in his broad shoulders move with each step as he stalks towards her.
Once Miguel finally reaches Felicia, his hand gripping her hip to pull her body flush against his, the other sliding into her platinum hair, exposing her neck to him. He watches as her breathing quickens, her breasts just peeking out from the straps of her dress.
She lets out a breath, then a moan as he leans his head down to the side of her neck, whispering in her ear, “And no one like Peter Parker, or some irritating cowboy is going to come between us and take you away from me, because baby girl, you are mine.”
“Fuckin’ hell you turn me on, baby.” Felicia whines as he nips her neck, and not gently. She feels as he moves his hands, sliding up and down her body, squeezing her curves and kneading the soft skin of her ass.
Miguel speaks up again, “And I’m gonna fuck you against that window, so everyone can see me make love to the Goddess that I get to call mine.” Before Felicia can wrap her head around Miguel’s words he picks her up by the waist, practically throwing her against the thick glass of his living room window.
Miguel pressed their bodies against the window with such intensity that she was surprised it didn’t crack on the impact. Miguel's hands traced the curves of Felicia's body with reverence, his fingertips leaving trails of molten desire. She arched her back, surrendering herself to the intoxicating sensations that danced along her skin. Their lips met in a passionate embrace, their mouths hungry for more than just a simple kiss. Every touch, every caress sent shivers down their spines, igniting a fire within that consumed their beings. As they kissed her legs wrapped around his waist to keep from falling, his hands only leaving her so he could reach around her back to zip her dress off her body. Felicia couldn't help but let out a moan as she felt his hand slide down her back, using his claw to quickly tear through the clasp of her bra and let it fall to the floor.
As they kissed, their breaths mingled, forming a symphony of heavy sighs and whispered moans. Miguel's tongue gently teased Felicia's lower lip, seeking entrance to her mouth. She willingly granted him access, losing herself in the sweet chaos of their tongues fighting for dominance. Felicia reached down to Miguel's chest, taking hold of his shirt and ripping the buttons from the smooth material, throwing it to the other side of the room as she claws Miguel’s now bare chest. He groaned as she raked her nails over his exposed skin, claiming at his chest and then traveling up his torso to tangle her finger in his hair. She murmured something against his lips as she continued to kiss him, Miguel almost missing it from the sounds they were making.
“What did you say?” he asks her heavily panting. Felicia murmured, “I said take them off, Miggy, please -”
“Are we begging already, baby girl?” Miguel cuts her off with a smirk, admiring how she struggles to take off his pants, using the heels of her feet to push down on the waistband while hanging onto his neck and shoulders so she doesn’t fall from his grip.
“Say it again sweetheart,” his lips molding with Felicia’s in a bruising kiss. “Beg for me,” he husks as he nips her chin. “Beg for my cock.”
“Pretty please Miguel, fuck me against this window until the glass shatters,” she breathed heavily.
It didn’t take anything else to hold Miguel back. He kept one hand securely fit around her, sliding the other down the trail of her stomach until he reached the inside of her panties. At first, he teases a finger in just rubbing her clit in small circles, feeling her wetness before fully inserting his finger inside her.
Without any warning on the motion from Miguel, she let out a long sigh out moan, in pure bliss at the contact of finally being touched where she needed him most.
“You’re so wet for me, baby. You like what I’m doing to you?” Felicia can only moan in his neck, biting his shoulder in reply. Miguel grunts at the pinch of her love bite, not expecting to feel both her nails and her teeth marking him all at once.
“You want my cock hermosa? You want me to take you as mine?” Miguel’s lips press against her ear, sending chills down to her core. “Wanna feel my cock so deep inside of you? Make you cum harder than he ever could?”
Felicia lifts her head from his shoulder, letting out a whine. Her hips buck from the lost contact when he pulls out his finger. “Beg me, Felicia.”
“I need your cock, Mig, please,” she sighs.
“No no no, princess, louder. I want the neighbors to hear you begging for me to fuck you so good.”
She smirks at his dominance, raising her head to look into his eyes with lust-heavy eyes. “I want you to fuck me, Miguel. Please please fuck me, baby, I need you inside me.”
“Good girl,” without much warning, Miguel’s claws tear Felicia’s thin lace panties before plunging his cock inside of her. She lets out a loud moan at the sudden contact and the feel of him stretching her walls so good.
As soon as she adjusts he starts thrusting into her at a rapid pace, her ass bouncing back and forth on his cock and the cold glass window behind her.
Nothing has turned her on so much.
Still thrusting Miguel takes her wrists, raising them above her head, and slams them not the window above her head, with a firm, “Stay there”.
His hands grip her waist now, guiding her rolling hips to meet his in every thrust he makes, making them both unleash the most breathy and sinful noises out of their mouths at the new angle.
“Fuck,” she sighs, feeling him pound that sensitive spot.
“You like that?” Miguel growls. “My good girl’s taking every inch so fucking good, aren’t you?” He coos between pants. All Felicia could do was drunkenly nod, but it wasn't enough. “Words.” He demands.
“Miguel,” she moans, “I’m gonna cum”. She peers through her eyes to meet his, a stern look on his brow and a few beads of sweat rolling down his forehead.
“You’re gonna cum when I say you’re gonna cum,” She smiles, feeling her heart flutter and her body tingle with anticipation. She nodded, her voice barely a whisper, "Yes, Sir."
She could feel his grip tighten on her hips as he thrust his hips harder and faster. His breathing grew heavier, and she knew he was coming closer and closer to his release.
“Hold it.” He gunts, picking up his pace.
Felicia whined as she struggled to keep herself from cumming. Miguel moans as her walls squeeze his cock even harder, begging to release.
“Mig-”
“No.” He pants his thrusts becoming more erratic. “I want all of New York to know you-” thrust “are” thrust “mine” thrust.
“I can’t h-hold it pl-please!” Felicia’s nails dig into Miguel’s back imprinting on his skin.
“Cum for me baby,” Her head falls back against the glass as she lets out a gasp. Miguel’s arms wrap around Felicia’s body, pulling her as close as possible as their bodies shudder with pleasure.
After a moment, their breathing becomes heavy and ragged. Miguel’s forehead presses softly against Felicia’s allowing them to look into each other's tired eyes. If she was quiet enough, she could hear his heart pounding with hers. Once he regains a steading breath, Miguel presses a tender kiss to her forehead before slowly pulling out.
With utmost care, Miguel cradled Felicia's head in his hands, treating her as delicately as if she were a porcelain doll before gliding back to the bedroom.
As soon as they reach the room, Miguel gently lays her down on his bed watching Felicia stretch out, feeling the post-orgasmic contentment wash over her. She notices how he turns his body as he motions to leave the room again. She reaches out and places a hand on the arm to stop him.
“Where are you going?, she asks, about to sit up before Miguel politely pushes her shoulders back down to lay on the bed again.
“Just getting a towel to clean you up baby, I’ll be right back.” He walks towards the bathroom turning back to her with a playful pointing finger, saying “stay” before turning down the hall.
Lying back on the bed, Felicia surrendered herself to a wave of relaxation and exhaustion. With a deep breath, she let out a soft moan, a reflexive response as she replayed the events that had just transpired. Miguel reenters the room, towel in hand, ready to clean up, prompting Felicia’s eyes to open. He gently wipes off her inner thighs, feeling the smooth texture of her skin as he pulls the towel away. Felicia smiles widely at Miguel while he does so, he looks up to notice the smirk on Felicia’s face as she watches him clean her.
Miguel chuckles and looks back down at her, “What’s got you smiling, Miss Hardy?”
Felicia coyly smiles and leans up on her elbows to look at him, “I just like looking at you when you concentrated, your brow all furrowed and your eyes squinting as you concentrate on something. You always look so grumpy, it’s cute.”
Miguel raises his eyebrow at her, making a strange face as if he’s trying to “smolder”, “This eyebrow?” he questions.
Felicia nods her head, giggling softly at him as he walks away again to discard the towel. He comes back not even a minute later, jumping on the bed next to Felicia, immediately pulling the covers over them, and pulling her next to him so her back lies against his chest. He nuzzles her neck, breathing in her scent, his hands stroking her hair. Felicia relaxes against him, her breathing slowing as her body responds to his touch. He leans in and kisses her neck, his lips lingering for a few moments before she speaks. “So much for that date, huh?”
“I was really looking forward to going to the gala,” Felicia sighs. “You just had to ruin it.” She teases.
“We could still go.” Miguel’s fingers caress her skin, practically lulling her to sleep.
“Ahuh.” She rolls her eyes with a soft chuckle.
Felicia cozies into Miguel’s arms as she watches the lights of the city shimmer beyond her window.
“How does 20 minutes sound?”
“Huh?” Felicia turns her head to look at her naked man.
“Is 20 minutes enough time to relax before I eat that pretty pussy out like it’s my last meal?” Miguel smirks.
“You sure that's enough time for you, old timer?” Felicia hums, watching Miguel’s eyes darken.
“Old timer?” He scoffs as he moves over her to settle between Felicia’s legs. “You’re gonna regret that.”

[2] The World Wrestling Entertainment phenomenon is immense, both internationally and within the United States. WWE is consistently in the top ten daily searches globally on Yahoo’s Buzz Index and other search engines. The official site of World Wrestling Entertainment, http://www.wwe.com, receives within the United States alone a monthly average of 7.7 million unique visitors and a daily average of 517,000 unique visitors, according to a six-month survey done by Omniture SiteCatalyst from October 2006 to March 2007. Within the United States it had a monthly average of 214.4 million page views, a daily average of 7 million page views, a monthly average of 16.2 million video streams, and an average of 524,000 video streams per day. The WWE audience, according to a study conducted in May 2006 by Forrester Consulting, is 86 percent male, with an average age of twenty-four. Thirty-six percent are ages twelve to seventeen, and 40 percent are ages eighteen to thirty-four. Forty-one percent are students. Sixty-two percent of the males eighteen to thirty-four are employed full time. According to http://www.quantcast.com, 81 percent access wwe.com daily or several times a week. Fifty-seven percent have no college education. Twenty-six percent have an annual income of $30,000 or less, and another 30 percent make between $30,000 and $60,000. Fifty-one percent have children aged six to seventeen. Sixty-four percent are Caucasian, 14 percent African American, and 16 percent Hispanic.

Your guide to California policy and politics

COVID-19 variant in CA, right on time for summer spike
Tumblr media

Stanford scientists have recently confirmed California’s first known infection of a highly transmissible COVID-19 variant, known as NB.1.8.1. Detected in the state as early as April 17, its symptoms do not appear to be any more severe than earlier strains so far, and because NB.1.8.1 is an Omicron variant, the latest vaccines should provide some immunity.
But NB.1.8.1 is more infectious: The strain has been spreading throughout Asia and Europe, and is responsible for the latest surge of infections in China. In addition to California, it has been reported in international visitors traveling through airports in Washington, New York and Virginia. Separate from airport travelers, the variant has also been reported in Ohio, Rhode Island and Hawaii.
Amid news of this latest strain, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it will limit COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to people ages 65 and older, and people who are at high risk for severe infections. In an article published last week in The New England Journal of Medicine, FDA officials said that “the benefit of repeat dosing — particularly among low-risk persons … is uncertain.”
Historically the vaccine has been available to almost all people ages 6 months and older, and the new policy means that the FDA is no longer recommending the vaccine to healthy children and pregnant women. The FDA is led by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has had a history of spreading widely debunked anti-vaccination views.
The FDA’s rule change comes two months after the California Department of Public Health said that President Donald Trump’s administration terminated more than $700 million in public health grants related to COVID-19 response.
Though there is no longer a pandemic, infections do tend to spike during the summer, with California seeing some of its highest surges last summer. More than 101,000 Californians have died from COVID-19 and more than 1 million Americans have died — exceeding by a wide margin American service member casualties in every war combined.

Other Stories You Should Know
Kicking Californians off Medi-Cal?
Tumblr media

Gov. Gavin Newsom has proposed reinstating a limit on assets for Medi-Cal enrollees. Critics are concerned doing so would keep thousands of low-income seniors and disabled people from having vital health coverage, writes CalMatters’ Kristen Hwang.
California last year eliminated its cap on how much in assets a person could own to qualify for Medi-Cal. That led to an unanticipated number of people enrolling for Medical, according to the Newsom administration.
So, amid multibillion-dollar budget deficits for both the state and Medi-cal, the governor wants to bring back an asset limit which was originally set in 1989: $2,000 for individuals 65 and older, as well as those with disabilities. Among other things, assets include life insurance, cash on hand, savings accounts and even owning some funeral plots.
Newsom said the proposal would save the state $94 million this year and $500 million the next. But those opposed say it would create a financial cliff for those about to turn 65, and that it’s nearly impossible to live with just $2,000 in assets in California — especially if you must pay costly medical expenses.

Housing prices contribute to transit woes
Tumblr media

Public transit systems across California are facing a “fiscal cliff,” and there are a number of reasons why ridership is down: Aging transit infrastructure, more people are owning cars and a lack of robust, on-going investment from state and federal governments, to name a few.
But as CalMatters’ Ben Christopher explains, there is another, less obvious reason: California’s housing affordability crisis.
In neighborhoods located in Los Angeles and Orange counties that have reliable buses and trains systems, transit ridership tended to decrease where rents were rising, according to a 2024 study by UCLA researchers. At South L.A. Chinatown, for example, average rents went up $379 and transit use fell by 21%. In a part of San Fernando Valley’s Pacoima, rent was up $305, ridership was down 28%.
The findings suggest that gentrification — in addition to widening economic inequalities — displaces some residents who rely on transit systems. When they move to other neighborhoods where the transit system may not be as good, they are pushed further away from their jobs, leading to more driving, more traffic and more pollution.

And lastly: Trump freezes grants for LA clean trucks

As part of an effort to claw back billions of dollars in green energy funding, the Trump administration has frozen $250 million in grants to a nonprofit helping companies replace diesel trucks at the L.A. and Long Beach ports. CalMatters’ Alejandro Lazo and video strategy director Robert Meeks have a video segment on the legal dispute as part of our partnership with PBS SoCal. Watch it here.

✅Connie Turn Ons/Offs🚩
After yesterday's post about her chemistry with each Scrooge, I realized she has a lot of things she likes, as well as some icks, that I’ve never put to paper.
So, for another fun writing exercise:
(Info under cut, rated 16+ for innuendo and non-explicit sexual details)
Turn-Ons ✅
-Awkwardness. It’s her biggest green flag. Not that she doesn’t love a suave man, but a man who stumbles over his words a bit or blushes when he sees her, it MELTS her. Nobody pretends to be awkward (not usually, anyway) so she perceives someone as being more genuine if they stammer a bit or get tongue-tied.
-Suaveness. Both can exist in tandem, haha. Just like she finds awkwardness endearing, suaveness also sweeps her off her feet. Maybe it’s a smooth kiss, or seamlessly helping her avoid paparazzi, or maybe it’s flipping her over in bed like she is featherlight. That gets her going, for sure.
-Higher Libido. Connie herself has a below average libido. She definitely has one, but it’s not as pressing of a need for her to function. So, having a partner with a higher libido, or even an average one, kind of helps her feel a little more healthy about sex. It balances things out, so to speak. It stops things from feeling stagnant, for her. She finds it attractive when her partner pulls her aside and says, “I’m in the mood, and tonight, I want to be with you, if you’d like that too.”
-Touch. Connie’s love languages are touch and words of affirmation, so touch is big for her. Hugs, kisses, hand-holding, even her partner’s hand just lingering on her waist? She adores it. Even platonically, she’ll hug her friends, or kiss their hands during hard sobbing sessions. After Orin, it’s a little bit like trying to touch a wounded deer, but she relearns to trust and will SINK into an embrace like nobody’s business.
-Good Listening. Connie literally doesn’t care if someone is introverted or extroverted. Hell, she grew up with a talkative mother and a nonverbal father. It’s good listening that matters. She tries to do it, and if she sees her partner is giving her undivided attention and truly listening, she definitely notes it positively.
-Leadership. A partner to guides the way and paves a path for her will make her swoon. When she was a socialite in New York with Orin, she was tasked with always planning everything alone. Having someone that takes responsibility off her shoulders willingly, and gives her credit for all the work she does? It would move her to tears.
-Body Hair. Girl loves body hair on her partner. Not much else to say, haha. It also inspires her to no obsess over waxing and shaving twice a day, every day.
Neutral⬜️
-Size. She honestly doesn’t care. Three inches or 10, she cares more about the visitor than the package they bring.
Turn-Offs 🚩
-Abusive Behavior. When she married Orin, she thought he was a loving, scrappy young man with a tenacity for life and a mind for finance. Instead, she got a controlling lunatic who used her for his own status elevation, and participated in a group assault on her on their wedding night. She was gaslit into thinking she ruined him, not that he was actively trying to ruin her for his own gain.
-Possessive Behavior. You know dirty talk that veers into, “I just want to lock you up and keep you to myself” or “I saw you talking to that other man - you’re mine, remember?” Nope. Noooope. Not for her. Even if it's roleplay.
-Public Grand Gestures in her Honor. So, Connie likes parties. Clubs. Dancing. She LOVES big events, like balls and galas. HOWEVER. She gets super uncomfortable when something huge and public is done FOR HER. Orin’s public proposal in a bar? No. A huge surprise party filled with people she doesn’t know? Super stressful. You want to erect a new library in her name? Please no, name it something more meaningful to the community. She doesn’t need the flattery from people she doesn’t know. You know in “The Little Mermaid” when Eric saw a statue of himself? Those vibes.
-Thinking Hygiene is Overrated. She is not a woman that’s impressed by “I use one bar of soap for everything”. Nope. If someone can’t take care of themselves and keep their body/living space clean and maintained, she’s not interested. She also isn’t deterred by partners who use a lot of beauty/hygiene products. She doesn’t find it weird or ‘too feminine’.
-Voyeurism. Especially nonconsensual voyeurism. She already deals with paparazzi and photogs enough. She doesn't want it in her private life.

May 1941: Fishing in Oregon
Tumblr media
Caption: Farmer Clark Gable and wife Carole Lombard relaxed between films for MGM on Gable’s 20 acre ranch at Encino. Carole’s first husband was William Powell. She now expects her first child, which is also Gable‘s first, although he was married twice previously. Gable has the distinction of being a “step grandfather.“ At 22 he married Josephine Dillon, his voice coach, at 29 divorced her. He then married wealthy divorcee  Rhea Langham, who had two children by an earlier marriage. One is married and a mother, making Rhea a grandmother. She divorced Gable in March 1939, and a fortnight later he was married to Carole. (May 25, 1941 – The Daily Telegraph)
May 3, 1941 – The Buffalo News
Gable, the Onion Eater
Clark Gable call his wife “Mammy.“ She calls him “Pappy.“ The world‘s attention has been called to the fact that Gable snores in his sleep, prefers old shirts and baggy trousers and tinkering an automobile and fishing tackle to dressing up and taking Carole to the bright night spots.
A movie one night a week and dinner out is the height of the Gables’ social activities. Carole admits they spend most of their evenings at home, reading the newspapers and listening to the radio – and Clark loves onions on his hamburgers – which is hardly conducive to romance.
May 4, 1941 – The San Francisco Examiner
Among Clark Gable’s and Carole Lombard‘s most fervent prayers is the wish that nothing will happen to upset their vacation plans. For Clark, as soon as he finishes his role “The Uniform,” and Carole, who will also be free by that time, have planned a short fishing trip into Mexico, after which they will return to their Encino ranch and just rest.
May 5, 1941 – The Daily Clintonian
Remember Movita, who played in “Mutiny On The Bounty” and who afterwards married Jack Doyle, and went to live in England?
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard have just received a letter from her. She said she was injured slightly in an air raid last October, but that her narrowest escape was more recent – a bomb struck the back of the theater while she and Doyle were on the stage.
May 9, 1941 – The Fresno Bee
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard leave for New York within the next few weeks. Their denial that they are expecting the stork still doesn’t seem to down the rumors.
May 12, 1941– The Capital Journal
Clark Gable Fishing On River
Grants Pass, Oregon, May 12 – Salmon fishermen in boats and perched on fishing piers lining the Rogue River saw merely two more visiting anglers in a boat with a local guide today. But the resort register and angling license stubs revealed that the couple are Carole Lombard and Clark Gable, top-flight movie stars. Gable has been a frequent visitor for steelhead fishing.
May 13, 1941 – The Press Democrat
Gable, Lombard Stop in S.R. on Vacation Outing
Hollywood’s number one he-man heartthrob – Clark Gable – and his wife, the beauteous Carole Lombard, were in Santa Rosa Saturday night and Sunday morning, but only a few Santa Rosans recognized them – and those didn’t have their autograph albums handy.
Traveling by station wagon on a three weeks’ outing trip, the Gables are bound for Redwood Empire fishing grounds. They arrived at midnight Saturday and stopped at the Llano Auto Courts, 2400 Redwood Highway S., according to Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Bassett, owners of the courts.
The party included, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Flischman of Santa Monica. Sunday morning the party had breakfast at the Students’ Inn, opposite the high school, before leaving for their northern destination.
May 15, 1941 – The Humboldt Times
Woods Not Wild Enough For Pair
Grants Pass, May 14 – Oregon wilderness isn’t wild enough for Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, the handsome screen actor complained tonight.
He said that he was satisfied with fishing on the Rogue River, but that he and Miss Lombard would leave if his casts for trout don’t quit producing autograph hunters.
They are just a happy married couple seeking a vacation and wish that the public would let them rest, the Gables stated in newspapers and radio broadcasts tonight.
May 16, 1941 – Medford Mail Tribune
Gable And Wife Give Up Fishing
Grants Pass, May 16 – They’re fishing luck in the muddy  Rogue River poor, Clark Gable and his wife, blonde Carole Lombard, left Thursday noon for coast streams.
“We’ll be back in the fall for the steelheads,” they promised a group of Oregon Caveman who presented them jawbone passports as they headed via the Redwood Highway to Crescent City. Gable drove the station wagon.
May 25, 1941 – The Minneapolis Star
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard are mad about hunting and fishing as you know. The moment they get time off, they take out for the backcountry, usually Mexico, in their deluxe station wagon, which latter they often have to abandon on some impassable road for an overnight hike, packing their own equipment and sleeping under canvas… Now they’re somewhere in Oregon, looking for a real paying farm to take care of them in their old age. I can’t quite picture Carole as a farm hand can you? But, “What’s good enough for Gable is good enough for me,” says Carole.
May 25, 1941 – The Des Moines Register
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard are taking their farming more seriously than ever. They’re looking for a ranch in Oregon now.
May 27, 1941 – Corpus Christi Times
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard have returned from a motoring trip up the coast to Oregon and Washington in their station wagon and they say it was the best vacation they’ve had in years. Although neither attempted any disguise, the movie fans of the Pacific Northwest, if they recognized the stars, didn’t bother them with their requests to pose for snapshots or to sign autographs.
“We stayed in auto courts and traveling men’s hotels, and it was fun,” Miss Lombard said.
May 29, 1941 – San Fernando Valley Times
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard leave soon for a two-week vacation through Northern California and central Oregon with a few stops in Nevada. The stars are using their Ford pickup truck, which is packed with fishing equipment, as they plan to stop en route, camping along the way to enjoy the fishing.
May 29, 1941 – St. Louis Post Dispatch
Clark Gable and Carole Lombard are due back from their four-week vacation. Clark will no more than get the station wagon in the garage than MGM will be on the phone yelping for him to do preliminary scenes with Lana Turner for “Honky Tonk.”
May 29, 1941 – Evening Star
Sheilah Graham: Carole Lombard and her doctor say that the stork will make a December landing at the Gable home. Carole has canceled all engagements and, on medical advice, will take life very easily for the next few months. “It would be wonderful if I had twins,” says Carole.
May 30, 1941 – The Cincinnati Enquirer
Carole Lombard, who has been reported seriously ill in other columns, writes from Lake Meade where she and Clark Gable are fishing that she has never felt better in her life…
May 30, 1941 – The Newcastle Sun
First visitor on the set of “The Uniform” was Carole Lombard, who spent the day watching her husband, Clark Gable, play his initial scenes in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film. In these scenes, Clark had to make love to Rosalind Russell.
May 31, 1941 – The Los Angeles Times
… Carole Lombard grinning apologetically at the Hollywood and Vine traffic cop as her car rolls too far into the intersection…
May 31, 1941 – The Daily Clintonian
Those rumors are going around again about Carole Lombard being ill, but her intimates vehemently deny it. They say she never has been in better health. The star’s recent movements bear this out. She drove to Grant’s Pass, Ore., with Clark able to look at a ranch and, while up there, went on several fishing trips. Then she and Gable left for Boulder Dam and Lake Mead. They are planning other jaunts on Clark’s three-month vacation after he finishes “Honky Tonk.“ Incidentally, they are dead on the level about looking for a ranch. And they want to buy a big one.

Rating: 3.5/5
Book Blurb:
From the New York Times and internationally bestselling author of A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow, this novel follows two Cuban teens in LA’s Echo Park neighborhood who clash over their visions for the future, the secrets between their families…and the sparks flying between them.
Seventeen-year-old Clary is set to inherit her family’s florist shop, La Rosa Blanca—one of the last remnants of the Cuban business district that once thrived in Los Angeles’s Echo Park neighborhood. Clary knows Echo Park is where she’ll leave a legacy, and nothing is more important to her than keeping the area’s unique history alive.
Besides Clary’s florist shop, there’s only one other business left founded by Cuban immigrants fleeing Castro’s regime in the sixties and seventies. And Emilio, who’s supposed to take over Avalos Bicycle Works one day, is more flight risk than dependable successor. While others might find Emilio appealing, Clary can see him itching to leave now that he’s graduated, and she’ll never be charmed by a guy who doesn’t care if one more Echo Park business fades away.
But then Clary is caught off guard when an unexpected visitor delivers a shocking message from someone she thought she’d left behind. Meanwhile, Emilio realizes leaving home won’t be so easy—and Clary, who has always been next door, is who he confides in. As the summer days unfold, they find there’s something stronger than local history tying them together.
Review:
When a seventeen year old florist life is thrown for a loop by a visit from her half sister (which she had no clue she had) and the fact that many of the other Cuban immigrant founded businesses around her are gone. Clary is determined to inherit her family's florist shop and leave behind a legacy. She's determined to keep the stronghold of her family's business and the only other Cuban founded business around is the bicycle shop where Emilio, a charming flighty boy works. Emilio is determined to leave his family's bicycle shop after he graduates and Clary doesn't understand why he would want to. Clary and Emilio begin spending time together and sharing their secrets as both their lives are getting more difficult. Yet as they start falling for one another, can a romance really work between a boy who wants to go and a girl who is determined to stay? This story deals a lot with family, community, guilt, and secrets. The romance was sweet overall but the emphasis on the community and family aspect of this book was what made it really well done. I liked that it was a sweet read overall and that the community and culture is shown throughout the book.
