I think because of how abused and bullied Priscilla has been because she dumped the white boyfriend in the rural Berry City of Alabama. Very small town backwoods. I've never seen a place so small that the elementary school is in a big asphalt area right next to the Middle School/ high School

These are people who grew up together who might be related genetically. They've lived there forever. There's not been a lot of people come into the area and then my rainforest Indian friends move there to feel safe from a slum district in a big city with lots of drugs compared to this area. They wanted to protect their children because children were being lost to drugs and alcohol and cigarette smoking in their neighborhood

So they saved forever. Bought this rundown property for $12,000 with broken plumbing. Grass is tall as a tall man floors that need to be torn up. Rugs that were horrific windows that are thin plate glass, no air conditioning, no heat and they began to rebuild it and live there. They had to drink out trash

And Priscilla came there so skinny from the abusive relationship her mother had had with her father where she'd stopped eating because he beat her mother while she was pregnant with her and she came out with a black mark in her eyes. She's lucky she wasn't killed in the womb so when he beat her mother in front of her again she stopped eating and she looked like a ghost like she would blow away and she went up to Barry's. She was very happy but since this boy has ostracized her and apparently the kids are bullying her for breaking up with them because he was controlling and she didn't like that. It reminded her of her father that's been deported for two felony assaults on her mother

She stopped eating again. She's losing weight and she was sounding like she was going to drop out of school because they've been so ugly to her. I asked her are you going to prom when she said she was graduating and she said I was 6 months left and she said no. I broke up with my boyfriend and I talked a bit and she said he and his friends are being ugly to me. It's illegal in Alabama to bully another child in school or on the internet. So I contacted the counselor and I said there's bullying going on. This happened to my niece who had reading problems because she had weak eye muscles and she wasn't going to go to a dance because a boy was bullying her and she'd managed to learn how to read get her eye strengthened because her mother's doctor found out what was wrong with her. She's so smart but she couldn't learn to read because her eyes weren't staying together there. Her eye muscles were weak and he did eye muscle strengthening exercises with her and with the health insurance that she had from the government as her mother was low income a CNA and she started reading and she could read novels and within a year she read well enough. They let her go to middle school a year late. She left this special needs school and while she was there because she was taking the low achieving classes, the people that were struggling the special needs students. A boy began bullying her and calling her stupid and all kinds of stuff. And she didn't want to go to the Halloween dance. She had picked out an outfit to be what Olivia Newton John was in Greece because she loved that movie and her mother said to her. Are you going to let that boy take away your fun not let you go. See your friends who are there. You're going to let him determine what you do the rest of your life

She sent me up with her along with her friend Haley who also dressed from Greece as her friend or a different version of Olivia Newton-John in the movie I don't remember and I asked am I allowed to go in? They said no. We have chaperones the security guard did. So I talked to the security guard about my concerns and he said Kyla. I know you if somebody's doing that to you. It's bullying you need to tell someone I'll take care of this and the next day he talked to the principal and it stopped

So I'm trying to pick out an outfit. She looks good in black so I looked up. Can you do black? That said yes you can do black for a prom and then all these cool leftover New Year's Eve clearance from the drop shippers turned up and I've been trying to set up a set that will look okay and look empowered. Black is considered an authority empowerment color. Every woman is expected to get a little black dress as part of her wardrobe because Coco Chanel, they say a rebellious soul and a forward-thinking person change the design of women's clothing from being something that was really difficult to move into something that women could move and work in and dance in during the 1920s. She is famous for the little black dress. She grew up in a nunnery. Her father had abandoned her after her mother died. He was a street vendor in the care of a convent nunnery for orphans and she got used to the black outfits of the fathers and the nuns and then she applied it to the dress. It's it said to be the first time anybody had taken black and made it into a party outfit very well and she was not known as a fashion designer until she brought out this comfortable dress that women could move around and look good in black and she got her Fame with the little black dress. She showed that black is not just for morning and funerals and widows. It is also a beautiful dress to wear for other occasions dressed up or dressed down. So I looked up and it says you can use black for prom and I looked up and I saw all these dresses and these wonderful drop shippers have been pulling stuff out and showing it to me. That's left over from New Year's that didn't get picked up by the wholesalers or the retailers or the other people who buy online and they gave me a discount but they're going fast. Every time I post them the stuff disappears people see it and say wow. That's nice. What a good price. It's pretty much all sold out all the leftover New years and Christmas clearances clearing out, but there are a few left. I've been reading all the reviews on these things. Some things are thin. Some things are not made for every figure. Some things look good on most everyone. They don't look exactly the same they say. Well, this is very body shaping showing so you'll need an outfit under that. You'll need the squish you in shape. You lingerie body shapers but these are young people. They're athletic. They play soccer so they'll look fine. They may not look very sexy in them which I don't care because they don't have that fit model shape and that womanly shape yeah, but it will look nice because there is some slender women who have done photos. Thankfully showing me that that still looks good even on a slender young person and I feel less worried about her. I feel that she's not going to drop out of school now because during this time I thought it over. I said yes. A little black dress will help her and it will help her look good and feel self-confident going to prom with her sisters and her brothers. But the problem is deeper than that. It's the adequated system of picking out one person and beating up on them in the pecking order until they're dead or commits suicide or kill someone else. This has to stop. If you're not happy as a teenager, talk to someone. Don't take it out on another person. If you're not unhappy as an adult talk to someone. Don't take it out on someone who's probably struggling also

Xanadu

In Kissimmee on U.S. Highway 192, there is a weird abandoned structure that resembles a cluster of giant igloos. These white-domed pods, built in 1983 by architect Roy Mason, were to constitute the Home of the Future, a 6,240-square-foot tourist attraction offering a look at a fully automated home. Called Xanadu, it cost about $300,000 to build and features automatic plumbing systems, walls of video screens, a computerized kitchen, and various other futuristic features.

In the kitchen, four microcomputers played the role of family dietitian, planning meals, according to a person's height, weight, age, and level of activity. An automatic chef moved food from the refrigerator to the microwave to the table. The system kept track of the grocery inventory, and there was a teleshopping system, with its own video catalogue of grocery items that could be purchased and paid for through a link with Xanadu's telebanking system. The house had its own greenhouse, with a computer that monitored the water level, soil content, sunlight, humidity, and ventilation of plants. It also featured the first modern work-at-home office, with electronic mail, ways to manage investments, information systems, bookkeeping, and news services. It even had its own family learning center, with four talking microcomputers and educational software.

Feeling blue? In this house, while lying on your own couch you could talk to a shrink by using a built-in interactive psychoanalysis system. A biofeedback device could regulate background music and project abstract patterns on the walls according to your moods. Hey, with a house like this, why would you ever need to leave it?

The five-inch-thick walls of the structure were constructed by inflating giant balloons and spraying them inside and out with insulation foam. The result was an energy-efficient house, and in recent years some builders have adopted a similar style of construction.

The home of the Future featured an intercom system, faucets that turned on automatically when a glass was placed beneath them, a Jacuzzi that used water heated by solar energy, a sensory-deprivation bathtub that gave the bather the equivalent of four hours' sleep in only ten minutes and closets that cleaned clothes using ultraviolet light and ultrasound.

During the brief time that Xanadu was open, tourists paid $5.95 to tour the fifteen rooms in this weird home. When we visited, the place had long been abandoned but was still in amazingly good state, although the interior was littered with debris left behind by transients. (In the past few years, homeless people have been hanging out there.)

Today, Xanadu is just another abandoned place left behind in the fust of progressing technology. But in 1983 it was certainly ahead of its time, and nowadays some of its technology is common in new homes.

It was fascinating to see the skeleton simply inflated; then they sprayed this goo all over it, which hardened to creature the structure. I was really impressed with it. This is just a craaaaazy place. It was built back in the '80s to be a kinda computer-controlled "house of the future"-like in that Simpsons' episode and it looked like a mix between Luke Skywalker's house and a white hobbit abode! I actually visited the place. Way back in 1983, I was like 10 years old, and we went to Florida for a family vacation, and one of the things we did there was take a four of Xanadu. I remember watching the Thriller video projected onto some huge screen inside the "Auto Oasis," the computer-controlled party room! The whole house was controlled by computers-in the kitchen, microcomputers could recommend and prepare menus of food chosen according to your specific age, size, activity level, etc. They could also adjust the dining room's lighting and even play music according to the type of meal served! And you could change the view of the outside through the windows to a variety of computer-generated images in case you got bored of the view! Crazy, eh?

In Defense of Our Elders

Well, I very clearly stated that this blog was about random thoughts, and this certainly is one. This week I worked with a group of younger people who inadvertently disclosed some inner thoughts about older people that not only smacked of narcissism but also ignorance and naivete of a world very different than this one. It’s not personal but it felt very personal to me.

This generation dreams big and I’m so glad they do. The world is their oyster and they live in the greatest time and the greatest place in history to make dreams come true. People of every race, culture, creed, gender, religion, age, and economic class have lived an American dream that kings and queens of the past couldn’t even imagine.

When I told my elderly mother about my big dreams, she was cautious and concerned. After all, she picked cotton (and watermelon and beans) before and after school started,

when she was ten, which was different from my paper route at the same age. When she got a job, she expected to be there for 50 years, working her way up in responsibility and income.

When I was 31, my worldview changed and so did hers. A 23-year-old became a self-made billionaire. This was not possible in the world she grew up in but instantly made everything possible in mine.

               

This generation gets frustrated that their elders can’t work a cell phone or surf the internet. It's not because they're incapable.

Every time I entertain a large group in my home, I remember the massive meals prepared by my mother, where every egg was perfect and impeccably timed, and fresh bread was made from scratch every day, putting even this great cook to shame.

As I shoveled sidewalks and driveways of snow for a few bucks in college, I remembered that my dad did too. He went from chopping firewood every morning to heat his parent’s home before high school, to become a smoke jumper in northern California.

These people were tough as nails and never quit anything.

In their day, they made their own clothes, grew their own food and canned some for the winter, butchered their own livestock, rebuilt their own engines and sharpened their own knives, built their own radios, repaired their own plumbing, wired their own lighting, and built their own homes. Most did it with barely a high school diploma, if that, and nothing but their hands, backs, and work ethic. They were so tough. They built more than the buildings and bridges we see. They paved the roads we travel and lives we lead with blood, sweat, and tears I’ll never know.

We’re standing on the foundations laid by others who didn’t have the conveniences or luxuries we enjoy, the sheer choices available to purchase or experience, the gadgets to ease our work and hobbies, the specialty tools to lighten our workload or technology that brings entertainment and information at the speed of light.

I’m not that different from these young folks but I definitely disagree.

To quote Isaac Newton, "If I saw further than others,

it was because I stood on the shoulders of giants. "
