Six The Ordinary Product Mini-Reviews

I've been using these six products by The Ordinary for a while so I figured I'd share my thoughts on them with you guys in the form of six mini-reviews!

The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 30% in Silicone

I really like this Vitamin C product, but be warned: it does have a silicone base and it does feel exactly like it sounds; it has all the slippiness and film-feeling of a silicone primer, so if you typically dislike silicone products, I'd go for something else. Also, I've used other vitamin C products before and none have ever stung except this one, so be careful if you're sensitive or if you're not used to having vitamin C in  your skincare routine!

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

This is an okay product and I love the idea of a niacinamide and zinc serum, but I don't really love this particular one. It feels like a normal watery serum at first, but once you start to apply it and rub it in, it starts getting really soapy and sort of sticky which I really dislike. I'll have to try some other niacinamide products because I like having it as a part of my routine, but this one just ain't it.

The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

This is a great way to get your AHA and BHA in if they're not already a part of your regular skincare routine! Just be careful not to use this more than maybe a couple times a week because it is very strong, and don't leave it on for more than the recommended time either. Even when leaving this on for less time than recommended, I still feel a bit of stinging but nothing unbearable. The only thing I don't like about this product is that it definitely looks like you have blood smeared all over your face while you're using it lol which isn't the best look imo.

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

I love this product! I use this as a kind of 'secondary toner' after my Thayers Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel Toner. It's pretty much the perfect amount of glycolic acid for my skin, I think, because I can use it in the mornings without over-exfoliating but I still notice results from using it consistently. It can sometimes have a lil bit of a weird smell, but hey, I love just about everything else about it so I can deal with one sub-par quality, especially for the great price.

The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane

This is a great, strong OTC retinol product that I enjoyed using while I had it, but I've since given it to my mom because I recently started using tretinoin (which is basically just a stronger form of retinol) in my Curology formula and didn't want to use both and have too much retinol in my routine because I know that can cause irritation and sun sensitivity. I'd definitely recommend this product if you feel like your current OTC retinol isn't quite as strong as you'd like or if you're just looking for an affordable one. The Ordinary also has this exact same product but in a 2% concentration, and I'd recommend that to start out if your skin hasn't yet gotten used to retinol exposure.

The Ordinary Mandelic Acid 10% + HA

Mandelic acid is one of the most gentle of the 'skincare acids' used for exfoliation and to increase cell turnover, so a product like this is probably your best bet if you're really sensitive to AHAs or if you're just starting out with them. This particular mandelic acid product has quite an oily, thick serum consistency and feels more hydrating than anything else when applied to the face. This product is great if you want to start exfoliating but find other exfoliating acid products have made your face sting a lot or even burn.

semester ended a week ago, and i thought of writing here. i can’t believe we are near to the end of the year, which also marked the two years of me in this foreign land away from home. lots of things happened, good and bad, which i’d be writing in this post. i’ll start with happy post first, things that makes me very happy. most of them are very personal, private stories that i wouldn’t normally share in person! :)

1. my own (bachelor/dream) apartment 

this, is the best decision and opportunity that has ever happened to me and i am beyond grateful for it. i am living in a cozy bachelor apartment in a very quite and safe neighborhood under the best landlord ever! (very professional, warm and kind). there is 6 unit in this building, and i’ve grown to know them for the past 4 months. they’re all female, single, some students, and some working. it honestly feels like i have the sweetest roommates but have my own stuff and safe space that i wanted. the best thing about living here too is that there’s a quite hour from 10p.m-6a.m (which is perfect for me!). i’m staying here until i graduate xx

2. found the right product for my skin and hair

i am so excited for this one. so when i came to canada my skin breaks out like crazy, i have all kinds of acne from time to time. felt very insecure with myself and had a really hard time in looking beautiful. but, it has all passed and my skin got better and better although sometimes i got random breakouts from pre-menstrual symptoms and stresses of studying lol. anyway, the products that works well with me is burts bees, the ordinary (deciem), and cetaphil.

that’s that! they’re all very cheap, under $10 which is very affordable. it took me almost 8 months to find the right one that works for my skin. it is a journey, really. it also taught me a lot about self-love, that beauty is not determine by your skin, but rather your character and how you treat yourself and other people. not going to lie, i missed my flawless skin back in malaysia, but i am glad that this happened. for that i am more than just my skin and i get to feel beautiful inside.  

for my hair, it took me some time to actually embrace and love my curls. i wanted to straighten it for the longest time but then i weigh my options and finally decided to stay true to myself and learn to be proud of my curls, wearing it like a crown. i made some research on how to take care of my curl type hair properly, which ingredients to avoid and to look in order to get a hydrated and healthy curls, necessities of styling them, and how to keep them nourished. lyndsey, my supervisor at work recommends “a curl can dream” line, recommended by her hairstylist. she is amazing and fun. she colours her hair every 6 weeks and her stylists pick the colour for her, experimenting. sometimes she got a lime green hair, blue, rainbows and all kinds of colour exist in the world! anyway, below is the products.

i swear to these products. they’re infused with manuka honey extract that smells really really good. not too strong like other curl hair products that i’ve tried (which hurts my head a lot). they hold my curls up for days, with no frizz and make my hair feeling so soft! very affordable too!

3. have the extra money to buy what i want each month 

alhamdulillah alhamdulillah alhamdulillah. i’m always thankful to have a job that i really love. working with very fun, amazing supervisor and other student assistants that i don’t see myself working at any other place! i got paid every two weeks, 20h every week with a 40h in total! so far, i have bought something that i wanted each month besides groceries and other necessities. fluffy, cozy carpet and organizers for my apartment, LED lights, ereaders book (kobo), necklace as well as earrings! if you’d like to check out where i bought the jewelries, please visit https://kraveandco.com/. they are recommended by lyndsey too! with every purchase, you provide clean drinking water for one year. their packaging too, is recyclable and plastic free. also also also they wrote handwritten letter for every order and insert free gift as well! how awesome is that? it’s very humble and appreciative small busines.  

4. got on track in reading back again! 

i don’t know if you ever heard of ereaders. i just knew this thing exist last two weeks and i bought it right away after 2 days of researching which is best to buy haha. one of the student assistants at the office had a kindle, an ereader as well. after thorough reading and educating myself on ereader tablet, i decided to buy kobo. it’s really awesome, to see how this exist. like it’s meant for me since i’m a fast reader. i bought kobo libra 2 (the latest version), at best buy and it costs me $219! oh well, that’s the christmas present for myself ;)

i chose kobo because it’s more universal and canada based. it has an audiobook features, overdrive account (you can linked them with your local public library), a kobo ebookstore (that you can subscribe for $9.99 per month) and it supports wide range of file format! so you can also download ebooks online in your desktop and transfer them into your kobo. how cool is that? i mostly just downloaded them from zlibrary, the largest ebook library in the world. it’s free and they have epub format for every book which goes perfect with kobo. mine is also waterproof!  

on the other side, kindle for me is not very convenient. its is USA based, and you can only buy/get books from amazon kindle, supporting limited format. there’s no overdrive options though on this one, and is very slow. all in all, both kobo and kindle functions practically the same (the prolight feature, font choices, margin, spacing, etc.) but kobo has the best software compared to kindle. if you’d like to purchase one, see https://ca.kobobooks.com/products/kobo-libra-2

so far, i have read 3 books in 5 days... it feels amazing! like i’m back to my 9 years old self who can’t stop reading most of the time haha. if you’re a fast reader like me, or would like to get into reading, i’d recommend buying kobo.

i don’t really have so much people (friends) that truly love me and accept me for who i am. but these people are, amazing and all things that can’t be described by words. they are my friends, my family and my people. i am the type of person who seek deep personal connections and i am beyond grateful that i can have this connection with them. friends that i have are the ones at work, thats it. lyndsey, lethabo, brian (that’s graduating!), catherine, temi, prabakhar, tasnif, and tae woo (the new student assistant). but we don’t hang outside of work place, so. i’m not so close with any, as a matter of fact. but they’re awesome too!
