Scenes of Ellen and Orlok in the Nosferatu script.
I like that it is clarified that the darkness is her own. And that, at the end, she is FULFILLED.

Nosferatu (2024) is unquestionably a multifaceted work, but what I personally consider to be the unifying idea behind its facets is that, for Ellen, Orlok represents validation.
Her fears are dismissed and called childish?.. He's a nightmarish manifestation of them.
She is consistently disrespected by everyone around her?.. He considers her his only equal. She never uses his title, it's permitted.
She is told to fix herself, misunderstood, and always isolated?.. He knows all the darkest parts of her and is delighted by them. He wants her just as she is, so much that he will lie, kill, and cross the ocean to find her.
The scene in their death/wedding bed is a direct parallel to the scene of her waking in that bed at the beginning of the film. She complains to Thomas that the "honeymoon is yet too short" and tries to pull him down with a kiss - however, he is worried about being late for work, and so he extricates himself and leaves. Cut forward to her sharing the same bed with Orlok, similarly early in the morning; he is startled by cock-crow and begins to rise, but she guides his head back down - and, even though he knows that he will die, he stays. He is her sexual and emotional desire, realized.
Given that there is a plethora of emotions Ellen is forced to suppress on daily basis, there is no singular correct interpretation of her relationship with Orlok. To erase any one of them is to render it shallower than it actually is; but there is no doubt as to why their attachment is mutual. To each, the other is something they’ve never had before.

Okay but. I love how in the final scene of the film, after Ellen bids Orlok to come and they kiss, there's this bit in which he's just standing there. Looking and hungering. He's wheezing and breathing faster and faster, which is such a fucking hot detail because we've seen that he only breathes in to speak. It's something painful for him, a necessary action done just for practical purposes.
And yet the sight of Ellen undressing has him literally panting. Even though there's no lungs alive in him, no need to draw in so much air-- after all, he doesn't utter any other words after the Vow. His body, no matter how dead and rotting, ends up performing the physical rituals of desire, swept up in its sheer magnitude. He stops being a self-proclaimed beast, no longer something inhuman for whom "love is inferior". Just for one night, Ellen turns the monster into something that can be killed. She makes him a man.

"𝓣he walls of the hall are plunged in darkness from which Hutter's back emerges. He faces the motionless figure. Is this pale, ghostly creature with hollow eyes and thin mouth the lord of the castle himself?
The face twists into a polite grimace. Sharp ratlike teeth appear over the lower lip."

Bahahaha I love Robert Eggers. "Blistering orchestral climax that would bring Beethoven to his knees in torment"

I know Nosferatu 2024 doesn't focus on it, but why is this the the closest think we've ever gotten of Jonathan in his brain fever arc and being taken care of and protected by his wife during his nightmares and illusions.
Because Robert Eggers read, understood, and enjoyed the book Dracula, including acknowledging the characters and plot points as they actually exist in Bram Stoker's writing.
Most directors and spinoff writers are only aware of the book because they're really making their stuff based off of each others' entirely bullshitted works and wikis that have completely atrophied around the ideas of Dracula = Dark fuckprince, Mina = Reincarnated swoonwife, and Jonathan = Stuffy Broomstick There to Die or Be Divorced for purposes of Dracusex
Jonathan's brain fever bits showing up clearly in Thomas are like all the other book shout-outs in the film: They exist because Eggers cares about the origins and history behind what he makes.

I didn’t much care for Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror or Nosferatu: The Vampyre, but I DO have a huge appreciation for Dracula adaptations that show Dracula transporting his dirt boxes by himself. Fucking Dracula doing his own manual labor is so funny to me

will finally watch nosferatu this saturday and i'm lucky enough to be going to a screening where Florin Lazarescu will be attending. he's the Romanian writer who worked with Robert Eggers on the reconstructed "Dacian" used throughout the movie, so i'll be able to gauge his point of view working on this half-invented language that Eggers apparently requested. maybe i can finally stop being a hater about it and amend my ways lol
(i still think that clip of Orlok telling Ellen "tu esti a mea" sounds more like mis-pronounced garbled Romanian than any kind of reconstructed Dacian but! this is not a hill to die on. i am willing to have my mind changed. i just have veeery mixed thoughts on this idea of a revived Dacian language which has little historical basis, is NOT historically accurate, and will only fuel populist fantasies in my country at a pretty critical political time, but if it works in the movie i'll be cool with it. i've also heard from Romanian friends that the scenes in actual Romanian in the Roma camp are pretty hilarious from our point of view because some of the stuff they're saying is hilarious to us, though spooky to a non-RO audience. i do appreciate that Eggers hired actual Romanian actors. so i'll see if i find it more funny than atmospheric lol)

People who are censoring Emma Corrin at the Nosferatu premieres are the worst!
I’m not going to comment this on the Instagram post I’m referring to, because I’m not going to instigate anything hostile on that platform specifically because it’s not worth it, but to whoever you are, you’re so frustrating.
For anyone confused, here is what Emma wore to the Nosferatu premiere in London a few nights ago. A gorgeous Victorian-nightgown esque dress that compliments the one they’re seen wearing in the trailer. (Also their makeup was chefs kiss, 10/10, no notes.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I was just checking my Instagram, and I came across an account that decided it was up to them to dictate how this wonderful actor was perceived on the red carpet…for a film they play an important role in…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First of all, what on earth is this? In the world we live in, in the situation the western political scale is falling right now, do you seriously deem it appropriate for you to pick and choose how this person is allowed to be perceived on a red carpet event for a movie they worked hard on??
Do you seriously think it’s appropriate for you to censor someone’s body, which is their form of expression and statement, because of a personal, borderline outdated, opinion? If Emma’s style choice is not to your taste (which is a bigoted take anyway because a quick scroll will show you the shirtless Bill photos on this account, so wonderful, you’re just ignorant), then…crop Emma out if that’s something you don’t want on your blog? Like I’m sorry there is absolutely no need for this. It’s so, so, so disrespectful.
I completely understand that this account belongs to a person, and they are within their right to decide what they do or don’t want on their blog (even if I disagree), HOWEVER, there are ways to do it without being deemed oppressive, condescending and bigoted. Cropping Emma out removes them from the focal point, again something I don’t agree with, but it doesn’t shove negative attention onto their choices either. Highlighting it with an ugly photoshop is not only rude, but actually insulting, and seems as though you’re purposefully forcing Emma’s look into the spotlight.
Let’s zoom in on that comment a little more, as well.
Tumblr media
‘With a little help from me to Emma Corrin’ a condescending insinuation that you think they need your help, in need of your assistance, which immediately puts them below you. When, if I recall correctly, this is Emma’s livelihood and daily job. They seem to be quite well versed in how to rock a red carpet.
‘Just disrespectful 😒’ - how so, to who and to what? Just say you feed into the over sexualisation of breasts and go. Be honest about your bigoted view, don’t sugarcoat it with the essence that you’re ’doing them a favour’. Nobody else at the premiere seemed bothered, everyone was happy and taking photos and there wasn’t a hint of awkwardness to pick up on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second photo was at the Berlin premiere, but shows equally, if not more, nipple. (Which weirdly the poster I’m referring to had no issue with that outfit, but the London one? 🤔
Oh and also? Don’t put Emma’s name in the hashtags if you’re so damn scandalised by their attire.
And before anyone comes for me with ‘you’re overreacting’ or ‘it’s not that deep, don’t freak out’, it actually is that deep. This is disrespectful at best and hateful and oppressive at worst, even if the original poster didn’t intend it that way. It’s essentially saying ‘I’m taking away your self expression because it doesn’t fit with I deem acceptable for someone with breasts’.
In this vile world where women/afab trans people in general are consistently being oppressed, ordered around, abused and more, seeing someone be blatantly so rude like this is just…gross, especially around such an anticipated movie and with a wonderful cast. Please try and do better in the future, there’s no need for this.
Also. Here’s those shirtless photos of Bill, in case anyone wanted evidence of that. (Who is also slaying may I say!)
