Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life. 🎶 Prince (Rogers Nelson)’s life began on this day in 1958. One of the best-selling musicians of all time, Prince is also remembered for his energetic performances, film work, and songwriting. Prince fused a range of musical genres, from funk and R&B to synthpop and rock, delivering this signature sound with unapologetic style and flair. 🎤 Prince designed and played this "Yellow Cloud" guitar. It was custom-made in 1989 by the firm Knut-Koupee Enterprises, from the artist's native Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prince's distinctive personal symbol adorns both the top and side of the fingerboard. Custom work for famous instrumentalists and musicians provides an important marketing tool for small-scale guitar makers. 🎸 This guitar is not currently on display. #MusicHistory #AmericanHistory #RememberingPrince #ThePurpleOne #NotOnView #MinnesotaHistory #MNHistory #VintageGuitar #CustomGuitar https://ift.tt/2HrxC3y

"Conceptual artists are mystics rather than rationalists. They leap to conclusions that logic cannot reach." — Sol LeWitt LeWitt’s version of Conceptual Art in the 1960s and ‘70s emphasized the original idea that generates a work rather than the execution or final object. While often associated with straight lines and geometric forms, LeWitt always explored irregular shapes as well. In the late 1990s, nongeometric forms became especially prominent in LeWitt’s wall drawings, sculptures, and large gouache paintings, with each type of work informing the other. By 2000 LeWitt had begun a series of sculptures he called Splotches for their eccentric contours and bright colors. At over twelve feet tall, Splotch #22 is the largest and most complex—as well as the last—of LeWitt’s nongeometric forms. Two working drawings are on the wall nearby.

#NotOnView | Alphonse Mucha: Lady with Daisy
Alphonse Mucha was a leading artist and designer of the Art Nouveau style in late 19th-century Paris. He is best known for his poster depicting sensual, languid women with flowing hair. His subjects included the celebrated actress Sarah Bernhardt with whom he worked in the mid-1890s. Mucha’s skill as a draftsman and decorative designer brought him commissions for a wide range of graphic projects, from large-scale advertisements for cigarette paper, champagne, and railroads to magazine and book illustrations. Here, he utilizes his skill in textile design.
