fuck it, osmosis jones world building: viruses

SO I KEEP TALKING ABOUT THESE LITTLE BASTARDS BUT I NEVER EVER PUT ESTABLISHED AU LORE DOWN ON PAPER.

so brief explanation: this is an resident evil osmosis jones crossover, lots of ocs and shared lore between the 2 canons. if you have any questions hmu because i fuckin love talkin about it.

so in the au there are really only a few viruses talked about. Red death's like thrax, T-virus' like the one injected into patient zero, and the ones that were unleashed on Hector and Shane Detorre's school. lastly, there are the T-virus variants like Myx and Ataxia. while all these viruses are unique in their exact abilities, overall the share quite a lot. Especially considering most of these viruses are man made.

Basic virus biology

I know in the world of osmosis Jones, cells have gender. In my au I canon that although they have a preference for appearance and chose their pronouns, things are far more fluid than with humans. Even canon Ozzy and drix played with this in that episode Ozzy gets "pregnant". I'm not about to bring full mpreg into this au, but masculine presenting cells being the 'carriers'? That definitely happens here.

The main goal of man made viruses like the t-virus is not to kill their host outright. they mean to use psychological tactics against their victims and potential victims. inflicting fear and using it to spread their infection is something that comes naturally to them. unlike other viruses, whose main goal is to kill and add another notch in their dna chain, T-virus and their variants only want to spread, they do not collect dna beads unless programmed to. sometimes they spread via the bites or body fluids of infected, shambling hosts. sometimes with asymptomatic carriers and occasionally they completely sublime into the hosts immune system and become the new mayor ( as with patient zero and Cerebri)

Every now and then, they will mutate, or rather cause mutations in other viruses, perhaps create a new strain of t-virus. Given that cells are sentient in this universe, it is a cruel process that involves a lot of pain, to be taken over by a virus, thoughts and feelings that are not your own. some cells are resistant to this ( hence why the virus will occasionally sublime into a host and become one).

Certain strains are programed to cause mutations so that umbrella might find new, more effective strains of the virus. others, like Myx, are just naturally cruel and generate mutations randomly as a result of their brutality. This also doubles as their means of reproducing.

Reproduction

With regular cells like Ozzy or Leah or Maria, it's pretty simple. A single cell can divide (like Ozzy making mitosis Jones) or 2 cells of any gender or sex can make the woohoo and make more cells the old fashion way.

It's quite different with viruses unfortunately. Since they aren't technically alive , they are essentially infertile and can't reproduce in the traditional sense. If a virus wants to spread, they must infect an already existing cell, through touch or bite or sex. Doing that will transform the infected cell into a copy of the virus, which can then spread to others and so on and so forth. Most viruses, like thrax , prefer to simply kill their targets. It's easier and means less competition. They might accidentally kill someone while fucking or just infect a cell they meant to destroy. It takes practice to be able to control this ability.

T-virus' are an exception to this rule. while most viruses aim to kill their host, T-virus' and their variants aim A) to spread as far and wide as possible and B) to control the body, turning them into the shambling undead (or in myx and Ataxia's case, puppets for patient zero)

Virtually every part of a virus is infectious but most have a singular preferred means of infection. For Thrax it's his claw, for Myx it's her bite and for Cere it is a kiss. Their basic structure is upright although not necessarily bipedal (like Scarlet from ozzy and drix), with slick skin/hide, celia/tendril hair as well as predator features like sharp teeth, large forward facing eyes and claws. They will usually have unique traits based on the family of virus the are from (ie all t-virus' are digitigrade, red deaths have red protein envelopes.)

Some viruses share traits between each other. they cant replicate without help but they can improve one another. Again, viruses are not able to reproduce sexually, even with each other (although that generally won't stop them from trying) instead viruses engage in a...shall we say mutually beneficial exchange of DNA. Despite having varying genders all viruses have characteristics of more than one sex. Generally they have an appendage for giving DNA stands and an opening, for receiving them (although does vary).

Virus sex seems to function on some unspoken hierarchy, with the most deadly viruses at the top, the ones with the highest body count or longest DNA chain. they spread themselves and their worst( or best depending on how you look at it) traits to other, lesser viruses . sounds rather kind of them when you put it like that. the strong bolstering the weak? i can assure you, the words "kind" and "virus sex" will never be in the same sentence together.

Viruses mating (for want of a better word) is an incredibly destructive act. it causes corrosion and inflammation to the immediate area around them, damaging the body and any cells or germs in the surrounding area. To the virus themselves it can often cause a great deal of distress. while logically they know sharing dna will make them stronger, often they do not wish to be beholden to a creature stronger or more dangerous than themselves. Viruses aren't known for treating lesser life forms with any sort of care or kindness . To facilitate the act, Lesser viruses enter a sort of heat in the presence of more powerful strains. thought to be a quirk of biology to make them receptive, many viruses prefer to use it to take care of the competition or "thin out the herd" rather than its intended usage. neither seems to be a particularly palatable option, but when faced with such a choice most prefer to accept whatever DNA or trait is offered rather than have their nucleocapsid splattered across the nearest wall.
