A new report by The Linux Foundation and Meta sheds light on the rising impact of open-source AI (OSAI) across industries, underscoring its power to drive innovation, slash costs, and level the competitive playing field.

According to the report, a staggering 94% of organizations are already using AI tools—and among them, 89% are integrating open-source AI into their operations. The findings blend global survey data, academic insights, and real-world use cases to paint a compelling picture: open-source AI is becoming the foundation of modern technological progress.

Cost Savings and Accessibility

At the core of open-source AI's momentum is affordability. Two-thirds of businesses report that open-source solutions are significantly less expensive to deploy than proprietary ones. In fact, the report estimates that without open-source alternatives, companies would face costs up to 3.5 times higher.

This financial efficiency is especially vital for startups and smaller enterprises, which are often at the forefront of AI-driven innovation. The accessibility of open models enables a broader range of developers and organizations to experiment, iterate, and deploy transformative technologies.

Innovation Without Monopoly

One of the report’s case studies centers on PyTorch, Meta’s popular deep learning framework. After transitioning PyTorch to an open governance model under a non-profit, Meta’s direct contributions decreased—but overall participation surged. External companies, including chipmakers and complementary tech providers, ramped up their involvement, demonstrating how decentralized governance can stimulate broader innovation and reduce dependence on a single entity.

“Engagement in open, collaborative activities is a better indicator of innovation than patents,” write report authors Anna Hermansen and Cailean Osborne.

Industry Applications: From Manufacturing to Medicine

The report highlights how OSAI is reshaping major sectors:

Manufacturing: With its adaptable codebase, open-source AI is streamlining operations, from automating workflows to optimizing supply chains. McKinsey projects up to a $290 billion value boost for advanced manufacturing through AI adoption.

Healthcare: Hospitals and clinics are increasingly turning to open AI models for diagnostics and operational efficiency. These tools offer cost-effective, privacy-conscious alternatives to proprietary solutions, potentially adding $260 billion in value to the global healthcare industry.

A Talent and Workforce Shift

Open-source AI is also changing the job market. Demand for AI skills is surging, and wages for related roles could rise by as much as 20%. This signals a growing need for education and workforce development initiatives to equip professionals for the AI-driven future.

Hilary Carter, SVP of Research at The Linux Foundation, summarized the findings: “Open-source AI is a catalyst for economic growth and opportunity. Nigerian teen jailed for blasphemy has sentence quashed

The appellate division of the Kano State High Court set aside Omar Farouq's sentence on Thursday because he did not have legal representation at his first trial, his counsel Kola Alapinni told CNN.

A Sharia court in Kano State convicted Farouq in August last year and sentenced him to ten years in prison after he was accused of using foul language toward Allah in an argument with a friend. He will be released Monday after being in captivity for over five months with no access to family or lawyers. The Sharia court judgment which was nullified Thursday described him as a 17-year-old minor, but Alapinni told CNN his client is 13.

Alapinni said Farouq's mother had fled to a neighboring town after mobs descended on their home following his arrest. "We now need to arrange safe passage for him. His life is in danger in Kano -- it will never be the same," said Alapinni. The Auschwitz Memorial in Poland has offered to fundraise to pay for Farouq's education, saying in a tweet that "we are all part of one humanity."

In a separate judgment, the court also quashed 22-year-old music studio assistant Yahaya Sharif-Aminu's death penalty sentence for insulting the Prophet Mohammed. He had not been allowed legal representation before or during his trial -- in contravention of Nigerian citizens' constitutional right to legal representation, said his lawyers. He was convicted on August 10 for making "a blasphemous statement against Prophet Mohammed in a WhatsApp Group," the judgment document stated. Blasphemy is an offense that carries the death sentence under Kano State's Sharia Penal Code. The recording was shared widely, causing mass outrage in the highly conservative, majority Muslim state, according to various reports. However, Sharif-Aminu's case was remitted back to the Sharia court for a retrial due to procedural irregularities, said Alapinni.

The lawyer told CNN his team will appeal the entirety of the decision. "Both cases have similar facts and the same judge. Why is one defendant free and not the other?" he said. Amnesty International's country director Osai Ojigho said she welcomed Farouq's release and that "he should not have been convicted in the first [place]." "We reiterate our stance that Aminu Yahaya Shariff should be given a fair hearing," she added. Kano's State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, told clerics in Kano in August that he would sign Sharif-Aminu's death warrant as soon as the singer had exhausted the appeals process, according to local media reports. Kano State, like most predominantly Muslim states in Nigeria, practices Sharia law alongside secular law. In the eyes of many Nigerians, the adoption of Sharia law is a violation of the country's constitution, because they believe Article 10 guarantees religious freedom. "This issue of blasphemy is incompatible with the Nigerian constitution," Leo Igwe, chair of the board of trustees for the Humanist Association of Nigeria, told CNN in September. The court upheld the legality of the Sharia Penal system in both cases, a decision which Alapinni said he will also appeal in the Federal Court. "It goes to the very root of religious freedom in Nigeria," he added.

He also wants to see his daughter, and give her the drink too. That way, he could make up for the time lost while he was away. He hopes Linda joins him when he eventually returns home; he’d miss her terribly otherwise.

Hobbies: Nygel found joy in gardening. Back at home, his house was covered in exotic and gorgeous flowers from around the world... however, aboard the Blood Diamond, he can’t exactly plant anything anymore. 

Aspiration: Nygel wants to find the Pool of Eternity and drink it for himself. In his mind, it is the only way for him to honor his household and avoid bringing about shame. With immortality, the effects of the Pool are also supposed to cure all illnesses. Including illness of the mind; curing the romantic preferences that Nygel convinced himself to be mental sickness.

Habits: Tatum is incredibly conceited and tends to fail to realize how much of a liability he actually is. Because of his abundance of self pride, he throws himself into ridiculous situations, thinking he can handle them and thinking he’s invincible.

Special Features: Tatum has a squeaky, cracking, voice that is usually the center of many jokes cracked by the crew.

Hobbies: Tatum loves to play with animals whenever he has the chance. Especially cats. He always has time for cats. Even the strays. 

Aspiration: Tatum is determined to retrieve the man he assumes to be his father, August, back to his hometown to see his mother. He couldn’t care less about the hopes and dreams of the other people on the ship. All that matters is making his mother happy with the closure she needs. 

Haze Dalton

Special Features: Haze is partially blind from an accident in his childhood. Raised by a blacksmith, Haze understands the many different forms of weaponry and which to use for what occasion. 

Hobbies: Haze usually volunteers to clean the dirtied weapons of the crew so that he is provided with a moment of quiet that still connects him to the chores he had done in his youth, when he was at his happiest. Before the regrets and the loss.

Aspiration: Haze wants to find the Pool of Eternity and drink from it, so that he may live on- forever honoring the memory of his family by serving justice, or vengeance as some would say, to all the monsters of the world.

Special Features: Though difficult, Philippe is incredibly intelligent and skilled in his work. He is a lifesaver. Unwillingly. 

Hobbies: Philippe would lock himself in his quarters at all times if he could. Whenever he does have free time, he spends it either reading one of the many books different crew members have in their possession, or going into the kitchen to talk to whoever he pleases. 

Aspiration: To escape the Blood Diamond and all of the worthless people aboard it. He wants to bring Toby along with him when he goes, and make a wife out of her.

Special Features: Patty adores pretty things, so he’s always covered head to toe in dramatic and sparkling jewels that he either steals or is given. This always leads to conflict as well, with poor men and thieves.
