Movie Review!

Oct 13 - Hell House LLC (2015)

This movie is interesting. I think this does a better job of the sort of found footage concept than some previous movies this month. The fun thing about this is that it's primarily based on just seeing people be people in a stressful situation. I didn't find it particularly frightening after the first couple things happen.

However, the charm of this movie is that it isn't designed as a film to be scary in theory. Like, the people in the movie aren't filming a documentary style film because they think they're in a scary situation at first. So, it's fun to get to know the people knowing that something has to go wrong. That said, the end result wasn't as scary as the buildup made it out to be.

I will say that the interviewee reveal at the end was a nice plot moment.

Oct 13 - Spent the vast majority of my time today playing Planet Crafter. Restarted the game from scratch this morning and built my main base starting at a rather higher elevation than my original attempt yesterday was. Began almost at the crest of a hilltop and have only built upwards from there.

I *think* it should be at a high enough elevation, I finally thought to check the wiki this evening some time after water started accumulating (yay, officially further along than yesterday's attempt got), and it lists the lake depth as about 25 units up from the floor of the starter valley, or about the height of four building modules. As far as I can tell by guesstimating with the Mark I Eyeball, my lowest level is probably around 6 or so units up, so the base should end up projecting out over the eventual lake with a decent amount of airspace underneath. I might even be able to build down a level or two after the lakes form.

Canadian Thanksgiving is tomorrow, my brother did groceries today and picked up a (frozen) turkey; 6.22kg or about 13.75 pounds. It's now in the sink in the largest stock pot we have, with the pot and sink both filled with cold water (I don't trust the stopper in that sink to actually retain water overnight, hence the pot). It's deep enough that just the butt end and leg tips are above the water (and the house gets cold enough overnight that I am not particularly concerned about it). It should be thawed enough by tomorrow morning to go back in the fridge until it's time to prep and roast it. Not planning to stuff it, though I may make dressing on the side, because yum. Eyeing the half-loaf left of that cornbread I made a few days ago and thinking that, onions, sage, etc.

Just me for supper tonight so I made a cheese and tomato sandwich. (I'd been nibbling on stuff like baby carrots and fruit most of the afternoon because yay for fresh groceries so I wasn't particularly hungry).

Now to go crochet for a bit before sleeping, though I better find my fingerless gloves first because, as noted earlier, it's getting friggin' cold at night now that we're into fall. My oversized long blanket hoodie is once again an invaluable evening outfit.

PICNIC PERFORMANCES: Jazzmobile Presents Sarah Vaughan Centennial

冬の New York といえば、Bryant Park のスケートリンクやクリスマスマーケットなら、ご存じの方も多いだろう。

ずっと知らなかったのだけど、夏の間はヨガやワークアウトの無料クラスなどの各種イベントも開催されているそうだ。しかも太っ腹なのが、Bank of America の提供で、毎年 Picnic Performances という無料コンサートが開かれていること（2024年度は 5/31（Memorial Day/ いわゆる夏の始まりの日）- 9/13 まで）。

どうも NY では「夏の風物詩」らしい。Instagram では随時イベント情報が流れてくるので、チェックするのが楽しみだった。

ひとりのんびりと自宅で過ごしたかったので、Bryant Park の公式YouTube チャンネルで公開されているコンサートの中から、こちらを楽しませてもらった。

これまた知らなかったのだが、こちらのコンサートを主催するのが、NY・ハーレムに拠点を置くジャズ振興組織である Jazzmobile, Inc. なんでも夏の間は NY 各地で無料コンサートを開催するのだそうだ。

アメリカのジャズヴォーカリスト Sarah Vaughan 生誕100周年を祝うコンサート。最近聴き始めたヴォーカリストの曲が聴けるということで、1時間半を超えるコンサートを「気分は芝生の上」でじっくりと堪能。スタート時は明るかった空も、終わる頃にはすっかり暗くなっていた。自分の住む地域も、コンサートが終わる頃にはとっぷりと日が暮れていた。

パフォーマンスを披露した Charenée Wade は生まれも育ちも Brooklyn で、Sarah Vaughan に影響を受けたジャズヴォーカリストとのこと。ジャズに詳しいわけじゃないけど、本家とはまた違う声の個性が耳に心地よかった。 曲によっては sax奏者の Camille Thurman も加わり、2人のヴォーカルが重なるなんてなんとも��沢な時間。バンドはセプテット。Anthony Hervey のトランペットソロが響き渡る厳かな空間っていいなぁ。そこにピアノの音色が重なって、思わず体を揺らしながら酔いしれる自分がいた。

9月あまり調子が良くなくて、10月からはがんばろうなんて思ってたのに思うようにいかず、実はかなり落ち込んでいる。自分のカラダなのに自由が効かないなんて、うつ病で大変だった頃を彷彿とさせて焦ってしまう。ここ数日なんて何をやってもうまくいかず、自分はもうダメなんじゃないかとネガティブなことばかりが頭の中をぐるぐると回る始末。昨夜は眠れなくて辛かった。

休日も仕事していたのを、思い切って「完全に休む」ことにしているんだけど、やっぱり考えてしまうよね。そこで、仕事とは関係のない分野の読書や映画鑑賞をしたり、コンサートを楽しんでみたりと、外出以外の楽しみ方を模索している（外出すると何かとお金かかるからね）。

「そうだ、音楽が好きだよな。ライブ行けてないな」と思って、たまたま YouTube で流れていた Hawaiian music のライブ映像をお昼頃眺めていた。ゆったりとした音楽が心をほっと和ませてくれた。

「そういえば Bryant Park でもコンサートやってたよなぁ」と思い立って YouTube を検索してみると、あったあった！しかも私の大好きなジャズのコンサートもやってる！！

力強くも優しいヴォーカルとグルーブのおかげで、やばいな涙が出ちゃったよ。知らないうちにストレス溜めて疲れちゃったんだね。

今夜は、別のジャズライブも探してみよう。検索しながら、どんな時も音楽に救われてきたんだなぁと、改めて実感している。

何か特定のつらいできごとがあるわけじゃない、だから苦しい。そんな時は何も考えないのが一番いいのかもね。ライブ映像を眺めて音楽に身を委ねる時間を大切にしようと思った。

そして近い将来、現地で鑑賞できるといいな。ヨガにも参加してみたい。小さな夢が広がる。

Oct 13 - meant to do stuff. Did not. Again.

Just me for supper tonight. Had some leftover pork ribs from last night and the remainder of a fresh pineapple that needed using up, so I layered brown basmati rice, pineapple chunks, and chopped onion in the instant pot, sprinkled it with minced garlic and ground ginger, added chicken stock and soy sauce for liquid, placed the ribs on top, and pressure cooked it for 15 minutes then left it sitting on warm for a while for the rice to absorb most of the pot liquid. Came out very tasty and the ribs very tender.
