Future Trends in Submarine Cable Damage Prevention
In the digital era, global connectivity depends heavily on a vast network of submarine cables. These undersea lifelines transmit more than 95% of international internet and telecom traffic, making their reliability crucial. However, submarine cable damage and repair continue to present significant challenges for telecom providers, governments, and offshore developers alike.
As we enter 2025, the industry is focused on proactive approaches to reduce downtime, minimize repair costs, and enhance system resilience. New technologies, smarter asset management, and international collaboration are driving the future of damage prevention in undersea cable infrastructure.
The Urgency of Protecting Subsea Infrastructure
Submarine cables are vulnerable to a variety of threats—both natural and man-made. These include:
Fishing activity and ship anchors (accounting for over 70% of damages)
Seismic and volcanic activity
Underwater landslides
Sabotage or cyber-related threats
Damage to these cables can cost millions per incident and disrupt services for entire regions. The average cost of submarine cable damage and repair is estimated to range between $1 million to $3 million per incident, not including revenue loss from service downtime.
Emerging Trends in Cable Damage Prevention
1. Predictive Monitoring with AI and IoT
Smart sensors and AI-powered monitoring systems are now embedded into cable systems.
These solutions offer real-time alerts for changes in ocean currents, pressure, and vibration—helping operators anticipate threats before damage occurs.
2. Better Cable Route Planning
Companies are leveraging advanced seabed mapping to avoid high-risk zones such as active fishing areas, fault lines, and undersea volcanic zones.
Dynamic routing models are also being used to design alternative cable paths.
3. Cable Armoring and Protection
Innovations in cable design, such as thicker sheathing and armored layers, offer better protection against abrasion and anchor strikes.
Trenching and burial technology has also improved, allowing cables to be buried deeper and more securely.
4. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs)
AUVs are increasingly used for both inspection and maintenance.
These unmanned systems reduce response time when damage is suspected and offer 24/7 operational capacity.
5. International Coordination and Regulation
Cross-border policies are being drafted to standardize maritime activity regulations near cable zones.
Stakeholders are pushing for better data sharing between governments and private entities involved in submarine cable damage and repair efforts.
Case Study: Asia-Pacific Cable Resilience Strategy
In 2024, a regional telecom consortium in Southeast Asia implemented a comprehensive protection strategy for a critical undersea link. This included:
Real-time threat monitoring via AI-based sonar systems
Enhanced route planning that avoided high-risk maritime traffic zones
Partnership with local fishing communities to mark “no-anchor” zones
Results:
40% reduction in cable strikes within the first year
25% decrease in emergency repair costs
This proactive model is now being considered by similar consortiums in the EU and Africa.

SEBI To Start Same Day Settlement (T+0) Trade From Next Year

Have you heard anything about The Security and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) working on improving trade settlement, SEBI announced the settlement on the same day of trade, and it all is going to change by March 2024. The Board wants to make it more convenient by making instantaneous settlements, which will be achieved by March 2025. Thereafter, India will be the first country where all trade will be settled instantly.
SEBI Chief Emphasizes To Start T+0 Settlement
SEBI chief Madhabi Puri said in the press conference held in Mumbai, she addressed the market infrastructure and technologies necessity that enable immediate settlement. She talked about the T+0 settlement which eventually will become an instantaneous settlement. SEBI's steps toward making this market more convenient can direct a lot of new people into the stock market, increasing investments in all sectors and having the settlement without delay. Everything is possible with new technologies, powerful computers, and digitization that is going to make all settlements through electrically. SEBI chief Madhabi Puri Buch made a statement in a press conference that progress is very important for our nation. A roadmap is pretty much ready and they plan to execute it as soon as possible. Furthermore, she added in her speech about the market which will be changed into T+0 and then it will change into instantaneous settlement. At the end of this accounting period or when the next new accounting period starts, T+0 settlement of trade of shares will be applied; in the accounting period 2025, after March, the instantaneous settlement will be applied in the Indian stock market. Currently, the trade settled in the time of T+1, from January 2023; India adopted this settlement system. Before 2023, India was following settlement time T+2, now it has changed to T+1, and it will change to instant settlement eventually. The SEBI already indicated the market regulator's proposal to make the same-day settlement system in the share market trade to counter resistance from offshore investors. Investors expressed their thoughts about the potential fragmentation of the system and the associated rise in trading costs. For the overseas investors who want to execute and settle a trade within the same day. However, you need at least one day of period to convert foreign currency into Indian currency. In the system of T+1 and T+2, foreign money will change into Indian currency. SEBI overall is increasing the facility for the people who are seeking to invest their money in the Indian market. India is a growing company, so many start-ups need public money to begin their business. Decreasing settlement time would be convenient for many people, it will drive more people to invest. Therefore, it eventually gives more chance to government to make more money. Can Rupees Be Acquired On Settlement Day In T+1 and T+2? Yes, rupees can be acquired on the day of settlement In the T+1 and T+2 settlement systems. To execute and settle a trade within the same day the change of funds into rupees must be completed one day before the trade for a foreign investor. Read the full article
