Hans stuttering while saying “it’s not the chivalrous way” in response to escaping through the tunnel at Maleshov is, of course, adorable—but he genuinely is trying to protect Henry. We now know that Hans has an obvious fear of the dark and cramped spaces because he mentions he might faint or go mad in the tunnel.

This would slow them down immensely and risk not only his and Vauquelin’s re-capture, but Henry’s capture and potential death. Hans’ idea to go straight to the stables was actually the best option for everyone involved.

It’s easy to see it as Hans being bratty, scared and selfish, and while he’s definitely scared, he tells Henry to trust him because he wants to protect him above all else.

“Why the hell can’t I save you once for a change?”

Hans doesn’t even realize how many times he’s already saved Henry’s life.
