What is Oolong tea?
Oolong tea, is a traditional and distinctive type of tea that falls between green and black tea in terms of oxidation. It undergoes partial oxidation, meaning the tea leaves are allowed to oxidize to a certain extent before being heat-treated to stop the oxidation process. This oxidation level gives Oolong tea its unique flavor profile, which can range from light and floral to dark and robust, depending on the specific type of Oolong.
While China is the traditional home of Oolong tea, the cultivation of Oolong tea has expanded to other regions, including India. Darjeeling, a famous Himalayan tea-growing region in the Indian state of West Bengal, is particularly known for its high-quality Oolong teas. Darjeeling's unique combination of high-altitude Himalayan terrain, favourable climate, and rich soil contributes to the distinct characteristics of Darjeeling Oolong. The altitude, ranging from 2,000 to 7,000 feet, provides the ideal conditions for slow leaf growth, allowing the tea plants to develop complex flavors. The variances in temperature and misty weather also play a crucial role in the development of the tea leaves.
Darjeeling Oolong teas are celebrated for their delicate floral notes, hints of fruitiness, and a distinctive muscatel character. The flavors are influenced by the specific tea estate, the time of harvest, and the unique terroir of the Darjeeling region.
