OOC: I need to know, is comicfrin canon to this? If the comic is canon to this au and like literally no one knows it ever happened that would just be tragic. I ask this because I know some AU’s make the comic canon and some don’t so I’m curious as to where it stands in this AU even if it will likely never come into play.
// nah, that wouldn't really fit the lore. Comicfrin is cool but I personally like the narrative weight of Loop being the first

thirsty suitors is one of those titles that the gamer gate ghouls would've made up to joke amongst themselves about how woke video games are getting nowadays, because they're pandering to xyz demographic.
but I haven't seen anybody with negative shit to say so far, which is surprising considering that everything about seems like it was engineered in a lab to piss them off...
queer, trans & nonbinary characters of color?
check
fat characters who are depicted as desireable and aren't made into comic relief?
check
a narrative that doesn't center white cis male experiences and gaze?
check
some food with seasoning???
check
a "battle" system that doesn't emphasize violent resolutions to conflicts?
check
femme & female characters who aren't sexualized to absurd degrees?
check
and theres probably more I'm missing because even the smallest departure from the formula these dorks are so accustomed to is enough to make them piss themselves in fury.
its kinda hard to put myself in the shoes of people like that because everything about this game was delightful and is exactly what i think has been missing in the industry for so long.
it would be one thing if the execution was more sloppy and not very thoughtfully made but it wasn't. nothing felt arbitrarily put in to accumulate woke points. if it were, i think it would've been pretty obvious and also not as well recieved.
and besides, in what dimension would it make sense that the creators of this game would choose to purposely make something that is so unlike all of the top selling titles if they just wanted to release a shitty cashgrab?
if all they wanted was to make money with a game that had guaranteed mainstream appeal, it doesn't make sense that they'd risk it with one where both of the main characters fail the paper bag test and they're both gay as hell. that doesnt exactly sound like a cash cow considering our political climate lately...or in the last 6000 years.
and don't get me wrong it isn't a perfect game and I'm confident the creators DID want it to be successful. i only wish certain animations were a bit more fluid and dynamic, specifically some of the facial expressions and model movements although i suspect this might have been a stylistic choice rather than an oversight.
it was also pretty short ,which isn't necessarily bad but significanly reduces the replay value from my perspective. i also wish the maps were sliiiightly bigger and that there was more to do in general. the minigames and such were fine mechanically, but after a while they got fairly repetative and not rewarding enough to keep doing after a certain point of play.
by and large though, everything else was pretty satisfying. though not quite open world, it definitely felt as though we have a great deal of autonomy in our exploration of the different areas of the map. i would've loved to see more interactable people and objects or even more special costumes and drip.
regardless i had a great time, even though some of the cooking challenges were so hard they'll haunt my nightmares.
8.5/10

Thirsty Suitors is a deeply personal story of accountability and compassion
I haven't written anything in a couple of years, but I'm coming out of the woodwork so that alone should tell you how much I loved this game. From the moment I first heard about Thirsty Suitors, I had eagerly awaited its release...

Review: Thirsty Suitors
Thirsty Suitors, from @outerloop, has well-crafted RPG mechanics and satisfying combat, but its gleefully wild and colorful style and superb dialogue and characters are truly its biggest strength. It’s the type of game where you find yourself tempted to try every activity possible, either to see a loving ode to South Asian cultures, a well-written character moment or both.

Game Review: Thirsty Suitors (Xbox Series X)
Thirsty Suitors is an attention-grabbing game, one that bedazzles with its colourful fantasy elements, but sticks in the mind because of its themes and depth. It’s wacky, it’s weird, and it’s a lot of fun. Most of the time.

if i could write any critique or longer opinion piece it'd def be about the orchad from 1kxr and how i like it. it's meandering confusing airport inspried layout...its deep underground paths that lead to the train and more that you have no idea what its for or why there are so many dead ends. what is old town and why is it shuttered? what's this shrine? the horse? whose graves are behind the waterfall and why? why is it so hard to access certain parts of the garden from the outerloop etc. why am i so attached to this suffocating space?

Thirsty Suitors Dev Diary: A Recipe for Reconciliation
We recently announced that Thirsty Suitors will be releasing on November 2nd, 2023 for Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC.
youtube
In the lead up to release, we’re going to dive into some key components of Thirsty Suitors, starting with a major element of the game: cooking!
In Thirsty Suitors, Jala must try and impress her Mom or Dad and repair their relationships through action-packed cooking segments that explore a rich menu of South Asian inspired dishes.
Cooking Together
youtube
The first recipe you learn in the game is how to make Parathas, a South Asian unleavened flatbread made with whole wheat.
Sounds easy enough, right? Wrong! Jala not only must make the dish, but navigate how she handles the tense relationship she has with her mom, Rukmini, after being absent for three years.
Tumblr media
Each time you cook in Thirsty Suitors, you’ll need to open the cookbook on the kitchen table and choose the recipe you’d like to make.
The food Jala makes with her parents not only will help her repair their relationship, but it also affects the gameplay in our turn-based battles where Jala battles her exes and a variety of other eccentric characters in the game.
Making Food More than a Meal
Tumblr media
Throughout the development of Thirsty Suitors, Cooking has evolved and changed to heighten the story we’re telling about Jala reconciling with her exes and repairing her relationship to her family.
While the main idea for the Cooking gameplay has stayed consistent–having Jala and her Mom cook recipes together through the player completing a series of quick-time events–the focus of how these sequences are presented and played out has expanded to help our narrative.
Here’s a look at the prototype phase for the Cooking gameplay in Thirsty Suitors. As you can see, we zeroed in on the general idea for how Cooking would work pretty early on with the player following a series of cooking steps in a recipe while Jala and her mom cooked.
Tumblr media
A key difference from the prototype versus the final version of Cooking was the presentation and what we focus on.
Initially, the flow of these sequences had Jala’s Mom teaching her each step through demonstrating the action, and then the player would repeat what they watched, much like how you would in real life if someone was teaching you a recipe.
Tumblr media
While it was cool watching the characters perform exaggerated cooking actions to complete each step, we found that the Cooking gameplay could interact more directly with the narrative.
Tumblr media
We decided to make these sequences less about making the dishes 100% accurately and more about what it means for Jala and her mom to cook together, and how it provides them an organic space to work through their issues and get to know each other again.
Tumblr media
Part of the joy of making games–especially narratively focused ones–is figuring out how to create a perfect marriage between the mechanics you’re designing and the story you’re telling. In a perfect world, these two things are always in a balanced state.
Think of some of your favorite games out there, they didn’t start perfectly, instead, through years of iteration, teams figure out how to use the tools they’ve built to tell the stories they want in the best way they see fit.
Tumblr media
What we found is that by shifting the focus away from trying to create a perfect recreation of the South Asian inspired dishes we have in the game, we could focus more on the characters and what these dishes mean to them.

Outerloop Games Recommends
We’ve talked a lot about food, cooking, and how these things say so much about our identities, our families, and how we connect with others.
Luckily, we’re in a moment where there are some other games interested in exploring these themes as well. We’d like to highlight one in particular that resonates with us and also features South Asian characters called Venba.
Tumblr media
Venba is a narrative cooking game, where you play as an Indian immigrant mom, who immigrates to Canada with her family in the 1980s. Players will cook various dishes and restore lost recipes, hold branching conversations and explore in this story about family, love, loss and more.
While you’re waiting for Thirsty Suitors later this year, check out Venba on Xbox, PS5, Switch, and PC, out now.
There's More to Come
In the lead up to the release of Thirsty Suitors, we’ll continue to shed light on some of the many awesome aspects of the game, our team, and insights we’ve learned along the way.
If you’re excited about Thirsty, we’d appreciate it if you Wishlisted the game on Steam, it helps put the game in front of more eyes.

The Director must be laughing her hat off. Xe's made a trap so effective we've killed ourselves over ten times more than fae has so far just to avoid repeating it.
// I'd like to point out the forge wasn't designed to be this challenging. It's meant to iniate the friendquest with Odile early but:
Odile has a field of research in this timeline
Isabeau didn't mention his dream job like he normally does at the start of the outerloop
// It was literally never intentional. Dawn just happened to be in the circumstances that led to this </3

'Dosa Divas' Is a ‘Spicy’ New Game About Fighting Capitalism With Food
[TECH AND FINANCIAL] As protestors faced off against ICE agents and law enforcement in Los Angeles, game developers gathered just a few miles away for Summer Game Fest. They’d come to the annual show in early June to show off their games and make professional connections. The team at Outerloop Games was no different. But the studio, led and staffed by brown and Black developers, many of whom are…

Thirsty Suitors is One Fascinating Gameplay Blend
Thirsty Suitors is a unique blend of mechanics from different genres, all coming together to make what should hopefully be a superb experience. Jala appears to have a lot to work with in their life, with a lot of story bits yet to be uncovered, and we still haven’t even got to experience other locations, other possible activities, more of Timber Hills in general, so there’s still plenty of room for the game to surprise us even further when it arrives on November 2 for all major platforms.
