what if…what if tim brought back the wrong bruce from the time stream. a bruce that’s similar enough that they don’t question anything, and any new mannerisms can be excused because of possible trauma

like okay bruce is giving them the cold shoulder—maybe he needs space after being isolated for half a year?

oh he’s raising his voice at tim and damian, well he’s probably just stressed?

batman ignores their help on the field? its okay he does that sometimes

him and jason have gotten into multiple fist fights. that’s…unusual. and concerning. but just give him time jay he’ll come around—

au!bruce’s behavior was just unpleasant the first few months, and eventually they get used to it. then it escalates. the change is so subtle that 2 years in they dont even question why bruce is suddenly cussing them out and smacking them around. he treats alfred like some common servant. he bosses the jl around, acting all entitled, but he does his job well and funds most of it, so the jl just grit their teeth and accepts it.

then one day during a jl meeting with every superhero team present, a portal opens and an au!tim exits out of it while dragging bruce’s body with him. a dying bruce. their bruce. bruce whose body was unable to adjust to living in au!bruce’s universe. (maybe au!bruce was dying too but didnt let it show).

obviously they all freak out

and tim unsurprisingly blames himself again

then when their bruce wakes up and finds out all the shit au bruce pulled. well. is killing an alternate version of yourself considered murder or suicide?

Jason, assigned to watching-bruce-duty: oh and he told me not to come back to the manor and called me a ‘fucking druggie criminal.’

Bruce: what.

Jason, oblivious: yeah then he punched me in the face

Bruce, having a stroke: what.

AU!Bruce, in the hospital bed next to him: *sweats*
