RICE Alzheimer's Research Institute

Terry died on 12 March 2015, having given his PCA a run for its money. Open about his diagnosis, he has helped to unlock the secrecy and stigma that often surrounds dementia. His legion of fans is undoubtedly grateful that despite the inevitable progression of the PCA he was able to fight his âembuggeranceâ and continue to produce a number of both well-received and well-reviewed books. Terry was also a great example to me in emphasizing how important it is that, in caring for people with any type of dementia, we always look for what people with a condition like PCA can still do, rather than what they canât: by maximizing what is possible, a person can still live well with dementia for a significant time.
âProfessor Roy Jones, Director of RICE (taken from âTerry Pratchett: His Worldâ)
I wanted to post something for the Glorious 25th about the Research Institute for the Care of Older People (RICE) in Bath, where Sir Terry Pratchett received treatment for Post-Cortical Atrophy, the type of Alzheimerâs disease that eventually took his life. From the organizationâs website:
RICE established one of the first memory clinic services in the UK in 1987 â a service which has since been widely replicated and is now considered standard and best practice by the NHS. In fact, RICE now runs the NHS Memory Clinic in Bath and North East Somerset on behalf of the local clinical commissioning group and local authority through a sub-contract with HCRG Care Group. To date, weâve assessed, diagnosed, treated and advised 12,000 people with memory problems and their families in our memory clinic.Â
Most of RICEâs clinical services and research activities take place in our own purpose built, specialist centre located on the Royal United Hospital site. The building of the RICE Centre was possible as a result of generous donations from major donors, trusts and foundations, and members of the public. RICE moved into the ground and first floor of the centre in 2008. Following the success of the DementiaPlus Appeal and further generous donations from major donors, trusts and foundations and members of the public, RICE converted the attic floor in 2019 to create more office space. This has given us access to much needed additional rooms and offices which will enable us to grow and run more services and activities. Weâve worked hard to ensure that the areas of the centre visited by our patients meets their needs and we regularly receive feedback on how much our patients enjoy their visit to our centre.
RICE not only provides clinical services to patients, but also conducts research into aging and dementia, including performing clinical trials for new drug treatments for memory-related diseases and developing other âtechniques for diagnosing, managing, treating and understanding dementia and memory changes in older adults.â
Lady Lyn Pratchett is the patron of the organization, and the website includes a page about how people can donate funds or volunteer at the clinic and participate in fundraising events.
SO, if youâd like to help fund Alzheimerâs research on this Glorious 25th of Mayâor at any timeâin honor of the Man in the Hat, take a look!

TL;DR: 69.1% of people who've recovered from mild covid had lingering cognitive impairment.
Attempting to curb only severe acute disease opens us up to lingering post-viral illness that can be just as severe.
Abstract
Background:
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) causes persistent symptoms, including brain fog. Based on limited research on the long-term consequences of mild COVID-19, which has yielded inconsistent results, we investigated which cognitive functions were most affected by COVID-19 in non-hospitalized Asian patients with long-term COVID and subjective cognitive complaints.
Methods:
Fifty-five non-hospitalized patients with long COVID and brain fog (24 males and 31 females, mean age: 45.6 ± 14.6 years, mean duration of education: 14.4 ± 3.0 years) were recruited. Neuropsychological assessments included screening tests for overall cognition, and comprehensive tests for memory, executive function, processing speed, and subjective emotional and disease symptoms. Cognitive test scores were converted into Z-scores. Moreover, principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to define cognitive domains across subtest scores.
Results:
Comprehensive assessments revealed cognitive impairment in 69.1% of patients (<1.5 standard deviation in at least one test). The processing speed (27.3%), memory recall (21.8%), memory learning (20.0%), and inhibitory control (18.2%) were the most affected areas. Self-reported anxiety and depression were observed in 35% and 33% of patients, respectively. Furthermore, the degree of self-anxiety can be used to predict learning performance.
Conclusion:
Nearly 70% of patients with subjective cognitive complaints and long COVID had objective cognitive impairments. A comprehensive evaluation is essential for patients with long COVID and brain fog, including those with mild symptoms.

North America Infusion Pumps Market Trends, Size, Segment and Growth by Forecast to 2030
The North America infusion pumps market is projected to reach US$ 6,974.6 million by 2025, up from US$ 4,488.1 million in 2018, growing at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2019 to 2025.
Market growth is being driven by the rising incidence of chronic diseases, the increasing volume of surgical procedures, and the growing geriatric population. However, growth is somewhat restrained by challenges such as frequent product recalls and stringent regulatory requirements. đDownload Full PDF Sample Copy of Market Report @ https://www.businessmarketinsights.com/sample/TIPRE00005746
Infusion pumps, essential in hospitals, nursing homes, and even home care settings, are critical for delivering medications like insulin, antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, and pain relievers. The rising prevalence of chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and heart failure is significantly fueling demand. Diabetes, in particular, remains a critical health concern; according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), North America had about 46 million diabetics in 2017, a number projected to climb to 62 million by 2045, reflecting a 35% increase. Likewise, cancer continues to burden the healthcare system, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting it as the second leading cause of death globally in 2018, accounting for 9.6 million deaths. In the US alone, the American Cancer Society estimated 1,735,350 new cancer cases diagnosed in 2018. Additionally, infusion pumps play a role in managing congestive heart failure (CHF), which affected around 5 million Americans in 2018, according to Emory Healthcare.
Among North American countries, the US is expected to dominate the infusion pumps market due to its high prevalence of diabetes, obesity, and hormonal disorders, alongside the need for steady drug infusion in its aging population. Growth is further supported by technological advancements, rising patient awareness, and favorable reimbursement policies. As a result, the US is set to contribute the largest market share in North America through the forecast period.

NaNoWriMo Day 4
Title: No such accidents
Vignette word count: 383
Running total word count: 1714
Still doing the nameless narrative schtick, but the protagonist is Judith Diaton from "Behind Closed Doors". No idea about her lab partner, though. This story is inspired by a voice-controlled robot car that I had to make for an electrical engineering class back in 2019. A class that had only become mandatory for computer science majors starting with my batch.
I'll just put the whole thing here. I think the dialogue is better than my 2am brain dialogues that I omitted from my other posts, at least.
----
Elegia Hall is lined with very sophisticated asonarium absorption technology. Expensive, yes, but it's a huge necessity for a building that houses even more expensive computer hardware. Not that anyone could accidentally set off something with sonomancy, but the department didn't want to risk any deliberate attacks on their systems either.
The student let out a frustrated sigh when the op-amp fell off the table before she ducked down to pick it up. In just about any other building, she could utter a simple spell to lift it up. Small spells were typically exempt from the absorbers. But even that was too much of a risk in this department.
âDo you think we should use tones with the car?â her lab partner asked. The pesky voice-controlled car was driving them up the wall with its refusal to follow input.
âI don't know. Do you think you could land the same tone every time?â When her partner shrugged, she continued. âI don't think tone would be enough. We'll have to use very distinct patterns with it.â
âWe tried using distinct patterns. It didn't work. Stubborn PCA.â
They exited the building from the third floor. (Only such a hilly school could have exits on four different floors.) After placing the robot car on the ground, they began their test.
âSlooooow...â she said, and the car rolled a short distance.
âUp up up!â her partner said, and this time the car covered more ground.
âFinally, those words actually work.â
âReady for the turns?â
They brought the car back to the starting point.
âMake left!â The car moved a short distance before turning.
Finally, they were ready to try the last command. A sharp, high-pitched declaration of the final direction. The student crouched down and prepared the word.
âR- ai!â A skateboarder barreled past her, and she instinctively cast a barrier spell.
Too bad this didn't count as an accident. Even in the heat of the moment, she meant it as a defense. Too bad they were outside, or the absorbers would have caught her petty defense mechanisms. Too bad this mechanism fried the car's battery.
âI'm so sorry,â she told her partner. Her partner was clearly irritated, but the damage to the car wasn't too bad. At least they had the means to replace the components.

Australia Balustrade Forecast to 2031 with Key Companies Profile, Supply, Demand and SWOT Analysis
Australia Balustrade Market Statistics- 2027
The Australia balustrade market size was valued at $44.1 million in 2019, and is projected to reach $54.5 million by 2027, registering a CAGR of 4.0% from 2020 to 2027. The balustrade is a handrail supported by balusters, especially installed in balcony, terrace, and others. These balustrades are available in various sizes, patterns as well as materials for installation in residential and commercial spaces.
Rise in demand for commercial infrastructure developments in Australia drives the Australia balustrade market growth. For instance, Canberraâs largest independent hotelier DOMA built and inaugurated Little National hotel in Sydney in September 2020. Similarly, in December 2020, Australian boutique hotel group opened Lance more Crossley St. in Melbourne, which includes 113 private guest rooms with an exotic interior. Moreover, many commercial construction companies are engaged in business expansion in Australia to expand their production base and increase their production. Such factors offer lucrative growth opportunities for the market players during the forecast period.
In addition, surge in urbanization and population have fueled the demand for balustrade in residential and commercial spaces. Moreover, rise in demand for residential buildings is expected to continue to drive the Australia balustrade market growth. In addition, in June 2020, Prime minister of Australia announced the HomeBuilder scheme worth $688 million for Australians who are looking to build or renovate their houses. The grants are open to people whose income is less than $125,000 annually. In addition, in May 2020, Property Council of Australia (PCA) recommended a $50,000 new home boost scheme to help the building industry. However, the fluctuation in raw material prices may hinder the market growth.

The novel coronavirus is rapidly spreading across various countries and regions, causing enormous impact on lives of people and overall community. Originating as a crisis to human health, it now poses significant threat to the worldwide trade, economy, and finance. The impact of lockdown, owing to COVID-19 is vague and economic recovery of Australia balustrade manufacturers is completely based on its cash reserves. Market players can afford a complete lockdown only for a limited period, after which they would have to alter their investment plans. The Australia balustrade manufacturers need to emphasize on protecting their staff, operations, and supply chain partners to effectively respond toward immediate crisis and discover new ways of working after coronavirus cases begin to decline.
The Australia balustrade market is segmented on the basis of railing type, material type, and application. On the basis of railing type, the market is divided into interior railing, and exterior railing. On the basis of material type, it is classified into stainless steel, aluminum, wood, glass, and others. On the basis of application, the market is divided into residential, and non-residential.
Competition Analysis
Key companies profiled in the Australia balustrade market report include Absolute Balustrades, Advance Metal Industries (AMIA), Aluline, Aluminum Balustrades, Ammi Balustrades, Balustrading WA, Betta Balustrades, Oxworks, Protector Aluminum, and Ullrich.
