and I brought something “new” with me:

the

PHILIPS NC2234 Full Auto Stop

Cassette Recorder

It’s a classic mono tape recorder for usual Compact Cassettes from the late 70s to the early 80s.

But though it’s all in all quite basic, it contains one or another little feature, that didn’t used to be so basic back in the day (or let’s say, that wasn’t included in every device you would call a “classic tape recorder from 1980”).

For the classic features, it has a built in microphone, one big internal speaker (because it’s mono), the typical big buttons for play, pause, record etc.. , a counter, a handle to carry it around, the ability to run it on batteries (6 C-cells) or by cable, and the Auto Stop function.

Special features (in my opinion) would be the “Tone Regulation” (turning button right above the identical volume regulator) and the numerous different connection sockets all around it. Not because there are some at all, but more because of their kind and number!

Typical for an European device of that time would possibly be one or two five poled “Din-Sockets” for headphones or a microphone etc… .But this one doesn’t have a single one of those! In fact is has (beside the plug in for the electricity cable) two regular 3.5 mm Headphone sockets (like in- and output), a little slimmer remote socket (I don’t know how this is actually called) and on the other side it has a single two poled “Din-Socket” for an external speaker.

Sadly the 3.5mm sockets don’t really work, like the output (“phones”) doesn’t work at all and the input (“mic”) works so far, that I was able to record from a plugged in radio, but the quality was so terrible that you couldn’t understand a single word (but the recording mechanism itself works pretty good, because the recordings I’ve made with the built in microphone were actually pretty good and in fact way better than with other devices that I’ve used before this one). The “remote”-socket was the only thing I wasn’t able to test, because I have absolutely no idea what exactly type of plug this is for. But the two poled “Din-Socket” on the other side works perfectly! I’ve connected my Sony headphones via some adapters (Din to Cinch and Cinch to 3.5mm) with it and it works great. Like it sounds way better than from the internal speaker (obviously: cause modern Headphones vs 45yo mono speaker 😂).

Oh and beside all of that technical stuff, I just love it’s absolutely sleek and timeless design, that I think was typical for all early Philips tape decks and recorders (like since the late 60s).

So in conclusion, it’s a (nearly) fully working cassette recorder that is actually still usable for listening to music or voice recording via the built in microphone, but more useless for external recordings!

I gave it a second life by putting it on it’s own little table in my kitchen, where it could just stand around and look beautiful most of the time, but also entertain me with music once in a while.

What should I know before buying a smartwatch?

A smartwatch is a bracelet-like wristwatch with an embedded operating system and sensors that can run applications, send or receive messages, show notifications, and more.

The first smartwatches were developed by PHTL Smartwatches. They were powered by the energy from a button cell battery. Later, in 1991, Seiko Epson Corporation created the prototypes of smartwatches. The description of this watch was filed in 1997 (see figure 1).

The concept of wearables has been gathering attention since 2007, when Apple launched its first iPhone. Nowadays, everyone is thinking about wearable devices due to their growing popularity. In 2014 Apple released its first real smartwatch: Apple Watch (see figure 2). 

Google also created a smartwatch called Android Wear (see figure 3). Samsung has released its line of Gear S3 watches (see figure 4). In the fall of 2016, Pebble Technology Corporation announced to stop making devices because it was bought by FitBit Inc.

What should I know before buying a smartwatch?

Before buying any type of device, you should know how to use it and what advantages it will bring. You can search the web for tips on choosing one or hiring an expert, but the most important thing is to check the specifications of a particular watch.

1. You don't need it

"The Apple Watch has been on the wrists of reviewers for ten days, and I haven't worn any other watch since setting it up," said Katyanna Quach from VentureBeat.  Some people are going to love this watch, but most people will probably not need it. According to a study made by Endeavour Partners, in 2015, about 58 million smartwatches were shipped. This year, Apple Watch sales are expected at $10 billion only for 2016 (see figure 5). That's why "if you want one, get it now," said Philip Elmer-DeWitt from Fortune.

2. You can use your phone instead

A smartwatch is like a smartphone companion, they are both powerful devices that offer similar benefits, but the main difference is that it's much easier to pull out your phone than take off your wrist to check what time it is. By having a smartwatch, you don't need to be so dependent on your smartphone: "On average, people touch their phones 150 times per day," said Ashley Carman from The Verge, "that's around 9,900 touches for the entire year". And not only smartphones are taking our attention: "Americans spend up to 90 minutes a day looking at their computers", according to Mary Meeker, who did this study in 2015 (see figure6).

3. It's for fitness enthusiasts more than the general public

"I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed with it as an everyday watch," said Jason Snell from Macworld. Indeed, smartwatches have initially been created for fitness enthusiasts. Tim Cook, an Apple CEO, said at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2015: "the way I see it, if you're looking at a smartphone all day long, you probably aren't doing so well." Also, Phil Schiller claimed on stage that the primary goal of the Apple Watch was "to help customers stay fit.” Android Wear also has health-tracking features, and watches can track your heart rate (see figure 7). Fitbit also has its line of smartwatches, the Surge (see figure 8).

4. Choose Apple Watch over Android Wear smartwatches

"The Apple Watch is something people will want to buy and use on their wrist every day," said Joel Santo Domingo from The New York Times. He also did a review about Android Wear at the Google I/O conference in 2015, saying that it wasn't good enough yet: "I still find it frustrating to deal with notifications when they come in on Android Wear. For one thing, there's no way to archive or delete them directly-you can only respond or clear them" he said

Users can extend it using Power Reserve mode, but they need to know when they charge it so that they don't miss any important notifications.

8. Want to look like a cyborg? Choose another watch

An unnamed reviewer said: "it looks like the most futuristic thing on your wrist," and added that he would wear it even if it didn't come with any innovative features. The Apple Watch Edition is made of 18K yellow or rose gold (with sapphire screen) and costs from $10,000 to $17,000 depending on the band you choose (see figure 11). One could also check out other smartwatches by Samsung (whose Gear S2 costs between $300 and $350), Asus, Huawei, or LG.

9. You shouldn't buy an Apple Watch hoping for a phablet replacement

"Size matters when it comes to a smartwatch. The LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition is huge by comparison, with a 1.3-inch face that would look more at home on your wrist if you were rock climbing or deep-sea diving," said Andrew Hayward from TrustedReviews.

10. Do I have to charge my watch every day?

It depends on the model (see figure 12). Some Android Wear watches need charging every night, but there are not many reviews about it yet.

In Vino Veritas Biennale Style!

It was the Vernissage days at the 2014 Biennale, and for me those of the Vernissage are the most exciting days to visit the exhibition, more for the fact that you get to meet with old friends than for the presented works as because of the large number of people you can never experience it as you should. During the Vernissage one usually spends the morning and afternoon visiting the pavilions openings, meeting up with friends and of course having a lot of Aperol spritz. And evenings are usually reserved for the parties.

That was the second time that I was involved with the Kosovo National Pavilion as Commissioner on behalf of the Ministry of Culture after our first participation as Kosovo at the Biennale in 2012.

On the second night of the Vernissage I was supposed to go to the Turkish party, which was organized by Murat (Tabanlioglu) at one of the Venetian islands, but during the day I met up with two close friends Winy (Maas) and Jan (Knikker) from MVRDV who invited me to a somewhat private dinner at a restaurant nearby San Marco Square. “You have to come and you'll going to love it, but it’s a strictly personal invitation”, Jan told me.

It was a bit difficult to reach the place as my phone battery was very low and I was trying to find it without using Google Maps. I finally did find it and, although I thought I was late, apparently most of the guests also got lost and everyone was showing up at around the same time.

So I entered this room that was not larger than 4x4 meters, with a large table in the middle and people sitting around it, and a second row of chairs behind them. I set at one of the chairs close to Jan and could identify some of the people sitting at the large table. Apparently Winy was the moderator of this “debate” and the other people attending were Aaron Betsky, Patrik Schumacher, François Roche & Peter Noever. Anyhow, before the debate started, a gentleman, that I later learned was Robert White, welcomed everyone to the second night of the "Dark Side Club" talks and asked for drinks to be served.

After drinks were poured and Winy made his short opening speech, which was supposed to set the tone of the debate, each participant around the table had his own turn to talk about the curators’ work. I'm not sure if it was the drinks, the late hours or the intimacy of the place, or maybe all of them, but all of the participants around the table took their terms at criticizing Rem (Koolhaas). Everything went on smoothly, with all participants jabbing Rem and telling architecture jokes, but the mood suddenly changed after Patrik (Schumacher) declared that the curated work was brilliant and that the future of architecture was parametric!  

This was the moment the "architecture roast" started and the gloves were off! Roche, Noever, and Betsky were all yelling at Patrik. I must say that after few minutes I felt bad for Patrik being called a narcissist, childish, a preacher, etc.,  and at one point was thinking of standing up and screaming he “knows that parametricism is just a tool"  but I think he was enjoying the fact that the debate focused on him and also Betsky anticipated me by telling Patrik that he doesn’t like using offensive words but he felt the need to say to him to "F..k off". After that he stood up and left the table!

Patrik defense of his view and others’ criticism continued until the end of the debate which apparently lasted for another 2 hours although to me it seemed much shorter than that.

I must say that this was the most fun I had in a Biennale-related event and I was told that these kinds of matchups of participants take place on purpose so the debates are always super interesting. This provided me with the incentive to do something similar back home at the Kosovo Architecture Festival, which involved those Future Architecture young creatives we invited to the event.

Probably because of the young age of our participants “Debates over Beers" were not that serious and they ended up with the young fellows imitating "starchitects" and raising philosophical questions on the meaning of life and why one should become an architect, with the latter definitely being the result of drinking too much beer!  

I'm really sorry that just minutes into the Venice “Dark Side Club” debate my cell phone died and couldn’t take any photo to show. All I can add is that I did ask everybody in the room to lend me their power bank to recharge my phone but no one was willing to do it!

Matthew was stabbed in the back by a swordsman sent by King Hertacus. Thaddeus was crucified in Edessa Simon the Canaanite was crucified in England Judas committed suicide after his betrayal. John passed away peacefully in Patmos So 10 of the 12 disciples of Christ died violently for preaching the Gospel of Christ to the world.  And that was just their deaths not to mention all who died for believing.  Many, like Peter, spent a lot of time in prison and were tortured over the years too.  This is true dedication and reminded me of this verse: "And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me." For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it." ~ Luke 9:23-24 We Have Failed! Almost all of them took up their cross, many literally, to follow Jesus.  How many of us would do that today?  How many of us have even been close to being in that position?  Sure there are some evangelists that travel into some unfriendly territories and have had their faith tested.  But for most of us, we live a cushy life where our faith and dedication is never really put to a test.  Even when it is slightly test we fail. To be fair most of us would never have the the faith to follow Christ where he has gone.  Most of us hide in our safe churches and when the heat is on, we deny him like Peter did.  We have all failed at this at some point.  We are afraid of what people think of us more than what God thinks of us.  If Peter failed as an Apostle who knew Jesus and witnessed the Gospel preached personally, what hope is there for us? We have all failed, just like Peter.  But if we truly have our hearts focused on following our Lord, we must carry our cross wherever he leads us.  How easy is it today when there is little risk of being put to death for our beliefs.  At most these days,we get some ridicule.  However, if we can't handle a little ridicule, how can we handle the more difficult path to come?  It seems to me that our relationship with God was built on sand in that case and we should take an honest look at our relationship with Him.

Will You Take Up Your Cross? The good news for us is we can learn and gain strength through our submission to God through Jesus and the strength of the Holy Spirit that he grants us.  Peter failed by denying Christ 3 times but he learned from his mistakes and became the Rock that Christ founded his Church on and performed great works in the name of Jesus.  More importantly he never denied Jesus again no matter the trials he went through.  So can you take up your cross and not longer be embarrassed by your faith in Jesus?  If you fall, and you will, can you get back up, put that cross on your shoulder and follow our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on to his promised kingdom.
