We were so, so lucky to get Joe and Nicky back exactly as we left them in the first film. There was a change in direction, yes, but Joe and Nicky are exactly how I hoped they would be post-Booker’s exile.

In the first movie, we witness Joe’s fierce anger over the betrayal of his best friend, and Nicky’s cold, composed resolve (the clearest example being when he tells Merrick that he’s the one who’s going to die).

That’s why in the final pub scene, we see Joe visibly angry at the table as they decide Booker’s fate. And in the second film, we see how Joe’s anger burns fast and fades just as quickly, how soft he actually is, while Nicky stays true to his word. Make amends for a hundred years. That’s what the group decided after we were tortured, and so it shall be.

And the scenes where they tease each other (“Come on, Joe, it’s just a car!” in Italian, after Joe took the car Nicky wanted but can’t even start it), or when they know each other’s habits so well and stumble half-drunk off to bed. The way they move in perfect sync in battle, swapping weapons without missing a beat. And then that moment when Joe finally opens up, admitting a fear he shows to no one. Not ever. But he knows his love will be there, literally to hold his hand.

I want to cry.
