NEW: COVID19 variant of interest JN.1

Geneva, 19 December 2023 -- Due to its rapidly increasing spread, WHO is classifying the variant JN.1 as a separate variant of interest (VOl) from the parent lineage BA.2.86. It was previously classified as VOl as part of BA.2.86 sublineages.

WHO advises people to take measures to prevent infections and severe disease using all available tools. These include:

-Wear a mask when in crowded, enclosed, or poorly ventilated areas, and keep a safe distance from others, as feasible

-Improve ventilation

-Practise respiratory etiquette - covering coughs and sneezes

-Clean your hands regularly

-Stay up to date with vaccinations against COVID-19 and influenza, especially if you are at high risk for severe disease

-Stay home if you are sick

-Get tested if you have symptoms, or if you might have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or influenza

For health workers and health facilities, WHO advises:

-Universal masking in health facilities, as well as appropriate masking, respirators and other PPE for health workers caring for suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients.

-Improve ventilation in health facilities

I was a wizard's apprentice, but we didn't get anything done because he kept putting more and more PPE on me while explaining the importance of safety. By the end I was wearing two hazmat suits, several pairs of gloves, three boots and a giant gasmask.

We were making a low-level healing potion.

Today's blast from the past is from April 2020. Elastomerics have long shown to be one of the best and least-wasteful ways to prevent the spread of airborne disease like tuberculosis. Find one you like and stock up on filters, parts, etc. With NIOSH getting hobbled, it might be harder to find quality equipment (and disposables) in the coming years.

ProjectN95 is shutting down

Tumblr Friends! ProjectN95 is unfortunately closing its doors on December 15th. They've done SO much to provide masks, respirators, PPE to healthcare workers and the public since 2020, and this is honestly such a loss of a non-profit organization. They've helped a lot of people over these years.

If you need quality masks/respirators, they're having a sale right now on ProjectN95.org. I definitely recommend checking them out sooner than later.

tornado debris clean-up PPE

limited internet so i’m just now posting this: a blanket list of ppe everyone should have if you are cleaning up debris after a disaster, not including any specific ppe based on the specific situation. this list was confirmed and added to by my professor in disaster management, meant to advise those cleaning up debris after severe tornadoes.

>work gloves

>thick-soled boots

>eye protection

>helmet/head protection if you are concerned about falling debris

>tdapp immunizations (for tetanus)

>n-95 mask (minimum level of protection you should be wearing)

>appropriate clothing (as much skin covered as possible. durable jeans are great)

other materials: sunblock, water, oranges or other quick/light snacks, bandana, hat, and identification.

there are times when we the community are the responders instead of those who have more power and more means to rebuild. that does not mean we get to rush in, risk harm to ourselves, or work beyond our abilities. be there for each other and be safe.
